The HGTV Green Home, located in Tradition Hilton Head, SC, has received a significant Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification and the Environmental Media Association’s (EMA) Green Seal Award for the production of the HGTV Green Home 2008 television special which airs Sunday, March 23 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

The traditionally styled, low-country cottage, which features construction and design elements that contribute to an energy efficient, cleaner and healthier living environment, will be presented to one lucky viewer during a live broadcast on Sunday, June 8, 2008 at 10:00 p.m. ET. The HGTV Green Home Giveaway 2008 will open for entries once per day beginning Friday, March 21, 2008 through Friday, May 9, 2008.

The Gold LEED certification signifies that the HGTV Green Home, with approximately 2,000 square feet of space, meets stringent standards for sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, indoor environmental quality and innovative design. LEED for Homes, a voluntary rating system, is a project of the U.S. Green Building Council.

The EMA Green Seal Awards are awarded to TV/film productions and entertainment industry corporate offices that follow the EMA checklist of “green” choices for behind-the-scenes and everyday office activities. Scripps Productions, a division of Scripps Networks, received the honor in recognition of its “green” efforts in energy usage, resource conservation and recycling during production of the HGTV Green Home 2008 special.

“We are proud of our commitment to the environment through the Green Home Giveaway,” said HGTV President Jim Samples. “We have heard from many of our viewers that they are interested in hearing more about green lifestyles. The HGTV Green Home Giveaway provides an excellent opportunity to showcase examples of accessible and eco-friendly approaches to living and our production staff is to be commended for their efforts to be environmentally-conscious throughout the production process.”

First of all My husband and I love Hilton Head. We visit every year once if not twice in he summer months. In fact we will be there on June 8th for a week and I would love to know the address to see the house. My husband and I live in a home built in 1890, in Middletown, In., a very small town. Our retirement goals are to move around the Hilton Head area. I am soooo excited!!! We enter the home giveaways everyday for the past few years but we have not been chosen winners. To win this home would be a true blessing for us. Congrats on selecting a beautiful location for this home. Thanks, Joni Dick

My husband and I live in Dayton, Nv. We do our best to live "green" by recycling, conserving energy, and are starting to compost our waste this year for our garden. Your "green" home is a DREAM home! We'd love to live near the ocean, and so we vacation there every year. How wonderful it would be to live our dream in a green, oceanside home! I will enter every day and hope we are the lucky ones to live out our lives in this magnificent locale. Thank-you for all the hard work and thoughtful planning.

The real estate channel for my area is the channel prior to HGTV and I often find myself flipping back and forth. The Green Home Giveaway caught my attention and I ran back to my computer as excited as a five yr old on Christmas to find out more...What I saw was beautiful and efficient. I would love to come back from my upcoming deployment and share this home with my husband and five yr old son.

My family and I would love to have our own home. I have 3 children 2 grils and 1 boy. my husband is the only one that works. I am disabled. To win this house would be a dream come true. I have always dreamed of having my own home. Something to call my own. I love to watch HGTV decorating ideas. I live in a appartment so I cannot paint or hang anything on the walls. Because when we move out it has to be left like the day we moved in. my kids and husband desirve a home. They take care of me and I love them. God bless you HGTV for making these home. And making dreams come true

I have just looked at the green home it looks wonderful. I would love to win it I have never been to Hilton Head, but my son and daughter-in-law live just outside of Charlotte, NC they are expecting their first child and I am about to retire and become a grandma for the first time. It would be wonderful to move so close to them. My husband and I recycle all the time and we have solar panels on our home in New York and try to conserve as much energy as possible. The panels really help with the heating bills.

It is absolutely beautiful. Again I hope who ever wins will be grateful and respectful of what, how and why this home has been built, and nurture it rather than take it for granted. We must all do our part. There are so many delicate things on our planet now, and we must be mindful of them all. Please keep in my whoever wins, there are taxes to pay and insurances to keep up on these. Please be sure you can pay them.

This house is FANTASTIC! We live in Virginia, and our dream is to live in this area, and we love "Green"..We must all do our part! I can't wait to see the program and it would be more than a dream come true to win!!

Leed is a wounderful way to make sure everyone is on the same page. And that everything is truly green. I looked at all the footage and everyone did a great job making the house and making sure it's green. The tankless heater, low presser water flow, lighting, garden using its own water from rain and water from around the house. Just everything

I hope my son and I get picked to live in this wounderful home. I've never owned my own home. I've been to rapped up in sending my son to private school and putting my self back though school.
Great Job

It is really nice to green building getting so much exposure. I am a contractor and have been trying educate my customer on what they can do. This really helps to get the message out there and make it easier for me to have more customers go green. Look forward to the episode.

I love the idea, of the interlocking corkwood floors made from the oakcork tree. It insulates and acts as a sound barrier, easy to clean and no toxic chemicals used to lay it. Just teriffic.!!!
Thanks for the full discriptions on this 2000 sq foot greenhome, it's diffinately imaginable for sure.

