Vern Yip's Eco-Friendly Living Room Makeover

Posted by kwalters – May 3, 2008 4:31 PM

Check out this new eco-friendly makeover Vern Yip did on Deserving Design.

Eco-Friendly Living Room - After

I like the way he blended green products like an organic wool rug, recycled hurricane lamps and an antique desk with non-green ones like the sofa, curtains and floors. It's a good reminder that most of us go green one step (or one rug) at a time.

And darn it, I thought I'd finally decided on a paint color for my living room. After seeing the paint Vern chose for this one (Yolo no-VOC paint in Stone), I may have to change my mind!

Sorry, that room is much too dark for my taste. With dark floors I would want a much lighter color on the walls and I would take down those dark (heavy looking) drapes and let the sheers billow in the wind (might have to use Dana's fan.) For light control and privacy I would use some kind of bamboo roll up (or down) shades. But is that sweetened ice tea I see on the table waiting for deb and Lisa? Must be a fake orchid. The live ones are so much more interesting, waiting for each bud to bloom. Wish there had been more pictures. Sorry to be so critical, but when I(we) are so in love with the GREEN HOME, anything else seems to fall short. Loved Barbara's comment "Green is the new Red, White and Blue". We must all do every little thing we can to save our precious Earth for future generations. HGTV is setting such a marvelous example. Thank you!!! Good Luck to all, and never let go of your dreams.

fantastic, vern can come on over and redo my place anytime, i like the drapes (window treatment)between vern candice olsen and linda stopping by to visit and giving my doublewide a makeover, it will look just as good as a million dollar mansion, i'm the queen of my double wide trailer lol, there is a country song named that, of course i'm still holding high hopes for that random draw of the GREEN HOME, yahooo, Lisa...

Vern's style is so comfortable, classy and "real"...and his "green" update of the living room is proof that "green" can be glam...not boring! Beautiful...just beautiful!

Posted by connie – May 3, 2008 7:44 PM

hey deb,
i know to some folks a double wide ain't all that great, but we got a good one, it looks just like a house, no one can tell it's a mobile home, my mom had the wheels and axles taken off, when my brother and i moved in we did some remodeling, his room is what we call the bonus room, he has a slidng glass door on his room as do i on the other part of the house, so that it looks like a duplex from outside, we love it, just don't care for where it's parked (louisiana) i call it my mansion because it belonged to my mother, she had it moved down here from front royal virginia, cost her 8,000.00 to move it, so, i had to give you some 411 on it, just in case i'm picked for the green house ha! ha!, take er easy, Lisa...

Quite the makeovers. I like the new paint colors also, but I like the 'Green Home' the best. I've watched Deserving Design, and it is a great program. But like I said, I prefer to watch shows like HGTV, it is, in my opinion, the ultimate in reality show. From helping people find a home, to helping people sell their home, it is a wonderful network. You've heard it before, but I'll say it again, all of you at HGTV are wonderful!!! Thanks again for the chance to dream about a wonderful home in a wonderful area of this wonderful country we live in. Good luck everyone.

Hey all you bloggers I caught up with ya'll Vern Yips colors are divine I love the stone color would love to have it all thru my house of course only if its considered GREEN. Love the simplicity of the living room its only missing a few freah magnolis floating in a water bowl or a gardena floating for the light aroma to add to the freshness of the room. Thank you HGTV for giving us this opportunity to learn how to save our green earth. Have a happy day to all. Please HGTV don't stop teaching us about Green when this contest is over lots still to learn.

Different strokes for different folks !!!
I must say " To much Dark". Remove the dark curtains, do white wood blinds or anything simple and keep it white to match the mantle. The picture is to scrambled for the simplicity, don't go with the red in the picture, needs a touch of green, white, orange. to much contrask with the three same color pillows on the sofa. remove the center one and use a throw of green color. Why such a simple lamp? Green in the shade and use a shorter, simple small grass blades. To many green apples. Anyway, why didn't you ask me before you did this room. HA !!! HA!!!! I guess it's just not my style. dee

Good morning 'Green Home', HGTV, and fellow bloggers. I just toured all the pages again, reading all the new blogs. If everyone could, say a prayer for southern lady. Tornados went through the area she lives in, and she hasn't blogged in a couple of days. Let's pray it is just the electricity out. Heck, she may need the home. Lisa, what part of Louisianna are you in?? I lived in LaCombe in the very early 70's. I was only there for 2 years. Brought my babies back up here to be near family. I would much rather be near the ocean and in the south than to be here. Take care everyone and good luck.

