Red+Blue=Purple

Posted by etipton – June 25, 2008 5:43 PM

I am so sick of all this Red State, Blue State nonsense. I am not sure when we stopped being the United States, but they even make mugs about it now. While you won't see me carrying this mug around the office, it is a perfect gift for your political troublemaker.
The Republican version says Make My Day 2008. The mug turns all the states to red when filled with a hot beverage. It features stars, stripes, a Republican elephant and a dismayed Democrat donkey. The Red State mug is priced around $12.
redstate.jpg

The Blue State version says I Have A Dream 2008. The red states slowly turn to blue when a hot beverage is poured into the mug. It also features stars and stripes, but it has a frowning Republican elephant and Democrat donkey. The Blue State mug is also priced around $12.

Glove me tender.

Posted by etipton – June 6, 2008 1:58 PM

When Dad is at the grill, you would be smart to stay out of his way! The grill is so hot, and the flames dance around. It is very easy to get a burn. Do everyone a favor, and get Dad a red, silicone, BBQ glove. This handy grilling mitt will protect your hand and forearm from the intense heat of the grill. Unlike a mitt, the BBQ glove allows you to move your thumb and index finger freely, making it easier to grab and grasp tools, or pick up or push food around on the grill. The Silicone BBQ glove is priced around $15.

Bathtub Gin.

Posted by etipton – June 3, 2008 4:03 AM

Now that I am a parent and a grown-up, the bath tub full of ice or the Styrofoam cooler just don't cut it for entertaining. You need something a little nicer and classier like a beverage tub. I really like this one from Rush Gideon. They offer a deep, recycled copper or stainless steel tub on a decorative stand. The tub holds numerous bottles on 20 pounds of ice or more. As a bonus, you can also use the tub and stand to display plants indoors or outside. The pretty stand folds for easy storage when not in use. The beverage tub and stand are priced less than $175.

Don't forget moms-to-be!

Posted by etipton – May 2, 2008 11:08 AM

Yellow Snow?

Posted by etipton – April 25, 2008 4:16 PM

Today when I looked out my front window, I thought it was snowing until I realized it was almost 80 degrees and yellow. Yes, it is that time of year again. The time when my driveway, car, toys, patio and everything else is covered in oak tree pollen. It is awful. We had plans outside today, but with my allergy-prone child we decided to stay inside. It would be so nice if I knew this in advance. It really wasn't this bad yesterday. I should have gotten this 7-day weather forecaster with pollen index. It displays current weather data and real-time forecasts anytime. It also includes pollen alerts, wind speed and direction, UV index, and storm warnings. What makes this weather forecaster even better is that the information is updated throughout the day via satellite digital radio signals. That means this innovative gadget does not require outdoor sensors, an Internet connection, or any subscription. I am always glad to get something that is ready-to-go out of the box. Priced less than $200.

Posted by etipton – April 21, 2008 6:08 AM

A word of caution to my male readers: just because you love the Saint Louis Cardinals doesn't mean the women in your life love the Cardinals. To my female readers: if your significant other is a die-hard fan of any major league baseball team, check out these necklaces. They are made of material salvaged from the seats of famous ballparks. They feature a sterling silver ball chain and the name of each stadium engraved on the back. Each item comes with a certificate of stadium-material authenticity. You can choose from: Yankee Stadium (royal blue), RFK Stadium (orange), Shea Stadium (orange - plastic seats as opposed to wood), Dodger Stadium (blue), Fenway Park (dark blue), Comiskey Park (light green), Wrigley Field (dark green), Tiger Stadium (dark green), Baltimore Memorial Stadium (grey), Busch Stadium (grey), Boston Gardens (dark orange), or Polo Grounds (dark green). Signs, signs, everywhere are signs.

Posted by etipton – February 14, 2008 10:53 AM

Instead of stealing street signs to use around the house, look at these recycled sign gifts from Uncommon Goods. Run, DON'T WALK, to check out the coaster set. Artist Boris Bally uses recycled traffic signage in order to create bold objects of beauty that transcend their common roots. He has spent years sifting through thousands of traffic signs and exploring their properties to forge distinctive creations like these conveniently shaped coasters. Each is hand-cut and die-formed so it's ready for the beverage of your choice, then scrubbed clean and softened with a hand-filed finish. Handmade in Rhode Island. The coasters are priced less than $75 for a set of four.

