A tattoo moms like.

Posted by etipton – July 19, 2008 5:46 PM

After having more children at a park than adults, a mom invented these helpful temporary tattoos. As a mom, I know how easy it is to turn around, and your child is no where in sight. My daughter is usually under the clothing rack, but it doesn't make it any less scary those few seconds. I worry more in certain places than in others, and I always worry more when I'm out-numbered. Our Zoo has a poorly designed play area. Unless you are climbing around the structure with them, there is no way you can keep your eyes on them when they are playing. I only have one child, but if I had two or three, I would be terrified there. Those situations are a good time to use SafetyTat. It was designed by a mother with three children. The SafetyTat is a fun and colorful kids temporary tattoo that’s personalized with your cell phone number. When applied to the arm of your child or loved one, SafetyTat provides an immediate, highly-visible form of identification that stays in place even when wet and lasts for one to five days. Even better than just your cell phone number, you can buy tattoos with important medical information. I was in a care-giving situation a few weeks ago where it would have been very beneficial for me to know a particular child was autistic. How nice would it be to slap on a tattoo that said "my child is allergic to peanuts" before you send him off to camp or Bible School? Safety Tats are priced around $20 for 30. nuts.jpg

Fire woman, you're to blame.

Posted by etipton – September 13, 2007 2:22 PM

If you have a house fire, one of the hardest things to do is replace all of your important documents. Many times you need to be able to prove who you are, and if everything you own was destroyed that is nearly impossible. A fire safe is an inexpensive way to protect passports, birth certificates, bonds and other valuables from water and fire damage. Most of these safes protect paper up to 1550°F during a fire for 30 minutes and helps keep them safe from water damage. Safes start around $40.

Stop, drop and roll.

Posted by etipton – September 11, 2007 8:24 PM

No one plans to have a house fire, but by having a safety plan in place you are more prepared if disaster strikes. Growing up, our plan was to meet by the mailbox. It would be horrible to run back into a burning house looking for someone who was already safe outside. Another good aspect of a safety plan is a fire ladder. Our house is on one level, so we are not too high to jump out a window if necessary. If you live in a multi-story house, you need an escape ladder. There are many different styles and options, depending on the height you need. Prices start around $35.

Sound the alarm.

Posted by etipton – September 11, 2007 11:02 AM

Our smoke detectors have been going off a lot lately. High temperatures can shorten battery life, so I'm not sure if it is the hot weather or my cooking that has been sounding the alarm. Why is it that the batteries in a smoke detector always die around 4 a.m.? Whenever the smoke or carbon monoxide detector sounds, you have to attend to it and make sure nothing is wrong. After the 4 a.m. sound-off, my candle got a little too smoky the other night and set it off again. When I changed the battery I noticed a little spot that had room to write the date. Apparently you are supposed to replace smoke detectors every 10 years. I did not know that.

Smoke detectors are not very expensive, and you should have more than one in your home. There should be, at a minimum, one installed on every floor of your home. It is best to place them near the bedrooms, and if you are a heavy sleeper, maybe even inside each bedroom. It is also helpful to have a smoke detector in the kitchen, laundry room, garage and in stairwells. These are places that have increased fire risk. If you cannot afford a smoke detector, most fire stations have some for free or at a reduced cost. So whether you need additional detectors, or it is time to replace yours, basic smoke detectors start around $5.

Safe sounds.

Posted by etipton – September 10, 2007 10:41 AM

They have recently discovered that kids don't respond as well to traditional smoke detectors. You may have noticed this if your child uses a beeping alarm clock. This Vocal Smoke Alarm uses three different alarms to awaken your child, and since you can record the audio message in your voice, your child will hear his name spoken in a recognizable tone. The Vocal Smoke Alarm includes an alarm tone, a vocal message, and a bright light ring that illuminates during drills. In case of an alarm, your child is three times more likely to respond. Priced less than $40.

