Shoe Holder in Entry Hall

shoe-holder-250x400.jpg

Blog reader sara asked: "The shoe holder in the entry way - where did it come from?"

This unique piece of furniture was designed by house planner Jack Thomasson. Not only is it beautiful, it helped the home achieve its Gold LEED status.

Want to learn more? Watch the "Furniture for Shoes" video in the Foyer tour (once you're there, click the video icon next to the shoe holder), read an interview with interior designer Linda Woodrum or view images of the shoe holder in the slide show.

That is great! At first glance, I didn't realize there was a bench as part of the piece. My wife loves it...

I have never won anything it would be so great to change that.

Posted by Theresa – March 18, 2008 9:46 PM

i want that greenhouse . how do i enter.

Posted by steve – March 18, 2008 10:06 PM

Great idea! We don't wear our shoes in the house or else we leave them close to the front or back door. Smart and stylish! Thanks Mr. Thomasson.

Such a beautiful piece of furniture! Jack you did a fabulous job. Would like to have one in my home, hopefully I can win this wonderful home and then I would have one. HMMMMM, sounds like a plan to me. lol. Can't wait to see the special and be able to enter.

Posted by cindy – March 18, 2008 11:33 PM

Jack, you've done it again!! Is there any way we could get/purchase plans for a similar one...if we don't win the Green Home, that is. ;-)

Posted by Catherine – March 19, 2008 12:55 AM

Looks beautiful, and is apropriate for the space, but the knobs are not alligned vertically and or horizontally. Now if we could find a place for the fishing boots (the chest-high type) out in the Seattle area they are worn for playing golf in the rain, along with a rain coat and bucket style hat.

When I was looking through the Green Home and where the Shoe Holder is....I loved it! Also, I show my husband Jim to see the Green home....that you built...we love it...it's so gorgeous!! You guys did a wonderful job!!! It will be real dream if we do actually win the home to live in it and have our Grandkids to come to see their special place to have their vacation. That's would be a Blessing!!

Posted by Mae-Lyn Chew – March 19, 2008 3:20 AM

Love the "shoecase" :) Do you realize it's almost time to start entering? I can see it now: all the kids and grandkids can come and visit, I've figured out how to sleep everyone (I'll be on the couch upstairs in the sitting room, but that's fine!)
While the guys take the golf cart over to the course, the girls, kids, and I will take that gorgeous Yukon to the mall! There's room for all of us plus one: future? I'll chauffer them around.... who am I kidding? They won't let me drive, and they'll probably fight over the keys. I know: one gets the master bedroom suite, the other gets to drive the Yukon while they are there.
Was reading up on it. Doesn't look like there would be much benefit to a retrofit to plug it into house power, even the braking system helps recharge. Can you imagine what a treat to be stuck in rush hour traffic and know you're not guzzling gas and belching out fumes? The only way it could be better is if it were 4 wheel drive to climb up some of these mountain dirt roads to jobsites.
Just green dreaming...

No more shoes scattered across the entryway? I have to get one of those!

Posted by Michelle – March 19, 2008 5:30 AM

I love the shoe cabinet/bench. For my home I turned a small cabinet into a shoe cabinet, but the one designed for this home is beautiful. I love how there is a small cubby for each pair of shoes. Is it possible to purchase this style shoe cabinet?

In my cabinet, I also keep slippers for visitors that are not comfortable going barefoot or just wearing their socks. You would be suprised at how some people don't want to remove their shoes.

Posted by Pam Easterly – March 19, 2008 6:05 AM

Kelly, Can you tell me where to buy the dog paintings that are located in the guest bathroom, second floor of the Green Home. Also who is the artist? I can not find this information anywhere. Thanks, velvet350

Posted by velvet350 – March 19, 2008 8:15 AM

I love this shoe sideboard, it would go with so many decors. I wounder if, the place where they go this, has a armoire for shoes?. This HGTV "Green" HOME is AWSOME!!! I can't wait to enter, the count down is on.

This is a beautiful and unique piece of furniture. Thank you for sharing it.

Posted by Joyce – March 19, 2008 9:18 AM

This house is absolutely stunning and I love the fact that it is a "green" home. My favorite - the fire pit and outdoor area! WOW. Of course, the interior is beautiful from the floors to the shaw ceramic in the bathrooms. Great job everyone!

Posted by LIZARDQUEEN27 – March 19, 2008 12:38 PM

best house so far in my opinion

Posted by michelle – March 19, 2008 1:47 PM

All I can say is that it is perfect- takes your breath away - wonderful design - it has everything anyone could ever want in a home. Can't wait to put my name in the pot. Best of Luck on your endeavors. I hope it brings great happiness to the winner.

