Let the sun shine

Posted by etipton – September 11, 2008 9:26 AM

I do not have a green thumb, so I always wonder about where to place plants. With this Sunlight Calculator there is no more guessing. Just place the instrument where you want to put a plant, and it will measure the amount of accumulated light that falls there. The choices are full sun, partial sun, partial shade or full shade. See, I would have never guessed the difference between partial sun and partial shade, but apparently there is a difference. That is very good to know! The Sunlight Calculator is priced around $30.

Get the hang of it.

Posted by etipton – July 17, 2008 2:25 AM

I have to admit, I get very tired of pulling my ferns down to water them this time of year. There isn't a great option for watering. You either get a ladder and go up to plant level, you pick the plants up and bring them down to your level, or you squirt water aimlessly and hope some of it stays in the plant and does not drip down on you! Charley's Greenhouse and Garden has come up with a great solution. They have a Down-Up Pulley. This handy pulley makes it easy to lower and raise your hanging baskets for watering, feeding and plant care. A spring-loaded tape locks the basket in place at the desired height. The vertical adjustment is up to 31". The pulley holds up to 25 pounds. Hang it from a wall bracket, or attach it directly to a hook your ceiling, wall or post. The Down-Up Pulley is priced around $12.

Outdoor Cleaning.

Posted by etipton – June 21, 2008 2:22 PM

We are not lucky enough to have a utility sink in our home. When my parents built their house, they put the sink in the garage. When you are cleaning outdoor items, have muddy shoes, or are dirty from planting flowers, you do not have to mess up the kitchen sink cleaning up. Many utility sinks are in laundry rooms. It seems like a great idea at the time, but laundry rooms are not always convenient to your mess. Someone decided the best place for a sink is outside. This ReelSmart™ Sink Station with Automatic Hose Reel is perfect for all of your outdoor cleaning chores. The roomy 24” wide sink has swivel faucet, water control switch, sink stopper and filter. Two fold-out shelves cover the sink to provide a large, flat work surface. The station also offers a sturdy shelf for storage of supplies as well as a water powered self-winding hose reel which stores up to 150’ of 5/8” hose. Simply unhook the hose, and you don't have to worry about winter freezes. This outdoor utility sink is priced around $150.

Mother's Day

Posted by etipton – April 30, 2008 11:01 AM

Mother's Day is right around the corner. You need to be thinking of a gift for mom. I am going to spend the next few weeks giving you some ideas. My first suggestion is rain chains. Rain chains are a unique gift mom may not already have. Originating centuries ago in Japan, rain chains are a beautiful and decorative alternative to a traditional down spout on your home. As the water collects at the top of the rain chain, it gracefully cascades down the segments, resulting in a soothing sight and sound experience. A basin or barrel may also be added to collect rainwater for garden use. This lovely copper chain features a series of five sculpted lilies, designed to funnel the water from your gutters in a unique and interesting manner. A mounting attachment slips securely into your gutter outlet to make replacing your downspout a quick and simple affair. Segments may be easily removed to adjust to custom lengths, accommodating any size home. Over time, the copper construction will also patina to a beautiful green tone, for more interest. Add a dynamic accent to the side of your home with this Copper Lily Rain Chain. Prices start at $90.

Potter's Delight

Posted by etipton – March 10, 2008 11:26 AM

Spring. It is the time of year when the days get longer, the weather gets warmer, and the flowers start waking up from their winter sleep. It also means it is time to plant and re-pot. The worst part about changing planters is the mess. I don't have a good garden station, so most of my gardening occurs in my kitchen. You can turn any tabletop or counter into a temporary gardening workspace with the Potter's Perfection Mat. This versatile, water-repellent mat is uniquely designed for use over potting tables or kitchen countertops to contain dirt, fertilizer, and gardening chemicals. It is also a great mat to put in the car to protect the trunk when you pick up new plants at the nursery. This potting mat is a great gardening tool and the perfect gift for avid gardeners, indoor gardening aficionados, and container plant enthusiasts. Don't forget, Mother's Day is right around the corner. Priced less than $20.

Fall fun.

Posted by etipton – September 18, 2007 12:52 PM

Fall seems to be the time I find more huge, creepy spiders inside my house than any other time of year. Remove them the easy way with this spider catcher. The Spider Catcher allows you to practice catch-and-release spiders, while keeping yourself a comfortable distance away from the creatures. Grasp the handle and press the trigger to open a gentle fan of bristles that surround the spider. The bristles close gently, catching the spider safely. You can then relocate the spider to the wild. No batteries needed and the Spider Catcher works on a variety of insects including wasps, moths, daddy long-legs and butterflies. Priced less than $20.

Here is another version that keeps you a little closer to the buy, but it still works nicely. Priced under $10.

Fall coverings.

Posted by etipton – September 18, 2007 12:41 PM

There is nothing more enjoyable then sitting outside on a pretty day. It is so enjoyable that you purchased expensive patio furniture just for such occasions. In the winter, your furniture sets out, forgotten, just waiting for that precious, warm day you come outside. You go outside, and your furniture is too gross to sit on. It is caked with dirt and mildew. While it is warm enough to sit outside, it is not warm enough to drag out the water hose, clean your furniture, and drain the hose just to have it all happen again after the next rain or snow. That is why you need furniture covers. They have covers for every shape of furniture, from chaise loungers to stack chairs. The weatherproof cover is easily washable and protects your chairs from rain, dust, storms, and other kinds of damage. You will thank me in the spring. Priced from $15.

Submitted by you - Pot Sock-It.

Posted by etipton – July 27, 2007 1:45 PM

I received this lovely email from a reader the other day.
My wife loves plants. A few years ago, tired of looking at her hanging plants in their plain white plastic flower pots, she came up with an idea. She made covers for them from swimsuit material. We are now manufacturing them. It's called the "Pot Sock-It! Decorative Flowerpot Cover". Briefly, the Pot Sock-It is a simple, decorative stretchable sleeve designed to cover and enhance the appearance of a flower pot. The fabric and design allow the Pot Sock-It to tightly hug the contours of the flowerpot, retaining its' original shape and pattern. Also, because it's made of swimsuit material, it stands up well to the weather, resisting fade and dry-rot for years. It's available in many different colors, prints and patterns, and is a practical, easy, fun, smart and beautiful way to decorate! Simply slide the Pot Sock-It over your plain white flowerpot and you instantly have a new, gorgeous flower pot! You can learn more at www.potsockit.com. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
These look really cute, and would really help all the pots match regardless of what you hang or put out. Priced less than $10. Click for more pictures.

Oh where, Oh where did my little trowel go?

Posted by etipton – May 31, 2007 10:39 AM

Most of us have that corner in the garage where our tools set. There might be a few nails on a board where you can hang them, but it really isn't organized. A great gift for dad might be some garden racks. With this handy organizer, he can park his car in the garage with out getting hit in the head with a rake. The Garden Tool Organizer from Frontgate not just an organizer, but is more of a garden cart. It is a heavy-duty, rolling cart on locking casters. The grid center accommodates up to 23 long-handled tools, including spades, rakes, shovels, brooms, gloves, and seed packets. It also includes two removable canvas satchels with pockets for storing smaller items. Be aware, some assembly required. Priced at $129.

The Garden Rack & Basket by Schulte has a removable basket that carries to the garden and keeps your garden tools organized and accessible. Carry your hand-tools, seeds and other garden supplies with you - or use it to gather your garden produce! It attaches to the The Grid by Schulte or directly to the wall. more
