I'm happy to announce that, on March 23 at 9:00 p.m., I'll host HGTV’s first ever Green Home special, where HGTV will give you the inside story on this eco-friendly home!
Check out the videos in the player on Green Home Central, especially the Behind the Scenes Tour. We didn't just build a green house; we shot a green TV special, too. From the hybrid vehicles, to the fluorescent lighting, to the eco-friendly catering, you'll be surprised how far we went to keep our whole project green!
The Green Home is truly amazing. Each room is unique, with careful attention paid to every eco-friendly detail. The kitchen and living room are very relaxing and have a great flow. Both enjoy views of the water and work well with each other. The timber on the walls gives the home a real Low Country look. The gray-water system and solar panels make the house energy efficient. The winner will save a bundle on bills!
I know some people may shy away when they hear the word "green," but trust me -- this house is incredible. I believe people will be inspired by this remarkable home. And starting March 21, you can enter the sweepstakes to win it!
Good luck to everyone and don't forget that there's a special, surprise gift from me to the lucky new homeowner. (Editor's note: I've seen the surprise - it totally rocks. Tune into the TV special for the big reveal!)
I can't wait to meet the winner!

The house is absolutely wonderful. It is such a useable size and eco friendly, can't beat that. The decorating is also phenominal. Have been a fan of yours for a long time and I think you are doing a great job with the "green" work.

I can't wait until March 21st when we can enter the sweepstakes! I keep trying to win a dream home on HGTV because I'd love to be able to surprise my dear, hard working husband with a gorgeous green home like this one! Good luck to all who enter!

Carter, as the winner of the first ever Green Home I can hardly wait to meet you either! I think this home is AWESOME! Can't wait to see it in person when I pick up my keys to the front door! :)

Carter, I am very impressed with the green home especially since I have always considered that a green home had to be different with alot of big junky stuff sitting all over and around it. I can't even see the solar panels or the gray water system and I also thought it would look so much different than it does. Just looking at the g. h. you never would know it was different. It fits it's surroundings and it is beautifully pulled together. The best part of all is like you said it has energy efficiency and will save the winner bundle on the bills. You all did a great job with good taste.

WOW! Carter is one of my favorites on HGTV. I'm so glad he is hosting. I absolutely love the Green Home and I'm excited. I will enter every day for sure. Thanks, HGTV!

Dear Carter, I'm excited about the new HGTV Green Home, I think it's absolutely beautiful. I'm a big fan of HGTV since I've become a homowner 6 years ago and stated to turn my funky fixer-upper into my "almost" dream home, and now more than ever I'm a bigger fan since I've seen you and watch your show every Thursday. I think you're a great host, a really nice guy, you're talented and have a GREAT smile, and you've GOT to know how HOT you are! What could be better than a great looking carpenter who loves to make people happy and make their dreams come true!

Hello Carter, I can not wait to see the special! And waiting to enter to win has been like setting on pins and needles!
This is such a perfect house and saves on the energy bill too! This is just what I need. I missed the corner store from my childhood days and just being able to walk to where you need to go with out even having to start the car is great!
Looking forward to seeing you on the green home special!

Hi Carter, nice to meet you.
I just finished taking the 360 tour, WHAT A BEAUTIFUL HOME!!!!! AND THE VIEW!!!! Breath taking!!! I love the country design with the white partial wood walls. The childrens room is so adorable, my grandchildren would love this room, although I have 10 grandchildren, guess they'll have to take turns... I just LOVE the whole house especially the pantry & kitchen. This is my dream home someday. HGTV DID A BEAUTIFUL JOB ON THIS HOME, and picked a really nice place to put it, Hilton Head, SC.
Thank you for the heads up on THE GREEN HOME SPECIAL. I won't forget that date, March 23rd it's Easter!! and it's my birthday!! How about that?

Before I retire tonight to dream of the fabulous home you have designed, I wanted to throw "my hat in the ring" and say, the home is everything we could dream to own. We lived in Beaufort, SC ten years, where we raised our two daughters.
We now have 3 grandchildren with another on the way. After 34 years of marriage, (tomorrow!) we plan to someday be able to "go home." I hope it will be in this home!

This home is beautiful, and it being echo friendly makes it even more exciting I will enter the Green home sweepstakes every day good luck to everyone HGTV RULES!!!

