The Mystery of the Master Closet

Posted by kwalters – March 25, 2008 2:43 PM

There's a mystery unfolding on the blog: the mystery of the master closet. Does it really exist or is it the architectural equivalent of the Yeti? No need to call Mulder and Scully because I'll solve that mystery for you -- plus, I'll answer more fan favorites in this edition of the Blog Files.

Q: I don't see the master closet. Where is it?
A: This space is located in the master suite, along with the master bedroom and bathroom. We didn't include it on the 360 tour, but you can check it out on the floor plan — it's highlighted in red.

And more answers...

Q: Where's the home located? How far is it from the beach?
A: The home is located in Hardeeville, SC, about 15 miles from both Hilton Head and Savannah. The name of the community is Tradition Hilton Head. It's about 15 miles from the beautiful Hilton Head beaches.

Q: Where can I get those adorable dog paintings in the upstairs bathroom?

A: Those were painted by artist Heather Lahaise and purchased at No. Four Eleven, a shop in Savannah.

Q: How big is the house?
A: The house is approximately 2,000 sq ft.

Q: Where can I get the blue prints for the house?
A: I just talked with Jack's representative yesterday and, unfortunately, they're not for sale. I don't know if that will change in the future, but if it does, I'll be sure to post the answer here.

Q: Where can I buy the shoe holder in the entry hall?
A: This is called a Trundle Chest, and you can buy it through the Green Home's Foyer page on HGTV MarketPlace.

Tune in again Friday for more tales from the HGTV Green Home. And if you missed the TV special, don't fret! It's airing several more times in April and May. Click here for air times

I love this home - the layout, the furnishings, the architectural details. I have to ask - Will the Green Home be featured in any magazine? And if so, what issue? There are so many great ideas that it'd be nice to have them all lumped together in something I can easily carry with me to Lowe's.

Somewhere I read or heard that the house is equiped to sleep 7. Did I hear right? I only count three bedrooms: The Master (queen or king size bed?), the Kid's room (twin bunkbed), and the Guest room (double, queen or king?). Am I missing one? Or is there extra bedding somewhere else?

Posted by Tiffany Attebury – March 26, 2008 11:30 AM

I think the Green Home layout is great. I draw house plans and would like to hear more about how this house was drawn with "green" in mind. I know the long overhangs give shade to all the windows on the back. And I saw that the garage does not directly access the home's interior - was a LEED point given for that? Generally speaking, would two story homes be greener since they require less materials and take up a smaller footprint?

I saw the first airing of the show. It was good. I didn't realize it was going to be as much about the interior decorating as the structure itself. I guess since I'm a builder, I was watching it more for the green construction...

One more question: How many points did the HGTV Green Home achieve to get its Gold certification?

Nice and large, thanks for your guick response! kwalters!!!!!!

Posted by Mary – March 26, 2008 12:35 PM

Kelley, is there extra space for storage in the mech closet next to the bunk room? Is there any source of natural light in it? Thanks! -Jill

Posted by Jill – March 26, 2008 1:17 PM

Why don't you show the prices you paid for each item, that you have in the HGTV marketplace? It is discouraging when you find an item you really like and for the price it says 'price varies'. Just list what you paid for it, and that will give us an idea of the cost, knowing that it can be different at different places. It seems almost every item listed has the 'price varies' beside it. Thanks

What is the body of water in the back yard of the house. Is it a lake or what?

Posted by Celina – March 26, 2008 1:44 PM

Please, tell us about the lake...Thank you very much!

Posted by Gilah – March 26, 2008 2:25 PM

I saw a portion of the master closet in the 360 view from the bedroom, then we looked at the floorplans to see if it wasn't the bathroom... it would have been easy to miss though, if we weren't paying attention. Thank you for pointing this out!

Posted by Charlene – March 26, 2008 2:25 PM

By the kitchen & dinner room in the blue print show like 2 closets but at the show it dosen't show any closet.

Posted by Ana – March 26, 2008 2:39 PM

What is the body of water by the house. Fresh or salt, natural canal or part of communities manmade pond?

How much would the property taxes be and are there other fees related to living there?

Posted by Loa Winter – March 26, 2008 2:39 PM

While I love the design for the house I find I have a serious complaint about it.
I have a 94 year old mother who resides with us. With the majority of the population growing older I find we are not the exception any more in having an older and somewhat handicapped person sharing our home.
This house has stairs to get into it,and to get to any but the master suite once inside. This makes it difficult for her to negotiate the house at all, and makes us, as a family, have to vary from the designers ideas of room useage.
Most of the new designs I have seen used by HGTV recently have this problem. They are not handicap friendly for a multi generational family situation.
Our adult children and grandchildren would not be a problem but our aunts, cousins and even brother/sister -in -law would be.
The same problem would apply if my children won the house....where could they put Great Grandma that she could reach with a walker?

Wow! It's the perfect house. I'm already green with excitement! When do I collect my key!!!LOL

Great house! Glad Monica went with the blue for the Master bedroom - the other colors would wash out with all the white. I honeymooned on HH Island 41 years ago - my parents lived there for 30 years. It is a great place to be - right in Savannah's back yard and near the water, too! I'm glad it's not a huge house - it speaks more to the needs of American families, not their "wants" for palaces! And it lost nothing in the translation to practicality.

Posted by Honeymooner – March 26, 2008 3:26 PM

Thanks for the Q & A kwalters! I hope you can answer a few questions. We are all very curious.

Can you tell us how many finalists will be choosen? The official rules do not specify.

Will the finalists who do not win the house receive a prize? If so, can you tell us what they will receive?

I can hardly wait to see what is planned for the finalists. This is very exciting!!!

Posted by Ella – March 26, 2008 3:43 PM

To answer Tiffany Attbury - there is a pull-out sofa sleeper in the upstairs sitting area. I had that same question until I saw the 1 hour special.

Posted by Salim Khalil – March 26, 2008 4:34 PM

My back ground is or was as a carpenter, for almost twenty years until and injury happened,But never the less my hat is off to the draftsman and architects on this house, great job of use of spae NO DEAD SPACE. and the finishing touches inside. well that just HG at it's finist again.
truely my only concern about the house and land it sits on is the water way. run off and how high does the water rise during the wet months??

