Green Home Paint Colors and Other FAQs

Happy Friday, everybody! I've compiled the interior and exterior paint colors an easy-to-download pdf:

PDFGreen Home 2008 interior and exterior paint colors

If you ever wondered where to find that glass shower door in the master bath, the farmhouse sink in the kitchen or any of the other eco-friendly items the Green Home, check out the Green Home space on HGTV MarketPlace. There you'll find all the products, fixtures and paint colors in one place (conveniently divided room by room), plus you can buy everything you see. It's a wonderful way to start going green, one product at a time.

To wrap up today's post, here are the answers to some frequently asked questions:

- "New development" and "eco-friendly" are no longer mutually exclusive ideas. The Tradition development is built by Core Communities, which is an industry leader in green development and is committed to preserving the integrity of the natural environment. Learn more about Tradition Hilton Head's landscaping, gray-water irrigation systems, on-staff LEED pros and green golf course.

- The palm trees are native to the site.

- The water heaters are tankless.

- All of the materials, strapping and fasteners meet hurricane code requirements.

- The powder room door opens facing the front door instead of the hallway because that was where the architect put it. (This answer makes me laugh! Thanks to home planner Jack Thomasson for providing it.)

- The SUV is a GMC Yukon Hybrid and it gets up to 50% better fuel economy when compared to a conventional engine.

- Starting Friday, March 21, you'll be able to enter to win the home! You can enter once a day through May 9. We'll open the sweepstakes Friday morning around 9 a.m. at Green Home Central, so stay tuned!

Dear Kelly,

Just wanted to say thank you for answering some of our questions.

My daughter(almost 4 yrs) and I look at the site daily and can't wait to go see the house when actual touring starts.

Green is our last name. So when we look at the house my daughter thinks the house is ours because she see the letters spelling out "green" in many of the rooms. I thought it was cute when she commented on this. Children say the darnest things, can't help but laugh and hope.

Thanks again for a beautiful Green home for us to dream about.

The shoe holder in the entry way where did it come from?

Posted by sara – March 14, 2008 5:11 PM

The house is just wounderful!! The colors sooths the soul when you take the tour. The fire pit is a great idea. Because I can just dream about how wounderful that would be to see the sun going down and the orange/yellow and red flames coming up.The area were your sitting must look so fab.
I hope my son and I will be able to enjoy the home that everyone worked so hard on. It's a work of art in it's self. The way the garden has it's own water feed from the rain water and water around the house was a great idea. I never thought you could do that. WOW You guys went all out.
GERAT JOB!!!

Thanks for the additional information. Notice the Yukon Hybrid! Have found you can't even buy one in my area, so that is a real treasure. So much vehicle for the gas mileage. Our local Energy Company has also been promoting the idea of adding an after-market plug-in battery for hybrids. Unfortunately, it costs about $10K installed(maybe more for a big vehicle like this), but at least the solar cells on the roof of the Green Home could help keep it charged.
With going green, it is not always about how long it takes(or even whether) you get back your original investment, but whether it is the right thing to do for the environment.
Way to go, HGTV! Cadconnie

Posted by Lisa – March 15, 2008 9:43 AM

WOW! This is a beautiful home. I can see me and my husband enjoying every square inch. More importantly what a wonderful location for our children to come and visit for some much deserved "down time" since two of the three are in the military and are or have been serving in Afghanistan. THANKS FOR GOING GREEN!

Sara March 14, 2008 5:11 PM in response to your question about the shoe rack,

This is from the foyer room description
"A home can obtain credit toward LEED certification by controlling indoor contaminants. One way to do this is to design a space near the primary entrance for removing and storing shoes. It must be large enough to accommodate a bench and at least two pairs of shoes per bedroom.
The focal point of the foyer, located to the right of the door, is the shoe storage area that the home's architect, Jack Thomasson, designed and had built just for the Green Home. The bottom piece is a pull-out bench, where you can sit to remove your shoes. Above it is a storage area with nine cubbyholes. Since the Green Home sleeps seven, that's two more spaces than the LEED certification requires."

Hope this answer your question.

I have never seen such a soothing and peaceful home. It reminds me of when I was growing up as a little girl. The bueatiful colors that are so clean and warm. The bueatiful antiques placed through out the home just makes it even more of that home away from home feel. What a sight that would be to see this incredible home in person. As a Naturalist, a comforting and energy safe as well as organic use in the home, it just doesn't get any more dreamy then that. These homes just keep getting better and better. It would truely be a dream for me and my family.

This house is perfect! My husband and I have been slowly transforming our 120+ year old house into a green home. We started with geothermal heating & cooling. We have also been replacing our windows & doors with energy efficent ones. Way to go HGTV! This house is what I would consider the perfect home.

