HGTV Green Home

A Green Community for the Green Home

Posted by kwalters – April 22, 2008 1:29 PM

Happy Earth Day! Looking for new ways to honor this big planet we call home? Why not start in your own neighborhood?

- Sign up at HGTV.com/changetheworld to volunteer for green projects in your community.
- Type in your zip code to find local green resources from the ever-growing list at ecologue.com.
- Carpool, take public transportation, bike or walk to work.
- Buy food from local farmers (your taste buds will thank you).

The Green Home is part of a planned community called Tradition Hilton Head, which is built around a town square. In addition to being a great place to watch concerts, play with your kids or hang out with your friends, a town square makes walking and biking easy, reducing our dependence on cars, which cuts gasoline use and decreases the space needed for parking.

Village Square will be anchored by the town's food market and will feature an eclectic variety of stores, cafes and restaurants; anticipated shops include a bank, microbrewery, coffee shop, pizza parlor and hair salon.

Tradition encourages homeowners to use cleaner forms of transportation by providing a golf cart with every home. And to promote a healthy lifestyle, Tradition features over 450 acres of lakes, parks and gardens, plus miles of trails for biking and walking. Golfers can play the Tradition National Golf Course, which is a member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses and is working toward being certified by the program.

Are there any Farmer's Markets in the area close to the Green Home? I helped start and have been an active member in the Kansas Grown Farmer's Market (the largest in the state) for 18 years and would be lost without a local market! My Mom and I have been selling our homemade baked goods, garden produce and, fresh eggs since we started the market and for the last 7 years we have developed a natural herbal soap and body product line that has become very popular. I guess I could always start a Farmer's Market if there isn't already one in the area!

I just watched the Green Home Special "AGAIN"! It's like one of those great movies, every time you watch it, you see something new. This is so cool. I would love to be able to ride a bike again. I have not done that in so long. Good Luck all, and don't forget, there's more on HGTV regarding going green - all day.

It would be so wonderful to live in a community that is doing good for our planet! From the picture it looks like a wonderful place to live.I hope my family gets the opportunity to live there.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that Linda always designs the children's room for boys. Not everyone has boys. How about making a neutral children's room? I don't know how she can be considered a wonderful designer when she always ignores that fact. Is it possible to get her reasons for that. Other than that, the house is wonderful. I wouldn't change anything else. Other than making it mine of course!!

OMG what a beautiful green home and how very appropriate for today!! I love the fire pit and the location in South Carolina. The only thing missing is the shrimp, crab, and keilbasa cooking on the stove top to celebrate!! Love the natural woods that you have chosen and the lovey landscape of the low country... South Carolina is just a great location. Thanks for sharing,

Good night Green Home. And to Sandra G., I would buy from you, as I prefer to shop with the little guy rather than the big guy. We don't have fresh local items here in the winter, but that's the only place I shop when it is available here. Good night all.

Hello kwalters and fellow bloggers (yes, I've been mia for a while attending a first birthday party.) In response to Sandra G's question about a farmer's market, you can go to http://www.localharvest.org/ and insert your zipcode and find them.
I just did it for the Green Home and, among the hits were: Heritage Organic Farm in Guyton, Savannah State Farmers Mkt., Beaufort Farmers Mkt., and several other farms.
If I were to win, I would like to get a paddle boat to get to the wellness center and Village Square (as well as my new neighbor's homes) and a bicycle for those that cannot be accessed by water, though walking sounds like a good mode of transportation, too. Would probably save the golf cart for the kids to take golfing (I am a hazzard all by myself) or quick trips that will require some carrying.
Still dreaming about a Green Home lifestyle...

Good Morning Green Home. Just watched a gorgeous sunrise from the front porch. I've been out walking the "greens"...looking at all my plants and just enjoying being outside after a long winter. Ok, yes, I am dreaming. But we really do get cabin fever here. Once spring gets here we are ready to open windows and get outside. Happy Wednesday to everyone, and dream big.

I've never heard of an entire community being so involved with caring for nature! Most towns are trying to do something about the environment nowadays, but not nearly enough, in my opinion. I love the idea of being able to shop for groceries, etc. using a golf cart! My husband and I live in Lynchburg, Tn., and grow many of our own vegetables, and buy more produce from local roadside stands (We know many of the farmers in the area). Good luck to everyone!

I love the the home and area. We just got back from a trip to SC and found the people and location to refreshing. Like many of you, I of course want to win this home. I love the HGTV homes and have been hooked since the second home they built in North Carolina. Best of luck to everyone - I hope a truly deserving family wins and that the house changes their lives for the better. God bless -

KWALTERS: I was wondering about the security in Tradition Hilton Head. I've noticed on the local news that there has been someone taking apart aircondition units for the copper in Hardeville. Is the area secure?