Posted by Lawrence Marstall – March 26, 2008 7:56 PM

I have to agree with Judy Riggenbach (March 26 2:43 PM)

Most of the designs I've seen on HGTV are for two story homes. My husband and I are only in our 50s, but both of us have arthritis and bad knees. Going up stairs all the time is very bad for our knees! With all the "boomers" in the US being our age or older, I would think that a house with 3 bedrooms (small by some standards) would keep in mind that so many Americans are either getting health problems that are contraindicated for stairs, or have quite elderly parents living with them. Please keep this in mind in future sweepstakes and in shows that feature house designs.

Conversely, the comment from "Honeymooner" (March 26 3:43 PM) indicated that the house was the perfect size. My daughter has 5 children and some of her friends have 3 or 4 children. A three bedroom house is not big enough for their families. They are all in their late 30s and will need a larger space for quite a few years. We tend to put everyone in our own category. Truth is, we may be statistically having 2.4 children, but that includes the couples with NO children and the ones with 5 or 6. If you can support them and want them, why not have 6 children or more. (Not me, I only had one which might be why my only child has 5!)

P.S. I voted for the single story floor plan every day. (Sigh) I hope I WIN THE HOUSE anyway. We'll just stay on the bottom floor and send guests up to vacuum and dust upstairs!

THE GREEN HOUSE IS BEAUTIFUL.THAT WOULD BE THE AMERICAN DREAM FOR ME AND MY MOTHER. I REUSE EVERY THING I CAN.USE A CLOSE LINE TO SAVE ON ENERGY WHEN I DO CLOSE WASHING. I ALSO DO DISHES BY HAND THAT ALSO SAVE ENERGY. SAVE RAIN WATER FOR HOUSE PLANT'S AND GARDENING. I WATCH HGTV ALL THE TIME.IAM TRYING TO GET A PLACE TO LIVE NOW. I AM A CANCER SURVIVER. I ALSO HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF MY MOTHER. I WOULD MOVE TO THE HARDEEVILLE IN A MINUTE.THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. DEENA DORSEY 1107 WEST STRATFORD DR PEORIA ILL 61614

Speaking of Bedrooms, Who still sleeps in a double bed? I wish they would design a room with a King Size bed, most every one I know sleeps in one now. The room doesn't look like it would handle a King Size bed with out taking most of the furniture out.

HGTV how about a Dream home with a BIG bed for those who have them?

Posted by Irchr – March 26, 2008 9:39 PM

I have looked and looked but have been unable to find the link for the blueprints online. Where am I missing them??

Posted by Michele Kurvink – March 26, 2008 10:03 PM

To Salim Khalil - Thank you for the information, I didn't get to see the whole 1 hour special... do you know what size the beds are in the Master Suite and the Guest Bedroom? They look like doubles but I didn't think anyone sleeps in a double anymore, well at least if there are two people sleeping in the bed.

Posted by Tiffany Attebury – March 26, 2008 10:42 PM

I find it offensive that questions that matter are not answered like-- WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE 21 OR OLDER TO ENTER THIS SWEEPSTAKES" -- I am an 18 year old US citizen and I feel I have the right to win a beautiful home in South Carolina too.

Posted by Jason S. – March 26, 2008 11:00 PM

I love this house, the furnishings, the layout and the backyard. Just perfect for me. LOL!
I was wondering if the windows have screens and if that is a man-made pond at the back of the house.

One thing that I have learned about a "Green House" is creativity. We can let our imagination run wild in Flee Markets or where ever else; to reuse items. It is great.
Look what thet did with the closest... pretty neat idea. These people are very creative; in more ways then one.

Posted by romagrace – March 27, 2008 12:45 AM

In respose to Loa Winter questions. I too was wondering if property taxes was high there?

Also I notice on Tradition Hillton Head website that it appears to be a gated community, Does that mean there where be a Home owners Association fee to pay Monthly?

Not that I wouldn't love to win the beautifull home and live there myself!

I cannot believe this home!! I actually put comments on the blog for the dream home, because I (duh) didn't see the blog here, I was too busy looking and admiring the home. And everyone is right, this home is beautiful, but the best thing is the eco friendly "everything" about it. I have been eco friendlying (a word???) forever. And I think what I like the most are the recycle bins, the water collection system, and the solar. I watched the special (on Easter, ignoring my family-ha) and sat there with my jaw dropped. ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. HGTV and their design team thought of everything. What a wonderful place Tradition would be to retire. I AM READY. I have never been to Savannah, and it has always been a dream of mine to go there. I have been to Beaufort, S.C., but only to Parris Island USMC Base to watch my son graduate from boot camp. But,on my visit there, it rained so hard for two days, they had to move the ceremonies inside. Needless to say, I didnt do any sightseeing, but I have been to the S.C. coast, when my son was stationed in Camp LeJeune, N.C., it is beautiful, but anywhere near the ocean is. When I saw the shoe thingy...I said "whoa...that is me". My shoes are off the minute I walk in the door....house slippers are sitting right there. So, I guess I have made up for my lost days of blogging on here, but let me tell you, I won't again. THANK YOU HGTV. IT IS SO FUN TO DREAM. And to anyone who didnt get to watch the special, you can walk to everything. Oh, and the pic of the dog with the one brown eye, Jack Russel, looks just like mine, but I have a runt, and only 12lbs. And such a good girl. OK, I'll stop. GOOD LUCK TO ALL

The house is great! For those worried how this particular house will match their lifestyle, if they win it could be sold & they'll still be ahead.

Posted by Nan – March 27, 2008 10:47 AM

My comments echo some of those ahead of me. The house is lovely, but not handicapped friendly. We are now an aging population and as my husband and I plan for retirement we are hoping to build a house to serve us into our 90's. This house has a steep staircase to all the guest rooms. We already have handicapped siblings who visit.

