Laptop Lunchbox

Posted by etipton – September 9, 2008 9:05 AM

My sister sent me this link a few weeks ago. Her daughter takes her lunch to school every day, and my sister got tired of using plastic bags and other disposable products. Also, after many years of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, my niece was ready to try a few new things for lunch. This product is the Laptop Lunch lunchbox. Laptop Lunches are American-style bento boxes designed to help families pack nutritious, environment-friendly lunches for school, work, and travel. The Laptop Lunch lunchbox kit includes the Laptop Lunch insulated carrying case, water bottle, the Laptop Lunch Bento Box with all inner containers and utensils, and one copy of The Laptop Lunch User's Guide. The Laptop Lunch lunchbox is reusable, recyclable, and dishwasher safe. The lunchboxes also contain no harmful phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA), or lead. The Laptop Lunch lunchbox is priced around $35.

Shower Time

Posted by etipton – August 29, 2008 9:17 PM

I know this is supposed to help conserve water, but I think it is better for keeping kids on track in the morning. The timer sticks on the shower wall. Set it when your first get in and the sand runs out in five minutes. If you need more time, flip it over for another five minutes. In the morning it is easy to lose track of time. You aren't quite awake, and next thing you know thirty minutes has passed. The timer helps you save water, and helps you keep better track of your time. The shower timer is priced around $5.

Hook, line and sinker

Posted by etipton – April 24, 2008 7:16 AM

Have you seen the Vapor colors from Kohler? According to their website, the Vapour colors, depending on the light and the surrounding materials and finishes, change from light to dark in color intensity. Vapour colors look like the blue of earth from space, the oranges and pinks of the sunrise or sunset, the purple of dusk, or greens and blues of the shallows in the Caribbean and change colors like how they blend and how they transform when a cloud passes overhead.
The Vapour Green Cape Dory tile-in kitchen sink is priced around $400.

Get your dog involved.

Posted by etipton – April 23, 2008 7:15 AM

I was unaware that you could buy environmentally-friendly toys for you dog, but you can. One product is the Planet Dog Orbe Tuff RecycleBall. It is made out of leftover material and lots of love. Planet Dog's recycleToys are made from regrind, which is first-quality material that would otherwise be thrown away. It is extremely durable, so if your dog destroys every toy you buy immediately, this one should last a few months. Orbee-Tuff is a “thermo plastic elastimer” that is engineered specifically to become one of the most durable, pliable, buoyant and bouncy dog toys on the market. To ensure dogs love the smell as much as the feel, each Orbee-Tuff toy has an appealing mint scent. The ball is made from all non-toxic ingredients and the compound is recyclable. The company Planet Dog has an internal mantra of "think globally, act doggedly." They also have a ball that glows in the dark. Priced under $10.

There are so many creative artisans today. I am amazed with all the beautiful work that comes from recycled material. Artist Kathleen Plate makes these necklaces and earrings from beer, coke, wine and water glass bottles. She cuts the bottles and fires the glass, and then adds sterling silver accents leaving us with a fashionable piece of stylish jewelry. The colors are:teal (wine), clear (coke), green (water), or brown (beer). Prices start at $45

Unique uses of recycled glass.

Posted by etipton – April 15, 2008 5:56 PM

There are some new ways to used recycled glass in building projects. One is EnviroPLANK. EnviroPLANK is a unique floor tile made of recycled glass. For those who are trying to lessen our environmental footprint, this is a great flooring option. The company EnviroGLASS started in 2002. Plano, Texas had a glut of old glass bottles, mirrors and windows that became the source for this chic, green twist to the classic flooring concept. The creative solution of combining the multi-colored crystals with epoxy resin to create recycled glass Terrazzo was born. Now you can have it in your home. Prices start at $20/square foot.

Winter Whine.

Posted by etipton – April 14, 2008 12:06 PM

Why have a boring coat rack when you can have this one? This work of art uses used wine bottles instead of hooks. It can hold four heavy coats, but make sure you read all the installation instructions before hanging it on your wall. This is so much better than boring, traditional coat racks, and can make winter a little less dreary. Priced around $75.

Silly Twists.

Posted by etipton – April 14, 2008 9:07 AM

I like these reusable, silicone-coated Sili Twists. They were designed to tie up vegetables and meats. Sili Twists are made of silicone coated steel wire, and that keeps them safely tied around your asparagus or stuffed pork tenderloin. They are heat resistant up to 570 degrees Farenheit. Great for the oven, but not for the grill. You can also use them around the house for other improvement projects. Priced around $15 for six.