Posted by Dawn – March 16, 2008 10:53 PM

What's the square footage of the Green Home? Looks smaller than the other houses. Are there going to be any tours of the house itself? I don't live too far away and I would love to see it. On another subject: The rules state that any resident of the US, it's territories, and commonwealths can participate except for residents of Puerto Rico, why? Puerto Rico IS part of the US, it's residents are American citizens, so why not? I'm just curious.

Posted by Fran – March 17, 2008 2:40 AM

WOW - A GREEN HOME!! HOW ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY! I cannot wait until we can start entering to win it. Hilton Head is a day's drive from my house. GOOD LUCK TO THE WINNER! When will they announce the winner? I want to mark it on my calendar now.

Posted by Tammy – March 17, 2008 4:12 AM

Does this home get water from the air conditioning system for irrigating the garden or watering the yard?? I'm not sure how this is done but hope to contact a friend who has installed such a system into her home in this area where we're in the midst of a drought. Maybe others have used this method of obtaining water... The Green home is beautiful. How many square feet are in the home? I love the screened porch and wish all the porches in the home were screened (an important feature in the "buggy" south). Sometimes at the beach, mosquitos are blown away by the breeze. I love the fans on the front porch. This home is just lovely......

Posted by b. ashley – March 17, 2008 4:19 AM

This is a beautiful "Green" home. I would love to win this home, as would everyone else. At least we know after last night with the Dream Home, that if you're going to be the winner, they will notify you in advance so that question was answered for all of us. I love the fact this home is energy efficient and what a wonderful job they did with this! Great job!

Posted by Alecia – March 17, 2008 11:00 AM

I can't wait till Sunday when we get our first tour of the HGTV GREEN HOME, I hope after the disaster that they had with the winner of the HGTV DREAM HOME, the winner of this home is not only getting a beatiful home and very cozy but a green home, I hope that the give away will be a little bit more entertaining.

The oil paintings are just beautiful and vibrant. They really add a lovely accent to the home. The layout of the home has a good flow. Very organized. Just by looking at the photos of the Green Home it appears so inviting and warm. It would be a dream come true for my husband and I. We have always dreamed of having a home in SC for our retirement years. We vacation in SC often and love the warm hospitality and the beautiful state. Looking forward to entering and winning this wonderful eco friendly home.

They always design these houses to look so awesome. GOod luck to all when the contest begins. Not only will someone be a gorgeous home but will be helping the environment to! You go HGTV!!

Kudos! You have done it again- only now it's not just a lovely functional home, but it's eco-friendly. How wonderful & creative- let's hope it helps point other contractors in the same green direction.
I have to say this is every bit as nice & attractive as the dream homes always are!

Posted by Laurie G – March 17, 2008 8:39 PM

i think this house is much better than the dream home mainly because more people can afford to live there and it helps the enviornment. :)

It's perfect for us, because we have two daughters and I have a husband and then there's me!
Hope we win!!
Good luck to all!!

I love the layout and the practical aspects of the house. Maybe they should incorporate those into next year's dream home? The only thing I don't care for is that neon green counter in the master bath.Couldn't they come up with something softer?

Posted by GAyle – March 20, 2008 12:52 PM

I agree with Gayle, that counter is not very attractive, I like green but why that shade? I know that Linda W. likes that color because she has used it in several of the Dream Homes. The rest of the house is wonderful thou, and I would love to win it.

Posted by Anonymous – March 21, 2008 1:19 AM

The colors are beautiful they have a relaxing feeling in the home ,I can see the surroundings of nature colors, and the childrens room would be perfect for my foster children. I really love the house

Posted by Natene – March 21, 2008 4:25 PM

This house is beautifully decorated!! I can't wait to see who wins and their reaction. It is always so exciting. I am getting married in August of this year and that would be the best wedding present ever! What a great way that would be to start and we would be able to grow into it as well. Good luck to all. I am keeping my fingers crossed. :)

I'm currently building a home and love the wood floors in the HGTV Green Home. Can you tell me what kind of wood was used, what is the stain color, and who is the manufacturer?

Posted by Sherri – March 21, 2008 11:47 PM

My question is the same as the above question. Are the blueprints available for purchase.
Including appliances, HVAC, and Plumbing.

Posted by Brooke Hudson – March 22, 2008 12:19 AM

We love the house, of course. Just wondering---what is the body of water out back? A man-made lake, a stream, the OCEAN?? Nice beighborhood, too. Can't wait to win it. We've been "green" for years. It's in a perfect location for our retirement, warm and beautiful. Thanks for building such a "practical" Home.

Posted by Lynda Carpenter – March 22, 2008 11:48 PM

I love the house! I told my husband if we don't win, we're selling ours and building this house! What a great plan and how fun to know you are going "green". Our children are becoming so aware of the importance of "green". The world is changing for the better. Thanks for being a leader.

Posted by Jennifer Z – March 22, 2008 11:49 PM

Been reading all of the Blogs. Everyone is loving this house. HGTV always puts 101% into there homes. Once again you have out done yourselves. "Great" work. Best of luck to everyone.