Posted by deb – May 4, 2008 8:26 AM

Okay I must say the color of the curtains are lovely, but not my type. This is a green house add more green, yellow, orange. The darks colors are not working with the beautiful cream color sofa, also add more color to the pillows. The lamp is to simple. Next time just ask yasira for help! Thanks:)

I have watched all of Vern's makeovers on HGTV and he never ceases to amaze! The color schemes always blend well and even though I wouldn't personally choose many of the colors he uses, when he is finished they are astonishing! Keep up the good work, Vern, and good luck to all on the Green Home!

Posted by Charlene – May 4, 2008 2:01 PM

Luv the room! Another awesome job Vern! BTW... The green home is also gorgeous. I put my name in too. ;)

yeah!!! I'm back storms were pretty rough but praise the Lord all is well with me and my family and friends. Saw alot of damage thru out the state but all near and dear was spared thats to all for praying for me as I know it worked. All all you bloggers are doing okay beautiful today but here in AR you never know tommorrow storms coming in again so its springtime in AR.
Hope all is thinking Green as I am thanks HGTV for your good deeds.

Dee: Loved your post because you were the only one to agree with me that the room was too dark. If there were more pictures, I missed the connection. Can anyone help me out? Tonight I will be dreaming about the GREEN HOME, because not even the DH could surpass this amazing home. Almost time for the entries to end, so enter everyday, and Good Luck to all. Oh, and a big thanks to kwalters for keeping the blog so up to date, and HGTV, you are the greatest, THANKS!

I will keep Southern Lady in my prayers. Thank you for being so diligent Deb! I love reading all of your messages.
Regarding the above green makeover--it is nice, but not really my style either. I love Deserving Design and Vern Yip, and generally adore his makeovers, but I have to say the Green Home is much more to my tastes--bright and airy--
I do love the bamboo flooring, and the elements of the room are quite nice. It just feels dark, especially the curtains. Perhaps it is just the way the picture is framed and lighted. Of course, we don't have to all like the same things--
Now, if less people loved the Green Home my chances of winning would be much better!!
Can't wait to watch the special tonight. I have missed all the other airings, so I am scheduled my day around it. Good luck and happy dreaming to all--for the final days.

Glad to hear from you Southern Lady. We were starting to worry about you. How close were the tornados to you? We all only have a few more days. I wish each and every one of us good luck. This is such a tremendous home and will certainly be a blessing to someone. Let us all hope that whoever receives this home will be most appreciative of it and what HGTV has done, and that they honor the 'tradition' that has been started here. Not to mention, patronize the town folk of this fantastic community. Good luck everyone. My fingers are crossed. Good night 'Green Home', I'll see you in the morning.

Hey Southern Lady! We sure are glad to hear from you!! We were worried about you! I'm glad to hear you and your family are o.k.!!

Posted by Dana Dryburgh – May 4, 2008 9:30 PM

I don't care for the colors used in this room. They are to dark for me. Especially the curtains and floor. As far as the picture ,beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it just doesn't do anything for me. Just my opinion! Take it or leave it!

Posted by Dana Dryburgh – May 4, 2008 9:35 PM

Hi All: Southern Lady glad to hear from you and that you are well. Thank you for the prayers for little Aydn, he went home today from the hospital. He is doing well, has Gastro Esphogal Reflux, but, mediciene will keep it under control. Thank you Lord. Wishing all of you Good Luck and a great day.

Good morning 'Green Home', HGTV and fellow bloggers. I look forward to this every morning. Looking at the pictures of the 'Green Home', taking the tour, reading everyones comments, and 'Dreaming'!! Someone is going to be so very happy here in just a few short days. This is such an incredible home. Not just the way it looks, or it's location. It's what it stands for, how it was built, the individual sustainability, and the fact that it alone gives back to the local community. This home is a symbol of what can and should be done. Good luck to all and good day.

Hey everyone, I've read the rules about how the winner will be picked, but I'm not sure exactly how it's going to work. Is that right that several people are going to be chosen and then a winner will be picked live? Kind of like the Lake Lure Dream Home? (was it the Lake Lure, NC home, now I can't remember). Anyway, i did enjoy that kind of surprise, with the 3 finalists and then the winner picked live, but then again, it's sad for the finalists who came so close but yet so far. Are the finalists going to get some sort of consolation prize, I don't thing that was menitoned in the rules either. You see, I'm trying to figure out what is going to happen when my name is picked!! ;-)
deb, katydid, dee, southern lady and all the other bloggers out there, I'm not posting a lot, but I am following the blogs, and enjoying all the comments, good luck to all!

