The Green Home's Eco-Friendly Gardens

Posted by kwalters – April 1, 2008 10:55 AM

You won't believe how many sustainable landscaping features are packed into the Green Home's ¼-acre lot. Birdhouses and flowering plants encourage birds and butterflies to visit. (Note to the winner: Be sure to bring along your bird identification books).

palm-trees.jpg
Native and drought-tolerant plants surround the home, reducing the need for irrigation and fertilization.

pavers.jpg
Permeable concrete pavers – used on the patios, sidewalk and double ribbon driveway – harvest and filter rainwater, purifying it before it reaches the water table.

While enjoying the beautiful lagoon view from the screened porch, you can see the herb and vegetable garden, which is watered by Tradition's neighborhood irrigation system.

The Tradition community collects storm water from the street, stores it in a network of retention ponds (like the one behind the house) then uses it to irrigate neighborhood lawns. The home's rain-sensing irrigation system automatically restricts the home's system during wet weather.

back-yard-putting-green.jpg
The backyard is large enough for a game of miniature golf, but small enough to mow with an old-fashioned push mower, which eliminates the need for a standard lawn mower that is powered by fossil fuels.

Learn more about eco-friendly gardening techniques you can use in your own yard.

The green home is beautiful. I love the grounds. I also love the idea of permeable pavers that allow rainwater to seep through. I work with conservation for the past 17 years and our office does assessments concerning stormwater and drainage. I have entered to win the home. I have entered for the past Give away homes, but I told my husband and daughter that this one would be the most perfect since I am a conservationist. I have worked with conservation and conserving our natural resources for the past 17 years. I live in Conway, SC and I love Hilton Head. I have family in other states, and this would be wonderful to share the house with them while on their vacations. Well, I wish everyone luck but I am actually praying and hoping that my family will be the lucky winner. God Bless

This looks like a wonderful place to unwind, relax, and view nature.

This is really great. I love birds of all kinds and to have bird friendly plants is great. I have eight cockteils and 2 parakeets, so having them in the screened in back porch would really be a treat for them. Love the herb and vegetable gardens, too.

I love the landscaping of the yard!I've wanted a garden that attracts birds and especially butterflies for awhile now.I also like the fact that you don't have to water the gardens much and when you do it's with rain water!I'm still concerned about those alligators! Does the community allow you to put up a chain link fence to keep them out but not block your view? Some communities don't.

Posted by Dana – April 1, 2008 1:27 PM

I would like to know what products were used on the outside of the house. Is it siding? I read that the color is Prescot Green from Benjamin Moore so is it painted? If so, does it required being repainted and is that eco-friendly?

Nothing is mentioned about the metal roof and I would think there might be some eco benefits to that, but again, I can't find anything that addresses that aspect of the house.

I love the different herbs planted in the landscape and learned about some of them that I had never heard of by clicking on the link to the herb and vegetable garden. They will have beauty year round... but I can't help wanting a couple of fragrant rose bushes in the front yard and some butterfly bushes in the back yard. They require more water, fertilizer, and care, but also attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and pollenating insects for the other plants. If I won the house I would plant some of them. I have always had them around my home. Good luck to everyone!

Dear Everyone at HGTV,
My husband, Audie and I toured your Green home, my Dream home this past Saturday, and the excitement of everyone was awesome! This adoreable, environmentallly...correct home is above any LEED design, for the pleasure of living the goodlife. From the moment we pulled up to the front lawn, the enthusiasm was exhilerating. The NFP Staff of the United Way were extremely knowledgeable and kind. As we walked upon the front porch, it was so inviting, that upon entering the foyer, it seemed to say, hey look at me, aren't I Beautiful!

Well, I'm even more inspired !!
I've got the best idea come to mind, my daughter keeps asking me; what are you going to do with that ole guitar ? Well, since I'm very artistic & creative minded myself, I'm going to create a birdhouse out of the ole guitar. I'll cut out "notes" to paint and surround the guitar with after it is completed. I'll paint it green with light green & (paint/write) "Songbird's Inn" on the face of guitar and save it to place within the beautiful gardens designed, HGTV Green Home !!!!!!!!! Hey, if I don't win, maybe I'll send it out as a winner's house warming gift anyway's !!!!!!!! But my daughter & I certainly hope our luck is up to date on this Green Home.