Is the corkoak flooring soft to walk on?

Comparing this to other flooring, is it more expensive?
Thanks

the house is everything anyone could walk into and feel at home. I have been trying to go green in my life and the house has given me more info on what I can do to do more in my life that is better for our envirorment. Thanks

I just built a new home, out in the country and we went "light green". We didn't go near as far as this home but I think my home is more liveable. We tried to make it as energy efficient as possible and as eco friendly as we could and still live there.

In this GREEN HOME, the linen and cotton covers on the furniture would last one visit with my 7 grand children, who are well mannered by the way, but would require too many cleanings and thus more energy than a synthetic one.

Can't we have green and liveable in the same home?

Maybe I am too old or can't see the whole concept yet. But for me the house was just a bit too deep a "GREEN" and I like light green. But I love the over all design.

Great idea; getting LEED involved. I hope that in future homes you will keep some of what you learned in mind. (I know we will)
The concept of protecting the environment and saving money on bills at the same time is great.

Praise the Lord,

This home is just the perfect home for my wonderful family and me. We are retiring at the end of the year and are planning to move to Summerton or Sumter SC., ( which is only two hours away )and then you built the Dream Green Home just for us. My husband and I are both in our 60s and we are raising our three year old grandson. This would be a perfect place to bring him up and not here in Philadelphia. Thank you HGTV for making dreams come true. You are truley a blessing.

Great house, but questionable location?

http://www.thehhiteam.com/OurBlog

"Tradition Hilton Head's Jasper Home as been selected as HGTV's next "Dream Home", to be given away March 21-May 9, 2008. Valued at $850,000, the Jasper House will be LEEDs certified and reflect Tradition's commitment to building modern home in modern communities, with a minimum impact on the environment (so they say). As a longtime local, Tradition Hilton Head seems to have done exactly what Hilton Head has not done...clear cut the land, with no respect for the surrounding environment and only looking at the bottom line. A word of caution to buyers: One of the Core Communities subsidiaries (who owns Magnolia's Walk, a portion of Tradition Hilton Head) has filed for bankruptcy. Only two lots have been sold and Levitt Corp. has laid off over 400 people. There are many solid communities South of the Broad River...we're not sure Tradition will be one of them anytime in the near future. ***these figures were to the best of my knowledge and were believed to be current when this article was written (inserted 3/24/2008). Please remember much of what it written in a blog is opinion and facts are checked whenever possible. Please email ashleylashbrook@gmail.com if you have more current figures. Thanks! "

This house is perfect! It's gorgeous, the location is great, and you can feel good about living in this eco-friendly house. I am a pre-k teacher in Greenville, SC. I'm also familiar with the Hilton Head area, since I have some family friends that live down there, and I think it's such a great place for the first Green Home. It's actually funny because I've been thinking about moving down to the area, and get a Early Childhood teaching position in one of the districts down there. These districts are in need of money for better school conditions, more teachers and staff, and better materials for their classrooms. There is actually a lawsuit against the State Board of Education right now, in which 8 counties across the I-95 corridor are asking for more state financial support. This is a very sad situation, but hope is there. And I think if I were to say... win a house in a sweepstakes that's in that area (hint-hint), it would work out perfectly! But good luck to everyone! It's such a cool house!

I love the idea of owning a LEED home. My husband and I have learned a lot about this style of building lately in the construction management classes we have been taking. We've been making updates to our current home keeping these "best practices" in mind and we would LOVE to have this home. Best of luck to all of us!

Congratulations on the LEED certification!! It's just one more reason to be a loyal HGTV viewer! As an enviornmental studies major and future environmental lawyer, I understand the importance and value of achieving this level of LEED. I'm very proud of you guys!!!!

I would love to be the winner of this home because it fits right in with the eco values my husband and I strive each day to live by (he really has no choice being married to a treehugger, hehehe). We always find the awesome green ideas that you guys come up with easy to incorporate into each project we undertake when it comes to our current home (hint, hint - property taxes are something we are used to paying). I try every day to let people know that HGTV is honestly and truly committed to the protection of our environment!!! Of course, anyone who watches the programming knows that.

Congratulations once again and I hope you continue to incorporate green design and values into all of your future dream homes!!!

My husband and I would LOVE to retire to this area, and this home would be perfect! After raising 7 children together, we are ready to downsize our home, and simplify our lives. Grandchildren are coming, and having a place for all of them to come and visit would be wonderful! The fact that it is already environmentally friendly, is GREAT! The LEED directive in this whole area, is an idea that I hope will spread to more new communities. We need to protect our earth for the future generations! I am entering every chance I get! I tried for the last dream home in Florida too...That one was a little large, but this home is a perfect size. THANKYOU for giving this oportunity to everyone, and leading the way in showing us how to be more GREEN in our everyday lives! Keep up the good work!