Posted by Dana Dryburgh – April 23, 2008 1:19 PM

I work for parks and recreation for our city and we are always looking for ways to stay green. We ususally are awarded the National Arbor Day Tree City USA award every year. We recycle non potable water for our parks and parkways and our fleet section is aquiring more alternative fuel vehicles every year. In our arid climate we need to conserve water greatly so we have extensive mulching, xeriscaping and cultural practices that has been in effect for the past 15yrs. I feel proud to be a part of a community which cares about the environment and can leave our future generations a legacy of a "green" earth.

I am a drafting student from Texas and I was wanting to learn from a green builder and possibly relocate to help design homes. So If you are a builder and read this shoot me a e-mail with some information. Thanks

Deb: Do you realize you are now talking to a house with your good nights and good mornings? You seem to be obsessed with two things....winning the Green Home and posting blogs. Maybe to save energy you could unplug your computer for a day. No? Well, neither could I. I admire you greatly, Deb. Just wish that when you take your palms outside for the summer, you could find some neighbors to talk to and get more involved with people in your community. You have so much to offer. You have touched my heart and I wish you the same Good Luck that I wish all sincere bloggers.
MINDY: Don't understand your comment about Linda's decorating for boys in the kid's room. I have never seen a room with sports, trains, etc. just as I have never seen a room with princesses, dolls, tiaras, etc. When my grand-daughters (ages 12 and 8) saw the video of the GH and the bunk beds, they just LOVED them. Great job, Linda. Thanks HGTV. I love you.

Just a little something I wanted to share :)
I am a native to Las Vegas Nevada. And although you some may think that Las Vegas is probably the last "green" place on earth, I am happy to say that my family and I have always been very conscious of our environment.
The other day I was driving my son to school, something that I do not normally do because he takes the bus. But this particular morning he had a project due which required him to bring some large items to school that would not fit on the bus with him. While driving, I passed a newer community under development and something caught my eye. A banner that read "go green".
I was so happy to see that a "green" state of mind was finally coming to our communities.
I also began to think about the energy used in this city to power those large hotel/casino properties. Figured that this was something that needed to be addressed and soon. As I was surfing the net I found this:
http://www.metaefficient.com/architecture-and-building/76-acre-citycenter-project-in-vegas-aims-to-be-green.html
City-Center (owned by MGM) is a 7 billion dollar project and the largest project under construction in Las Vegas today and guess what?!?! It's going green!! Not only that they are actively working towards obtaining LEED certification. It is one of the if not THE largest LEED project ever! Not too shabby for Vegas...eh?
PS- wanna save some "watt hours"? try using blackle.com as your main search engine.
thanks! :)

What a fantastic dream home. I just can't stop thinking about winning. My family and I traveled to Hilton Head, SC this past January and it was the most amazing vacation we have ever had. I love the community and especially the nice weather! I am hoping to win this wonderful home too!

Posted by Michelle G – April 23, 2008 11:38 PM

The area is so beautiful. I love learning informative news. My boss does a Hilton Head Time Share deal, now wonder! Thanks for the info. Nite, it's so late work later on today. Have a wonderful day doin the blog slot, its a nice job.

I love the whole community plan for Tradition. I wonder what the timeline for completion is? As of now, looks like the homes are few and far between. I went to the Tradition website and saw a birdseye view of the Green Home, which gives an interesting perspective. I love the feel (at least from the pictures) of the SC coast and Low Country. It is very different from Seattle--which is also beautiful. What is the humidity like? How thick are the mosquitoes? Of course--these things do not deter my desire to move to SC--It would be amazing--

Posted by Mary – April 24, 2008 1:39 AM

Are there schools close by? Wondering if this is more of a vacation community. Are there many young families with children who live around here year round?Would be nice to have my children ride their bikes with friends in the town green.

Good morning Green Home. The Carolinas are beautiful. There are mountains and the ocean, the best of both. I would love to be able to show my grandchildren what completely 'living green' is all about. They are the next generation, and it will be up to us to educate and to guarantee that they have a 'green planet' to live in. I wish everyone a wonderful day, and all good luck. Thank you again HGTV, for the opportunity to dream, the chance to enter the contest for a home like this, and for further educating us in so many areas of green living.

Posted by deb – April 24, 2008 7:27 AM

Soo beautiful!! I hope my family gets a chance to go there. Our family always wanted to live by the ocean,, but we never got a chance. Anyways, that pic of it is beautiful!

Posted by marlys – April 24, 2008 8:24 AM

I enter almost every day. I can only hope that I might win too. Winning such a beautiful house I promise to give it lots of TLC. I think if you are so lucky to win this house then why not let it forever be once in a life time a changing experience for someone. I have never been so lucky to own a house so I've definitely hopeing it will be me. Also, before marriage I was a green - so this house must have been built just for me. Anyway I'm praying and thinking positive that I WINnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!