I'd like the house designers consider elevators to accommodate all levels of need. I, for one, would love to see an HGTV dream home or green home address universal design, wide passage doors and corridors for wheelchairs and walkers, higher counter tops to eliminate bending, perhaps stacking washer/dryers on each floor, twin beds in guest rooms, light switches accessible from wheelchairs, exterior stair treads wide enough for a wheelchair and someone pushing it, all showers with sloping pans and no lip to trip over.

How may Bedrooms and Bathrooms Does the Green
House have? Does it have a back patio or screened
in back porch.

This is MY DREAM HOUSE! I love the area,
the lake view, the interior design of the home, and most of all that it's GREEN!
I do have a couple of questions, how much property is the home on?(I think I missed that) I have 2 children, is there room for a swing set in the yard?
*Most important when can I move in???? :)

Posted by Cari – March 27, 2008 11:34 AM

I had fun watching the HGTV " GREEN" HOME special, I did not see the Master bedroom closet, but after reading the Blog I was right! I thought it would have to be in that space, I looked very hard at the on line tour, and thought it would have to be it that spot. It is going to be a GREAT MASTER CLOSET! for one very happy person to enjoy! Best wishes to all.

Posted by michele – March 27, 2008 11:59 AM

This home is wonderfully green and much appreciation on smart space planning. What a great carbon foot print!! This home would be great for many families and if many would try to live in smaller homes with great use of space, we would find those things we really do not need. Quality over quantity and reuse of many items. I drive a hybrid now and it is awesome not to have to go to the gas station so often. Good Luck to all !! As, HGTV always gives away such wonderful homes with plenty of extras.

To Michele Kurvink - you can see the blueprints on the Tour tab on the Green Home main page.

Their are so many thing to love about the green house the roof and the beautiful flooring that glow. the linen on the sofa and that it is a green house.

Posted by bennett – March 27, 2008 1:16 PM

Has anybody gotten an answer to the question about what body of water is behind the house. When I saw the show it looked like there might be an outlet to the coast, but when I took the on-line tour it looks more like a man made canal or lake? The house is lovely, and I would love to find myself sitting on any of the decks watching the southern seasons change.

Posted by Sue T. – March 27, 2008 1:18 PM

This is a beautiful home~green is the way to go, in my opinion. Oh, to be so lucky to win this home!

Posted by Mrs. Lucas – March 27, 2008 1:27 PM

On the blueprints to the left of the cubby and what looks to be a closet there is a large space with three windows and it is above the living room.... I don't see any kind of entrance so what is it?? It would have the best view in the entire house if it were accessible.

Posted by Tiffany Attebury – March 27, 2008 1:28 PM

I too love the shoe chest, so I followed the links to find it is "For the Trade Only." That means (I think) the only way we can buy it is through a decorator/designer. Bummer!

So many have complained about the reaction of the dream home winner that I just must speak up in her defense. Lighten up, folks! Not everyone screams and jumps up and down and takes the Lord's name in vain when they are excited. She may have been reared in a home where quiet was desired. She may be (or have been) the victim of abuse, in which she has learned that the expression of any joy will invite horrible retribution, as the abuser definitely does NOT want the victim to be happy and will end THAT in a hurry! So her tears may have been the only way she was able to exhibit her happiness. Show her compassion and rejoice with her in her good fortune and please don't condemn her.

Posted by Connie – March 27, 2008 1:47 PM

Living on any body of water in the southeast requires that you have a screen-in porch because of all the nasty insects. Western areas have no problem at all outdoors, but the southeast is a completely different bug-infested area! The next house design should have a screened porch/patio.

Laws of Karma: Things you say and think count.

So just think and say only good things so karma will not get you. (to the people saying and thinking bad things about last winner)

If you do not have a job how are you going to pay the taxes if you win? oh you could sell it but that may take more time than you have to pay the taxes with the housing market the way it is now.

If you have another home you could sell it to use to pay taxes, but again housing market not that good at this time.

You can take out a mortgage on the $250,000.00+ taxes, but if you do not have a job or on a limited income can you make the payments + the insurance + the yearly taxes + the utilities + home owners dues?

HGTV also said in rules: Main Sponsor reserves the right to conduct a background check on any potential Grand Prize Winner and reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any person based on such background check if Main Sponsor determines in its sole discretion that awarding the prize to such potential Grand Prize Winner might reflect negatively on Main Sponsor or any of the Participating Product Sponsors.

So does this mean if you have been in trouble with the law or live on a limited income, you can not win it?

Just a few things to think about and not to get your hopes up.

I have been entering the HGTV dream home sense 1997 praying and believing each year was my year to win. Never happen. Maybe the green home is the one for me to win! I just can't seem to give up hope that my time is coming and is here! This gives me something to look forward to each year and everyday of the contest. looking at the pictures and dreaming of being in the home and waking up to the view of each of the homes, willing it to be mine! Every time I do not win, I just say well just wasn't my time, maybe next time. But I do not get all crazy mad cause I didn't win and break down crying mad and accuse anyone for it being their fault I didn't win. No I just start over again each year with the hope of being the winner! So please everyone just remember this is like winning the lotto would be just a chance in a blue moon, and how many of us have seem a blue moon?

Thank you HGTV for giving me a chance to dream!

May God bless each and everyone of you and all your dreams come true!

If I enter once a day by e-mail as required, or by mail sending to address, is both really needed to enter by ?? For I've only e-mailed and entered once a day since I began.

Did'nt the FL Key's Winner enter by e-mail and won ??

I just love this house! It's perfect for me and my family :) Hey.. a girl can dream can't she? I have two black labs and when I saw the paintings in the bathroom I just about fell over, those are MY DOGS!!! I also love all of the little "nooks" and sitting areas, I can see myself reading stories to our 2year old and teaching him how to swim out back. Amazing...

Also.. we have made our house more "green" just this past year and we LOVE it. We installed a tankless water-heater and have new double-paned windows... our air conditioning bill was 1/2 of what it was before the new windows!

I hope I win and my family can be "green forever" and our friends will be green with envy! :)

There's no office for my husband, and no place to put a sewing room for me. I think the bunks would have to go for at least one of those things. If the garage is air conditioned, that back bump-out could be used...

