HGTV Dream Home

Your Very Own California Vineyard

Posted by fcole – April 18, 2008 11:34 AM

Well since I can't tease you with clues today, let's go home shopping instead. You can search for homes in the Sonoma area, where we're building HGTV Dream Home 2009, on our sister site FrontDoor.com. They even have an awesome 400-acre vineyard that could be yours for just $9.25 million. But there are plenty of much more affordable listings, too. Or you can just wait until January 2009 to enter for a chance to win the HGTV Dream Home.

Don't forgot, the HGTV Green Home sweepstakes is still going on, and you can enter once a day until May 9 for a chance to win a beautiful eco-friendly home in South Carolina.

Dear fcole: After looking at Ledson Armstrong's website again...one of their featured homes is located on Fifth Street East...could it be that the 2009 Dream Home would share the same street, or does each estate have its own named street? Marie Miller

Really, people---first, shmirst. Stop the bickering, move on, and just enjoy the ride as FC leads us on another exciting tour through the multitude of wonders in and around Sonoma and the Valley of the Moon. As a Napa native, I know firsthand that there is SO much to see and do in Sonoma and the surrounding areas. For those who've never had the opportunity to visit, put this slice of paradise at the top of your must see list.
Watching Jack Thomasson's video of the DH09 location reveal, I'd love to know all the details of the business arrangement between HGTV and Ledson enterprises. Some of the video shots were taken in front of and inside the Ledson Winery (known as the CASTLE), its vineyards, and of course, Ledson's Armstrong Estates. Steve Ledson and family also own a luxury six-room boutique hotel and wine bar on the Sonoma Plaza. With the DH09 deal, Ledson gets an incredible boost to the visibility of his several ventures (invaluable in this slower real estate market, and economy overall) and HGTV strikes a winning trade-off with an affordable building site in an otherwise multi-million dollar build-out. Brilliant on both sides.
Hmmm, think it's time to pack up, fuel up, and jet up to Sonoma County to spend a couple of days in limo luxury checking out progress on DH09 at the Armstrong Estates, and make an appearance at the Ledson Winery to restock the wine cellar. See y'all there.
BY THE WAY, FC, with all your responsibilities, do you get to visit the Dream Home sites firsthand?

Hi fcole! shopping for special items and designing this Dream Home will be an experience in itself! Jack in his own right has a pretty good eye for special touches and his own flare and blessed creativity... So, while your out & about a must stop for shopping, besides the entire coast of California... Maybe Jack and his design team will stop in and have a look see... Okay maybe take along the VIP Visa! LOL

Italian Pottery Outlet, 19 Helena, Santa Barbara. or via the web info@italianpottery.com I'm pretty sure the shop is still there. Some of these antique giare/capasoni, urns will give you sticker shock! Anyhow, this shop has some of the most beautiful pottery I've ever seen! So many patterns its hard to choose only one pattern... From the OMG! "Deruta -UVA Fresca" "Lunetta" collection... "Toscana" "Bianco Fresco" no doubt a sheer level of heaven! I'm not sure if its proper to mix patterns... as far a table settings? However, I have a "Wish List" of mixed platter & pitcher designs... just so you know! Wink wink.

I live in Illinois and we just had a 5.4 earthquake early this morning. So, now that I am familiar with earthquakes I am ready to win the 2009 HGTV Dream Home in California and retire to the sunshine! My grandchidren could vist me and help me pick grapes. I can't wait to see your new creation!

I know i am going to win this dream home cause i believe in god and to tell you the truth, the 2008 dream home has only 3!? bedrooms and i have like, 4 kids and the house is small compared to the other houses. hGtv HAS kinda lost its focus. so i hope they improve this year.and i heard in cali the home taxes arent so high and i have a job that gives me $ 150k a year becouse i am an engineer.so with me and my husband we will live in this house and not let some dum taxes get in the way.and with god on our side, we can do anything.i wont tell you my name until you see me on TV next year with me winning the house. after i win ill com back and write my name on my next blog. bye...im a winner...im a winner

If HGTV's ultra professional design star Linda Woodrum has her way with DH09, it's going to be another done-to-perfection showstopper. FC, DO YOU KNOW YET WHETHER L.W. WILL BE THE INTERIOR DESIGNER FOR THE ARMSTRONG ESTATES DREAM HOME?
I assume that a well-stocked wine cooler will be 'de rigueur' for a home of this caliber, and I'd hope Mr. Ledson would be willing to provide the DH09 winner with some complimentary vintages of his outstanding wines. That's a celebration I'd love to participate in---as the FOCUS of the DH09 winner's televised surprise party. (HGTV host and film crew invited for cheese and wine tasting after the wrap, of course!)
Once I'm settled in to my new Armstrong Estates DH09, would Linda Woodrum be willing to stop by and work her magic on my current home?

