HGTV Green Home

Carter's Super Secret Surprise

Posted by kwalters – April 4, 2008 3:01 PM

In today's post, I'll reveal the first pictures of Carter Oosterhouse's secret gift to the HGTV Green Home. Even if you saw the special and have been thoroughly spoiled, you're still in for a treat. These pictures show, up close and personal, the handmade table Carter built for the patio off the South Veranda.

carter-table-for-blog.jpg
Carter made the table – which easily seats six – from lumber recycled from a school house, and the trestle legs and weathered top are a perfect fit for this cottage-style home.

carter-table2-for-blogjpg.jpg
To keep the table from being too plain, he added a decorative metal strip down the center, which will patina as the table ages.

Talk about the perfect spot to share a meal with family and friends.

Thanks, Carter, for a truly special addition to the HGTV Green Home 2008!

Well, I was sent an email to enter your home giveaway, and I must say, "This is my dream home." So I will enter most of the days, i'm sure it will be impossible for me to win, I live in California, but I will pray on the matter, and if it's meant I will move to South Calolina Coast. That is a very beautiful home you have built! VERY!

I just watched the TV special today was so impressed with Carter's table and these pictures just confirmed its beauty, day or night. Thank you Carter. Looking at the picture of the fire pit made me wonder. Surely you could roast hot dogs and toast marshmellows, but would it be feasible to set up a grill to BBQ? I have a question for decorator, Linda. What is the purpose of the lamp in the corner of the kitchen counter? I love this home much more than the DH08, and not just because it is GREEN. It is truly beautiful. And to bloggers who say "the home is perfect, I wouldn't change a thing", I say, why not make it a bit more personal. I've been collecting art for years, and I would start with the powder room off the foyer. I would make that tiny white space so charming. Well, I'm having pleasant dreams, and hope you all will too. THANKS HGTV.

I have entered everyday to win this amazing home.
Jake & Linda & Carter have wowed me!
Truly a Beautiful Home.

My husband and I are currently touring the country in a RV. We are both retired from the Navy and his second career is a nature photographer. We will be in Alaska on a photo shoot when the winner is announced. What ways do you contact house winners besides the ambush approach?

Posted by Judy Morgan – April 4, 2008 7:39 PM

After the year the I am having,(my husband passed
away in Jan. and my sister in March), this would
be a "dream house" for my whole family to share.

Posted by Jean Matecki – April 4, 2008 7:53 PM

I just love this gorgeous green home. For the past two years, I have been reading about and looking at houses that are partially green. I have some allergies which do not do well in a "regular" house. I would just love to win this home and occupy it. I live in the Southern New England area of Massachusetts and it would not be a problem to live in this wonderful community. My daughter, son in law and three beautiful grandsons could come on vacation to visit frequently. Also, my sister, two brothers and my 90 year old mom would be welcome for as long as they wish to visit. I am keeping my fingers crossed for good luck!

I love the table but than I don't know why I would not. I like everything Carter does. His work is always very nice.

Posted by Stephenie Hunt – April 4, 2008 8:21 PM

Love the handmade table Carter built. I had already seen it on the Green Home special. It fits perfectly with the design of the house and with the "Green Theme". Thumbs up Carter! Thanks!

WONDERFUL !!
Several setting's to have a great dinner !!
Then including the warmth of the fire pit area.
HGTV, you are really wanting to spoil the winner !!

I'm so ready to win this Green Home !!

This is a fabulous home!! All the Dream Homes should be Green homes. Thank you HGTV for thinking of our future and environment. Oh...Great table you built Cater.

Posted by Sharon Reichle – April 4, 2008 9:14 PM

This is a gorgeous house. It is beautiful inside and out. I would love the opportunity to see this house and potentially live in it. Carter did a beautiful job.

Posted by Nicky – April 4, 2008 9:49 PM

I was disapointed the roof was not made with solar panels or shingle. I know they are expensive but it would have been encouraging.Perhaps it might inspire people that can afford it to do the right thing.

Posted by Georgette Brady – April 4, 2008 9:49 PM

The table is perfect! Just what the veranda needed :-)

Posted by Elaine – April 4, 2008 11:06 PM

That table is just beautiful and I love the idea of recycled wood, but that is the point of this home, which makes it even more desirable. I would love to live in his home and we are planning to move to the area after my son graduates high school this year. We have lots of relatives in the area and this looks perfect for entertaining. This is truly my dream home.

Posted by Lucille – April 5, 2008 6:53 AM

Wow...nice workmanship- all the details are so well thought out. Keeping positice thoughts and hoping we win too. Best of luck to all!

Posted by Doris – April 5, 2008 7:08 AM

I didn't get the chance to get back in here yesterday, but I did watch the special on Carters table. He did an excellant job. I love the color of the wood, and yes, the metal strip is such a classy touch, the trim boards, and it alone is such a conversation piece. Love it. I'm dreaming.