When it says that you can enter as many times as you want if you mail in your entry does that mean you can mail in a hundred a day (if you could afford the stamps). You can only enter once a day online. If anybody knows if this is true. Post back

Great job Carter! The home is not only absolutely beautiful but it is truly green!! I can't wait to see the TV special and learn more about my future home.
I can't wait to meet you either! :)
Thank you so much for building a great place to raise children and teach them to be eco-friendly!

Finally - an HGTV home that is not only beautiful but is within grasp if I did win! I could actually keep it!!!
Posted by Jo – March 10, 2008 9:22 AM
This is a very nice house but the price is still out of reach for most people. The house may be free but the taxes, etc., are not and I don't think most people who enter realize this. Why doesn't HGTV let people know approximately how much they will have to fork over if they win this house? I know the rules say you have to be able to pay for taxes, etc., but they don't say how much. Even just giving a percentage, say 50% of value of house, would give people an idea.

Mr. Carter,
Your Green Home reminds me of my daughter, Shannon Whitt and her husband Nathan. They love open space and are always finding ways to recycle. Just the lay out, the design and of course echo friendly reminds me of them. What a wonderful idea. I am just so proud of Mr. Carter and HGTV for using recycled items and loving the earth as much as we do. Thank you Mr. Carter and HGTV.

Looks good. Wish you would use a Dome Style house to give a better protection for huricanes but this house does look good. Thank you for getting a house that is within the tax range of most of the US.
Posted by Renee - Shreveport, LA – March 10, 2008 12:49 PM
This house gets raves, and so do you, Carter. My favorite things about the home (besides the green factor) are the screened porch and the Master Bedroom on the first floor. Wonder about the large North Veranda? Is that part of the green concept? Is there something under that construction that contributes to energy savings? I look forward to your March 23 program. Ah, St. Pat's Day is coming up about the same time. Let's all be wearing green, thinking green, and dreaming of a green Spring.

Hi Folks,
First time on this blog. Love What they have done with the home . And I love the thought of being so close to the water. And most of all that HGTV has made a concerted effort to make this as green as possible.
How can anyone complain about something so well thought out .And free to the winner. Of course there is always Uncle Sam wanting his cut too. But this house is more moderately priced.I suppose there is a dilemna giving away a mansion when many live on a paupers budget like myself. Still it would be wonderful to win such a beautiful Green Home in such a nice location.
Thank You HGTV for your brilliant effort.

Dear Carter,
You are very right in saying it's an eco friendly house. The house is just so soothing when you look at it on the tour. My god it's just a dream. This is why it's dream house because thats what you (all) make happen.
Thanks for making a wounderful house!!
I beleive my son and I would be great for this house. I never owned my own home. I'm a single 35years old and my son is 12years old. I've been just so crazy sending my son to private school and and going back to school my self.

I stand for many things in life and to make changes for a better world. I try every year to win a dream home. But this year really meant alot to me. To be able to sit on the balcony and write, and feel the cool air of the coast and the smell of the salty air. To finally be able to relax and work on my non profit organization. And to Work on my support group I have just start thanks to the Good Lord above. To work on my sub-domain to Teach that the Lord is not a religion but A deep and Loving relationship with God himself. I really with every fiber of my being wanted and needed this. I honestly have tears in my eyes as I watch tonight and it is not me. On top of all the things I have done in the past three years I have done while I was disabled. No I am not a victim, I am a survivor. So I will continue to try for the Home that is green. I think this is a fantastic and outstanding home. I have searched SC and its a beautiful place. I wont give up and even if I dont win the new green Home. God bless you all for doing something so wonderful to change the world for the better.

I didn't see any recycled glass tile in the green home. If you are looking for recycled glass tile, check out the hand-crafted tile at glassrootsofmontana.com. It's made from 100% recycled glass.

Carter,
I am so excited about this house in Hilton Head, I haven't been able to think about anything else especially last night as I stayed up past our usual bedtime to watch the Dream Home special.I could not fall asleep, dreaming of spending a lot of the winter months in our new eco-friendly home in South Carolina.I do my small part up here in the cold cold North to learn to be eco friendly, I have changed almost all light bulbs, I try to use cloth reuseable totes when shopping, I have started to recycle newspapers, and plastic jugs etc, cans as soon as I figure out a space to put them.(we do cans, newspapers, and cardboard at our restaurant)I take any cardboard to work with me and add it to that.
I just love the Hilton Head area, we have friends who winter in Summerville and love to go to charleston and savahna.

