The Sears shopping spree went to Frank Retter of New Carlisle, Ind. and the Kohler gift card was awarded to Bernadette Vidal of Brick, N.J.

Would like to say "congratulations" to Marsha on winning the "green home" from HGTV. Was hoping and praying that my family would win - well better luck next time.

Marsha - I hope you will enjoy your new "green" home. I actually have one of the sunset on my computer as a screen saver.

Just wanted to say congratulations. You are truly blessed. If you open it up to a "bed and breakfast" - give me a shout - I will come for a visit (smiles)

Enjoy your new home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just wanted to say congratulations to you Marsha :) You are very deserving of your new home and it was very inspiring to watch you throughout the surprise visit :) Take care.

I watched the green home giveaway Sunday with much anticipation - the home is SO beautiful, and I'd hoped it would go to someone who really would appreciate it, and be able to actually live in it. I was very pleased to see a winner who was genuinly thrilled to have been chosen! I will look forward to the next HGTV green home, and will dream big then too! Congratulations to the winner, and thanks HGTV for the inspiration.

Marsha, you truly deserved to win !!! Congratulations and best wishes for happiness in your new home !

I think that this contest is fixed. That girl does not need that house, she is going to use it for a bed and breakfast? She already has a beautiful house. I dont have anywhere to live and they give her something she doesnt need, they should look at the people they are just giving stuff away to before they give the blessed people kore material things that they dont appreciate, She didnt even look happy.

Wish it had been me, but congrats to Marsha. I was happy to see the winner show emotion and excitement at this announcement. The HGTV dream home winner barely seemed to care and almost seemed annoyed at the interruption of her birthday party.

Best Wishes To Everyone. It was good to see how excited you were. GOOD LUCK!!! GOOD HEALTH!!! and HAVE FUN in your new home

Congratulations Marsha,
It was so enjoyable to watch the Green Home giveaway and see the genuine joy, surprise, and elation of the winner. It was so refreshing to see a winner who had tears of joy as well as obvious thankfulness for being chosen the winner.
May you and your family spend many happy times and make wonderful family memories in your new "Green Dream Home".

I have a question for the HGTV staff do you only choose winners on the east coast many of your sweepstakes are won by people on the east coast I found it a little strange u have many dedicated fans here on the west coast also.

Just Wondering

Well, I was totally bummed that I didn't win, but glad that such an apparently nice family did.
Had to trade in my old Honda just before the drawing, but that Yukon Hybrid sure was a dream! (Bought a Saturn Aura, just couldn't wait for a hybrid, my car was in shop.)
Despite all I spent on postage for nothing, I had a really great time dreaming about this beautiful Green Home and hope you guys do it again next year!
Congrats, HGTV!

Just to let HGTV know: I would move to Florida or anywhere else to win a home. It doesn't seem you are giving people on the West Coast much of a chance of winning anything. I don't have roots in Mesa, AZ and moving to the East Coast would be a welcome change of scenery! Diane

I AGREE WITH WHAT KELI S, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHO PICKS THE WINNER AND HOW YOU PICKS THE WINNER TO. I PUT MY E-MAIL IN EVERY DAY FROM WHEN THE TIME WE COULD START TO VOTE AND THAT WAS FROM MARCH 23 UNTIL MAY 9 AND I STILL DID NOT WIN. IAM NOT MAD, BECOUSE I HAVE ENTER THE DREAM HOMES BEFORE.SO I KIND OF KNEW THAT I NOT GOING WIN, BUT I WAS WONDERING IF YOU HGTV DECIDE FROM THE EMAILS ADDRESS OR YOU DO ANY BACK GROUND CHECK ON THE PERSONS BANK ACCOUNT.I ALSO THINK THAT YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO VOTE MORE THEN 1 TIME A DAY.

Posted by MARY H – June 11, 2008 1:39 AM

Congratulations Marsha! Sorry for all the sore loser comments. (Before posting comments -- how about taking off the caps lock key and running a spell check.)