I got a little sidetracked prior to blogging. I was reading all the tips with gardens, pests, etc. In a previous blog, I stated I had a bluebird house, and butterfly house, I had gotten from my local conservation office. I had forgotten about the bat house, which I got at the same time. I was unaware that bats eat beetles, I got it to help control the mosquito population. So, after reading your articles I got a few new tips, some I knew, some I didnt. My butterfly bushes are purple, hydrangea blue, so I hope I will attract the bees. Moles, voles, literally tear up my lawn every year. Think I "might" try the pine scented cleaner, not sure. However I do plant marigolds all the way around my garden to keep some pests out, and it works. My biggest problem is japanese beetles. Slugs anyone??? The beer in a cup actually works, funny thing is, something took the cup out of the ground and drank it. Would have been funny to see. Good luck everyone. I'm sure I'll be back in here today. Later.

Posted by deb – April 5, 2008 8:07 AM

I love how creative you Carter, ;-) Have you any ideas for me on how to make something that will keep the birds and squarles off my new fresh garden bed, before I began to plant my new plants that are almost ready to go outside and into the garden bed? This is my first time to attemp to make something like this on my own... Any tip will be greatly appreciated Carter.
Thanks for your creative mind.
I know how to bake like a chef. let me know if you need any tips.
TheGreen House is sooo me. I would love to win this of all the houses I have seen built, not to say those are not beautiful. I just very simple.

I love the house, and the use of old & new put together, however I have one question about the master bedroom. Does it have closets? I have not seen them in any of the videos or pictures. I would love to live there, I can picture how wonderful it would be to be out on the deck with family & friends.

Posted by kelly frederick – April 5, 2008 8:49 AM

OH, MY GOODNESS! I just viewed the beautiful
table that Carter made from the lumber of an
old school house ... my heart just STOPPED :)

THIS IS MY DREAM HOME !!! and I pull the website
up constantly all day long just to 'dream' and
picture myself in every nook & cranny.

I have a daughter that lives in Savannah,Ga. and
is a school teacher. It would just be amazing
to be near her and to share the blessings of
such an amazing home.

Currently, we do not own a home ... this would
be a DREAM COME TRUE !

Posted by Becky – April 5, 2008 9:35 AM

Carter, I love the outdoors, the varanda and your table. I'm sure this area will be of great use. I can imagine sitting around with friends or family eating, with an outside TV on your favorite sports(nascar).I could place a hammock for the guy's and a swing or glider for the ladies.Several lovely plants of color hanging and maybe a center focal area using a statue waterfall with lighting to accent. Of course what piece would be the most needed? Your table !! Built to brag about!! Maybe I will win and get to entertain in this beautiful home. Good job!! DEE

Chris you have truly brought the feel and ambiance of the area to "roost" with your table for outdoor dining and entertaining. The best part of the living in this area is the relaxation and enjoyment of the out-of-doors accomplished with friends and family around this beautiful/bountiful table. I can't wait to enjoy a glass of white wine and bounty of the seas around it! thank you.

I didn't think HGTV could beat Islamorada, but this home is does it. Green technology, first floor master, golf cart community. This is a "baby boomer" dream home. Send Lauren Lake to ambush me and I will be so much more excited than the last winner.

Posted by Judy – April 5, 2008 3:38 PM

This home is absolutely beautiful. It is so warm and inviting. What a peaceful and comfortable world the winner will have to come home to. I really love the hardwood flooring and I have been looking all over the site for what type of hardwood it actually is. (Sorry I just can't find it and I'm sure it is there somewhere.) It is just so pretty. Can someone tell me the name brand and the type of hardwood it is? I'd appreciate it.
The whole house is magnificent. I love it!

The surroundings seem so peaceful and relaxing.
AtaBoy to you Carter for such originalty and reuse of old but good craftmanship door. Not too much of that left anymore. Great Going Carter.

I was just wondering.... if I win the Green House and Carter's table... would Carter come over and have dinner with me??? I have a not so secret crush on him!!!

Posted by Becky – April 6, 2008 3:59 PM

I must say, this makes my heart sink. My husband and I always do as much to be Green!

And, now with economy, at the start of losing our home.
So, early this year, I said, "lets start over, and move to where theres water & Lighthouses, and the Carolinas were it"! (Mind you, we cannot afford it, but I'd live in a box under a tree, just to see that view!)

I will say, I pray the people that win this house, realize, they are Green, and can get others to do their part too!

I am in PA, and not far, my "Dream Home" would be in the Carolinas...I wonder if dreams do come true?
Well, guess we'll find out in May! My birthday is in May, and my Husband, and our anniversary...What a present that would be!

But, if we dont win, congrats to the winners, you are very lucky, and hope you "stay Green", and push others to go green !

Hey, HGTV, And yes Carter and Crew, You are great, and hope this will be a Trend! Start making all the Dream Homes Green (And the beautiful Fire Pit makes it perfect, and Carters Table outside is beautiful too!)

You guys rock, push the Green,
it only takes a little bit, but we all can do a "little & get alot back" by going Green !

Posted by Maria – April 6, 2008 5:55 PM

Are the plans for Carter's table available on the website?

Posted by VH – April 6, 2008 6:47 PM

Love the house! Where can I get details about the screened in porch and the ground covering for the bbq pit?