I would love to win the home. Beauty along with functionality. Not too big, beautiful footprint, environmentally sound. Heck, I'd be happy to pitch a tent next to the firepit!

The landscaping is one of my favorite things about the Green Home. I would have to add a few potted ponytail palms. The require little water and are really beautiful greenery. I like the fact that they can be used inside or outside and will grow quite large with very little care. I also am a rose lover, but have found that the old-fashioned flora bunda type do better than the hybrids when water is a problem. We have had a drought here in Mississippi the past 2 years, so I've begun to be a lot more selective when looking for new plants, reading up on them before buying. Even though there are retention ponds for watering, I hope whomever wins the home will still consider the water required when adding new plants. Organic fertilizers also need to be used. Alcohol and water mixed in equal parts is a great bug deterent. Banana peelings are great for roses since they love potassium. Just bury them in the ground close to the bush. I had read this in a book I ordered that had homemade fertilizers and remedies. I was amazed how well this stuff works and is made from items from your house. The first year I used the banana peelings I didn't see a lot of results. But evidently it takes a while for them to decay, because the next year all my roses went crazy. I had blooms as big as saucers on a bush that had never done well, and it continued to bloom until November. It also had homemade sprays for black spot, root tonics, compost tea, rose tonic, and so many more. And the great thing is that I'm not spraying or pouring chemicals into the environment. For instance.... Rose Ambrosia: 1 cup beer, 2 tsp. instant tea, 1 tsp fish emulsion, 1 tsp hydrogen peroxide, 1 tsp dish liquid, 2 gallons warm water. Mix and pour 1 pint on each rose bush every 3 weeks. How easy is that! I'm not sure I can list the book on here, but check out your book store for natural garden solutions. There are probably several out there. Even those who aren't building or remodeling soon, there is so much more we can do to protect the environment. If I happen to win this home, Thank you HGTV for not having a lot of grass to mow! A battery powered weed eater would do the trick! Or I could let my husband use the antique push mower that only uses human energy. LOL

I love this house! My fiance and I are getting married in September and we would love to win this house to start a family eventually! Also, then we would be able to get married here, and get out of the Wisconsin cold. The design and elements are perfect, I love that it is a green house- I entered to win the dream houses in the past but this one is really perfect for us and a green lifestyle. My fiance is a photographer and there would be so many photo opportunities here! *praying to win*

My husband and I are truly impressed with your Green Home. The past years we have tried to green up our current home, but now we are looking for a little warmer climate. Your home is so ingenious in the planning and well suited for any age group. There isn't one feature that we would change, its as if you designed and built it for us. I can hardly wait to enjoy the butterflies! Good luck to everyone

Posted by laurie procida – April 2, 2008 5:51 AM

I am amazed to say the least. I would love to be able to plant my tropical plants (ok, some of them outdoors). I have a small jungle indoors, but what is even more amazing is that I do have 8 butterfly bushes, a butterfly house, a bluebird house, and a wisteria bush. I also have 4 hummingbird feeders and an oriole feeder. I love feeding the birds, and have some amazing photos and video of the hummingbirds near my front porch. I have had my wisteria for about 4 years now, but it has yet to bloom. Does anyone know if hydrangea will grow there???? I love this home and everything about it. I also have 2 bird books, 1) The Audubon Society to North American Birds, and 2) Birds Native to Michigan. I would love to add to my collection....3) Birds Native to South Carolina??????? Good luck everyone. And yes, I get lots of butterflies in the summer months, just wish it were year round.

Posted by deb – April 2, 2008 7:15 AM

Ok, I just went through my house and counted the "tropical" plants I have. I have 5 Madagascar Dragon Trees...4 of which are over 6 ft tall, I have 4 I believe they are called corn plants(some kind of palm) over 5 ft tall, I have 6 palms trees I have grown from seed (taken from my dads house in florida and not an easy task to do) they are between 1 and 2 ft tall, I have 1 what I have always called a "pony tail palm" if the leaves were streched out, it would be over 8 ft tall, and 4 other palms, not sure the name, they are only about 2 ft tall, also 2 peace plants, a bamboo that is about 1.5 ft, a money tree about 2.5 ft, aloe plant, and several other small plants. My question is, will these grow outdoors there should I be blessed enough to win this home? I know the palm trees I have grown from seed will because they are identical to the ones in the first picture. Also outside I have planted 3 azaleas, hydrangea (huge), wisteria, and I noticed in the last picture what appears to be a rhododendrom, which at one point here I had planted 5 but they did not survive the harsh winter here their first year. Every year I have grown a vegetable garden, and would love to grown herbs, haven't tackled that yet. I know it sounds like alot of plants and it is but several of them are in the same containers. Oh, and I can do putt-putt!!!!! Good luck everyone.....thanks HGTV.