Posted by Anonymous – June 11, 2008 9:56 AM

Why is it that, after all of the fabulous homes and prizes HGTV has given away, none of them have ever been awarded to a person of color?? Not 1!!! It shows how racist these contests really are!!! It makes me really turn HGTV off, despite the great decorating ideas they have!! Most of the people that have won are not in need at all!

Posted by Anita H – June 11, 2008 10:20 AM

CONGRATULATIONS, I DIDN'T WATCH THE SHOW BUT READ THE COMMENTS. MY HUSBAND AND I ENTERED EVERY DAY FROM DAY ONE. THE COUPLE OF PEOPLE THAT UPSET THAT THEY DIDN'T WIN IS JUST JEALOUS AND CAN'T BE HAPPY FOR SOMEONE ELSE. THAT THE CHANCE OF ENTERING CONTESTS, YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE. THERE ARE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE OUT THERE WANTING TO WIN. JUST ENJOY THE FUN OF ENTERING LIKE WE DID. IF YOU CAN'T WIN BE HAPPY FOR THE PERSON THAT DID THEN DON'T ENTER CONTESTS AGAIN. CONGRAULATIONS AGAIN MARSHA ENJOY YOUR NEW HOUSE.

Posted by mary – June 11, 2008 11:32 AM

Congratulations Marsha!

I'm not surprised that there are a few whining crybabies that feel "entitled" just because they entered a contest.

Posted by Tim Keseluk – June 11, 2008 1:02 PM

Congratulations Marsha, it was nice to see how happy you were when you found out that you are the lucky winner!

However, I’m beginning to wonder if HGTV chooses the winners by the way they live because it seems that all the winners are already proud home owners.

I haven’t seen an HGTV winner yet who lives in an old rented single wide trailer like I do. I guess that just wouldn’t look pretty on TV?

Still, I am not giving up hope that one day there will be an HGTV winner who really needs a new home!

Posted by Rosemarie – June 11, 2008 1:47 PM

Hey, just an FYI to all the whiners, it is not only people from the East Coast that win prizes! Stephanie Dee was from IOWA! Last time I checked it is in the Midwest. Here is a handy list of all past winners:

1997-Michele Rambo, Tulsa, Oklahoma.

1998-Tina Carlson, Thousand Oaks, California.

1999-Belinda Brown, Kingston, Tennesee.

2000-Mary Barker, San Antonio, Texas.

2001-Kathy Hedrick, Gladstone, Missouri.

2002-Milton O'Bryant, Midland, Texas.

2003-John Groszkiewicz, Lake City, Pennsylvania.

2004-Kathi Nakao, Sacramento, California.

2005-Don Cruz, Batavia, Illinois.

2006-Don Cook, West Virginia.

2007-Robert O'Neill, Johnson City, Tennessee.

2008-Stephanie Dee, Solon, Iowa.
Get a map of the U.S. if you don't know the location of all these states.

Wahhhh!!! Why doesn't anyone from Vermont ever win!

Congratulations to Marsha, she was delightful!!! Looking forward to the next Dream and Green homes! Thanks HGTV.

Posted by Mary – June 11, 2008 5:37 PM

I don't believe the few people who posted their displeasure in seeing yet another non-needy person win a prize are "whiners", they just feel oppressed once again by a society that promises a chance to improve their lives only to dash those dreams by enriching the already wealthy, reminding us all that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Congrats to the winner, I hope she uses it to improve the quality of her family's life and not just a way to make a quick buck.

Posted by Julie – June 12, 2008 4:39 AM

Congratulations to the winner! I too was almost moved to tears to see your joy! As for the negative comments expressed by those questioning the selection process, GET OVER IT!! Thanks, Mary, for pointing out the winner's list which shows winners from all over the US. (And I agree with the anonymous comment to run a spell check before posting!) Why can't people just be happy for someone else? Why automatically begin making assumptions that there's some kind of evil plan to give more to those that don't need it? And the racist comment?????? Why even go there????? I entered the contest every day also....but I couldn't be happier for the winner! Congratulations to you and your family!! May you enojoy your home for many years to come!! God bless you!

