We're finally able to release the details about the first HGTV Green Home! The home is in Tradition Hilton Head, a 5,300-acre master-planned community near Hilton Head Island, S.C. The location is near miles of popular beaches and an eco-friendly golf course!
House planner Jack Thomasson says the home will take advantage of the latest green-building materials and techniques and is "designed to demonstrate that you don't have to be extreme to be green.” And interior decorator Linda Woodrum will use eco-friendly products and materials throughout the home.
Keep checking back for updates on the home's construction, and look for a full online tour coming next March, with 360-degree images of every part of the house similar to the HGTV Dream Home tour.
You'll be able to enter for a chance to win the home starting March 21, 2008. And watch the HGTV Green Home 2008 special on HGTV March 23, 2008, at 9pm e/p for a tour of the home.

This house looks so quiant and sirene. I love it. My type of home. I can wait to see it come together. My dream home is the Keys home, but I love the idea of the green home and I think it is right up our alley too. I know it will be beautiful and will love it.

I'm so anxious to learn more about the green house. It seems to me that eco-friendly materials are always considerably more expensive. I want to learn how they keep the costs in line and still stay "green"

Way to go, HGTV! Not only excited to have the opportunity to explore the home & dream, but hope to learn a lot more about green technology. Give us more data!!

It's great to know that the Green Home will be in such a beautiful location.
I was confused as to wether the Green Home was the Dream Home (only 1 home) but now I know there are two seperate homes HGTV will be giving away. This is so wonderful!
It's nice to know there are companies out there with such big hearts that willing to give and give instead of get and get.
Thank you HGTV! Thank You!

I wish I could just get someone to help me get my home ready to sell. I am really way over my head in this project. I work full time, raising a fifteen yr old grandson, husband is away on a ship, and I see so much I want to do, but at age fifty seven it is not as easy as it once was. Ive gone thru four major surgeries, losing my hips, my husband had quadruple by pass and mechanical valve replacing his aorta valve because it was leaking. It is truthfully spoken . I am way over my head in trying to remodel and make this home appealing to sell. anyone out there who can help? I see so many who are so fortunate to get help. I guess it runs out before it reaches folks like me.
Merry CHristmas to all and to all A VERY BLESSED NIGHT>

Kudos and many thanks for creating a GREEN home! I have been collecting links for, eventually, building/remodeling my own green home and I would like to share one amazing supplier. I confess I have yet to do business with them yet their offerings are fabulous including things like vegetable based blown in insulation! I emplore the Green Dream Team to explore the products offered by this company.

Congratulations HGTV.. You have masterminded a fabulous, environmentally friendly home located in one of the most beautiful parts of our nation - it doesn't get an better than this!! The lucky winner of this home is definitely getting a true gem.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for the priceless information you provide on a variety of your programs about "going green". I, along with the rest of my HGTV watching friends, had no idea how simple and cost effective it is to use eco-friendly products! You have taught us many valuable lessons and given us the tools to do our part in making this a better nation to live in - Thank you. Susan H

The area looks so perfect and beautiful. And, it is a great testiment to show how HGTV is going green. I hope I'm the lucky winner.

I love the eco-friendly green home idea, but you should do some research on the developements that you choose to place these homes.Traditions in South Carolina had no problem digging as many retention ponds as possible and altering wetlands which effect a natural tributary which feeds the New River from Ridgeland to Hardeeville S.C. This isnt very ECO-FRIENDLY!
Posted by Steve Sanders – December 28, 2007 12:36 AM
What about green power, rainwater collection, etc? Looks like a good start- is there more with reducing the carbon footprint of this house and development?
Posted by Anonymous – December 28, 2007 11:04 AM
I am very excited about the green home and would love to know more about the contest. When the dates are going to be and when you are going to show the green home the way you showed the other dream home.
Thank You So Much,

Just watched the video clip for the "Green Home." It should be a nice home, and I'd love to win it; however, this video is a bit misleading. Traditions is not on the water as the video would make you believe. Its closer to Bluffton and pretty close to I-95. I'd much rather see some video that is more representative of what is actually there than videos of Sea Pines, etc. that are much further away.
Aside from this bit of grumble, it looks great.
Posted by Max – December 30, 2007 11:05 AM
I hope they will giveaway the house to those who really need it and not those who already have good job, a house, car or a good retirement.Usually those people who always win.
Posted by olive – December 30, 2007 12:29 PM
Finally a True Green home that hopefully will be a cost effective model plan to build communities based on.
I would love to win and be honored to live in this home or the Islamorada 2008 HGTV Dream home.Being in the keys and with limited fresh water supplies, do you use water conservation techniques in that home also?

Tonight is the first I have heard of the Green Home and I think this is a wonderful idea for HGTV. I have been so much more involved in the eco-home environment here lately and think this will be a great giveaway for someone. We (everyone) really needs to think about our planet earth, for it is rapidly changing, and every little help from each person will emprove everyone's way of living. The house looks very comfortable and I really like the community environment, where families can come together and make up a grand community.