Pool Safety

Posted by etipton – August 3, 2007 11:29 AM

If you have a swimming pool and also have children, you need to think about investing in a pool alarm. The Safety Turtle system has a base unit and a wristband for children, adults, or pets. It sends out an alarm when the wristband gets too close to the base unit. The Pool Eye pool alarm alerts you if anything heavier than 15 pounds falls in the pool. It is a good idea to evaluate your pool situation and find the alarm that works best for your environment. Most systems are priced less than $300.

It will leave you hearing bells.

Posted by etipton – June 14, 2007 9:34 PM

Picture this. It is raining, and I run to my friend's door with baby in tow. I can see her car in the garage. I know she is home. I ring the doorbell, but there is no answer. After digging in my black-hole-of-a-purse, I find my cell phone and give her a call. They are upstairs in the bonus room and can not hear the doorbell. We are soaked, and I am more than a little annoyed. I know she is not the only one with this problem. The other day I ran across the Extend-A-Chime. The Extend-A-Chime expands an existing wired doorbell, allowing it to be heard in any part of the home. The transmitter connects onto the low-voltage screws in the existing doorbell. Then, plug the doorbell receiver into any 110V electrical outlet. You can hear the doorbell in all parts of the home - basement, second floor, bonus room or the attic. It has different sounds for the front and back doors, and an operating range of up to 150 feet. Priced less than $50.

Recharge on the go.

Posted by etipton – June 1, 2007 10:05 AM

Why is it that you forget to charge you cell phone or the battery dies at the worst possible moment? It is when you are waiting for that important call, or have a hundred places to go. Extra batteries are very expensive, and if you could remember to charge your phone you usually wouldn't need a battery in the first place. With Energizer's Energi To Go, you can charge your phone using AA batteries. It charges your phone for up to 10 hours on two AA batteries. Make sure you get the version that is compatible with your brand of phone. Priced less than $20.

Let there be light.

Posted by etipton – May 30, 2007 9:30 AM

Candles provide wonderful ambiance, but they are inherently dangerous. Unattended candles at a friend’s house dripped from the mantle all the way down to the hearth in a stalagtite fashion. Luckily, a messy clean-up was all that happened. There could have been a fire. It is shocking to wake up or come home, and realize a candle was left burning. I have a small child, and she is attracted to candles like a moth to a flame. Vessel has created a rechargeable, LCD battery-operated candle called the Candela. It offers 8 hours of run-time after a full charge, safe for indoor and outdoor use, safe to the touch, and it comes on automatically when the power goes out. According to their website, they are more economical than votive candles. They also do not leave the soot stain on ceilings you get from traditional candles. The rechargeable batteries are replaceable. Two Candelas are priced under $50. They sell covers to add color for under $5. candela%201.jpg candela%202.jpg candela%203.jpg There is also a fun, colorful version called the Candloo. It is targeted more towards children. Circle of Trust

Posted by etipton – May 25, 2007 9:37 AM

When I was a child, they had all these cartoons with the products of the future. I mean, I am really shocked we do not live on the moon and drive flying cars like we saw on The Jetson’s.. There are a few things that did come to market: computers, cell phones, tiny cameras and these really neat biometric door locks.
These locks are perfect if your kids or roommates are always forgetting their keys. You can give the babysitter or housekeeper access to your home, but still want the ability to keep them out without going through the cost and trouble of changing the locks. Most versions of the fingerprint locks hold 15 or more different users. That should allow for key employees, pet sitters, nannies, preferred family members and house guests to all have a different code. Now if they would just get the flying car that runs on water on the market, we will be set. Starting at $249.

A great gift for new graduates.

Posted by etipton – May 15, 2007 8:57 AM

It is spring, and it is the time of year your mailbox is full of graduation announcements. You wonder what you can send the grad that is different, usable and inexpensive. Many of our new graduates will be moving away from home, and moving away from mom and dad. Sometimes money gets tight, or they get forgetful. Next thing they know, they are out of gas. The gas containers available at gas stations are expensive, and not very easy to use. They also are too bulky to store in your trunk. If you ever run out of gas again, you have to purchase another one. Check out Gas-O-Haul. It is a flat-storing container that holds one gallon of gas. Priced under $10. gas%20o%20haul.jpg