Thanks, HGTV for the TV shows you all are First Class All the Way and Jack I did not think you would make it in 90 seconds - Good Job

Posted by Eli – April 24, 2008 11:36 AM

I've noticed a few times that others are wondering about the absence of a microwave oven in the beautiful Green Home. The research I've done indicates that they are more efficient than regular ovens. Can someone answer this mystery?

Posted by Jackie Hughes – April 24, 2008 12:01 PM

I am in love with the green house. I eat, sleep and breath it. I have been working hard to become more educated about lving green. Won't Tradition be a wonderful classroom for me and mine :) or anyone who is lucky enough to get to live there. There is nothing I would change about the house. It is greenlicious. I have already started applying for jobs in the area. Good luck to everyone and thanks to HGTV for creating such a fun way to spark others interest in living green !!!

Posted by joni – April 24, 2008 8:54 PM

Joni- Glad to know I am not the only one checking out the job situation in the area! :-)

I love this place... not just the house the WHOLE package. Not only is it the most amazing and beautiful house i have ever seen but you get to move to this wonderful area too. Such a close community.....My family is in awe of all of it!

Posted by richard and tiffany – April 25, 2008 10:25 AM

It's beautiful, just beautiful. The whole town is wonderful...wouldn't you love to be part of a community like this?????????

Posted by deb – April 25, 2008 3:34 PM

I also live in Las Vegas, and am graduating from UNLV in three weeks with an environmental studies degree. UNLV has two buildings that were recently certified LEED (one of them achieving Gold and the second one achieving Silver). The City of Las Vegas has an iniative titled "The Urban Sustainability Initiative" in which it is trying to create a sustainable city through more stringent building codes, creating alternate forms of mass transportation, and mandating that 20% of our energy comes from renewables by the year 2015. It is an exciting time to live in Las Vegas, but I would very, very much love to live in a green home (my husband and I have tried to make our existing home as green as possible but it was constructed back in 1989 so unfortunately the building materials are not very eco-friendly). HGTV has their finger on the pulse of the future and it's awesome!!

Posted by Elizabeth Barnwell – April 26, 2008 12:29 PM

Hey all, wishing you each and everyone good luck. We are down to the wire.

Posted by deb – April 27, 2008 12:46 PM

The green home is so beautiful and I love the concept of a whole green community. I hope that one day, everyone will live "green" and our children will grow up in a much more earth concious environment. Ahhh, to dream.

Posted by Laura V – April 27, 2008 4:35 PM

I've been visiting the Tradition HH web site and as I learn more about the new community, I more impressed I am that HGTV choose this area for their Dream Home.....and I now understand the "cart in every garage". This village will not only encourage green building but also will encourage healthy living by walking instead of driving. This is a beautiful retirement area and I thank you for the opportunity to learn more about Tradition.

A Farmer's Market would be wonderful! We have a farm here where you can go and pick your own veggies and pay for them by the bucket. Some of the items he grows are peas, beans, squash, okra, peppers, tomatoes. I pay $7.00 for each 5 gallon bucket. Of course I have to put in a lot of work into picking, shelling, and canning or blanching & freezing, but it is so worth it in the middle of winter when I have veggies out of the freezer that taste fresh out of the garden. The nice thing is that I'm also saving money and I'm not eating all the preservatives that are normally in store bought foods. I'm also helping the economy in my community instead of buying imported products. I even recycle the peelings and pea shells by throwing them in my truck and taking them to my Mom's neighbor for his cattle. We do grow a few of our own vegetables, but don't have the time to do a lot of gardening because we have jobs. But when we are able to retire I'll be out in the dirt growing my veggies or either digging in my flowers.

Good morning everyone. I just toured the town again. I really do encourage everyone, if you have not done so, to do it. This place is absolutely amazing. Every thing about it. The aerial photography is something to see. If you get the chance read about the plants and trees. I absolutely love it. I don't know about other states, but here in MI you can contact your local conservation office and order trees and plants from them at exceptional prices. We did that. That is where I got my butterfly house, bluebird house, bat house, butterfly bushes some black walnut trees and pines to plant. Saves you money and helps the environment. Good day to all.

Posted by deb – April 29, 2008 7:44 AM

Yes, a green community for a green home and both are absolutely gorgeous. Way to go HGTV. The links to the community and the neighborhood are great. It is going to be stunning, and so nice. It will be the way life is meant to be lived. Peaceful and secure.