I do love the screened porch. Yes, you avoid the bugs, and my Siamese cats could enjoy the breezes.

Question:
How big is the Green Home lot? What sizes do the lots range in the community? Thanks

Posted by Mark – March 28, 2008 12:40 AM

I absolutely love the HGTV Green Home for what I think it is - a practical, non-extravagant, environmentally-friendly residential dwelling. I have read many comments critizing the Green Home for not having certain features, such as a game room and what I perceived to be a preference for a dedicated library room. As this year's HGTV Green Home" has shown, a truly "green home" would not necessarily possess these such features as a library room lined with books and towering wooden shelves due to the fact that it would convey a message of waste, not conservation. I applaud to all those who have participated in the making of the HGTV Green Home and/or in the organization of this contest as this is an effort to show the world how ordinary people can create a sustainable and comfortable home.
On a side note, I have several concerns regarding entry into this year's HGTV Green Home contest. I realize that entrants can enter everyday during the contest period, but when exactly do each of those days end? What time and time zone would that be? I realize that if a person enters between 9PM and 12PM in the Pacific Time Zone that night, that entry could be considered the following day's entry if the time is based on the Eastern Standard Time and would result in a missed opportunity if one can only enter into the contest once a day. If there is no set time for each day, does this mean that an entrant who missed a day can enter twice or more per day during the following days to make-up for missed opportunities? Would this disqualify the entrant? This is assuming that the total number of entries during the contest timeframe does not exceed the total number of possible entries for the whole contest timeframe.
Also, would using "cookies" to fill out the form be considered a form of automatic entering that can disqualify the entrant?

Ok, there are 2 debs on here. Hi Deb! One with capital D...in answer to her question, I believe you can find the information on the stores on some of the links. Now, another thing I ABSOLUTELY LOVED in the tv special, was the bedding. I love all cotton anything. My opinion on some of the blogs....1) I don't believe anyone who has the intention of selling this home should consider such. My gosh, why on earth wouldn't you just want to live in it...why sell it???? (just my opinion) I would hope there is a clause stating the winner must live in it for a while at least. And, I back HGTV 100% on doing a background check to verify someone could afford the home. Why should someone be chosen who could not afford the home....kind of defeats a purpose. 2) There is a screened porch...and 3) the video tour will show practically everything in, out and around the home. Oh, and the neighborhood is adorable...you can see some of the other homes, and it is walking distance to everything in Tradition. WOW...what a tradition that would/could set..GOOD JOB HGTV. deb with small d...

Can't stop. I just took the tour again. There are 3 palm trees by the drive. When my father passed 4yrs ago, I dug up some roses from his home in Florida, and brought them back to Michigan. In the sand/dirt with the roses were palm tree seeds. He had planted the roses under palm trees. I replanted the roses here in Michigan, and a couple of years later I noticed something growing in the pot of sand/dirt that I had brought the roses back in. Long story short, I have 6 (yes six) palm trees now growing inside my house, (can't plant them outside in Michigan). It is my understanding that it is very hard to grow a palm tree from seed, I wasn't trying to...thanks dad. I have a small jungle in my house, and all my plants are beautiful. Most tropical. I love tropical, and plants are so good for the home and the environment. Thanks HGTV and keep up the GOOD work....Love it.

I would like to echo some of the previous comments about accessibility, or the lack thereof, in the "dream" homes. As an independent and active wheelchair user searching for a first home it is disappointing to see the lack of options, indeed lack of consideration and representation, both in the media and in the market, of any genuine movement towards or realization of universal design. With all due respect to the American suburb vernacular, I am nowhere near ready to retire into a rudely ramped rancher or claustrophobic Cape Cod that considers my needs as an afterthought or an imposition. I believe that many wheelchair users and other mobility challenged persons are quite realistic, indeed already accept many compromises in their public and profession engagement with the world- our homes should be places we can settle in, not settle for. In time, universal design will indeed become part of the larger social consciousness, much like the green movement has experienced an increase in understanding and application, but shifts happen faster through increased visibility. A few years ago a "handicapped accessible" apartment complex opened in a major American city and a remark was made, to the effect, "I did not realize there were disabled people in the area." We are in "the area", but, unfortunately, only in those places where we can live, which is not necessarily the same as where we might prefer or choose to live. Disability is still one of those taboo areas that either has to be celebrated as inspiration, sympathized with as life interrupted, or ignored/avoided as uncomfortable reminder about life's unpredictability. However, most of us who fit into the category of otherwise abled merely seek the "ordinary", enjoy similar social engagements with friends and family, aspire to home ownership and backyard gardening, and do not relish the "handicapped house" label. Universal design is truly that- universal; it benefits both the disabled and able bodied. From ramps and automatic doors that assist the heavily bagged shopper and stroller mom, to elevated sinks and temperature controlled water that reduce strain and risk of scalding, universal design elements can improve all our lives, not just those of the custom needs homeowner. I enjoy and appreciate the wealth of home improvement and design idea shows that have become commonplace recently- but I continue to be struck by the presumption that everyone can enjoy those newly created spaces. The "oh, it's just one step in/out" or, "look- it has handicapped bars" are not suggestive of truly accommodative, inclusive, even particularly creative spaces. Be it a public plaza, a city street, a garden, a family room, truly remarkable spaces/places are ones that synch with and move your spirit. Recent trends in television programming have heightened our collective understanding of that "sense of place", encouraged us all to aspire, sometimes unrealistically, for experiences and surroundings that restore and inspire us. Ultimately, however, it is not the quality or configuration of materials that moves us but how we and those we love experience and use them. A universal design home need not look like it was outfitted by a medical supply store and its occupants should not feel contained by the "one way in, one way out" or "come sit by the window and watch us have fun outside" afterthought approach. HGTV and its sponsors could do a lot to increase collective understanding about universal design, without coming across as patronizing or othering. Personally, I think it would be nice (and marketable, and economically/corporately viable) to see a green dream home that everyone, regardless of ability, can appreciate, be inspired by, and picture themselves living in- an extraordinary home in which to live an ordinary life.