Energy bills.

Posted by etipton – April 13, 2008 4:20 PM

I always wonder why my energy bills are so high. I have a few older appliances, and I've wondered if it would save money to replace them. The Kill A Watt meter allows you to connect your appliance in to the meter and know how efficient it is. This meter will let you know how much leaving that extra TV, printer, alarm clock or stereo plugged in all the time costs. It displays usage in volts, amps, watts, Hz, or VA. Priced less than $35.

More than a fire pit, it's a piece of history.

Posted by etipton – April 1, 2008 7:59 AM

The Green Home fire pit is from Carolina Kettles. While it looks similar to other fire pits, their website shares a little more history. "In the 19th century, a syrup kettle or sugar kettle was more or less a tool that had several applications around the farm. It was used as a syrup cooking pot, used to scald hogs at slaughter time, used to render lard, and also as a water bath at canning time." I hope you don't need to scald hogs or render lard, but you can still enjoy one as a fire pit. Carolina Kettles produces exact replicas of the original syrup kettles. If you have the money, that seems a little neater to me than picking one up at a chain store. Priced around $1,000.

Red Fish Blue Fish

Posted by etipton – March 28, 2008 7:43 AM

Searching through the Green Home vendors, I came across One Fish Two Fish. They had a lot of neat pieces. One Fish Two Fish is a retail store in Savannah, Georgia, but they also have an online store. They have bedding, bath products, jewelry, furniture, entertaining items, books, lighting and upholstery choices. I liked the Marble Cheese Platter.

They also have some neat rattan items. They have a rattan tray, tissue box and napkin holder. They don't sell the products on the website, but if you contact them directly, I am sure they could help you get what you need.

It's not easy being green.

Posted by etipton – August 7, 2007 11:27 AM

My friend Jenny emailed me the other day and said "Somewhere, magazine, catalog, your blog?, I saw a set of 3 or 4 tote bags made for recycling. I think they were made out of old plastic bags, and they were different colors — green, white, pink/red? There was one for newspaper, PET plastics, aluminum, etc. Does this ring a bell with you?" Not only did it not ring a bell, I didn't have a clue what she was talking about. I started doing a little research, and I found all sorts of recycling uses for plastic bags (here is a pattern for some cute crochet purses), but nothing that looked like what she wanted. Then I found these really cute recycling bins from Design Within Reach. Low and behold these were the exact bags she was had seen. The product information from their website: A softer, more yielding version of traditional recycling containers, our set of four Recycling Bags can function as hold-alls for recyclables, as well as reusable shopping bags and gardening totes. Made of industrial-strength tarpaulin, a heavy double-warp fabric that is plastic-coated, the bags are waterproof and can be quickly washed out in the sink or outside with a garden hose. Each bag is color coded to provide easy visual cues when separating cans from bottles from papers. A fourth bag can function as a compost holder. Velcro tabs enable the bags to be ganged together in a row; handles make for easy carrying. Four interchangeable printed labels are included for use in the plastic window on the front of each bag. $22 for the set of four.

Let there be light.

Posted by etipton – May 30, 2007 9:30 AM

Candles provide wonderful ambiance, but they are inherently dangerous. Unattended candles at a friend’s house dripped from the mantle all the way down to the hearth in a stalagtite fashion. Luckily, a messy clean-up was all that happened. There could have been a fire. It is shocking to wake up or come home, and realize a candle was left burning. I have a small child, and she is attracted to candles like a moth to a flame. Vessel has created a rechargeable, LCD battery-operated candle called the Candela. It offers 8 hours of run-time after a full charge, safe for indoor and outdoor use, safe to the touch, and it comes on automatically when the power goes out. According to their website, they are more economical than votive candles. They also do not leave the soot stain on ceilings you get from traditional candles. The rechargeable batteries are replaceable. Two Candelas are priced under $50. They sell covers to add color for under $5. candela%201.jpg candela%202.jpg candela%203.jpg There is also a fun, colorful version called the Candloo. It is targeted more towards children. New twist on lunch.

Posted by etipton – May 16, 2007 1:25 PM

Fresh fruits and vegetables make wonderful salads and other easy things to pack and take to work or school. This stainless steel lunch jar makes that easier. The jar holds four stackable bowls, so you can bring hot things and cool things at the same time. Your soup can stay warm while your salad stays cold. Not only is bringing your lunch cost-effective, but you can pack food much healthier than you would get at the fast food place. Now if they can just create someone to pack the lunch for me, I will be set. It pays for itself in no time even if it is $50.lunch%20jar.jpg