My wife just reminded me that she bought the book; Audubon's Birds of America when I showed her the special features of the flower garden. We are ready to move! Every thing about this house fits our life style and I can't think of a better place than South Carolina, which by the way, is closer to family and friends.

This is a wonderful house and I love S.C. I live in ohio and I'm ready for a change this would be so great to move here I love to garden and I have 4 butterfly brushes now. This kids would love to go swimming. HGTV YOU BUILD A GREAT LOOKING HOME. this would be a wonderful change from living in a moblie home.

Another of the plants I would put in the yard is an aloe vera. I have 2 huge ones that I acquired from my husbands' grandmother years ago, and they have produced a lot of kiki's (new plants), that we have given to friends and family. We make our own mulch using dried leaves, coffee and tea grounds, banana peels, egg shells, and ash from the fireplace, which we mnix and put in a plastic barrel. It is all organic and works wonders for our gardens! Good luck to everyone on this well planned home!

Posted by Charlene – April 2, 2008 2:16 PM

I believe the book that Teresa may be referring to is Jerry Bakers book regarding natural garden solutions. This book has everything in it. It is a wonderful book, and I have used many of the solutions. I believe someone had made comment also on electric boat motors and noise polution. That is the nice thing about electric motors, there is no noise. On a visit to my dad in Florida several years ago, I went to Homassassa to a wildlife park, one of the largest rehabilitation parks for manatees, and they use electric motors on their boats to prevent water pollution because the water is so pure. It is wonderful to see the measures being taken to preserve what we have for our grandchildren and future generations. What a wonderful place this would be to retire to. I love the fact that you can walk, walk, walk to everything, including the gym, and hey right outside your back door is "putt-putt".

Posted by deb – April 2, 2008 3:14 PM

WELL YOU ALL DID A WONDERFUL JOB AT THIS HOME. IT IS MY STYLE OF HOME WHEN YOU WORK WITH THE ENVIROMENT. I LOVE THE INSIDE AND THE OUT THE YARD IS GREAT AND ITS BIRD AND ANIMAL FRIENDLY. PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. SOMEDAY I MAY JUST GET ONE.

I would certainly love to be involved in a project such as this, a lovely place to spend my retirement years with family and friends. Yes, it surely would suit me to a "G"...You should be proud...excellent job HGTV!

Thank you for making me more aware of a green home and an eco-garden. I will be looking for green home materials to update our home. I hope the awareness will be impacted by all individuals to help make a difference. I am always encouraging my children to plant trees and flowers. They also are becoming knowledgable about the green team. My husband and I would enjoy living at Hilton Head. It would be an enjoyable change, and a place to share with our children, grandchildren and friends. My family and friends have been helping me since I fell and broke my hip. I would love to give something back to them in return other than thanks and love. This would be a gift for vacations. The green home is beautiful and eco friendly. That is an accomplishment in itself. Congrats to all of you. You did a good job.

For anyone who likes the idea of watering with rain water, consider attaching a rain barrel to the gutter downspout. It can be decorative, and with a spigot a buried soaker hose can utilize rain water to water your garden.

Dear HGTV, Can you tell us how many homes will be in the community, and will they all be Green Homes? I thought I had read that they were, but just curious. I love this home, and tour it everyday. The yard is just as beautiful as the home itself, And the fans on the porches and in the homes....OH YEAH!!! I put the fans in my current home and love them.

Calling a development Hilton Head when it is more than 20 miles inland from Hilton Head Island doesn't seem right. Also I would like to know how loud the I-95 traffic noise sounds from the dream home.

I just truely hope whoever wins this home will be so forever appreciative, will fully understand and utilize the eco friendly "everything", and put them to use on a daily basis. Thanks again HGTV for the chance to dream, and to really educate alot of people.