Well, here I am 77 years old and everytime I see one of these houses shown, my mouth still waters and the saliva is abundant.Golly, at my age all you can do is wonder about how houses will look like in another 20 years. If the dream and green homes are anything like these new ones, then the future is guarenteed to be "startling" Too bad i won't be around to to see the life of o'rielly but here on St. Pat's day the green is in!!

This house is a-ma-zing. I cannot wait to watch Carter show America every nook of this wonderful "green" haven! I feel that HGTV is taking a crucial step in stressing the importance of being environmentally concious while building a house. My only concern is that some of these green remidies might be too expensive for the average joe, and that it will be easier for most viewers to build in a manner that is not as eco-friendly.
Yes. I also agree with other bloggers that the winner of the last "Dream Home" giveaway did not seem to like her dream come true. At least the emotion levels shown on TV were like that of the Sahara...dry with very little moisture!

Hello, from Tallahassee, Fl.
I love the home! Thank you WHGTV, Mr. Thomasson, Ms. Woodrum & everyone for going GREEN!
I can't wait to see and discover how I can incorporate these eco-friendly technology in my daily life. GREEN is the way to go! We all need to be a better educated consumer. Please continue to educate us in this area.
Thanks for the "Green Home Central" link.
It is very facinating. I will check back again to take notes for future projects.
The view is breath-taking and peaceful!
You've really got me, my friends and family hooked now; and with Carter in the house, I simply can't decide what is more Gorgeous, and Sexy! It would be awsome to meet both.

Hi Carter!! I watch HGTV all the time for ideas for my small place. I would like to make a suggestion to HGTV that might be a winner so if you could please pass this on I would appreciate it not to mention you may get a promotion or bonus if you are lucky.
Instead of building these large million dollar homes why won't HGTV TRY building several homes during a year that people can really afford to remain in due to the tax liability that is never considered that has to be paid? People need simple green homes right now. Also it would increase HGTV's viewer ratings tremendously and don't forget the tax rebates they would receive as a result. Think really GREEN THIS YEAR. Also have ideas for foreclosures which I will not reveal at this time.
For this suggestion you may contact me if you like since I have so many ideas OR you could come and help me install a storage place to reduce my overhead billing for a storage commerical unit and that would be really nice!! Probably a one day job for you. I am even willing to help you or even pay for some of the materials if possible.
If HGTV will look in the past entries they will find my telephone number. Can I come and work with you or HGTV? Multiple talented with outside, inside, planning, design, accounting, managerial, etc. If I had my work done right now I would even do pro bono but just can't.
You are a great guy with a good personality. Thanks.

Carter, I believe for this home to be truely a Green Home, I believe it should have it's own wind power generation/Storage, and Solar Power generation, the Home needs to be totally self sufficient to be truely green

You have done a fantastic job of this Green Home. 4 of my sister-in-laws and I are actually going to Hilton Head May 15th for our girl trip!! So we may get a chance to see it in person. Just to drive by would be wonderful. Will be watching all the action on the new Green Home. HGTV is the best. No matter what time of day there is always something on that is great. Thanks Much

Carter,
After spending the 'winter from hell' in Minnesota, seeing the beautiful South Carolina coast is a wonderful treat- truly a cure for cabin fever! The fact that this fabulous home is 'green' only adds to it's beauty. Thanks for fueling a Minnesota dreamer's thoughts of life in the South. All the best.

Carter, We are trying to go more green with our remodeling efforts. We want to use solid stranded bamboo tongue and groove flooring over our radiant heat floors. We are getting many differing opinions on acceptable installations in Denver, CO climate. We know acclimitization is key however, the differences come between floating (glueing the T&G) or glueing and nailing to the sub floor. What does our green hero think!? Also, what would you recommend for the underlayment. Thanks in advance!

