Bless their heart.

Posted by etipton – January 30, 2008 1:21 PM

If you live in the South, “Bless his/her heart” are the three most dangerous words that can ever be spoken. It means someone is getting ready to say something ugly, but saying “Bless his/her heart” makes it all OK. For the rest of you, bless your heart and your home with these adorable heart-shaped serving pieces. Inspired by ancient ceramics, artist Alice Goldsmith uses an incredible process of multi-layer glazing to create gorgeous texture and color contrasts in these beautiful ceramic hearts. The heart is a year-round decorative piece that looks lovely alone or provides a useful place to put candy, nuts, jewelry, coins, keys and other small items. Each is one of a kind. Handmade in New York City. Each sold individually. Prices start at $30.

Love Letters

Posted by etipton – January 25, 2008 8:31 AM

Does anyone still send love letters? I haven't sent or received one since I signed up for AOL back in 1995. You are more likely to receive a text, an IM or an email professing love and romantic notions. I want to bring back love letters! Too much time has passed, but maybe I can get this love letter purse mirror from Red Envelope. It is designed to look like a love letter, but is really a silver-plated purse mirror. It is embellished with a love stamp and priority-mail postal mark. Inside, the mirror faces a heart-shaped frame for a favorite photo of her fondest admirer. Awww. Priced at $45.

I'm smitten!

Posted by etipton – January 23, 2008 2:09 PM

I just saw these today, and I've decided they are adorable and I need them. Well, at least I needed them last weekend. We went out of town, and while walking around out on the town, it was freezing. It was 16 degrees freezing, not just the "it's a bit cool out tonight" freezing. I had a coat, gloves, a warm scarf and I was still afraid of losing a digit it was so cold. I wanted to take a taxi back to the hotel, but the spouse didn't think it was far enough to justify. It might have been more enjoyable if we had these Smittens.
Knitwear designer Wendy Feller came up with the idea for Smittens while on a romantic, but chilly, walk with her husband. Instead of holding hands through bulky mittens, Feller designed a plush fleece set of two regular mittens plus a third over-sized one for a couple to share between them. Cozy for parents and kids, too. Enjoy your walk! Machine wash, tumble dry low. Handmade in Seattle. Set includes one medium mitten, one large mitten, and one Smitten to share. Ain't love sweet? Priced less than $35 for the set.

Some day your prince will come.

Posted by etipton – January 21, 2008 2:09 PM

Back when I was a single gal, I had a thing for frogs. I thought they were cute and I think I had watched too fairy tales. Maybe if I kissed enough frogs, I would find my handsome prince. Looking for some fun Valentine's gifts, I came across these really cute frog items. Share these with your single friends.
The frog salt and pepper shaker set. You can go ahead and kiss him, but all you'll get out of this frog prince, is a little spice! Priced less than $15.

Here are some cute frog prince tea lights. You can pick from a crouching, lounging or daydreaming Frog Prince. Hmm, lounging is probably the most realistic version. Priced less than $15 each.

How about a little froggie bling bling for the ladies. This sterling silver frog prince claims to be good for warding off toads, and for bringing loads of luck in finding a full-size mortal prince. If that was true, all single women would own one, but it is still fun. Inspired by a lifelong love of fairies and a childlike sense of wonder, Lynette Miller's sterling silver frog wears a 14-karat gold crown and dangles from an elegant silver snake chain. The necklace features a classic clasp with a fairy ring mushroom - they're said to sprout where fairies have danced. Handmade in Texas. The necklace is 16 inches long. Priced around $75.

Basketcase.

Posted by etipton – January 21, 2008 10:45 AM

If you are looking for a romantic Valentine's Day gift, don't forget about picnic baskets. A quick picnic is a fun afternoon adventure. One of the great things about going on a picnic is that you don't have to really prepare food. There are so many themes you can have on a picnic. Pick up dessert and have a sweets theme. Grab some wine, crackers and cheese for a more sophisticated outing. Order some takeout from your favorite restaurant and you are ready to have lunch. I like this Wedding Heart Picnic Basket by Picnic Time. This romantic heart-shaped basket features a deluxe service for two. The basket is made from white-washed rattan and bamboo and is fully lined with quilted cotton. The basket includes two plates, a food container, two wine glasses, a cutting board, two sets of silverware, two napkins, a corkscrew, salt and pepper shakers, a cheese knife, and even a tablecloth. That just leaves you to grab some food and find a date. Good luck! Priced around $110.

Easy jar opener.