This is my first time on the HGTV site. I really loved what they did to make this world more aware of what's going on today. They did such a wonderful job on this house I just love it. I wish I could build my own Green House but of course I would have to have my own land to do that.Everybody thanks for listing. God bless you all.

Just toured again. Aaahhh! Breathtaking. I love everything about this home. Even the garage is fantastic. I don't think there is a better home out there. To serve the purpose that it does and to be as beautiful as it is. I can't keep away from the site. I wish I lived close enought to tour it as some have. The paint scheme to the lawn...just beautiful.

Hi everyone. I have been meaning to remark on this, but then I start looking at the home, and end up daydreaming. Anyway, my post office gives away little plastic bags for recycling of ink cartridges. You just put the cartridge in the bag, seal it and drop it in the mailbox, postage paid. The same is done with old cell phones, they are given to soldiers overseas or to victims of domestic violence. Double purpose and a wonderful thing. Just an fyi so that others may check their local post office for these items. Every little bit helps. Have a good day everyone. Waiting for the next update on the gorgeous home.

Posted by deb – April 4, 2008 11:28 AM

Just watched the HGTV Green Home TV special and love, love, love everything about this house. Doing all I can to become green - started recycling, soon will add a rain barrell for watering my herb and vegetable gardens. Use lots of antique/used furniture pieces. My husband and I took up flat-water kayaking on the lakes near our home in East Tennessee a couple of years ago and it would be a new experience kayaking in the low country. Have two young grandchildren who would love the kids room. Wish the decorator had her a show on HGTV - all the HGTV homes are beautifully furnished and decorated - my style completely. My artist/husband might have to do a couple of special paintings for the home (using the existing colors of course). Who wouldn't love to win and live in this house?

Posted by Sue – April 4, 2008 11:42 AM

This is a truely outstanding home. We live in Virginia, and try to recycle, we save all
food waste for fertilizing our vegetable and herb
gardens. We also have an osmosis system, it truely makes our water, which comes from our well
so much better. Living green is the way to go.
We are now working on improving our energy costs.
Good luck to all.

Nice landscape plan. I discovered important information in Tom Ogren's books on the landscape and how to select clean air plants. His books represent yet another way that allows each of us to do our part in producing cleaner air. High levels of pollen can be reduced by better understanding - the disproportionate cultivation of all-male "litter-free" plants, which bear no fruit but produce everwhelming amouts of pollen. Awesome read! Know the green home can be green inside and OUT!

What a wonderful gift for the environment and community. Giving back naturally and being aware of how we effect our eco-system has finally arrived full stream. It's a rainy day today. I can imagine waking up in this beautiful home. I would love my coffee before day on the screened porch, just taking in the great peaceful time and setting. Later we could have brunch on the veranda and discus our daily activities. I know I would love to visit all the shops that Linda visited to interior decorate this beautiful home and get to know some of the area people. Winding down the day to this beautiful home. What would be more relaxing than to sit and look at all this beauty? DEE

Hey Guys, Deb, I must give you an E for effort. And I love your comments. I must tell you that the one thing that will grow with beauty there is gardenias. I live in Tennessee now and they will not winter over outside. But there they are beautiful. And the aroma fills the air when they bloom and it is like glory!!! Especially at night.I love it there so much and I miss it. Growing up on the ocean - it gets in your blood. I remember when I first came to Tn. from D.C. and went fishing, I was standing on some rocks and started to wonder when the tide would start coming in. Then I thought, you idiot!...there is no tide in Tennessee!!!! Anyway my friends there say if things are right in September you can bag some fresh shrimp along with the crabs you can get most any time. Boy do I love fresh seafood!! IWANT THIS HOUSE SO BADLY,I CAN ALMOST TASTE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love and happy fishing, Laura

Hello everyone, I have to tell everyone that this house is my DREAM HOUSE. I have lived in Chicago all my life and my dream is to retire to someplace like this and pursue a Green lifestyle.which I find difficult to do where I live, the houses are so close, no space. All my life I have dreamed of living in a home like this. It's as if the folks at HGTV reached into my mind and heart and created my dream. Thank you HGTV for allowing me to see my dream come true. I'm praying hard for over this.