Thank you for making this environment a healthier place for all of us! We have found our way to GREEN via allergies and asthma. Please, let all who read truly understand that what HGTV is doing means much more than a new house. Thank you!!!

Instead of giving away homes to the rich, whom already have many homes, how about going to the urban areas and building homes for the poor. Such a waste of money for those who already have a lot.

Thank you HGTV for helping show America we too can take charge of our surroundings! In our little country area in Texas there is the beginning a "Wind Farm" to help support our country with clean, more effecient energy! This first phase is installing 100 wind turbines on our flat east plains area. It will be so enjoyable and helpful to watch and learn as you continue with your educational programs concerning GREEN! The person who wins this home will truly have the rest of us green with envy! Thanks! Linda

I believe that this house will truely revolutionize the way people think about biulding their houses. I just hope that hgtv takes into consideration that the USA's economy is slow and diminishing for some people, and they have a plan for providing money for the winner so that they may live in the house insted of having to sell it. I know that this will be one(if not the best home) hgtv has ever built. Thank you sorry for any spelling errors

I am pleased to see HGTV building a "green home" since this kind of building is overdue for all of us. Everyone trying it will help to bring the costs down for all of us hopefully. I am wondering however is the location of the home conducive to "green" living or will it involve a 20 mile drive to the grocery store or a restaurant? can everyday living be done by walking or biking? golf courses are nice enough but not having to get in the car for everything is better.

We are trying hard to live green every day in little ways but how fantastic to offer a Green HOME! It is wonderful to see the extravagent homes that are offered by HGTV but even more fabulous to know that the environment is playing a large role in everyones thoughts...hopefully it will encourage more earth friendly living worldwide! Thumbs up HGTV!

I am thrilled at the possibility of a green home.
I know that they are more expensive to build, but once you have, much more economical to sustain. As heating, transportation, and food prices rise I am concerned about being able to be self sufficient and still be a responsible citizen.

Well being from SC, I would love to be able to go back, I havn't been home in many yrs. The house looks lovely and the homesite of Traditions is amazing. I absolutely love the fact that the whole community is green. What a fabulous design and idea. I hope that more developers will take notice. I can just imagine sitting on my front porch, or riding a bike around town. Sounds absolutely enchanting. Thanks HGTV for a true dream home for those who are eco-friendly.

I just received certification to be a Green Real Estate Broker in South Carolina. Building green saves you money in the long run and it is not much more expensive than a traditional build. I am happy to see green awareness reaching our area.

I would love to win a green home. It would be in a nice up and growing community in south carolina. I would love to have a house down there. The weather is not that bad. JUST to have a house would be good. I'm only 25 but that would be a great age to start to be a homeowner. I can call a house my home and be HAPPY. I can only wait to see and hope and pray that maybe I will get picked. But whoever gets it would be the happiest person ever. They wouldnt have to worry about anything but taxes.
PS I will be keeping my fingers crossed.

You guys have really gone and done it now! Green Home in my favorite part of the country, the Low Country between Savannah (the 1st planned new city in America) and Hilton Head Island. Good food, southern hospitality, laid back lifestyle and now it's "GREEN". Yea! I can't wait to enter the contest. I want this house!!

This has nothing to do with the current Green Home you are constructing, but I saw a Development in GA last weekend that might interest be of interest to you for a future Green Home or Dream Home. They are still selling off lots to builders for the future Phases. The web address is LakeArrowheadGA.com. Check it out. You could build a great house with the land prices being so very low. Just a thought from a "fan"

This Green Home is definitely my idea of a dream home... just one question. Tradition HH says it's a "retirement" community. Does that mean there is an age limit for the contest?
Posted by Kelly – January 10, 2008 2:53 PM
Tradition is near about 10 miles west of Hilton Head Island it is not on Hilton Head. Tradition is a planned community. I have been to Tradition and this will be a beautiful community once it is completed. Once this green home is completed I will be visiting it.

After losing my life savings to a developer just another 3 miles inland, and being considered too old for employment, if I could win the HGTV green home it would provide me and my dog a new lease on life. As I understand the program, this house could be retained by the winner instead of just walking through a house you know you cannot keep. Enjoyed my visits to Hilton Head while waiting for my other house to be finished, and at my age, and unemployed, I cannot save the necessary funds to purchase another development home. It looks like there are several churches to choose from in the area. Thank You HGTV for initiating the "green home" concept! -

If I am ever blessed with a home, I would make sure that it had all the "green" amenities. Protecting our planet is so vitally important, and education is just the beginning, after you are educated about our planetary problems, you must do your part to solve them. We all must do our parts.

Does anyone know how far this home is from the ocean and if it is in a retirement community? I kind of got that idea from looking at their website. Thought it was right on the beach at first, but then realized that was a retention pond, probably manmade, in the pictures. Thanks and God Bless!