We all have a dream!
Thank you for this amazing gift. I will keep
trying and who knows, maybe luck will knock on
my door and it will be very welcome and very appreciated. A home in the wine country wow!!.
I think Glen Ellen, CA is the new location for the 2009 give away. good luck to all of us.

CARTMAN: My grandkid says I can't have a vineyard until I forget my love of Michigan wines, and learn to love the Sonoma Valley variety. That won't be hard because my favorite cuisine is Italian and what's pasta without vino? Don't have a dog right now, but I've had many. Just remember, what goes in must come out. Listen to your Mom. Bet you love HGTV as much as I do.

Dear fcole: Oh my...I have been looking at a city map of Sonoma, California..and, what a thunder bolt I had!!! Okay, I starting thinking about the Monopoly Board...I could never figure out what the dice meant...the numbers 3, 4 & 5 showing on the dice!! Well, while looking at the city map, 3rd street, 4th street & 5th street just jumped out at me like a vision!! Those streets surround Patten Street. I already guessed that the 2009 Dream Home would be built somewhere on Fifth Street East because of the Ledson Armstrong Estates Featured home..well because of the numbers on the dice...I pinpointed it to Patten Street!!! E. Walnut is close also, but my guess is Patten Street because it is surrounded by those numbers representing the Streets?? Have I gone nuts or what? Marie Miller

Good one, Cartman! FCole: Please tell us: What does HGTV have planned for us all between May and January? This has been a lot of fun. Sonoma is even closer than Sta. Cruz! Love y'all and all your shows! ~nb

Dear fcole: I guess I'm dreaming again tonight...seeing the website for Ledson Armstrong Estates, I can't help but dream about the type of home I would love to see as the 2009 Dream Home amid the grape heaven of Sonoma. It has always been a dream of mine to relive the Victorian period, which was a remarkable time in American architecture. No other period produced so many definitive styles and amazing houses. “The architecture of the Victorian Age tells us more about the men who made it than does any other architecture in history. It made such very definite statements about life.” Victorian rooms were heavily decorated, full of furniture, filled with rich fabrics, and accented with artistic arrangements of knickknacks, collections, photographs and artifacts. My french grandmother would say "TRÈS magnifique!!" I'm just a dreamer lost in Oregon!! Bonne nuit et fais de beaux rêves! (Good night and sweet dreams fcole!!)

Love the view of the 2411 Lovall Valley Road estate parcel. Also like the 0 Half Moon Street lot, it has classic CA appeal with the Oak trees scattered throughout the property. The 1881 Farmhouse property is very charming also.

Thank you for coming to the West Coast I am so looking forward to being able to enter the chance to win your new home. I don't know if you can but a one story home would be so nice for all of us that are unable to climb the stairs a "U" shaped would be wonderful with a patio in the center. All I can say is thank you so much for coming to CA, we would have a chance to live their if we won it, your others we loved but would of been impossible to enjoy. Thank you thank you and thank you for coming to the west coast. Good luck and we look forward to watching it progress we are thrilled.

I love the idea of HGTV building a dream home for the winner. BUT...Is it really the winners dream home? I feel HGTV should pick a winner, and let THEM pick the place and THEIR dream home, and HGTV build it for them. Where HGTV is building these homes is sometimes way out and beyond the winners means of living and caring for these homes. Some people may not want to pick up and move far away from family and friends. AND also, maybe a job has to be factored into the equasion. Let's face it, most red blooded Americans are middle class people, and these homes are WAY ABOVE their means of living. Not that the winners or WE the viewers are not greatful of HGTV's willing to do this for them, but come on....even I have family and friends, and I would LOVE to win a gourgeous home, but I would want it to be somewhere HERE, where I live now! I would not want to just pull up my roots and start over in a strange location. I LOVE the idea of GREEN building, and have alot of plans of my own to incorporate into "MY DREAM HOME". That would and should be what HGTV is looking to do for a winner. And they could put some of HGTV's ideas in as well.

Well, it sounds good, even though I am not a drinker, I do enjoy and occassional glass of wine. I don't know that much about the Sonoma area or alot about California for that matter, but I am somewhat of an adventurer, always have been. I know the home will be beautiful and someone will be very very lucky.