Posted by Brenda Hayes – April 11, 2008 1:40 PM

Wow, it seems like everyone thinks that kissing up will help them win this thing. It's a nice home but I've seen homes that were much "greener" then this. If I were to win it ; I'd sell it and buy a greener home. The solar panel looks like an after thought. As far as I'm concerned all lawn is a misuse of space as it uses more water and cemicals than any other mass planting in a home environment. I know many of you will think I'm nagging or whining but I'm not trying to say the home is 'bad' in anyway. It's just not my idea of green. It's more my idea of an addvertisement for a planned community in hilto head. This isn't meant to be disrespectful or decisive but rather to open an honest dialog between the bloggers about what it means to be green. Blessed be.

I love everything about the Dream House. I am from S.C. but has been gone from there for quite some time. My mother lives in Estill, SC and is getting older. I have two sisters who also live there. It would be wonderful to live in Hilton Head, just an hour from my family. This would truly be a dream come true. Thank you HGTV.

In reading the comment that was written by Terri 4/12.My response..every little step helps in helping to prevent global warming. This home is beautiful. There are many "green" features. You should praise their efforts.

First of all, I love HGTV ! I love the fact that they are giving away an eco-friendly home. I am an Environmental Science Major, and was initially going to write you about all the pavers, but later read they were permeable and filter the water. Like everyone else.... I would love to win this home ! Good Luck to everyone, especially me hahah.

I love the idea of a green stand-alone home. But I live in a condo community. I'd love to see them turn a community like mine - which needs a ton of help as it is - figure out how we as a community can become (1) more green; (2) save water; (3) and do it in a way that doesn't cost each owner a ton.

As retired folks in SW Fl, we are aware of the eco ways of growing plants and saving water. I love the beautiful home and being on the water is a plus for my husband, as he loves to fish. I will enter everyday and who knows, we could finish our retirement yrs. in S.C. 974164

This home is amazing! Beautiful design, peaceful location, & environmentally friendly - what else is there? There are so many amazing features. Congrats to HGTV for creating this home - and thank you for giving it away! Good luck to everyone - including my family! Anyone would be incredibly lucky to live there.

Yes, I have been touring again. I sure wish I lived close enough to actually "tour" the home, but that might make me want it even more, (if that's possible). I cannot explain how I feel about this landscaping. I absolutely LOVE tropical plants. They can't be grown outdoors here in Michigan, but I sure have them inside. Palms trees I have grown from seed, 6 of them, from my late fathers palm trees from Florida. I guess it's like bringing part of the south and tropical feeling to me.

I have never been much of a gardener, but the landscaping of the Green Home is inspiring--and makes me want to get out there and get my hands dirty! It is beautiful, and seems manageable. I have always loved the old-fashioned push lawn mowers too--they remind me of my childhood. I didn't see one included with the house, but I would get one right away. Happy dreaming--and green gardening.

I cannot say enough about this home. As with others here, I would love to win this home. It is so dignified, and so charming.

Just tour the home again. I try to do that everyday to imagine me and my family in it. HGTV did a terrific job. My TV is always on HGTV except when I watch extreme makeover - home edition. My husband even watches it. He likes all of the gardening shows- he gets great ideas - then applies them to our lawn and garden. We always watch house hunters together and I almost always pick the same house as they do. Can't wait for the knock at my door and the camera roll in to say "The beautiful green home is yours" When taking the tours (so many times), i didn't see any solar landscaping lights outside. Didn't know if they were any. If not, that is fine, because I have some beautiful solar landscape lights that would look beautiful. They actually changes color. I leave them on clear but at christmas time i change them - they go from green to red - to blue-to clear. they are beautiful and would look even better in my new "green" home. Well, good wishes to everyone. God bless us all.

This is a cute little cottage, good job.
Please tell me what happened to all the older trees? I see them in the background (far away).
Also, I see muddy puddles in the photos of the empty lots surrounding the home. What was done to prevent flooding?

Posted by CK – May 4, 2008 1:51 PM

I want to plant my palm trees outside. Can't do that here in MI. They are doing so good inside, but I know if I get them back to a tropical climate, where they belong, they will do so much better, so would I. I always tell my husband, if it's under 70*, it's cold. I could actually do without a/c, just give me a fan.