Posted by Mark Strauss – April 6, 2008 7:07 PM

I can't stay away from this home. The home itself, the landscaping and outdoors, the fact that you can walk to everything, and the location. As I stated in an earlier blog, my son graduated from Parris Island USMC base, but I never got a chance to see any of the area because it rained so much. I am financially able to take on the costs of this home, taxes, insurance, etc. And moving? Like yesterday. I am done with the Michigan winters. To sit on the north veranda and watch the sunsets, or near the waters edge, and the covered porch leading to the north veranda, oh my gosh!! As long as it would take me to pack is how fast I could be there. Thanks again HGTV, a person has to have dreams.
Good luck to all.

Hi!
I'm Donna a 57 year old and my husband is 71 and his birthdaynis in May. It would bbe such a nice birthday present to move into the Green Home because he could wake up and walk outside and go fishing. He has dementia in the middle stages and is on medication to help to slow the progression of the disease. The Home is georgous. The table that Carter made is a perfect contrubition to the Green Home. We have another Lady we share the Rental Home we live in that is just like a sister to both of us. She is 60 Years old and works 5 days a week. She pays the balance on the bills that we can't afford. We really could move into the Green Home and enjoy the perfect location and setting around the Green Home. Good Job Green House Builders Suppliers and everyone involved in the Green Home Project.
Thank You Everyone

Thank you for this chance to dream, for we all need more of that. And thank you for helping each of us to see more clearly who the people are that we love. The friend contact section makes it very clear where my heart is. Who else but to the loves of my life could I give away my chance to win this wonderful home. It is almost silly how generous I am feeling and I really haven't done anything but share this opportunity. This is great fun! Good Luck to everyone and God bless you all.

Anxiously waiting for the next updates. I watched the special on this home yesterday. I can't say anymore than I have. This home is absolutely sensational. There is going to be one very very blessed person to win this home.

This is to Carter Oosterhouse. I love the table that you have built to go with the green house. It really does add that little cottage charm. So, here's the deal if I am so lucky to win this house I would invite you over to share lunch eating from this awesome vintage looking table. The selection of the chairs are perfect for this style of table too. So HGTV I'm crossing my fingers that I win. (I will make this beautiful house into a home with lots of TLC).

Carter,
While admiring your fine work last night, I never anticipated actually owning an original table for my personal collection. You have an eye for woodworking, color, and proportion; the table fits in beautifully with the decor of the Green House.

Any family will cherish the gift of the finely crafted wooden table yet strongly made, is distinctive.

A family shall treasure the gift for its beauty and craftsmanship, but even more is a constant reminder of your friendship.

You can expect that who ever enters the Green House will notice the work and leave familiar with your name and many endearing memories shared around this family friendly entertainment table.

Thanks so much for indulging me; I’ll take good care of my treasure. (It could Happen!) HGTV staff thank you for your energy saving design and your education on how one homeownner can make a difference.

I watched the Green home tour with Carter last evening. All I can say is WOW! What a house. It was a real education to find out about all the green products available for you home these days. The house is put together perfectly. It is everything one would want in a home. So thanks HGTV, it sure is fun to dream in Green.

Hi My name is Jessica Hampton.I have lived in Hilton Head since 1997 and am currently living just minutes from the Lovely Green Home. And until May of 2004,I was a single mother of two who worked as a dental assistant. Then the most wonderful man walked into my life. My husband Clay who moved here from Chattanooga,TN.We are newly weds who will be married a year as of May 17,2008!He is currently able to see the exterior of the home daily because, he installs audio video in the same area.He also leads the worship at our church.I am truly grateful for how he has worked so hard to care for us, so that I could stay home and home school and care for the girls. This first year has been rough financially but we've made it. Our lease is up this May AND our anniversary. We are waiting to see what will happen with this.I have been praying for a home long before this one ever came about and this would not only be an answer to another prayer, but the best anniversary present God could ever give us.The bible says that every good thing comes from God,it also says that he gives us the desires of our heart. I believe that the people who built this home did it in excellence. If I had the choice my home would be a green home.Nothing is impossible with the Lord.May the perfect people win this home.

Posted by Jessica Hampton – April 7, 2008 11:26 AM

Please use a new decorator, this one's style is one dimensional and there is always at least one room that is garish. How could you sleep in the neon green bedroom from the last dream house or the school bus yellow or blazing blue of this one?
HGTV has so many fabulous designers. I think it is time to make a switch. This designer has a really definite style which I doubt goes with everyone's tastes. I nominate Candice Olson as the next designer!

I have dreamed of living in this area for many years. This is truly the perfect house for me...I love the lowland and the photos are truly awesome. I pray that I am the winner as this would be a prayer answered.

Believe, and one can achieve...I am a 36 yr. old woman currently working two jobs to support my husband and children (he has colon cancer), I cannot tell you what a "dream come true" it would mean for us to be able to move into this home of such magnitude...It is also ironic, because my husband has never been to Hilton Head, and has always dreamed of going. Beyond its beauty, this green "house" could offer our family a place to call "home"......Thanks, Aimee in Massachusetts

Posted by Aimee Roy – April 7, 2008 2:04 PM

Oh MY! I, like so many others would love to win such a home! This would be perfect for us as a retired couple working from home. Just wow! I agree with an earlier comment that ALL dream homes should be green :)

Posted by Candy – April 7, 2008 2:17 PM

Amazing at every turn. What a truly unique home. Dream home is right, only in your dreams is something so functional, perfect and liveable. It's decked out at every corner. Carson, our 12 year old thinks that the green is the icing on the cake for this home.