The house may be "green" and it looks absolutely beautiful.... but the beaches are 40 minutes away often with heavy traffic to Hilton Head Island. They need to be more honest about the location. It is much closer to a small town called Hardeeville and they changed the name to play in the Hilton Head fame.

It is important for people to understand that Tradition Hilton Head is located 29 miles inland from Hilton Head. It is not even in the same county as Hilton Head. I would have expected HGTV to have done a little more homework before signing on to a borderline deceptive ad campaign. Also, don't expect too much from the overall development. Since it's inception in 2007, Tradition only has one family living there. Approach with caution. The green home is great, but in this case it could actually be too perfect to be true.

Visited today and was very disappointed. Cost $20.00 per adult, half of which goes to the United Way. My issues are not with the price or the house. The house was very nice but the volunteers staffing the house could not answer a single question. The way the tour is set up is like going to a museum, but no one could answer any questions, some of which seemed very basic. For example, they could not tell me where the hot water heater is located. Visitng this house is no different than looking at any model home. You do not get to see anything "behind the scenes" and you can't touch anything except the handrail going upstairs. I was hoping to see behind the walls, the mechanicals, etc. I wouldn't do it again.

I am a single mother of 2 teenage boys in Milwaukee. We all suffer from severe chronic migraines and I can't help but wonder if it is our environment or the house we live in. I pray God will have a bigger plan for us and put us in the Green Home. I would even build a green house and give back to the community if we are so blessed. April 5th is my 20 yr annivarsary of working as a single mom and in December I turn 40. I believe in miracles and this would be a pinnacle year for our family! We truly deserve this for more reasons than I've mentioned.

Wow! I am so happy to see the green lifestyle become more main stream. Now people won't think that I am the 'crazy lady' who recycles everything. Let's continue to protect the future of our earth. Good job HGTV!

HGTV, you have done it again. This home captures the environment of the low county. What an awesome view of the water and sunset. What an honor and privalege it would be to win and live in the beautiful "Green Home" and live the "Life of Riley".
P.S. - Since retiring, my wife and I throughly enjoy the many wonderful programs on HGTV and learn so many cost saving ideas on how to fix up our home.

Wow!!! The HGTV Green Home is just as much a Dream Home. It's beautiful...and hopefully will grow the interest of America in eco-friendly homes. Thanks HGTV!!!

Love the home. Love the fact that it is not a huge mansion! Green living is the way to go,and to save our planet for the next generations.
We have grandchildren that we would leave our planet to. Anything we can all do in our own lives to protect the environment, and improve the damage already done....we all need to do. The ideas used in this home, are something we can all do! Would love to retire to this home!

I tihkn this is kinda misleading just so you all know the house is not ON Hilton Head Island and its really not that close to it.... I live on the island the Traditions is about 40 minutes away on the outskirts of bluffton. Its really in the middle of nowhere but i guess they dont wanna tell you that.

I recall Vic Cook from the Extreme homes series (hgtv,2003)who lives in Indiana, conceived and built the "giant".The giant provides for an off-the-grid lifestyle, and offers many of the eco-friendly principles found in the green home project. When I first saw the giant on television I felt that this would be the way of the future. That show 5 years ago changed my life, because I have always embraced the reduce, reuse, recycle mantra. After seeing Mr. Cooks' "giant" on hgtv I was convinced that this way of living is for me, and judging by the amount of interst in the growing green movement I see am not alone. So to all my fellow green heads out there I encourage you to check out Vic Cooks "the giant"(episode EXT-401)
and also drop by his web site @ giantearthship.com
to become informed and inspired to discover the possibilties of this brave new world! see you all soon in Tradition HH

Being a devoted HGTV fan as well as a devoted green fan. Both take time and commitment. Keep up the great ideas and your fabulous service to all your devoted fans.

The winner of the amazing green home is only days away from being chosen! Hopefully, the lucky recipient will be both truly deserving of the prize and sincere in his appreciation of a green home; for long after the initial media attention dissipates, there will be interest in the home, and the winner. If the fortunate owner takes good care of the property, and himself, by actually living a green life, then the intended HGTV mission statement about the house will continue to have a positive influence on people. Maybe South Carolina can become the next Oregon, a state with a great number of its populace living green. On a personal note, I hope I’m the winner because I’m in dire need of a home. As a victim of abuse, I have suddenly found myself in a situation in which I am soon to be homeless. My husband strangled me November, 30 2007. Consequently, he was removed from our military residence, and I have worked to get a divorce. The court has allowed my two young sons and me to live where I please, but we really have no place to go. We will have to stay with relatives in Maryland until I can afford a place for us to live. The Hilton Head HGTV home would be perfect for us for a number of reasons, ranging from dreamy to practical; including the fact that I’ve been doing my best to live greenly for years.
