Muddle through

Posted by etipton – September 16, 2008 6:00 AM

It wasn't that long ago when it was only people from Cuba or the Caribbean who had heard of exotic drinks like Mojitos. Now they are served about everywhere. Make your own Mojitos at home with a Muddler. The Muddler is used to crush limes, releasing oils from the fruit's rind. This is a nice addition to your bar or kitchen. The Muddler is priced around $15.

This is really helpful when feeding a crowd, or converting a bulk recipe to individual-sized servings. The Martha Stewart Collection Magnetic Recipe Divider is priced around $10.

Souper dinners.

Posted by etipton – July 28, 2008 10:42 AM

I am so excited that this plate is available again! One of my favorite things about fall is pulling out the crock pot and making soup. Nothing goes better with soups than grilled cheese sandwiches. With colder weather right around the corner, be prepared with these cute soup and sandwich plates. These plates are perfect for eating away from the table. (Yes, there are nights we eat in front of the television set – I'm sure we aren't the only family watching Seinfeld.) Safe for use in the oven, microwave and dishwasher, the simple white serving pieces are always ready for those relaxed, rainy-day meals. Imported. The Soup and Sandwich Plate is priced around $30 for a set of two.

I want candy!

Posted by etipton – June 19, 2008 4:49 PM

I want this Chocolate Spatula Thermometer. No, not because I make a lot of candy, but because when I do make candy, I usually do a really bad job with it. This gadget lets you easily keep track of the temperature of your melted chocolate. If chocolate gets too hot, it gets gritty, so this is wonderful. The thermometer alone would be enough, but then you also get a really nice spatula that is perfect to scrape that last bit of chocolate out of the pot. I can't wait for my thermometer to arrive. The Chocolate Spatula Thermometer is priced less than $20.

Corny gadgets.

Posted by etipton – June 16, 2008 8:01 AM

As a child, every year my grandmother and great-aunt would get a bushel of corn, shuck, strip, cook, and freeze the corn for use in the winter. It was delicious. Besides shucking the corn, the most time intensive part was removing the corn from the cob. Leave it to the great folks at OXO to build a better mousetrap in the world of corn shucking. The OXO Good Grips Corn Stripper is perfect for people with teeth difficulties, small children or just prefer corn off the cob. The stainless steel blade has a slight arch designed to fit neatly around the cob as it cuts. A half cup capacity container captures the removed stripped kernels of approximately one full cob. The convenient top opening allows you to easily pour out the collected kernels, and the entire container of the food preparation helper separates for simple cleaning. Now for the best part, it is even dishwasher safe! The OXO Good Grips Corn Stripper is priced around $10.

Hook, line and sinker

Posted by etipton – April 24, 2008 7:16 AM

Have you seen the Vapor colors from Kohler? According to their website, the Vapour colors, depending on the light and the surrounding materials and finishes, change from light to dark in color intensity. Vapour colors look like the blue of earth from space, the oranges and pinks of the sunrise or sunset, the purple of dusk, or greens and blues of the shallows in the Caribbean and change colors like how they blend and how they transform when a cloud passes overhead.
The Vapour Green Cape Dory tile-in kitchen sink is priced around $400.

Sili Twists are made of silicone coated steel wire, and that keeps them safely tied around your asparagus or stuffed pork tenderloin. They are heat resistant up to 570 degrees Farenheit. Great for the oven, but not for the grill. You can also use them around the house for other improvement projects. Priced around $15 for six.

Kitchen Wars

Posted by etipton – April 9, 2008 10:09 PM

Of all the dangerous things in the kitchen, I never worried about cans of food. That is until I got into a nasty altercation with one, and ended up in the emergency room. This never would have happened if I had stayed out of the kitchen to begin with. I asked for some worker's comp or disability leave, but my family will not allow me to give up dinner duty. For the good of everyone at my house, this year I have put this OXO can opener on my Mother's Day wish list. The OXO Smooth Edge Can Opener can open any sized can while eliminating sharp edges. It cuts the side of the can, below the can edge, leaving no sharp edges on the can or lid. Priced around $20 (which is much less expensive than my emergency room visit.)

Sideswiped

Posted by etipton – March 6, 2008 12:53 PM

No one wants to get sideswiped when driving, but a sideswipe can be a great thing if it is this plastic attachment for your mixer! I absolutely love my Kitchenaid mixer, but I do hate stopping it in the middle of mixing, and scraping the sides of the bowl. It is messy, and if I wanted to mix the batter by hand, I would not have put it in the mixer to begin with. The Sideswipe ends that! The SideSwipe attaches to the mixer blades to fill the void between the blade and the bowl. It fits most KitchenAid stand mixers, the Hamilton Beach Eclectrics stand mixer, and the Cuisinart Stand Mixer line. There are new options coming out this summer, but hey, it will fit my mixer, so I'm happy. Priced around $25.