I love this home. not too big. not too small. Just right! Just what I want to retire in:)

Posted by catrina – April 7, 2008 2:24 PM

WOW...you are right! What a treat from Carter! You Rock Carter! The ONE thing I loved about this house was all of the areas outside. I love the outdoors and the tables and screened porches (I live in SC so I know the state bird is the mosquito..hehe) are an aswesome touch! What a perfect place to raise a family and just enjoy life! I will pray that someone special receives this home! Thank you HGTV for doing what you do!

Posted by Stephanie – April 7, 2008 3:08 PM

A real beauty, but I can't see anywhere how large any of the rooms are or what is the total size of the house. I was hoping "green" this year was going to change to "blue." Earth is the water planet and appears blue from space. HGTV could go a long way in promoting "blue."

Posted by Alden – April 7, 2008 3:17 PM

wow, love the table carter, again here i am trying again to make this dream come true. i.ll pretend i'm dorothy in the wizard of oz, o.k. clicking my heels, i wanna go home, i wanna go home, i wanna go home, did i win it yet?

Posted by patricia – April 7, 2008 3:50 PM

I love every HGTV home, but I can honestly say that this one is my favorite. I love the green home. It is absolutly gorgous. It looks so peaceful. I can see my family sitting on one of the many porches or by the beach and enjoying the sunset :) It looks like such a relaxing, but beautiful house. Perfect!

The green house is such a needed home to built it make me think of my child hood my stepfather work for the.
Mississippi Forest commission when I was growing up we planting tree climbing up in tower to watch for forest fire we even had a club in school it was great we learned from an early age the impotence that nature was.

An an elementary teacher - it was awesome as well as toching to know the timbers for the outside dining table were recycled lumber from an old school house - so much character and love in this eco friendly home...

This home is exquisted opps spelled that wrong, but heres the jest of all, the home construction and the design along with a gooddesigner has made the differnce and I hope that everyone that can afford to go see this home does. All of you lests save the planet earth lets all go green as much as we can. None of can not afford not too. We need to save all the green from our forrest to the mountains so our children and our childrens children have place to enjoy like the rest of us. Great work HGTV, I do enjoy watching all the shows as much as possible, some of the most talented people I have ever known although not personally I still feel like each one of you are like family and a good neighbor, keep up all the good work all of you. As this Southern Lady would say, Ya'll are great! or was that Tony The Tiger??? anyway all of you are a good bunch of people.

Where are the floor plans?

Posted by Roger – April 7, 2008 7:04 PM

ALEXIS; I believe Candice Olson is from Canada, and I love her designs too, but far too expensive for either DREAM or GREEN homes. Overall, Linda does a fine job. I love that she is reusing furniture in the GH so perfectly. But Linda, are you listening? Just two complaints. First is the color green. You seem to be addicted to this vile shade that even I cannot mention what my friends are calling it. The second is BEDS. Always beds with posts sticking up.....for what purpose? And the Guest Bedroom bed....what is that headboard made of? Linda, you are great and I hope to meet you someday. Pleasant dreams

I must say the Green Home would be a Low-Country
dream come true. I live here and can truly appreciate the natural beauty of the house. Carter, the table was a beautiful touch to the veranda!

Dear HGTV,

I LOVE the Green Home's floor plan and Linda's awesome interior design and accessories! However, I worry about entertaining family and friends at Carter's lovely table on the veranda and having an ALLIGATOR crawl out of the lake and join us! Do you think that the developers of the Tradition golf community could make sure that the lake is reptile-free? It would be so nice to be able to use the lake for swimming and fun in the water! Thanks for giving us the opportunity to win the Green home!

HELLO, I just wondering if Carter will working on the HGTV Dream Home? Will it be green since it's in CA. I hope it is.

Posted by Mary – April 7, 2008 7:53 PM

Ok, I'm back. I am admiring this home several times a day. I don't write every time I visit, because I have said everything there is to say about this home. Would I love to live here? Absolutely. Could I afford it? Absolutely. Would I respect what HGTV and the design team have done? Absolutely. Could I move right away? Absolutely. I am medically retired, (a 3 level cervical fusion). No, I am not complaining, I am a very blessed and fortunate person. I can walk, talk, feel, hear, see. And I am not giving a sad song and dance. I am simply stating I am ready and able to move. Ready to get out of the cold weather. And I want to plant my tropical jungle that I have indoors, outdoors. I love the fact that this home is so green, and oh heck, love it all. Again, good luck everyone. And thanks HGTV for the dream.

Hi. My name is Barbara Willis and my husband is Tony Willis. What an awesome house. I sure hope that the Good Lord sees fit for my husband and me to retreat to this house. I feel sure it would do a world of good for his Chron's disease. The house and the atmosphere would most definitely be so soothing. If we don't win, I hope whoever does needs the same relaxing environment as well. I will be sending up my prayers! I love all the extra details and the table Carter built as well as the area with the fire pit. It is awesome. Just looking at the the rooms and the house gives me a sense of peace. I can only imagine what it must be like to experience it first hand.