Posted by Millie P. – June 12, 2008 9:20 AM

This and other contests with prizes of large amounts of monies, have millions of entrants. You have to know that winning would be like winning the lotto. Everyone always says that the person(s) that won did not deserve it as much as the person writing the blog. Get over it! Marsha and her family will enjoy it anyway they see fit, just as any other winner would. It's not for the whinners to decide the scale of enjoyment or neediness of the winner. Congrats Marsha and may you have success in the bed and breakfast if that is what you so choose.

Posted by Debbie – June 12, 2008 9:57 AM

Congratulations Marsha!! It sounds as though you have had some tough times in the recent past, and this new home will help you a lot. I hope you are able to keep it and enjoy it. What a wonderful place to bring your son and parents to live!! Good luck, Sweetie!!

Posted by Nancy S – June 12, 2008 10:18 AM

My heartfelt congrats to you Marsha for winning such a beautiful home! I live on Hilton Head Island and personally went to see the home. A dream home it is without doubt, and in such a gorgeous location. I entered the contest every single day and was thrilled when they extended the sweepstakes. Like you, with coffee in hand, every single morning...there I was entering and dreaming of how such a dream home wold change my own life. Enjoy your home and your new life. You well deserve it. I would love to hear from you and welcome you back to South Carolina. The place of "smiling faces"!!!

Posted by Leslie – June 12, 2008 10:46 AM

Dear Marsha-- You have nothing to feel guilty for. Your house is a very humble duplex--not some fancy oasis. It will be great for us to live vicariously through you in your new house! Contestants should remember that there will always be people who have more than you and always people with less. Congratulations!

Posted by Heather – June 12, 2008 11:27 AM

Marsha won fair and square you all expect you should of won it. After all over 21 million people have entered yeah thats right 21,000,000 and everybody seems to think if they entered everyday they would be 1 of the 21 million lol. Stop being a sore loser and people that think hgtv is racist your a complete joke. If people really watched the show and saw her house it wasn't even a house it was an apartment kind of house did you see how all the houses were together? Congrats Marsha you truly deserve it and even if a billionaire won it....its a chance it isn't who is in need of it! Seems like everybody out there is looking for handouts geez.

Posted by Robert – June 12, 2008 1:53 PM

Wow! SO MUCH JUDGEMENT FOR A RANDOM PRIZE WIN!
IT's a random sweepstakes. It's color blind, it's finacial staus blind... haven't you ever heard of pulling a random name out of a hat? I too entered daily. I would love to own a home as well and hope to someday. Congratulations to the winner! It's an awesome win!!!! And whose business is it what she does with it? It's her now! She can sell it, give it away, move into it, make it a B & B, use it for vacations only or let it sit and rot! IT's hers! No judgement! Now, I'm looking forward to entering for the next one! Hope I win!

Posted by NMB – June 12, 2008 2:42 PM

Hey, I hope her X eats his heart out or some saying like that, can't touch that!!!!I loved the interview it's so sweet. ENJOY your new abode I know I would. LUCKY GIRL!!!Hope to hear from you soon, let everyone know how gorgeous your home is.HAPPY SUMMER!

Posted by Mary/Pa. – June 12, 2008 8:21 PM

I too entered every day and I didn't win but you guys have to think of the taxes and upkeep that there is on this house no one ever thinks of that what seems like a blessing maybe a nightmare. I am a gay male and did not win if ever there was a thought that it was fixed look at the winners of both homes they are both females. What difference does it make who won, theres only a chance in 200 million people if the government would fund more housing projects we could all get a dream home and stop this stupid war in Iraq and Afghanistan. There are too many people starving than worrying about winning a damn house get over it.

Posted by Jerry E Mungo Jr – June 13, 2008 7:35 AM

Seems it's always someone who doesn't "need" the house!!

Posted by Anonymous – June 13, 2008 11:20 AM

No to be racist becuase i'm not but when was the last time you remember a Hispanic or Black, etc person win a Dream Home. I didn't know who was going to win this year but i bet myself that if i didn't win, the person that did would be white and i was right on the money. Maybe it's really just random. I dont know. Anyway Good luck with your new home. God Bless.

Posted by rick – June 13, 2008 1:19 PM

I cant believe how many people really think they didnt win because of color, get over yourself because u r the racist. 21 mil entrys, your chances r the same winning the lotto. man up!