When I first saw the floor plan, I wondered how the stairs in front of the window would be handled. Couldn't you have made the landing at the windows and turn the stairs? It seems odd to have stairs directly in front of the windows.
Other than that, I love the flow of the house. The kitchen is FANTASTIC! I appreciate the size and location of the laundry room. A "woman thing". Tired of seeing floor plans with huge foyers, five bedrooms and the washer dryer jammed into a hallway or corner.

Great job Guys!

Hilton Head is a very nice place to live in ... My family always takes trips there and it would be very nice to know that someone who needs that house gets it. I think it is dumb to say all of the bad comments that some have posted. Next years green home should be on a lake. (just wanted to say)

Posted by Stephanie – March 28, 2008 11:12 AM

The overall house is great but I would have thought that a "true" green house would be using solar panels for energy. Oil is one of the biggest problems we are facing these days and I think that would have really made a difference.

Mark - Tradition Hilton Head has asked us to forward all questions about the lot and community (including fees) to their Sales Center, so they can handle them personally. Here's their number: 843-208-5333

Rikki T - The home has solar panels on the south side, which provide 10% of its electricity. You can see them in the tours of the South Veranda and the Water View.

I just love this house, and would love to call it home! My boyfriend and I want to eventually settle in the south, and Sean suffers terribly from arthritis, and has CP. He'd love to get out of snow country. Then I seen the sweepstakes for this house offered, I called Sean up and said make sure you enter too! He lived close to there when he was a boy and his father was in the Marines. I said wouldn't it be KARMA if we were lucky enough to win. Now I'll call Sean everyday to enter the sweepstakes. I'd love to call it our home!

I am not the Mark who asked about the lot sizes (on March 28,2008. 12:40AM).

Thanks.

HGTV WOW You did it again. This house is sooo beautiful and sooo cool. I sure hope someone that wins this will be a whole whole lot more happier and excited and appreciative than the girl who won the dream home....... LIKE MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!! We have family in Hilton Head so we are really excited and dreaming a lot.

Who goofed the design with the stairs going right through the front window? It's not quaint or traditional or whatever you want to label it, it's a flub. "Approximately 2000 sq ft" is definitely on the high side. These "dream homes" are really cramped. Not my dream. Adding a few more feet would have helped solve the stair/window problem, too. I can't wait to read about the winner's foot going through the front window someday. How did that pass inspection? HGTV did a pretty good job hiding that in most photos, but here's a good shot of it: http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/green_home_2008/article/0,3183,HGTV_30916_5814136_08,00.html

And, someone forgot to build-in the built-ins in the Master Bedroom and Dining Room that are shown in the diagram at the top of this page. Reclaim some boards and get them installed. The Master Bedroom could really use it. Is that a twin- or full-size bed in the Master? How dreamy!

Selling new homes...everyone tends to focus on the larger closet spaces. The sales trend has been to set apart new construction from older homes by focusing on the improved storage, higher ceilings and all the very things that make a home less energy efficient. I do not believe you have to be a senior to downsize. Does the closet space really matter?

Posted by Angie – March 29, 2008 10:30 AM

Ladies & Gentelmen,
I have read all the comments about what "You Think" HGTV should have included in this Green Home and I wonder; Do we all wear the same dress/pant size? No. Do we all have the same circumstances/life styles/wants/needs? No. So, how can we expect one Green Home to meet the circumstances/life styles/wants and needs of so many?
Knowing how Jack seeks out great locations and floor plans & how Linda so wonderfully furnishes the homes, Given Time, the home best suited to "You" will be/is in the plans if you are patient.
I have never entered before because the home was not "Right" for me. Not that they weren't great homes or locations but it "didn't FIT" my specfic needs.
Shouldn't we all be greatfull to HGTV that the opportunity to have a Dream/Green home is given to us by them? Shouldn't we "Build" them up (no pun intended) not tear them down?
Make your needs known to them, they want to know But, Please do it in a pleasant, constructive and informative way.
YES, THIS HOME "FITS" ME. I HAVE COPD.
Best wishes to all entrants.

I actually had a question. What is that space on the floor plan where the door opens from the cubby? Is it a closet or a balcony. Thanks. P.S. I absolutely looooove this home!

Wow, what a house. I would love to see it in person. Looks cozy and relaxing.

Posted by Todd – March 29, 2008 4:42 PM

I'm quoting here: double bed too small, should be king size. Well, what about a queen size bed? Should be big enough, unless there are two very large people, or two who aren't talking to each other. Kelly, please tell us, what is the size of the bed in the Master Bedroom?
deb(SMALL D): Loved your story about the palm tree seeds growing from the transplanted rose bushes. I live in Michigan too, and would love to have that "jungle" growing in my home. BUT I don't agree about your take on the back ground check. That's not what it's for. And no HGTV winner "must" do anything.
Wonderful post from JerryW. Now I understand Universal Design. Thanks. The GREEN HOME is beautiful. Pleasant dreams and good luck to all.

I think this house is beautiful and anyone who wins it will be lucky. How nice to know that you are living in a home that is environmentally friendly. My kids are starting to ask where all the trash goes, the world gets dirtier and dirtier and it is nice to think we are starting to think greener for them.

Thank You.

My Gosh I have never heard so much belly achin in my life for such a nice house. If you can't use it don't enter. Simple as that. I have wached for several years now and I have seen some beautiful homes, however they were too far away from home. So I did not enter. Now this one if perfect for my family to use as a summer home. We live an hour a way and manage a family owned timber plantation. they are here 6 months a year and I would spend May-Sept in HH and still be able to come home and take care of my 8 dogs and 6 horses because none of them are coming to that nice new house. It would just be perfect for the quality family time the four of us could have. we live where we work and are always busy, However we love what we do and are very thankfull to the family we work for but would love to have a "GET AWAY" with no animals. Don't worry I do love my animals, but I told my 8 and 9 year old the only dogs in that house are the ones on the bathroom walls. If you can't use the house and you would sell it, please don't waste the time of the hard work that was put into it by hgtv and staff for making it special for the person who would really enjoy it and take care of it for many years. I know it is free speach but do you ever remember the saying " If you can't say something nice then don't say it at all" Good luck to all!