The Green House would be a dream come true. To have such a beautiful house on the wonderful island of Hilton Head is to wonderful for words. The Green House has so many delightful features, and I love the color of green, just like my father's eyes. He had the best green eyes, myself & my daugther have his green eyes, but then they are not just lke his. I love the outdoor rooms as it feels, with the firepit area and the beautiful table to have guest over to eat and enjoy a good fire. My husband could look a fire all night. The inside of the house is unbeleiveable beautiful. The kitchen, pantry are great,I just can not say everything I like about the house. I sure hope to win, a dream come true!

Posted by Jeannette – April 7, 2008 8:55 PM

The table is definitely one in a million and, along with the house, a dream come true. My husband and I are currently doing what we can go 'green' with our rental property. One of the concerns that I had were the bunkbeds in the children's room. With two grandchildren that would be visiting, the dolphins seem threatening and dangerous with their sharp points. Not a good idea. Otherwise, I'm sold!

Hi, my husband David and I finally had a chance, after almost 8 yrs, to take a vacation.... because he loves to play golf we decided to go to Hilton Head, S.C. We live in the Pocono Mountains in Pa and our winters are extremely cold, snowy/icy and very long. I have never been to any of the southern coastal states and couldn't wait to go. I just truly fell in love with the area and all the palm trees and beautiful blooming flowers and blooming trees.. - I love how all the businesses and malls just blend into the landscape - everything has that southern charm to it and everything is immaculately manicured...I couldn't believe my eyes when we passed the tall entrance pillars with Tradition written on it, I was so excited....the next morning we went back and were impressed with the beautiful entrance to Tradition and the main building where everything was set up with all the information about the green house...we took the bus tour to the house....I must say the ride to the house was beautiful, seeing the golf course and the different water ways and some of the model homes was so nice, Tradition will definitely be a wonderful community to live in ...for me it was just like a dream to see everything in person...when we pulled up to the house it was just so well designed - the sidewalk up to the house and all the landscaping around was just so inviting, the front porch with the ceiling fans just made you want to sit there and enjoy your surroundings. Before entering the home we put on little botties over our shoes to keep the green house as clean as possible from outdoor pollutants - the entire tour of the house inside and outside was magnificent - the floors, furniture, heating and cooling systems etc. - the outside furniture and patios is just so perfect... it was hard for me to believe that most of the products in this home were green, the people involved with this project green house have definitely put together a dream for someone....we also loved the spacious garage and of course what was in it...the SUV is really nice and of course looked better than what I could make out on the web-site and of course the golf cart and clubs - what a perfect ending to a dream...Thanks HGTV for your smart ideas and gifts...Angelika

Love the house, fun to dream. One question.Someone said that you pick the
winner's by their income. What does that mean?
This may be a stupid question but I haven't read
all of the information about the contest. Thanks.

My husband could not understand it, if he didn't have to have to fix roof, yard work, no painting, ext. No words that I can say after seeing this beautiful home, other than what a wonderful thing HGTV is doing for some lucky family.
Thanks

Good Morning all, and happy dreaming. What can one say? Of course the home is beautiful. This home just seems so peaceful. Knowing one could have the peace and comfort of such a home. The solar power, the water system, love the metal roof, the recycled woods used, the refurbishing of used furnitures, the natural cottons used. Here's a challenge..does anyone know where you can buy USA made cotton kitchen (or even bath) towels?? I have always preferred the mom and pop businesses over the "big guys". And I prefer to buy USA made. Oh yes, I would love to own this home, as all of us would. Good luck everyone and keep praying.

This beautiful home would be the answer to my prayers. My townhome here in FL has been on the market for two years and I have lowered the price several times - winning this "DREAM HOME", I could aution off my home here and move on with my life. I can only dream ,,

I'm so excited to have the chance to win such a wonderful home. I would love to be able to raise my children here and change our lifestyles too. I am very concerned with my children's and their children's future so having this house would help me to be able to take care of our earth and their future.

I have been checking out the YUKON and it's really nice. If I should win it would really be a great package. I love the soft color, classy appearance and the clout of driving around in this great vehicle. I would need it to collect the groceries for Carter's table. HA !! dee

Posted by dee – April 8, 2008 1:19 PM

To Terry
I don't think that income is an option for choosing the winner. Do your research !! I come from a family where mom & dad made (eleven). We didn't have much but I'm not poor. I may not have had all I wanted growing up, but I'm sure I had all I needed. I haven't seen any of the previous winners flowning or acting as if they bought themselves in to the sweepstakes. If I should win you will know for sure it is not a money thing but I again entered with the sight that everything has tax and upkeep. Those who have an interest in buying can purchase next door. HA !! dee

Carter,

Thank you for such a lovely table. You did a great job. It is absolutely gorgeous.

My children (especially my daughter) love the idea of the green house. We visit the web site daily. Me entering for a chance to win and she likes looking at the rooms using the 360 tour.