Tell Jack to quit trying to embellish his resume.

Just kidding. It's a great idea.

Posted by adele – March 19, 2008 3:23 PM

I went through the entire house and the outdoors. Everything is absolutely beautiful and very useful. The shoe chest is a great idea, and a nice piece of furniture. The walnut flooring is gorgeous. Well, I guess that I love all of it, and cannot wait to enter for a chance to win such a wonderful house. Great job everyone!!!

I believe this Green Home is just a glimps of what mansions will be in heaven ! I'm so ready for the day entering contest ! Better yet having this blessed gift as a home & address ! Yes, within this beautiful designed Green Home, shoe's would come off and be placed within cabinet.
I'll be praying hard to win the HGTV Dream !

Posted by Mr. Mitchell W. Tickle – March 19, 2008 7:49 PM

To ‘Connie’ ... while I salute your spirit, I question your judgment. And also HGTV’s judgment. The notion that the Yukon is somehow ‘green’ is patently absurd. GMC is about as green as Kermit the Frog is purple. While the hybrid version is certainly an improvement over the regular version, going from 14 mpg to 20 mpg isn’t all that great. And the magazine reviews suggest it does not even get to 20 but only to 17 (see Kiplinger, eg). It would be hard to do worse. In fact, many cars from the early 70s, before the Energy Crisis, still get better mileage.

No, I can’t imagine what a treat it would be to be stuck in rush hour traffic. Especially if I am in a Yukon guzzling gas and belching fumes.

I didn't see anything about geothermal. Is it?

Posted by Nancy – March 19, 2008 11:47 PM

Nice! Your not only good a picking location, but quite handy with tools, and the design, love it! How long did it take to build this home the 23sec. show makes one wish it could be done in a blink of an eye. [ It's EXQUISITE ! ]

I just love this house and location. This is absolutely the best. Anyone lucky enough to win this should be thankful. The location is perfect for fishing, and boating. The people of S.Carolina are friendly and welcoming. This is a great place to vacation, but to actually live there would be unbelievable.

Posted by anthony – March 20, 2008 4:03 PM

I can't seem to find the location of the Green Home. Am I just not seeing it? I love the house and can so see myself living there!

Posted by Wilhelmina Rotella – March 20, 2008 4:16 PM

I never really noticed that, it's really nice.

Love the Butt-Board used on the foyer walls. It kind of reminds me of the old-fashioned tongue-ingrooved wood used in older homes, which blends in nicely with the antique pieces Linda added. Isn't it great that we now have so many things to use in home construction that are eco-friendly and yet still so beautiful! Think the toilet using roof runoff is also a wonderful idea. I absolutely have to have one of the shoecases. Are they for sale? If not, can I obtain a pattern for it?

Posted by Teresa – March 20, 2008 10:42 PM

Yes I will admit that as a guy HGTV is not my favorite channel but my girlfriend loves it and so I have been forced to watch it regularly. Now I'm starting to enjoy some of the shows. What has she done to me? And when I found out about the dream homes you did for people and now this Green Home...I was amazed.
The shoe cabinet is very clever. My girlfriend(soon to be fiance) is always complaining about the shoes all over our house. She would definitely love this! What a dream come true if we could win this home and then we could start our family. I wouldn't want to raise children in the house we live in now but this wonderful Green Home, absolutely!!
Thanks HGTV!

Posted by Robert – March 21, 2008 6:30 AM

I loved the Dream House in the Keys but I love this Green Home even more! The fact that it was built with the environment in mind is beautiful!
I am BIG on taking shoes off at the door and they usually end up in a pile. This cabinet is the best idea I've ever seen!

I WANT ONE!

Leave it to HGTV to bring us the best. At the very least we can always expect to get something new and unique. This home is wonderful. Though my dream home or any's would have been the home in the Keys, Hilton head is very close. We will be going there this weekend to see the home I know my eyes will be popping out of head as I see the workmanship up close.

Posted by sarah – March 21, 2008 9:36 AM

oh my god this is so cute and handy. its totally perfect

Posted by Allison – March 21, 2008 9:48 AM

This is the first thing I would change. I NEVER TAKE OFF MY SHOES, hate going bare foot on hard wood. Just wouldn't use it ever. IF I can't wear my shoes then I change the flooring or system so I can.

Posted by irchr – March 23, 2008 10:16 PM

Where are construction details? Not just for this - the drying rack from the laundry is what I want to build. Drawings and notes would be a nice touch for a "DIY" network to offer.