Carter, Carter, Carter...put the word in to HGTV that we want a coastal home in NC. And it needs to come with a boat. Not just any boat either. I want a center console that I can run around as we fish for tuna and king mackerel in the grand Atlantic! My husband and I currently have a little place near Morehead City. Quaint NC beaches...ya'all come!

Carter, the green house not only beautiful but great for our mother earth. Finally someone has taken the first step to helping regular people like myself to have a chance to take part in helping our planet.
As a matter of fact we are a 50 year old couple looking at retirement, that has just bought a house 3 years ago. Looks like we are going to have a mortgage until we kick.
And the worst of it is I just had a car accident which broke my hip and my pelvic in 5 places, recovery is a year and a half. It would we great to sit on one of those verandas looking at water and recover from my accident.
Why have I told you all this? I've watched HGTV for a long time!! and I've done a lot of praying. This would be a dream come true for my husband! So sorry the story is long.
Sincerely,Mona Pack

Green is the Future if we want to save our world. It's amazing that the House just given away by HGTV, was the House of my dreams if I had won the Lottery. Same style, only stucco. This green house, is the house I saw in a magazine, that I'm saving the Money to build. I still have that magazine.

I really wish that you would also educate yourself and others on the difference between being green and Energy Effiecent.
Most of the company products are not green as the manufacturer may not be green. Like do they recycle every item in there company??? That is the true green companies.
DO SOME RESEARCH and find out the truth. I prefer to be energy efficient and change alittle at a time to become more green but do NOT BUY anything until I research the company that says they are green but only not at there highest level..

Great show, you are a looker! Ditos for Jack! The new light bulbs are money savers. They heat up and produce an ample amount of energy. The 100 watt is like using a 26 watt, but you get the high luminous glow without wasting money. The bulb when used on average of 4hrs per day can last 10 yrs. not bad, can save some caching. Cost at Sams 6pkg for 13.00. That tankless water heater rules, our friends have one, never have to worry about the pilot lite. Trout season opens on the 12th. next month, can't wait my daugher and I love it. P.S. they feed on white grubs, and yes we do wear gloves.Nite it's so late. Love the show!!!! kwalters-fcole on a Sabbatical?

Carter...I love what you all have done with creating a green/eco friendly home. BUT..I would love to see HGTV create a home that is friendly to older Americans who have some physical limitations. All of the dream homes so far have stairs and many levels, and are so big.. those of us who could use a good eco friendly home at older ages, really couldn't afford any that you have built. How about designing smaller, eco friendly/green homes that are ONE level, wider hallways, and things easily accessible for older families, empty nesters, couples, etc.. and maintainable financially for a family with a middle income??

Gorgeous, practical and in a great place! Savannah and Paula Deen's cooking on one side and the ocean of HH Island on the other! I wish America would stop building the old way and start re-using furniture, recycling materials into new products, etc. New is not always better - reworked is! Wonderful conservation elements and a wonderful, relaxing atmosphere in every room. God bless all of you who worked on and in that house!

Carter,
I do believe in saving energy when possible, but this push for using fluorescent light bulbs is a bogus deal. They can cost up to 12 x's to produce. In my home they did not last any longer than an regular light bulb and because of the mercury content they are very dangerous to have in your home. How many light bulbs are broken by children? How willing are we to risk the children getting poisoned? On the news a lady called a cleanup crew to clean up after breaking one of these bulbs and they quoted her $2000 for cleanup. How is this saving the environment or economy? I think we need to really think about this alternative.

Carter may be "green" but I cringe watching other shows that destroy perfectly good sinks, appliances, baths, etc. Our landfills are already overflowing and Carter asks his viewers to recycle but what about HGTV shows? How about showing a good image instead of showing hosts get so much fun out of destruction? I can't help feeling HGTV is being hypocritical. This is from a big fan so please understand that this is a sincere critque. Thank you.

WOW, What an awesome idea, building a Ecofriendly
"Green House". This is the beginning of a new and
better era of homes and what better way to show
the Country (World)how it can be done. It is
gorgeous and in a great location, anyone fortunate enough to win this unique house will
not only help the environment but set a great
example of how to "GO GREEN", even if its a little bit at a time. I also think that maybe HGTV might think about getting foreclosure houses
or empty houses and re-doing them, just the average size homes and giving those away when
you can, so that the average homeowner/family
can afford it. Thank you for all you do and for
this opportunity to win this magnificent house.