This home is our family's dream home insofar as enivornmentally friendly along with location. We have lots of relatives in the area who love living there and we visit as often as possible. We plan on moving to the area when our son graduates high school which will be this July. We're as green a family as we can be in our present home and are looking forward to a new lifestyle in a warm climate. This home would be perfect. Whoever the family is that wins will be very blessed.

I'm a strong believer that we need to stop abusing the Earth and taking advantage of Mother nature.

The house is perfect...........at least for me! More than what I imagined it would be. I would love to move there. My best friend of more than 45 years recently moved away, she and her husband live in South Carolina now, very close to Hilton Head. I really miss her. I would love to retire there and have my 2 daughters and 2 grandchildren come and vacation there with me. All the cost efficient/energy saving ideas that were put into the construction of this beautiful home add to its' perfection. I can only imagine the every day experience of the great views from all the windows and doors, and beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

this looks like a great house! seems a bit disappointing that only 10% of the power comes from solar though, could they not have installed more panels? i didn't watch the special, but am going to try to find it for sure! good luck everyone!

Well I'VE JUST FINISHED READING ALL THE BLOGS AS OF TODAY 3/31.IT IS A BEAUTIFUL HOUSE AND I'M SURE IT WILL MAKE A NICE HOME FOR SOME LUCKY VIEWER MAYBE EVEN ME!I CAN UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE COMMENTS REGARDING UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR MULTIGENERATIONAL AND/OR HANDICAP ACCESSABLE HOUSING.I HAVE DEALT WITH ONE OR BOTH IN MY LIFE IN THESE PAST 55 YEARS AND WILL PROBABLY DO SO AGAIN IN THE FUTURE.I WOULD CHALLENGE YOU GOOD FOLKS AT HGTV TO COME UP WITH A HOME THAT IS ALL THREE,GREEN,MULTIGENERATIONAL AND HANDICAP FRIENDLY AS THAT IS WHERE A GREAT PART OF AMERICA IS GOING THESE DAYS AND IT'S VERY SHORTSIGHTED OF THE HOUSING PEOPLE THAT THEY DO NOT SEE THIS OR MAYBE THEY ARE JUST EXTREMELY SHORT SIGHTED.I MYSELF WOULD LIKE TO SEE SOMETHING IN A HOME THAT HAS A CENTRAL KITCHEN AND LIVING SPACE OPEN TO EACH OTHER CENTRALLY LOCATED WITH AT LEAST 2 DOWNSTAIRS BEDROOMS AND BATHS ,AND A SMALLER LIVING ROOM AREA AND 2 BEDROOMS WITH A BATH ,ABOVE.AS FOR BEDSIZE THE WHOLE WORLD DOES NOT OWN A KING SIZE BED.I TOLD MY HUSBAND A LONG TIME AGO THAT IF WE NEEDED THAT MUCH SPACE, HE COULD HAVE HIS VERY OWN SINGLE BED ,CAUSE IF I COULDN'T REACH OUT AND TOUCH HIM HE MIGHT AS WELL BE IN A SEPARATE BED AND A SEPARATE ROOM FOR THAT MATTER! GOOD LUCK TO ALL AND YES IT IS NICE TO DREAM.

Posted by Candy – March 31, 2008 7:43 AM

I can not believe how nit picky some of you are! I dont care if the house is 2000 sq ft or 1000 it is better than what I have and I would know that I had died and gone to heaven if God and HGTV would pick my family and I to win it. I guess your mothers didn't teach you to be greatfull. Obviosly none of you need the house but there are those of us out there who could really appreciate the home and the time and effort that was put in to it. Those of us who work everyday of our lives and still can't seem to keep our heads above water. Those are the people who deserve to win the home not people who care if it has built-ins or what size the beds are.

Posted by Lori – March 31, 2008 1:26 PM

About the closet!! I guess I'm good cause I knew that the door across from the master bedroom was the closet there was no other place it could be. And I just thought that since it had it's own door it mist be a BIG ONE. I love this house I loooook at it everyday. I find something new in it every time I do. This time I saw the sun set in one of the photos how gorgeous is that. I hope i'll be the one sitting there by the fire lokking at the sun set.

I absolutely love this home, the concept, the opportunites to conserve energy, the house, everything! South Carolina is an amazing location, Tradition is incredible, my mother-in-law lives in Tradition here in Port St. Lucie, FL, and she loves it! I'm so excited about this house, I'm entering everyday! Great job HGTV!

Posted by Shannon – April 1, 2008 8:43 AM

I agree with Lori,

When you are not as fortunate as others, you really appreciate things with great gratitude. Who cares about what size bed was used in the master bedroom- it is a bed never the less! HGTV, this home is remarkable! I pray for my family- hoping for that chance to be the ONE(s) who is chosen to win this home. It would be a great surprise to the kids, they would be so infatuated with such a gorgeous home. You all did an absolute AWESOME job!

Posted by Teresa – April 1, 2008 1:37 PM

I think that the people that want to complain about the house should just not enter and give people who really love and would be grateful to own this house and won't sell it off a chance to win it.

Posted by Courtney Scherer – April 2, 2008 1:57 AM

I like everything except for the master bathroom sink cabinet, the second floor bathroom is better. I think the cabinets with the fabric on front look silly and out of date. The bathroom is a messy place and needs hard surfaces that can be easily cleaned and wiped down. Everything else is well thought out. I'm trying to build a green home at this time, very difficult, the contractors and my husband are giving me a hard time.

Posted by Karen Barclay – April 2, 2008 9:21 AM

I just wanted to say that this house is beautiful and though I think so, not all people might. Therefore, if you don't like the layout,size,style,color......etc. then DON'T enter to win it. It's that simple. That is one of the reasons they let you tour it online. Also, I do agree with the opinions about there only being 3 bedrooms in most or all of the houses, and the lack of handicap accessibilities for some families. However, like I stated before if it wouldn't work for your family please don't enter just to win something. Some other family might really be able to use this wonderful home.