Just looking and reading again. Checking to see if there were any new updates. I reviewed the rooms that Vern decorated again. Definate improvements. I still would prefer the 'Green Home'. It is so bright and cheery, not to mention, cozy. 'Everything' about the 'Green Home' is incredible. The low country is beautiful in itself. Not to mention, the ocean, Beaufort, Savannah, Hilton Head, and Hardeeville. I read the history on Hardeeville and was really intrigued. I love Amerian History anyway, and this entire area is so full of our history. I would be visiting something different every weekend to learn as much as I could. Wishing good luck to everyone. The wait is almost over.

I just love those dark drapes vern used for window treatments, it keeps all the sunlight out, better when your trying to keep your house cool in the summer time, GOOD JOB VERN, Hey Deb, you was asking what part of louisiana i live in? it's a little town called leesville, 7 miles from ft.polk army base, one hour from Lake Charles which has beautiful beaches, and about a hour from toledo bend which is a huge resorvour(dam) also about a hour away from the louisiana/texas state line, and about a two and a half hour drive to new orleans, i took my kids to six flags in july of 05 a month before katrina devastated it, you know alot of celebreties and country singers came from louisiana, one of my favorites Tim McGraw, you would probably like it here, i do not, south carolina sounds GOOD to me, i also loved tennesse when lived there for a few months in elizabethton, next to johnson city and kingsport, and bristol, yep those tri cities were beautiful, lots of factory work also, i got to take my kids to Dollywood in pigion forge tennesse, they loved it, well, just giving you alittle bit more 411 on things take care, Lisa...Live Love Laugh

Hello! It is so nice to read your comments. It is incredible that in few more days we will end this beautiful dream. I am not ready to let it go.

I wish we could help the winner to pay the taxes. They should give us the option to help. What do you think? An option button to pay one dollar. We will be part of the giving circle. If we collect enough money, the rest could go to charity.
I don't know. I just feel sad that the person might not be able to pay the taxes and enjoy the this incredible house.

Maybe I am just dreaming too much.

Enjoy your summer.

MICHELLE: Welcome to the nicest group of bloggers you'll ever meet. (If you don't believe me, just hop over to the Dream Home blog...some of them are truely crazy.) deb, southern lady (so glad you are safe...gardinias...ah, does anyone know of a perfume with a true gardinia scent?), dee (me thinks it's too dark also), dana, lisa b (God Bless you and your brother.) bird lover, mary. The list could go on and on. Deb, you post the most often, with interesting information...it reminds me of two songs: First from Fiddler on the Roof, "Tradition" and second, from Disney, "If Wishing Could Make It So". I love all of you, and Good Luck, dear friends and thanks again to HGTV.

Lisa Bernard, I love Pigion Forge,Tenn.!! We just took the kids there for spring break! We went to the petting zoo. I love the beach more though, it will be just fine with me to live twenty minutes away from the beach!!

Good night 'Green Home'. I'll see you in the morning.

Good morning 'Green Home', HGTV and fellow bloggers. Only 3 days left! I have not missed one day, and I sure am going to miss blogging with everyone. This is a fabulous home, and someone is going to be blessed beyond belief with it. It may be one of us blogging here, or it could be a mail in entry. I have done both. To everyone who has entered, good luck. I am wishing each and every one of you a good day, stay healthy and stay happy. Once again, thank you HGTV for this wonderful opportunity to dream about this fantastic home.

Posted by deb – May 6, 2008 6:58 AM

The Green Home is amazing. I would love to win it,just as, everyone who knows about it. I tell my children to enter and just about anyone I talk to. It is a wonderful thing HGTV does. I watch HGTV all the time. I still wonder about the absence from sight of a microwave and a coffee maker. Is there something about them that is not GREEN. It will interesting to know. It's almost time to find out who the finalist are. We can keep dreaming 'til then.

Posted by Jackie Hughes – May 6, 2008 12:38 PM

deb, You make me laugh girl! I am so going to miss that!!You have me beat on blogs and I did not mail in an entry. However, I did enter on line even when I was on vacation in Pegion Forge, Tenn.

Posted by Dana Dryburgh – May 6, 2008 1:35 PM

I have dreamed of a home such as this GREEN HOME.
The southern charm and it being eco-friendly just sets the stage for HGTV to do this type of "prodject" again! I've entered everyday. My family and I are keeping our fingers crossed.