Cupcake Update.

Posted by etipton – February 7, 2008 6:57 AM

Cupcakes have not lost any popularity since I featured them in my blog last Spring. With Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day and Easter coming up in the next few weeks, I am sure there will be plenty of cupcakes around. The Wilton company now has a giant three-dimensional cupcake-shaped cake pan. Priced less than $30.
cupcake%20cake.jpg

One of my most popular featured items from the cupcake post is the Cupcake Courier. You can view that post here. We have an update from Jennifer Gunn, inventor of the product. Target has decided to give the Cupcake Courier a trial run at 1,100 of their stores nationwide. To start out, they're carrying the blue and pink models, and retailing them for $24.99. They can be found in their "As Seen On TV" section, which is usually at the end of an aisle near the bakeware area. She also thinks they will be available at Target.com. If you can not find wait until then, you can still order them from Jennifer at www.cupcakecourier.com.

The Create n Celebrate Pull Apart Cupcake Mold is another neat cupcake product now available. You bake the cupcakes. You arrange the pattern, and then you decorate. It doesn't get much easier than that! This is a turtle, but it is also available in car, butterfly, flower basket, alligator, wreath, penguin and train from Roshco. With the Pull Apart Cupcake Mold, you get the ease of cupcakes, but still have the look of a cake. The FDA approved food-grade silicone is guaranteed oven-safe to 500° F. The mold has a permanent, quick-release, non-stick surface, and is refrigerator, freezer, microwave, oven and metal utensil safe. Priced less than $20.

Easy jar opener.

Posted by etipton – January 17, 2008 12:25 PM

My parents got me the strangest Christmas gift this year. They showed it to me, and then asked me to guess what it was. I didn't have a clue, but it was a jar opener. Lee Valley developed this opener that releases the vacuum inside the jar. Once you release the vacuum, the jar lid opens easily. The only downside is that it can bend the lid a bit, making the jar hard to close later. I am more careful with a jar of pickles that might sit in the refrigerator for months than say a jar of salsa that might get consumed in one sitting. I love it, and use the jar opener all the time. With this, I no longer am banging jars against the counter, asking my husband to loosen the lid, or trying to pop the vacuum with a knife. Thanks, Mom and Dad!Priced less than $10.

Rolla Roaster of love.

Posted by etipton – September 15, 2007 9:12 AM

This weekend it felt like fall. There was a cool breeze, and it felt wonderful outside. Our group of friends decided to roast marshmallows with the kids. There were 11 kids under the age of five, so that really makes for an adventure. We hadn’t planned ahead. It was a more spur-of-the-minute idea, so we didn’t have very good sticks available. Everything worked out fine, but I wish I had the Rolla Roaster my mom told me about. It is a telescoping stainless steel fork used to cook hot dogs, marshmallows or anything else you usually cook on a stick. The fork telescopes from 12" long for backyard BBQs to 42" inches long for campfire cooking. The beautifully crafted wooden handle never overheats. The fork is perfect for hot dogs, marshmallows, s’mores, toasted buns and more! The Rolla Roaster now comes in 9 different handle colors. With Christmas just around the corner, order an extra set to give as a gift. I'm betting your recipient doesn't already have this. Two Rolla Roasters included per set. Priced at $12.00 per set of two.

Sound the alarm.

Posted by etipton – September 11, 2007 11:02 AM

Our smoke detectors have been going off a lot lately. High temperatures can shorten battery life, so I'm not sure if it is the hot weather or my cooking that has been sounding the alarm. Why is it that the batteries in a smoke detector always die around 4 a.m.? Whenever the smoke or carbon monoxide detector sounds, you have to attend to it and make sure nothing is wrong. After the 4 a.m. sound-off, my candle got a little too smoky the other night and set it off again. When I changed the battery I noticed a little spot that had room to write the date. Apparently you are supposed to replace smoke detectors every 10 years. I did not know that.

Smoke detectors are not very expensive, and you should have more than one in your home. There should be, at a minimum, one installed on every floor of your home. It is best to place them near the bedrooms, and if you are a heavy sleeper, maybe even inside each bedroom. It is also helpful to have a smoke detector in the kitchen, laundry room, garage and in stairwells. These are places that have increased fire risk. If you cannot afford a smoke detector, most fire stations have some for free or at a reduced cost. So whether you need additional detectors, or it is time to replace yours, basic smoke detectors start around $5.