Posted by romagrace – March 23, 2008 8:02 PM

Why in the world did you guys build such a beautiful home on the outside and then paint the inside such awful colors. And to top it all off what were you guys thinking in those bathrooms? I love green (in the sense of energy efficient) but you blew it with your countertops (and that includes the kitchen-which is sad because it had the making of a beautiful kitchen). Needless to say HGTV needs to actually think about actual taste and not just let a designer who has only one dimension of design. You've lost my vote on any homes that are built in the future - also lost my desire to watch quite a few of your shows in the future.

Posted by Teresa – March 23, 2008 9:50 PM

The interior colors are not my taste either. WAY TOO BRIGHT and not relaxing for me. The worst in this house is the green counter top in the master bath, I really dislike that green and it looks cheap with the curtain under it. Such a nice lay out, and then it is cheapened with the little curtains under the counters in the bathes and the pantry etc. I like color just not like they use it in the last few homes. Maybe they need to rotate designers.

Posted by irchr – March 23, 2008 10:30 PM

As Vicki et al have asked, my husband and I would love to know whether the blueprints of the green home will be available to the viewers--possibly sell them and give the money to charity like you you are doing for the tours. We love the home and would love to be able to purchase the plans to build our own green home. We are currently in the process of planning a new home.

Posted by Helen – March 24, 2008 1:54 AM

I agree about rotating out these designers. I like the exterior design - the proportions are excellent and the details look good, patio areas and interior flow of the house are also good, but I could never live here. It looks like total chaos on the inside. Flooring is too colorful, wall colors look like a circus, furniture doesn't look like it has any sense of quality, and there's STUFF everywhere. It looks like noise from room to room. Where's the calm and restraint?

Posted by pacodog – March 24, 2008 4:50 AM

In the living room of the 2008 Green House; what color paint did you use on the planket part of the wall? Is it white or something else?

Posted by Fred – March 24, 2008 8:41 AM

what is the square footage of each floor including garage?

Posted by brandi – March 24, 2008 3:39 PM

I am so happy that HGTV is helping the environ- ment and teaching us all how easy it is to live ECO-friendly.We have been recycling for years and utilizing many of the principles of GREEN living by reusing furniture, clothing and items that had been discarded.I always try to compost and love the smell of clothes hung outside to dry. It's easy to find alternative uses for items,(ie.the zinc bins that were once in locker rooms now being used to house cooking utensils and food staples. My husband, whose degree is in Environmental Research Management had actually created a solar based heating system for our pool, installed a skylight, and we are thinking about installing a rain water collection system to water plants, wash cars, etc. I think it is great that the unused solar energy captured at the HGTV Green home will be sold back to an energy company and that a "gray water" system was installed.Whether we win the GREEN home or not,I think it is absolutely essential that we all try to do our part to help Mother Earth and preserve our environment for the generations to come. After all, we're all in this together! Thank-you HGTV! JoAnn in PA.

Posted by JoAnn – March 24, 2008 3:39 PM

What do you approximate the tax responsibility will be for the winner of this BEAUTIFUL PROPERTY? I am wondering if it will be affordable for the winner to actually keep the house.
Thank You!
Good Luck all!

Two burning questions-

Who makes the wonderful kitchen cabinets (manufacturer, style and finish)?

Who is the manufacturer and what is the style of the pocket door in the master bath?

I've looked all over the website, blog, and marketplace and can't find the answers to these two questions. Thanks!!

The 2008 green home is beautiful. Would you be able to tell me where to purchase the small round, white mirrors on the wall in the guest bedroom, and where I can find the artist who did the bird painting in that same room. Any other information on the accessories in that room would be helpful as only a few items are listed on the product list.

I agree with Tyler. I like this home much better than the big dream homes. It's more down to earth. The winner could keep this house. Give away 2 of these homes instead of one big one. More people could afford them. Thanks I hope I win. I love to play golf and live by the water. The home is perfect.

It will remind whoever wins that they are living in the HGTV GREEN HOME!!I do wish it had a t.v. in the living room though and a 4th bedrooom for my office. We live in a 4 bedroom house now but if I win I will think of something. The storage space adjacent to the cubby might work.

How come there is not more product info on the "Marketplace" portion of this website?
The "Exterior" section only has ten products and I think four to the featured products are simply different Benjamin Moore colors. How inadequate! For example, how do you find out who makes the interesting leader and gutter system. If HCTV wants to encourage others to build green the products used need to be easier to access. Any hints to find out more info on individual manufacturers/suppliers of all products used inside and outside the home?

Building a green home is a wonderful idea! It's a home where I would love for my family to live in. It's so peacful and beautiful! It's a style for me I could live with all my life. I like things natural and healthly for me and my family. I think you should make a book on exterior and interior design on this house for people to have ideas to go by. I've been entering everyday. What a blessing it would be if we won.
