Since I'm still waiting on those floor plans for the next HGTV Dream Home, I thought I'd try to find a question I could answer. DB Coop wanted to know if I ever get to visit the Dream Homes in person. OK, easy enough. Yes. The team that creates the online tour does visit the home each year, and so far I've been lucky enough to take trips to Lake Lure, N.C., Winter Park, Colo. And, of course, the beautiful Florida Keys. Here I am in the woods at Lake Lure. For some reason we just thought that sign was hysterical. Here's a picture from inside the HGTV Dream Home in Lake Lure, one you didn't see in the online tour. Funny story about that picture above. For some reason we never did figure out, there were literally a hundred or so pillows in that house. Not throw pillows, just big fat white bed pillows. So when Bruce, the genius who shoots and creates the 360-degree panoramic shots for every HGTV Dream Home, needed to photograph the master closet, JP and myself had to move all these pillows and stash them in the master bath. Then put them back in the closet. Speaking of Bruce, here he is at the Winter Park house. It seems like there are always some cool animals hanging around. In Lake Lure, it was this great big black lab that belonged to the builder. In Winter Park, we met Shadow. She belonged to a builder working on the house next door to the HGTV Dream Home, and would wander over to say hello occasionally. Here she is with JP playing with her favorite toy, a stick. While Winter Park was a dog town, Islamorada was ruled by cats. There are cats everywhere in the Florida Keys, and they are exactly as laid-back and chillin' as you'd expect cats to be when all they have to do is hang out in the Keys all day. This is Pistol. He literally moved right into our room at the Islander Resort. Well, since he's been there for 16 years according to the staff, I guess we’re the ones who moved into his room. Luckily, Mrs. FCole, who went with me, loves all animals and was thrilled that Pistol adopted us for our stay. Seriously — Pistol stayed with us for four days. Never left our room except to go outside for a bit to tend to his cat business. Most of the time he just curled up on the bed and napped. He may still be in that room, as far as I know. http://blogs.hgtv.com/hgtv/dreamhome/2008/05/want_to_peek_behind_the_curtai.html http://blogs.hgtv.com/hgtv/dreamhome/2008/05/want_to_peek_behind_the_curtai.html Fri, 02 May 2008 11:03:40 -0500 Your Very Own California Vineyard Well since I can't tease you with clues today, let's go home shopping instead. This one's pretty tough. Don't go crazy trying to read too much into that article or finding any subliminal clues in the image. You'll have to do a little research to figure it out, but there is a connection to the next location. If after pondering that clue nothing's ringing a bell for you, don't worry. You won't have much longer to wait. We're going to announce the location next Wednesday in a new video starring house planner Jack Thomasson. So be sure to check back April 16 for the premiere of our latest film! http://blogs.hgtv.com/hgtv/dreamhome/2008/04/one_last_clue_and_then_we_tell_1.html http://blogs.hgtv.com/hgtv/dreamhome/2008/04/one_last_clue_and_then_we_tell_1.html Fri, 11 Apr 2008 14:37:11 -0500 Have you seen the mystery dog? I am truly impressed with the enthusiasm and attention to detail many of you have brought to the examination of each clue to the location of the next HGTV Dream Home. Last week's clue involved a project from Carter Can, in which Carter built a screen door using redwood. The phrase "Look Behind the Door" wasn't meant to be taken literally, just that you could look around on the page and maybe find a couple of clues. Some of you did try to look behind that door, however, and several have claimed to see a dog. Many have even identified the breed of this mysterious canine as a Siberian husky. I can't see the dog, but that could just be me. I was never able to see the image in any of those Magic Eye posters that were popular back in the '90s. No matter how long I stared, I could never see the spaceship, unicorn, dolphins jumping over a rainbow or whatever else was supposed to magically leap out of the poster in 3-D glory. The only thing that ever leaped for me was my level of irritation. I've put up a large version of the image from Carter's project here. At least I think this is the image with a husky supposedly lurking in the shadows — there are also a handful of others on the Carter article. Let me know if this isn't the one. And if there really is a dog, it doesn't have anything to do with the location of the next HGTV Dream Home. Honestly, the main clue was that the door was made from redwood, and I also put a link to this article over on the right side of the page. If you clicked on to read about "The Magificent Redwood," there was one more clue at the bottom of that page. But a dog? Never part of the plan. Speaking of the location, I've seen an early version of the video, where house planner Jack Thomasson takes a tour of the town. It's really cool, and it's coming soon. How soon? Less than two weeks. Check back next week and I'll try to drop one more clue, along with a date for the premiere of the video. http://blogs.hgtv.com/hgtv/dreamhome/2008/04/have_you_seen_the_mystery_dog.html http://blogs.hgtv.com/hgtv/dreamhome/2008/04/have_you_seen_the_mystery_dog.html Fri, 04 Apr 2008 10:29:32 -0500 Clue #10: Check Behind the Door for Another Clue At first, this might seem like just an innocent home improvement project from HGTV's Carter Oosterhouse. But it does have a connection to the location of HGTV Dream Home 2009. And if you're paying close attention, you might pick up something else on that page that's related to where we're going. Maybe there's a grouping where one of the members isn't quite like the others? I hope to be able to release the exact location soon. Keep checking back for another clue each week until we have the big announcement. And if you haven't entered today, click on over and enter the HGTV Green Home sweepstakes for a chance to win an environmentally friendly home in South Carolina. You can enter once a day until May 9. http://blogs.hgtv.com/hgtv/dreamhome/2008/03/clue_10_check_behind_the_door.html http://blogs.hgtv.com/hgtv/dreamhome/2008/03/clue_10_check_behind_the_door.html Fri, 28 Mar 2008 13:34:39 -0500 Clue #9: Decorating With Yellow It's Good Friday, so I think I'll throw out a pretty good clue today. Check out some of the gorgeous spaces in this article about using yellow to brighten up any room in your home. There are five rooms, and the description in one includes a location that's not too far from the mark. I don't want to get into hot water by revealing too much. If you haven't entered yet, just a reminder that the HGTV Green Home sweepstakes kicked off today. The grand prize is a home designed and built with careful attention to be good for the environment, both inside and out. As usual, you can enter once a day until the sweepstakes ends on May 9.