Posted by Ira – March 25, 2008 10:17 AM

I wanted to know where I could buy the Dog paintings in the upstairs bath. I tried to see the artist name but the photo was too blurry. I really loved those paintings

Posted by GINA MARIE SMITH – March 25, 2008 2:02 PM

Really a great home. Where can I find the house plans or number? My husband and I very much like the style and layout but don't know where to find it?

Posted by Diana – March 26, 2008 9:43 AM

I would love to win the house and live by the water , my grand boys and family would love to visit , it is a lovely home and great to be energy efficient , they would love the golf cart and if you could go fishing in the water would be right up my husband alley , we all love to fish and the kitchen oh my goodness I fell in love with it , I can see the boys roasting marshmellows at the fire pit now. If I could win this I would be in heaven !

Posted by cathy – March 26, 2008 2:46 PM

I love the trundle chest!! My son and daugher
in law are buidling a house, and this would be
a perfect gift to give them! Any chance the
plans to build the chest will be available?
This is a very unique and usefull piece of
furniture in any home.

What a beautiful home inside and out!
My husband loves to golf, this would be paradise for him! For me..just being in the warmth of the Carolina sun is enough for me. Good Luck to everyone.

Posted by Nancy – March 29, 2008 9:23 AM

Oh what a wonderful house and location...BRAVO!

My husband and I live in S.C..He loves to golf and fish. I love to walk on the beach. This home would be perfect for our family. We both feel it is important to recycle, conserve water and energy as much as possible as much for our planet as well as our wallet!!It would be great to own a home that helps you do both and looks so amazing!!!

Posted by Dana – March 30, 2008 6:26 PM

Ilove the shoe holder in the foyer! We always take off our shoes before walking on the carpet. We have shoe stackers for our shoes but yours is much nicer and much prettier!plus your's has a bench that goes so perfectly that you don't know it's there until you pull it out.
SWEET!!!!!

What a gorgeous house, and I fell in love with the backyard. What a great place to relax. Beautiful job!!!!! We are on our way to being empty nesters and boy, oh boy, that would sure make me feel better. What a wonderful place to retire and have visitors.

Posted by Merry – April 1, 2008 10:49 AM

I love this house. I enter every time, but I REALLY want this one. And yes, that shoe cabinet is to die for.......

Posted by Julie – April 3, 2008 6:52 PM

As in most Asian and Hawaiian homes, we don't wear shoes either. The only downside to this is the massive piles of shoes that collect near the door! For the two years we have lived in our home in VA, I have been searching for the "perfect piece" of furniture for our foyer, and I was so excited to see this trundle chest. However, my initial joy has turned to frustration since I can't get one for my own. Please, please make this available, soon!
Thanks!

Posted by Monica S. Merchant – April 3, 2008 9:08 PM

Is this shoe bench available to buy? If not when will it be available? If so where can I purchase it?

It's just what I have been looking for. Thanks for any help that you can give me.

Posted by Noreen – April 4, 2008 11:16 AM

I really wish I could buy something like this my front froyer is always full of shoes. It would be wonderful if I could win this house I've been entering all these sweepstakes for years I hve been battling cancer for over a year now and now they tell me that it's in my liver so this would be a wonderful house to go to and recuperate for me and my family

we really love the green home.
i lived in beaufort, south carolina for six years in the 70's when my father was in the marine corps. it was great!
we still have family there.
when my 3 grown children was young we moved back to beaufort for four years.
my husbands job brought us to ohio.
it would be such a blessing to win this green home.
we have so many great memories of s.c. and would love to have more.
ohio is beautiful too. but we love the weather in south carolina much better.
good luck to everyone entering.

Wow! I am addicted to HGTV. I consider it educational and entertaining. This home is so fabulous, I can hardly sleep thinking I may actually win. I salute the craftsmen, designers and architect. It would be an honor and privledge just to see. However I am worried I have a bad case of covetousness from viewing it online so often. Pray for me.

Posted by Nancy – April 8, 2008 6:41 PM

I too am covetous! Also realistic. Probably won't win, but it is fun to dream!!! Don't know how I'd afford the taxes that would accompany such a prize though... any ideas? And, yes! The shoe cabinet is a great idea and I would love to see plans for it become available.

Posted by Danielle – April 9, 2008 5:12 PM

This is my first time to enter, and wouldn't you know the last day. Well you never know. The home is too good to be true. and winning it would be TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE !!! Good luck to all.

Posted by Linda Moore – April 9, 2008 5:45 PM

I know the lamp in the laundry room is from Stray Dog Designs, b/c we sell it at the store I work at. The green lamps in the bedroom look like they came from there also. Those cool dog paintings may have come from there also.