Thank you for giving us something special to dream about for at least a while until the lucky winner is announced.

Dream Dream Dream, that is all I do is dream about winning a fine home that HGTV makes. I have entered on about every home they have built. This Green Home is one of the finest. Carter did a great job on the table. But Carter Can do about anything. Still Dreaming - Good luck to all that enters.

Posted by Iris Stricker – April 8, 2008 3:02 PM

This green home is the best! I love everything about it and will be dreaming and hoping I am the lucky one to win it.

Posted by LouAnn – April 8, 2008 3:23 PM

I have read the stories of past dream home winners and those who were poor or working class have lost the homes due to the amount of federal taxes on the win which is treated as a gambling win and taxed up to 1/2 the value of the prize. Then there are the property taxes. I think you have an obligation to prepare people for this. It would be even better if you can figure out a way to help with this so that a win would really mean that an ordinary person could live there without having to sell everything immediately and maybe even then, not making enough money to pay the taxes.

DEB: I have been following your MANY posts, and know how much you want to win this GH. I know how much you want to give up your moles and voles for alligators (that's a joke, more on the reptile subject later). I know how much you want to plant your palms in SC soil. But deb, darlin', if you don't win (and I wish you the best of luck), surely you could sell or rent your home in MI and buy a neighboring Green Home. Wonder if you'll be on the blog after the winner is chosen. I hope so. FCOLE; Please clear up the "picking the winner by their income" and also the alligator problem. As I understand it, the lagoon is "man made" to recycle rain water to be used to water the vegetation. Are there alligators, are there fish? This is the BEST home that HGTV has offered for someone to win. Thank you, and pleasant dresms everyone.

We thank you and all your Friends at HGTV and will enjoy to see whoever may win the Home, however both my husband and I are soon to retire from many years of Law Enforcement and to win anything would be a miracle and blessing to us.

i just dont like it when adults say that this is their ''house'' and that they already own it in their hearts.i got my hopes up like that with the hgtv dream home. and i am 12. so i think it is very childish to say that you own the house just because you prayed or whatever. i pray to, does that mean i can start packing? no. so for the people in denial, grow up.

I love the Green Home and have always dreamed of living on the water. Green is a favorite color of mine, too, and the energy and enviromental saving ideas that went into the building of this home are commendable. This home is beautiful and uniquely decorated. It would be a great place to retire(I'm near retirement).
What a lovely, peaceful setting- a home to really enjoy and entertain in.It has all the amenities anyone could ever want. I enjoyed seeing the dog pictures in the second floor bathroom. I'm a dog lover, currently have one, and the brown & white dog picture looks like a dog I previously had.
I love the South, have vacationed there, and the climate there would be very appealing. My sister lives in Chattanooga, Tn., and has vacationed at Hilton Head. She liked it there very much.
My compliments to the builders and designers of this home.

I truly love the innovative style of this house and wish more builders were willing to break the mold and go green. It's really hard to get builders to be creative, much less convince individuals to use recycled material. KUDOS to you!

We have been going to Hilton Head Island for many years and love the area. Some of our best memories are there.

I'm addicted to HGTV! I love all of your shows, but when I saw this beautiful home, I felt like I had just seen a dream of mine that I have had for a long time appear in front of me. I am from the south and my husband and I have 3 boys. For 15 years we have always taken a family vacation to a lake in alabama. We rent a house on the lake for a week and Our best friends and their 3 children started going with us from the very first year. It has become a family tradition for both families for the last 15 going on 16 years. We love the water. We boat on the lake and there are golf courses near by so we play golf during the week.Well, over 16 years our children have gooten older with some of them married and now having children of their own. But. we still continue to make our annulsa trip to the lake.
I always told my husband that "my dream" was to oneday own a house on the water with boating and fishing and golf all nearby ( all those things that our families love to do ). When I saw the green dream home on HGTV, I saw all the things that I have been wishing for. It has everything that I always wanted in my dream lake house.
We live in an old home that was once in my family. We are happy to have it back in our family, and I love traditions. The Green home could be my vacation home to build "our traditions" with our family and our best friends.
Our families are growing and we still love making our memories together. The Green Home would be the perfect place for us to continue making memories and traditions for years to come.
Every year the popular question is "Ms. Cille, when are we going to the lake?" It would be great to say that this year we are going to our new vacation home on the water that has everything to offer that we are used to and more!
The house is fabulous! I loved the many wonderful ideas for going green. I hope to use some of theses ideas in my own home. The decorating is wonderful. I love stuff like this. I decorated my own home.
I will enter each day and I will be watching on June 8. That is my father's birthdya. Welost him 2 years ago, and I know that it would be a dream come true for me to win on his birthday.
It's a wonderful home,a job well done. Good luck to whomever may win!

we have been vacationing on Hilton Head Ilsand for some 20 years It would be a HUGE Dream to own
this home. We were just discussing our retirement and if we could ever afford to buy property there and not have to rent my exact words were it would be a PIKE Dream. Congradulations on doing making such a wonderful home. I will be entering every day.