Posted by ?? – June 13, 2008 11:22 PM

Why has this contest turned to a topic of racism? I would bet that the demographics for HGTV consist of primarily white females. It would be interesting to be able to split out the 21 million votes into categories of race. (But they can't because if you noticed, they did not ask what race you are when you entered the contest. If they do not know if you are black, white, Hispanic, Asian or anything else, then how can they discriminate based on that????)

As for Marsha, congratulations!!! From the show that I saw, she is a recently divorced lady who has had to move back in with her parents in order to get back on her feet. Why is she considered "rich"? Actually, she is rich--in love and support. She is blessed--to have a family who would take her in and allow her to heal and regroup from her divorce.

To all the negative people, I would say take that chip off of your shoulder and quit sending out all of this negative energy. You might just find that when you send out positive, well-meaning "energy", that is usually what you get back in return.

Posted by LGM – June 14, 2008 11:25 AM

Congratulations Marsha. So nice to see the publicity given to green homes. Maybe more people will jump on the bandwagon when the see what can be done.

Wow! I didn't know people took this contest so seriously. I can understand disappointment however, keep it to yourself. Grow up. Get a life.
Now about the racist comments... statistically I am willing to bet that the % of white American entrants versus other was probably somewhere around 10 to 1. Therefore, the odds of an other winning would be .01 to 21 million.
Man I bet these people really get tick off when they don't when the PTA raffles where they actually have to pay for an chance LOL. BTW I am African-American.

Posted by ej – June 16, 2008 2:33 PM

FYI: If anyone reads the contest rules for HGTV, background checks are completed before selecting the winner.

Posted by Hope – June 16, 2008 10:51 PM

WELL SAID E.J. and other bloggers about the negative comments. I get so tired of hearing the RACE comments and the- I SHOULD HAVE WON ATTUIDE BECAUSE I HAVE MEDICAL PROBLEMS. Why can't people just be happy for the winner. We all wanted to win and we all knew the chances were very slim when you entered. I am very happy for Marsha and her family, and wish them many fun filled years in their new home.

Posted by Jan – June 17, 2008 8:55 AM

I am soooo happy for you and your family!! Congratulations. You certainly seem genuine and I'm happy to see someone win that truly appreciates the prize and deserves to win!!!!!!!!! Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

Posted by Anonymous – June 17, 2008 12:54 PM

CONGRATULATIONS TO MARSHA I'M SO HAPPY FOR YOU. NOW I'M NOT VERY HAPPY ABOUT ALL THE RACIST COMMENTS I MEAN SHE WON AND THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS. NOW FOR HGTV, I HAD READ SOME RUMORS ABOUT CORRUPTIONS ON THE SELECTION OF THE WINNERS, IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE THAT NEXT TIME CHANGE THE METHOD THAT YOU ARE USING FOR THE SELECTION OF THAT WINNER CAUSE TO BE HONEST NOBODY KNOWS HOW DO YOU SELECT A WINNER. NEXT TIME DO IT ON LIVE TV.

Posted by Juan Garcia – June 17, 2008 7:26 PM

There seems to be an interview with Marsha where she mentions her divorse and moving in with her parents. I can't find this interview anywhere. Could someone please direct me to this source? Thanks so much.

Posted by Katydid – June 18, 2008 5:26 PM

Never mind, blogger friends, I found it, but don't ask me how. It wasn't easy. And the jarring commercials before each segment was awful. Marsha did answer my question....I think she read some of the blogs, but she did not blog. I don't blame her. The Interviewer mentioned the B&B idea, maybe because of Marsha's long list of friends, relatives and family who might be visiting or staying. Her son loves golf, so he will be there often, I suspect. She seemed a novice about going green, (saving the water from washing her hands?) but truly excited about her good fortune. I wish Marsha the best of luck and hope she will keep in touch with us through HGTV.
Peace and love to all.

Posted by Katydid – June 19, 2008 6:42 PM

I am happy for Marsha!!! I would be happy for anyone who won!! My problem with hgtv is how they made some believe the winner was going to be chosen on live television! The winner aleady knew who they were and the show was pretaped! I have already tried once on June 9 to post this comment but it was never posted! I have since lost faith in hgtv!!