If coasters aren't your thing, you can carry a work of art with you every day with this recycled street sign briefcase. It is the perfect gift for the man about town. This one-of-a-kind briefcase is not for those who drive in the slow lane. The aluminum case, created by artist Tripp Gregson, gets its dose of color and modern iconography from lawfully salvaged traffic signs. Interior organizer and file pockets, combination locks, a laptop compartment and carrying strap get you to the office and back, while its unique exterior make this briefcase anything but pedestrian. Love Letters

Posted by etipton – January 25, 2008 8:31 AM

Does anyone still send love letters? I haven't sent or received one since I signed up for AOL back in 1995. You are more likely to receive a text, an IM or an email professing love and romantic notions. I want to bring back love letters! Too much time has passed, but maybe I can get this love letter purse mirror from Red Envelope. It is designed to look like a love letter, but is really a silver-plated purse mirror. It is embellished with a love stamp and priority-mail postal mark. Inside, the mirror faces a heart-shaped frame for a favorite photo of her fondest admirer. Awww. Priced at $45.

I'm smitten!

Posted by etipton – January 23, 2008 2:09 PM

I just saw these today, and I've decided they are adorable and I need them. Well, at least I needed them last weekend. We went out of town, and while walking around out on the town, it was freezing. It was 16 degrees freezing, not just the "it's a bit cool out tonight" freezing. I had a coat, gloves, a warm scarf and I was still afraid of losing a digit it was so cold. I wanted to take a taxi back to the hotel, but the spouse didn't think it was far enough to justify. It might have been more enjoyable if we had these Smittens.
Knitwear designer Wendy Feller came up with the idea for Smittens while on a romantic, but chilly, walk with her husband. Instead of holding hands through bulky mittens, Feller designed a plush fleece set of two regular mittens plus a third over-sized one for a couple to share between them. Cozy for parents and kids, too. Enjoy your walk! Machine wash, tumble dry low. Handmade in Seattle. Set includes one medium mitten, one large mitten, and one Smitten to share. Ain't love sweet? Priced less than $35 for the set.

Some day your prince will come.

Posted by etipton – January 21, 2008 2:09 PM

Back when I was a single gal, I had a thing for frogs. I thought they were cute and I think I had watched too fairy tales. Maybe if I kissed enough frogs, I would find my handsome prince. Looking for some fun Valentine's gifts, I came across these really cute frog items. Share these with your single friends.
The frog salt and pepper shaker set. You can go ahead and kiss him, but all you'll get out of this frog prince, is a little spice! Priced less than $15.
frog%20salt.jpg

Here are some cute frog prince tea lights. You can pick from a crouching, lounging or daydreaming Frog Prince. Hmm, lounging is probably the most realistic version. Priced less than $15 each.
frog%20tea%20light.jpg

How about a little froggie bling bling for the ladies. This sterling silver frog prince claims to be good for warding off toads, and for bringing loads of luck in finding a full-size mortal prince. If that was true, all single women would own one, but it is still fun. Inspired by a lifelong love of fairies and a childlike sense of wonder, Lynette Miller's sterling silver frog wears a 14-karat gold crown and dangles from an elegant silver snake chain. The necklace features a classic clasp with a fairy ring mushroom - they're said to sprout where fairies have danced. Handmade in Texas. The necklace is 16 inches long. Priced around $75.

I have the power.

Posted by etipton – January 14, 2008 1:13 PM

I think Grandmothers are the hardest people for whom to buy gifts. They have everything. If they don't have it, they don't need it! This year I bought both of my grandmothers cordless power scissors from Black & Decker. It is so difficult to remove items from their packages anymore. It takes some sort of special scissors to cut through the twist-ties and heavy-duty plastic. This can be used for gift wrap, wall paper, shelf paper, cotton fabric, tarps, faux fur, burlap, quilt materials, denim, window screens, leather, carpet pads, and cardboard. Great for home improvement projects, sewing, and for people who have compromised wrist strength due to arthritis or other medical problems. The scissors will work for up to 90 minutes on a single charge. The best part is that the scissors come in an easy-to-open package, so you don't need the scissors to actually get the scissors out! Prices start at $20.