Posted by deb – April 29, 2008 6:24 PM

I love this place. I have never been to Hilton Head. I've heard alot about it, and have read alot of the blogs regarding it. It sounds beautiful, but I have yet to find a spot near the ocean that isn't. The closest I got to Hilton Head was to fly into Savannah, get my rental car, drive up to Beaufort (in the rain), watch my son graduate from Parris Island, and drive back to Savannah to fly back home. Rained the entire time I was there, big rain, for two days. So, I didn't get to see much of Beaufort either. To visit Savannah has always been a dream of mine, and Charleston. I think I was born 100 years too late. I absolutely LOVE the old plantations. They are so gorgeous. The detail, the love, the respect. Then ya wonder...how'd they do that??? Ok, I'm dreamin'. Just love visiting these pages. Good luck all.

This Green Home in a green community is a wish come true for the lucky winner. Good luck all!

Posted by Barry – April 30, 2008 4:37 PM

Ya'll really need to check out the 'Tradition Hilton Head' site at the top of this page. My heart just swells thinking about this area. I subscribe to a magazine now about 'southern living' because that's where my heart is. A better way to put it, if I lived in the south, I would 'not' be susbscribing to a magazine about northern living. I have so many good friends here, and they are amazing, but they can come visit. Good day all..and good luck. Hey maybe I could talk them into retiring in 'Tradition' also.

Posted by deb – May 1, 2008 8:46 AM

I think the Green Home would be the best Mothers Day Present and to be able to call it my home.

This is the most inviting home. The warmth of it comes through the pictures and it's even more special because its green. Bravo to the Green home team again! It's lovely!

Posted by ZSINGER – May 2, 2008 5:36 PM

If any of you get the chance, tour the aerial photographs. This is such a pretty town. The landscaping alone and what it stands for is unbelievable!!!

Lets all plan to get togerther when one of the luckiest ones wins,we an save our green but just cutting out some electricity or I can, I have just turned off the air and heater to save a little/have a great day, thanks to all of you who prayed doing the storms here in AR as this has been a hectic time for all of us I am an insurance adjuster in commercial claims and boy has everyone in the state been hit hard. I need a job and the Green house in SC to make me happy.
Thanks HGTV it awesome that we all have this chance, thanks so much. Deb its great getting to blog with you bird lover Dana and all the bloggers out there. Thanks to you all. GO GREEN.

Sounds good to me southern lady. I say we all meet at the 'Green Home'. Couldn't you just imagine??? Wow, what a home. Good luck to everyone. Someone is going to be very happy soon.

Posted by deb – May 5, 2008 5:01 PM

I finally got to see the hour long special, and like Dana, I fell even more in love with the Green Home. It was fun to see some of the shops where they purchased items for the home. It was hard to tell how huge that gorgeous picture and buffet were on the tour and slide show--put seeing it on the TV really put things into perspective. WOW is all I can say. I made my mom watch the show (telling her we would be moving there--she lives with me after having a stroke) and she loved it too. I was pretty sure she would not like the idea of moving all the way to SC, but I think the show changed her mind!!
It will be sad when the blogging ends! I love reading all of your thoughts--I think the winner should start a blog and continue to send pictures of their new home and share what it is like living there.
Won't be long now!

Wow, what an idyllic community! the house is wonderful and the surrounding water looks so calming. Was just wondering though, I hear it is expensive to live in Hilton Head. Does anyone know what the property taxes might be for a house valued at $800,000?

Posted by lori greenberg – May 6, 2008 9:47 AM

Hilton Head is probably my favorite place in South Carolina. I am very glad that HGTV built a "GREEN HOME" there and are on the cutting edge of this kind of COMMUNITY project. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK HGTV!!! You're awesome!!!

I'd move there in a heartbeat if I won!!! I would love to be a part of a project like that. For now I'm doing what I can to promote "Green Homes" in the Upstate of SC.

When I first moved to SC at the end of 2005, I decided to donate a year as a Americore/Vista volunteer to Habitat for Humanity (HFH). One of the little things I did to help as the Donations Coordinator, was to established a can recycling project for them.

Habitat headquarters encourages can recycling, but there isn't always enough volunteers to keep this kind of project going. When people donate cans, they not only recycle, which helps the environment, they also help Habitat raise money to build homes for the needy!

Recently some new aquaintences of mine approached HFH in Spartanburg about starting to build their homes more "Green". And they are open to looking into it.

Also, last year I noticed that Wofford College & several other local colleges in the Upstate are making changes on campus to help promote a "Green" environment too. Students from these colleges have jumped on board and formed a group to promote "Green" communities.

Some of the home builders in the Upstate are building Green too. I toured the first "Earth Craft House" in Spartanburg a few weeks ago. It was very nicely done!

Little by little, inch by inch if we all do a little bit, it will make a great difference.

Love your show & what you're doing to make a difference in the world! Thanks for inspiring others!