Goodness Carter - This home is so incredibly beautiful and thoughtfully done. I was so happy to see the solar panels and the reuse of lumber for the table out back, not to mention all the other amenities you've added. I'm speechless except to say, you definitely deserve an award for this one. Well done. Well done.

HGTV has certainly appealed to so many of us; the Green House is a Home that many of us can imagine living in and adding our little touches to make it our own. This is such a perfect place.

Every day I can fanaticize what it would be like to be living in each and every room, indoors and out. I even have an old, round Oak table that would be absolutely perfect in the dining room.

Ah well, I will continue to think about and explore "my" Dream Home as I have since it was first displayed on the HGTV site.

As an “ex” Michigander now living on the Oregon coast, I can certainly see myself living in and getting acquainted with South Carolina in general and Tradition Hilton Head in particular. I would love to be out walking around the neighborhood every morning.

Great work everyone! I am so glad to see a smaller, more livable home created. The furnishings indoors and out are simply wonderful! I can see that this will never be a lonely place to live with all of the extended family coming to visit.

Good luck to all and to me.

I'm so looking forward to inviting ALL of you bloggers to my new home! Be sure to email me for your personal invitation when you see me win on TV! There will be lots of food, hugs, and iced tea on the veranda for us all as we watch the sun on the ocean. I will bid you all a fond farewell as I close the door, and walk up the lovely stairs to my bed. (I will clean up in the morning.) What an incredibly thoughtfully and artfully crafted place the universe is sending me, in caring, loving, harmony with the earth!

Dear fellow blogers and HGTV,

Please do not get into how much you deserve to win this beautiful Green "Dream" House. Because I probably can beat most of your stories. I am a single mother of two who up until 3 years ago had a good life. I worked hard and so did my at the time husdand or so I thought. Upon my separation I had little idea what my husband made in the way of income. I discovered he made a great deal more than I thought. But he was also supporting another woman who did not work with a drug problem. He also developed a drug problem and his business went bankrupt after our separation and divorce. I lost our house because I could not make the monthly payments on my own without his income. So here I am with two children to support and an ex-husband that has abandoned his children. He does not pay child support or alimony. He quits any job when we finally find him again and get the courts to garnish his pay. Oh by the way his had another child with that woman and is currently living with her and their child. (Can we all say Jerry Springer show? LOL)

So what I am trying to say is that we all have stories that could warrant winning the house but let's not dwell on our present lives or reasons you may deserve to win but look on the positive that who ever wins this beautiul green house is indeed lucky. Everyone has the same chance to win. It is not on who is most needy or deserving.

I plan on entering every day with the hope that I may be that lucky person. We sit and dream of this peaceful place to live and call home.

Thank you HGTV.

OMG this home is amazing! I have never seen anything so beautiful before in my life! This is truly my dream home and my dream location. When my children graduate which is very soon we planned to move south anyway due to bad arthritis, and good colleges. We prefer the warmth of the south and this awesome home would be an answer to our prayers. We are in foreclosure now (long story). It is so beautiful! Thanks HGTV and Carter you are an amazing designer/craftsman I love everything you make and you look great too!

This house was meant for ME! I can only imagine my family and I as we spend our days in this beautiful home. We want to share it with others as well. The way this home was built is astounding. I will wait patiently for the day the winner is revealed. I pray it's me.

I have entered the Dream Home Giveaway for the last several years and was disappointed every year, but after having seen the Green Home I understand why I wasn't chosen any of the previous years. This home was built with me in mind. I love every detail, from the largest to the smallest. I was born in Anderson,SC and have lived in Arizona for the last 37 years. It has been my dream to retire and come back home. Well, I retired 13 months ago and have yet to realize my dream of returning to the east coast. Winning this home would truly be a dream come true for me. I have entered almost everyday and will continue to do so till the end. You folks @ HGTV have done a fabulous job for some lucky family and for the planet!

Only the HGTV and DIY Group could have completed such a wonder Green "Dream Home". All the planning shows through each element of this home inside and out.

FOR DEBORAH: I too have a similar story to yours. I am sorry for all that you have been through! I hope when your ready you will find someone as wonderful as I have. My new husband is a wonderful stepfather to my 3 children. He works very hard to support us! He loves to golf and fish. The main reason I hope to win is for him! I will be just fine where I am now because it is so much more than my children and I have ever had. I would be thrilled for you to win this home!! If you get the chance please look up Psalms 68:5; Exodus 22:22; Deuteronomy 10:18; Psalms 10:14. It will help remind you and your children that you are loved by the almighty God above who knows all!Bye for now.

I have to say that the first time that I looked at the house and took the tour, I was not impressed. However, each time I've gone back and taken the tour again, or looked at the pictures, I come away loving the house more and more. And, Carter, your table is beautiful. And, each time I find something that I had not seen before. Good luck to all who enter. I would absolutely love to have this home.