Posted by Gina G. – April 2, 2008 11:30 AM

I was impressed that the Green Home is a sensible size with a floor plan that allows maximum use of the common areas. A huge part of being "green" is to start thinking in smaller terms in everything--houses, cars, closets, and meal portions! Americans use infinitely more than our share of the earth's resources. The rest of the world doesn't live like we do. It is time that the media and the government get back to promoting conservation and living within our means. The housing market, sub-prime debacle, and the slumping economy are all symptoms of the "super-size-me" mentality of Americans.

Beautiful home, however I do have some design questions.

Question 1:
I dont see a desk area of any kind in the layout. Not for children or adults. Where would one use their computer to work from home or pay bills? Where would children do their homework?

Question 2:
Why is their a fabric skirt around the master bath vanity instead of actualy cabinetry? How would you sort your toiletries, make-up, linens, trash and cleaning products?

Question 3:
Why did they decide to leave the refrigerator free standing? It looks a litle unfinished or like it is a mistake.

Question 4:
I dont see a storage room of any kind. Since their isnt a basement where would you store holiday decorations, etc..

Regardless whomever wins will be very lucky to receive this beautiful home.
Thank You

Posted by Dorothy Portuondo – April 4, 2008 10:46 AM

I think it's a great house and I agree with everyone when they say if you don't want it, don't enter to win it. It's about time that HGTV built a house that didn't have all these extra rooms and finally built a house that a normal family could live in without bursting the budget, or having to to sell it just for the taxes alone. If you don't like the furniture, change it. No one says you have to keep everything the same. Use some common sense.

Well, We finally see the Master Closet but...
My husband and I just adopted 3 beautiful girls (sisters) and they want to know about "their" closets upstairs. I'm praying we win this home because I don't know how I'll brake it to the girls if we don't move in. They are already claiming their spaces and sleeping places!!!
I've been teaching the girls about green-living and recycling. This is new to us, so we are beginners. If you know of any kid-friendly sites on this subject, please let us know.
Oh, and don't forget about the upstairs closets.
Thanks from four Carolina Girls looking to move!

Beautiful house! I love the use of outdoor space. My family enjoys spending time outdoors and the landscaping really takes advantage of all the space and would invite outdoor entertaining. Because we have an irrigation system I appreciate the innovative irrigation system used with this Green Home. I am unfamiliar with the weather in NC and do not recall seeing info on the heating and cooling systems - was a heat pump considered to function as a source of heat yet cool the home in the summer too? One would thing it would be easy to install a ground-source heat pump since trenches were already dug for the rain water collection/irrigation system. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

DREAM home is right! HGTV rocks again! I can't imagine the fun you had putting this one together and the joy you'll have in giving it away! Now about those alligators. . . . (Oh well, I'd rather swim in the Atlantic anyway!)
Great job! Can't wait to WIN!

Hi,
I saw the HGTV home and I entered to win. My dream, (and yes, it is fun to dream) is to sell the house to an avid golfer and ocean lover... someone who can appreciate the slower cadence and hospitality of the south.
I currently live in MA, and couldn't afford the property taxes if I wanted to, but I could sell the house for a profit and finally take my life to another level.
That's my dream. ;-)
Every one of us has a reason why we think we should win the house. I wish us ALL luck. And to whomever wins it, celebrate liberally and enjoy the luck!! Because it's a beautiful thing when something happens that changes your life forever in a postive way.

I can see where some people with disabilities would have extreme difficulty navigating the home. Perhaps that's something HGTV can do in the future, but I love this home. It is very cozy and appealing. I love the way there are decks or balconies built onto the house. The appliances are superb and the house is overall very charming and warm. It has a huge back yard and plenty of space to build a pool some day if that's allowed. I would feel priviledged to own a home like that. I've always loved the water. We rent right now and it's not looking too promising for home ownership unless we win something. It would be a home where my mom and dad could retire and that we could share. There's plenty of room to build on in the future. Overall, there are a lot of possibilities. Good luck to everyone and thanks HGTV for having these home giveaways.

I started reading some of the blogs on this page, and just had to stop. How much does one need? Basics, let's get back to basics. So many people are complaining, (ie: bed not big enough). I personally thank GOD for a bed to lay on. HGTV has gone over and above on this home, and they are giving it away, and you want to complain about it? Guess I was raised different. Whats that saying? "Don't look a gift house (or is it horse), in the mouth"?????? Good luck to all those who would really really appreciate what HGTV has done here.

The one thing I have notice is the lamps they are pick for each room so special.

A spectacular home! HGTV and all of the builders and designers did an incredible job... cudos to you all!
It would be an honor and blessing to win and settle "home" here, in my favorite coastal area ever! It has been my vacation spot of choice for more than 20 years.
I am starting to collect moving boxes already!

I love the house!!! Me and my husband have been talking about move somewhere nice to raise our twin boys. It is our dream home, we fell in love with Hilton Head when we went there on our honeymoon almost three years ago.The house is only two hours drive from where I live. I believe that if you have any problems with this home then you should keep your opinion to yourself no one is making you live there. I hope that whoever wins know what they really have.I have been trying to do all that I can to cut down on waste and to become a little more green I hope that you will do the same.

HI HGTV:

I JUST LOVE THIS “GREEN” HOME. I LIVE IN MYRTLE BEACH, S.C., BUT I LOVE HILTON HEAD, HARDEEVILE AND BLUFFTON. I HAVE BEEN WATCHING HGTV FOR SUCH A LONG TIME. I HAVEN’T ALWAYS ENTERED ALL OF THE HOME GIVEAWAYS BECAUSE I FELT THAT THEY WEREN’T RIGHT FOR ME AND MY FAMILY AT THE TIME – MAYBE BECAUSE THEY WERE TO FAR AWAY OR SOME OTHER REASON, BUT THIS GREEN HOME IS HONESTLY PERFECT FOR MY FAMILY. I HAVE BEEN ENTERING FOR THIS “GREEN” HOUSE MOST OF THE DAYS SINCE IT IS PERFECT IN EVERY WAY FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. I TOLD MY HUSBAND THAT ALL OF THE OTHER HOMES WERE BEAUTIFUL AND I WANTED TO WIN- BUT WAS GLAD THAT WE DIDN’T BECAUSE I FEEL THAT THIS IS A MORE PERFECT HOME FOR A CONSERVATIONIST. MY HUSBAND LAUGH AT ME EARLY THIS YEAR WHEN YOU WERE GIVING THE FLORIDA HOME AWAY BECAUSE I KEPT LOOKING OUTSIDE AND AROUND THE CORNER TO SEE IF YOU WERE COMING TO MY HOUSE. THIS YEAR I’M ACTUALLY HOPING AND PRAYING FOR THIS HOUSE. I HONESTLY PICTURED ME AND MY FAMILY IN THIS HOUSE EVERY NIGHT BEFORE I GO TO BED. I WOULD LOVE TO MAKE THIS MY HOME. I actually work with a soil & water conservation agency for the past 17 years. THIS HOME IS PERFECT. I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT. I LOVE TAKING THE 360 TOUR ALL OF THE TIME. I ACTUALLY GREW POOR AND I WAS RAISED TO BE A PRACTICAL, NON-WASTEFUL PERSON. WE raised our own chickens, hogs, and turkeys. We grew our own food. I love planting vegetables and watching them grow and then later enjoying them knowing that you grew them. Of course I do gather rain water to water the plants. I am definitely a conservative person. I AM ALWAYS DOING MY PART TO CONSERVE WATER AND OUR NATURAL RESOURCES. I EVEN GOT MY WHOLE OFFICE TO SIGN WATER PLEDGES 2 WEEKS AGO. I WOULD ALSO LOVE TO WIN THE HYBRID, I WOULD GIVE THAT TO MY DAUGHTER. SHE GOES TO USC IN COLUMBIA AND THE WAY THE GAS PRICES ARE –IT WOULD BE PERFECT FOR HER DRIVING FROM COLUMBIA TO MYRTLE BEACH ON THE WEEKENDS TO COME HOME. I WILL BE HOPING AND PRAYING THAT ME AND MY FAMILY WILL WIN THIS HOME, BUT I HAVE TO ALSO WISH EVERYONE ELSE GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WILL BE WAITING FOR THE KNOCK ON MY DOOR.
GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS EVERYONE.

This house is a dream. I definately could see my husband and I living here. But alas, it will never happen. I am not that lucky. But, this is what dreams are all about. What more could anyone want, besides family and friends!!!!! HGTV is my favorite channel to watch. My hubby says to me " isnt there something else on TV"... Ha Ha. Carter really loves what he does and you can see that in what ever he touches.
Keep up the great work and HGTV keep up with going green

Pat Palmieri: If I believed in luck I would have to believe I had none so It's a good thing for me that I don't believe in luck! There is a chance YOU COULD WIN! Don't give up! I watch HGTV all the time too! My husband is a carpenter and when he comes home he hates seeing it on! He says "I've been doing this stuff all day ! Give me a break! I don't want to come home and see it here too!" Now he says maybe we'll win since you watch it all the time!

I fell in love with this house the second I saw it. My 10 year old daughter has our lives all planned out and fantasizes us winning! Hilton Head is one of our most favorite places on earth. No more Cleveland winters! What's inspired me more than anything else is my new found interest in "Living Green". Being a busy single mom, it just seemed like too much of a hassle for me. After really paying attention to the specials and ideas I find that some of it is really not that hard. Each month my daughter and I are coming up with another way we can help our planet. We are now recycling and for the month of May we will be buying those new fangled energy efficient light bulbs! Who'd of thought! Guess you have to start somewhere. When we win this house, we'll continue our new tradition. Good Luck everyone!

It is beautiful. However, did anyone else notice that the top bunk doesn't have a safety rail? Who would put a child up there to sleep without it? Maybe they just left it out of the picture? The bed is real cute but needs to be safe.
If I win it I will have to put a wheelchair ramp from the garage to the entry deck but that wouldn't be hard. I like the fact that the master bedroom is on the first floor.
The lamps and decorations are so unique. I wonder where they found such things.

Posted by Sherry – April 29, 2008 7:45 PM

Sherry, I also fell in love with the lamps, and everything else. It is just so beautiful, I wouldn't change a thing. I told my husband, if we win, I would pack 'some' clothes, my little bitty dog, be gone. But, in answer to your question, check out the 'New Green Resources - And Answers To Your Questions'..it will tell you about the furnishings. Also, May 4th at 5:00pm, HGTV is showing the special on the 'Green Home' again. Hope this helped.
Good Luck to you.

Sherry: I too noticed that the top bunkbed doesn't have a saftey rail. You can buy one at wal-mart pretty cheap though. I sure wouldn't put a child up there without one!

Deb, you are always so helpful and kind--thanks for all of your wonderful input on the blogs. I agree, I would give away and donate most of my things--and just move into that beautiful house. I wouldn't want to ruin it with my old stuff! It is so fun to dream about living there--imagining myself cooking, gardening, being green!! I am not much of a cook or a gardener, but I am sure living in the house would make me want to be great at both. Being green would be a natural outcome of living in the house--
Good luck--can't believe the time has almost arrived. I have missed every showing of the TV special, and can't record at this time, so I will not miss the May 4th showing!

HGTV, There's nothing left to be said. I am sure there are some of you that would love this home. Who wouldn't?? The entire town, the neighborhood, the location, the significance of it all, leave one speechless. There isn't anything that hasn't been taken into account. What an incredible place to retire to and celebrate the rest of your life. Thank you for the chance to dream.

I love this house! I particulary love all the use of colors and the theme of being eco-friendly. I've had never heard of a house being a "green" house, but I believe that it IS long overdue. Because of the growing public concern of protecting our environment and the future we're creating for the next generation, I applaud HGTV for not only helping to foster public awareness but for also establishing thier accountability in the fight against global warming. After looking at all this house has to offer, I think this house would be perfect for a new couple or family looking to live their new life together LIVING THE DREAM!

Perfect house, just the right size...Love it. Isn't it odd that the steps to the upstairs are right along the window in the front of the house. This is only the second time I've ever seen the stairs directly along side window and that was in a very old home belonging to a very dear aunt. Thanks for the beautiful contest offering.