Posted by etipton – January 17, 2008 12:25 PM

My parents got me the strangest Christmas gift this year. They showed it to me, and then asked me to guess what it was. I didn't have a clue, but it was a jar opener. Lee Valley developed this opener that releases the vacuum inside the jar. Once you release the vacuum, the jar lid opens easily. The only downside is that it can bend the lid a bit, making the jar hard to close later. I am more careful with a jar of pickles that might sit in the refrigerator for months than say a jar of salsa that might get consumed in one sitting. I love it, and use the jar opener all the time. With this, I no longer am banging jars against the counter, asking my husband to loosen the lid, or trying to pop the vacuum with a knife. Thanks, Mom and Dad!Priced less than $10.

Conflicted Choices

Posted by etipton – January 16, 2008 2:32 PM

It is so hard to be a parent. The latest example of this is the recent controversy about Bishpenol-A in sippy cups and plastic bottles. Studies seem to indicate that it is harmless, but ten years from now they could decide it was dangerous after all. BornFree offers a training cup that contains no Bishpenol-A. BornFree products are a bit more expensive than the other brands. One sippy-cup costs around $10. At the grocery store, I can usually get two of the other brands for the same price. This is one of those decisions each parent has to research and make the most informed choice for his or her family. If you decide that Bisphenol-A is something you want to avoid, this BornFree cup is a great option. Priced around $10 per cup.

Nothing to sneeze at.

Posted by etipton – January 16, 2008 9:01 AM

Am I the only one who hates Kleenex boxes? Most of the boxes have ugly florals or patterns that have no style. You stand in the store thinking, “which of these boxes can I tolerate for the next six months?” This simple ring fixes all your problems. Part paper weight, part portable hole, Toro is made of ultra-hygienic stainless steel. The ring's absurd simplicity is actually the result of a carefully-engineered balance of weight and size; just right to let one tissue through at a time while staying firmly planted on the stack. What a concept! Priced less than $25.

I have the power.

Posted by etipton – January 14, 2008 1:13 PM

I think Grandmothers are the hardest people for whom to buy gifts. They have everything. If they don't have it, they don't need it! This year I bought both of my grandmothers cordless power scissors from Black & Decker. It is so difficult to remove items from their packages anymore. It takes some sort of special scissors to cut through the twist-ties and heavy-duty plastic. This can be used for gift wrap, wall paper, shelf paper, cotton fabric, tarps, faux fur, burlap, quilt materials, denim, window screens, leather, carpet pads, and cardboard. Great for home improvement projects, sewing, and for people who have compromised wrist strength due to arthritis or other medical problems. The scissors will work for up to 90 minutes on a single charge. The best part is that the scissors come in an easy-to-open package, so you don't need the scissors to actually get the scissors out! Prices start at $20.

Baby it's cold outside.

Posted by etipton – January 10, 2008 12:29 PM

It is January, so even on a warm day you know that bad weather is just a cloud away. I like this wheeled snow shovel by Frontgate. It allows you to clear your driveway without lifting or straining. Designed to greatly reduce the amount of physical effort required to snow shovel, this handy winter accessory out performs snow blowers without the expense, fumes, maintenance, or noise. It has steel and polypropylene construction with a durable powder coated finish. It easily adjusts to any body size or strength, and throws snow exactly where you want it. The shovel cleans down to the pavement without damaging stonework or landscaping. It is also proven to reduce lower back stress and exertion by a University of Massachusetts independent study. Priced around $120.

I also love this set of two trunks made from abaca and seagrass. These two natural fibers are woven together to form a ropelike strand around a wooden frame. The boxes are large enough to be used to store books, magazines or files. I mean, do you really want other people knowing you subscribe to People, Ok and Star magazines? Priced less than $190 for the set of two.

A different kind of high chair.

Posted by etipton – January 7, 2008 10:47 AM

If you have children close together in age, or if you take care of children on an occasional basis, the Handysitt chair is a great high chair alternative. At a very young age, our daughter wanted to ditch the baby chair and join the rest of the family. The Handysitt chair fits securely on a dining room chair and pulls right up to tables, allowing the child to sit safely with the family when dining or for other table activities. It folds flat for easy storage or travel. The chair features solid beech wood and steel construction and is available in several color choices with matching pads. Use for children aged seven months to four years.Priced around $80.

Your night to cook.

Posted by etipton – January 3, 2008 12:20 PM

New menus show up at my house all the time. I try to cook as often as I can, so we don't order in very often. Later, however, I can never find any of these menus if I need them. I throw them in a drawer and they disappear. We tend to get pizza because it is easy and fast, but we might be missing out on some great local food. End the chaos and take control of your takeout with this handy Takeout Menu Organizer that keeps your menus tidy and ready for ordering. The clever, convenient Takeout Menu Organizer includes 30 sleeves for storing up to 60 menus, six tabbed dividers for various cuisines, 50 ratings stickers, takeout tips and a 50-sheet group ordering pad. Imported. Priced under $30.