I love the green home. From the tours, everything about it is fantastic, especially the location. I live in Minnesota (northern) and we had the winter from hell. I would love tho live in this area. (I am not a native Minnesotan). Thanks for this green home and by the way I love your show.

OK,I AGREE WITH MY DAUGHTER AND APPARENTLY EVERYONE ELSE CARTER YOU ARE THE BOMB,AESTHETICALLY PLEASING AND FUNCTIONAL TOO.I LOVE THE SHOW AND HGTV IN GENERAL EXCEPT I WOULD NEVER GET ANYTHING DONE FOR WATCHING THE SHOWS.I WOULD LIKE TO ADD THAT AT THE RIPE OLD AGE OF 55 I AM THINKING WAY SMALLER FOR RETIREMENT,PERHAPS ONE OF THE HURRICAINE HOUSES THAT WERE NOT SO EASY ON THE BUDGET OR HANDICAP FRIENDLY.ALONG THOSE LINES BUT NOT 150,OOO OR MORE DOLLARS.I AM A PROFESSIONAL AND MAKE A GOOD WAGE BUT FAMILY OBLIGATIONS ARE KEEPING ME OUT OF THE RICH AND INDEPENDANTLY WEALTHY CATAGORY.A 3MONTH HOSPITALIZATION AND YEAR OUT OF WORK DID NOT HELP THINGS.SO CAN WE HAVE SOME PROFESSIONAL HELP OUT HERE!THERE ARE MORE OF US THAT DO NOT HAVE UNLIMITED MONIES TO WORK WITH AND IT WOULD BE SO MUCH MORE FUN TO DREAM FOR A POSSIBILITY INSTEAD OF JUST DREAMING OF THE LOTTERY.THANKS I'LL KEEP WATCHING JUST IN CASE.

carter....i love the table that you made for the green house...and well i would love to have one as well...now the odds of me winning the house to win your table isnt likely....even though ive been entering to win practically every day...
any chance that you could post a blue print of the table for diy people....although having one made from you would be a treat...
sincerely

Great house, and if I win, I'll cook you a special dinner, it will be my surprise to you. Love the fact that it's not a big mansion and maybe within my means so I could actually live there. thanks for a great design and location

This home is so awesome. I actually like it better than the larger dream homes, and the fact that it is eco-friendly makes it even better. We can only hope to win!

Dear Carter, HGTV Staff, Crew, and all sponsoring associates of HGTV's Green Home 2008: Humanity, humbly and with MUCH GRATITUDE, THANKS YOU for your exception effort and LIFE-GIVING creation here. This home is masterful! A charming, enchanting, win-win use of creative energy that speaks directly to the very need, and eternal heart of the human connection. Just as I typed that last sentence, the pit of my stomach got that all to rare feeling of butterflies.. Let the winds of heaven dance! Fabulous work by all!!! THANK YOU!

Hello Carter:
The house is beautiful. The only thing is that
I live in Puerto Rico and I don't understand why
having HGTV such a big audience in Puerto Rico, we are not allowed to enter the sweeptakes. I personally changed my antenna provider a couple of years ago only because they were not offering HGTV. Can somebody answer me why?

As a health care professional and former Girl Scout leader, I am extremly happy to see HGTV promote preservation of the environment in the building of the Green house. I was always taught to leave a place (our world) as good or better than you find it, and I believe this to be true. The house is so inviting yet not over powering. Best of luck to all who enter and the lucky winner. 152099

Hi Carter,
I like you, HGTV, your Green House! I would like to win this awesome house, but I am in Canada. Can I play?

At age 80 yrs. one thing throughout those years has bothered me. When someone remodels (which means getting rid of an appliance that still works but is out of date) they throw the old into the trash. For the GREEN effect, couldn't they altar the old and give it to the poor? Thank you.

I think the Green House is ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!After 39 years of teaching elementary school I have 3 dreams when I retire. I want to read a lot of books, live in a cottage by the water, and do something to make the world a better place. I am a Southern girl from Alabama and have spent many vacations in Hilton Head, loving every minute. Even if I don't win the Green House, in my heart I'm going to Carolina. Thank you for your beautiful contribution to saving our Earth.