Posted by Dana D – June 19, 2008 8:17 PM

Just wanted to say goodby to HGTV. I will no longer watch you. I will no longer be drawn in bu these sweepstakes. You have become very boring. So Long.

Posted by Christopher M – June 20, 2008 1:48 PM

Oh my gosh, I didn't win and I have hairy big toes, woe is me. Perhaps HGTV is biased against people with hairy toes. I live on the East Coast and I didn't win yet I entered everyday, perhaps HGTv did a back ground check and decided that I wasn't rich enough because my husband and I am going through a spot of unemployment. Perhaps I should get over it considering that HGTV did not choose the winners- they were chosen at random by an independant firm. The winners were contacted within a certain amount of time of the drawing (before the giveaway) to check eligability. Get over it people. I have a sob story to tell too, but I am so excited for the winner. It is a bummer that the competition is over because it was so fun dreaming about the house. My daughter would have had fun in the kids room in a "big girl" bed. We can as they say "man up" and keep dreaming big. I would agree that the drawing was not live though. I live in the saem town as Marsha and what was shown on TV was not the same weather outside our house at that time,

Dear Kelly, We need your help please. We have searched high and low for any news of there being a HGTV Green Home for 2009. Is there any way you can find out and tell us if there is going to be one?? Or are they planning on combining the Green Home with the Dream Home? This not knowing is not kind to the viewers/bloggers/messageboarders. Thanks for your help. Hope to hear from you soon. velvet350

LOVE that home (even better than the Dream Home).
Entered EVERY day, but hey, I'm in the process of building one myself, so I guess it's better that the winners were you guys. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.
Hilton Head is one of my favorite places on the planet!!!!!

Posted by Cassi – June 25, 2008 5:33 PM

If the winner was in Europe when the drawing took place, would you wait until they get home, or would you just pick someone else?

Posted by JoAnn – June 29, 2008 3:07 PM

And the winner is... a lady who already lives in a huge house in Sunny Florida!!??! what? oh well congrats marsha

Posted by jessica – June 30, 2008 5:45 PM

kwalters: When are we going to see the video of Marsha seeing her dreamy Green Home for the first time? When will she be moving in? Are you going to wait for Jack to show up? I have a feeling he has his hands full on the west coast right now.
jessica: I believe if you had done your homework, you would have found that if it wasn't for the kindness of her parents, Marsha would have been homeless. Sorta makes you feel that she was not only extremely lucky, but deserving as well.

Posted by Katydid – July 1, 2008 5:31 PM

I entered about 50-60 times for the Green Home. I was so excited to see the winner. Marsha....CONGRATS. I am in Hilton Head right now and want to visit the home from the "street." Can anyone tell me in what area to find it? I know it is in Hardeeville area.

Someone mentioned that HGTV does a background check on contestants before they make a selection. That's surprising to know. Does anyone know what kind of background check?

Kelly: I would ask directions to Tradition Hilton Head. From there it shouldn't be too hard to find the Green Home.
inspired: I suspect the background check would be for criminal activity. After all, a parolee would find it difficult to accept the home and still report to his/her parole officer. Or HGTV certainly wouldn't want to gift the home to a known child molester or sex offender. Just guessing.

Will there ever be a video of the winner's "1st visit" to the Green Home like there is for the Dream Home? Will we be receiving any new information, pictures or video of anything GH-related (either '08 or '09) any time in the near future? It's getting a bit boring having nothing going on here. Please give us something!

Congrats to Marsha for winning.....And for all the whinny people go back to school. Most winners are NOT from the East Coast, they are from CST, MST.
Let Marsha enjoy her new home.

Listen viewers and enterers....whatever sob story you have, there is always someone elses that is worse than yours. This is a place to congratulate the winner and be fair. At least we now know who the winner is and thats more than I can say for DIY's Blog Cabin winner.....still waiting on that one. I also entered everyday and hoped and prayed to win.....hoping and praying does not always get you what you want. Wishing Marsha love, peace and joy, DonnaDean