Hello Green Home Crew and HGTV bloggers,

I must say this home has to be one of my favorites of all the Dream Homes that have been built. :-) Adding the location into the equation it becomes perfection. :-) I do not subscribe to cable where I live currently, due to cost and the efficiency of the cable provider. However, I have improvised this by utilizing online services. So needless to say I watch the Dream Home progressions via the internet. My first impression of this particular home was indeed "WOW!" As I took the tour online surfing from room to room, I couldn't help but see myself cooking, entertaining or simply reading a good book while lounging on the south veranda or screened in sun room. :-) I did enter for the give-away, as I always have in the past give-aways but for some reason this particular home has captured my soul! So I just want to say to this Dream Home crew, a thousand kudos! This is a gem! Great job! Good luck to everyone! :-)

Sometimes you just have a feeling, I know I am going to win this HGTV 2008 Green Home! I am becomming more positive every day. I adore South Carolina and miss palm trees and the scent of the beach. I need a drastic change in my life and the lives of my children and grandchildren. Carter has outdone himself, as usual.

Posted by DonnaDean – April 12, 2008 1:03 PM

Green is my favorite color! South Carolina is my favorite state, Palm trees are my favorite tree, the moon is my favorite in the solar system and the beach is my favorite home away from home. Oh! Carter is my favorite handy man.........love that table you crafted and would you like to join my hubby, army reserve son, daughter, 3 grandsons and me for lunch or dinner on your table? Pure Blessing!!
This house will definitely be a blessing to whom ever wins. It's beautiful and it is located in a very special place. My family and I have vacationed in Hilton Head, SC, and we love the area. Best wishes to everyone. And to Carter, hat's off to a job well done:)

Posted by Latyshia – April 12, 2008 6:49 PM

I've loved every home you've given away. Each one surpasses the other. I love the idea of taking something used and reusing it-or reinventing it. I like to go to second hand stores and yard sales to find unique things and reinvent them. I have quirky tastes. I love the whole house, but the back yard area is spectacular. I could see myself spending too much time in those adirondack chairs and watching the water.

Home that is green
Where have you been.
So much to my Mommy it would mean,
to finally have a house that's so clean and green.

Carter: We'll have to have a meal on that beautiful masterpiece.
Linda: Let's you and I talk about my apprenticeship.

Watching you all is like seeing distant relatives.

Hopefully, I will be seeing you!

Yep, looked at the table again myself and imagined sitting out there with coffee, juices, and fresh baked goods I picked up in town on my morning walk, along with fresh fruit of course. Just waiting for the neighbors to walk by so I can invite them to have some. Oh, did I mention, it is Sunday April 13th and it is SNOWING here in Michigan where I live. OH YEAH, I'M DREAMIN'.

A job well done to each person that added their love in a special way to this beautiful home. Good luck to each person that entered to win. My husband and I enjoy watching and learning from hgtv. We have a small family business and love the morals and values of country living. We hope to visit SC soon for vacationing. Many Blessings to everyone!

Oh my. I am so in love with this home. My Fiance and I are a young couple, 21 and 36 with two children, one on the way! I saw the Green Home last weekend, and I't absolutely perfect. We were talking about moving to the Carolinas from Florida because of the seasons, the home prices, it just seems like a great place to raise out babies. Oh I'm praying every night! Thank you so much HGTV, I' going to enter everyday! I love everything about this home you've built! We need more green homes!

Posted by Jessica hudson – April 14, 2008 12:02 AM

Veronica, I hope you are entering every day like I am. If you win, maybe you will get to meet Carter!!! Good Luck!

After reading some of the blog comments, I think I've been rather selfish wanting to win the Green Home, although with our son, daughter-in-law and two gorgeous grandchildren in SC already, this would make a perfect place for them to visit. Thanks to all who contributed to the home - what a great way to get people thinking green (and I used to think my and mom so 'cheap' for constantly recycling things on the farm - looks like they were just ahead of their time)!

Just wanted to say :This is an amazing home and I look forward to dreaming the dream of being in it...Good Luck to all

Deb: I have to hand to you. You certainly get more comments in than me! I too dream of living in the GREEN HOME. I picture myself waking up in that wonderful master bedroom on a sunny morning and opening my curtains to the south veranda. I go upstairs to wake my children. It's not a school day though it's summer and we are going to eat breakfast on Carter's wonderful table outside on the north veranda. After we are done we are going to the community pool. When we get done there we will come home and watch a movie together in my daughter's cubby. After that I will go to the grocery store in my GMC yukon hybrid. When I get home I will take off my shoes and put them in the shoe holder, cook dinner in my wonderful kitchen and sit down to have dinner in my wonderful dinning room with my family. When we're done with dinner my husband and I will sit by the water's edge.He will have his glass of wine and I will have my beer(we'll recycle the bottles of course just as we do now.)P.S. Is it still snowing there? It's even chilly here today in S.C..Bye for now!

Hi everyone!!! I just can't seem to get to every blog. I just wanted to say how much I love this table. It reminds me so much of old English Pub tables and looks beautiful there. Carter, if that is what you had in mind, you certainly did a good job. [even if it was not what you had in mind, you did a good job] It fits very well there near the ocean. It gives the look of the English shore there by the firelight.I love it. Thanks again Carter, you are a very talented person.

Hi, HGTV. I have toured the house everyday since the sweepstakes began. The more I visit the green home website the more I fall in love with the home. I pray and hope that I can be lucky enough to win this beautiful home for me and my family. Great job building a beautiful and eco-friendly home.