OH my gosh. I have never been to California. The location of the 2009 dream home is gorgeous. I love that part of California. It doesn't seem as congested as the larger cities from what I've seen on televison and magazines. The foliage and the grapes are beautiful. I wanted the Florida home, but I could deal with California. I NEED a change! Thank all you guys for these home giveaways.

Wow, a vineyard would be nice, but I think it might be a little ambitious for me. A nice cliff side beach house would be lovely, or a pretty cottage nestled among the redwoods. Where exactly in Sonoma is the house to be built? Can you give us any more detail? Narrow it down a bit.

Just curious fcole: Why is the Lovall Valley Loop home for sale shown twice on the Frontdoor Listings? Marie Miller

Posted by Marie Miller – April 20, 2008 9:51 AM

Dear fcole: It would be nice to own a 400-acre vineyard, however, I would certainly settle to have it in my own backyard!! Just to be in the Sonoma Valley with the Mayacamas Mountains looking down on you, would be unbelievable! All the homes listed with FrontDoor.com are georgeous..they are mansions with ideal settings for the Wine Country!! However, I can see a Victorian home gracing the space that HGTV has pick for the 2009 Dream Home!! Do you have a clue fcole as to the design we can expect? Hope you are having a GREAT weekend! We have snow in Brookings, Oregon!!! Love you HGTV, Marie Miller

Posted by Marie Miller – April 20, 2008 3:51 PM

Poor baby. If you're anything like my kids and partner, you'll never have a vineyard.

Seriously tho, isn't a vineyard a business?

Thanks fcole. Used your sister site, FrontDoor.com, and found it a real good tool to look around in different neighborhoods in various cities to see what's available to purchase. Would like to move by wintertime, so I'll be using it often.

Wondering if everyone is still out there (Hello?) or have ya'll found another bloggin' place?

Later, m

I lived in CA for 30 years. True story: Once got a phone call from some water company, telling me my account was in collections for my vineyard property. Ha! Nope, isn't me, I replied. He insisted it must be me. I told him look, I don't have a vineyard, wish I did, you must have the wrong number, but if I had a vineyard, surely I'd have paid the bill. Thanks anyway! click.Considering I grew up on the edge of Lodi, CA, the other California wine hotspot, and we used to take trips to Petaluma, Bodega Bay & my first son may have been conceived there, lol, - it is only fitting that my first dreamhome should be in the Sonoma Napa region. Pls keep that in mind HGTV, and pick me, pick me, pick me....please?

Posted by kelly in AZ – April 20, 2008 6:44 PM

Well, I would have preferred Portola Valley, but at least it is only an hour away from my own house. I will definitely try for this one! And to all you people afraid of Cali-for-ni-A, Sonoma Valley is very beautiful. It's the farthest point out, but still in the good 'ol San Francisco Bay Area! Gotta love it!!

To DBCoop: Love your comments!! I'm with you all the way...cheers to your billiant insight..I, too, grew up in the Sonoma County area..Sebastopol!! Life was simple then & certainly never thought I would be involved in a "Dream Home" adventure in Sonoma!! WOW!! I remember cutting class in highschool (oops, sorry mom) & heading to Sonoma...loved hanging out around its historic town plaza, a remnant of the town's Spanish colonial past! It was great fun & I have tons of memories, so I'm thrilled that I can dream of living there after all these years!! Nothing like sitting back in a limo with a glass of 2004 Knight Valley Merlot & having your Chauffeur drive you through the Sonoma/Napa Valley to each & every winery!! Of course, the premier winery would have to be the Ledson Castle, which is located right in the heart of Sonoma!! Nothing like stolling through the Farmer's Market, held every Tuesday in the summer. AAAAAAAAAAAAh...the sweet smell of floral aromas along with the fruity, herb, wood, & vegetable smells flowing through the air in the market!! I long for the peaceful living in Sonoma...thanks again! Marie Miller

FCOLE - Glad you're back posting. Did you actually take an entire weekend off? I guess when you make the huge amount of money that HGTV pays you that you're expected to work as hard as you do. But enough brown nosing (is brown nosing one word or two?) will we have another clue this friday? Jack said that he had the plans in his hands, when do we find out the style of the home?

I also thought it was a terrific idea that the bloggers get together some time in Sonoma to take a tour of the home. Marie and Joe could have a throwdown to determine who was first and we could turn in DBCooper for the reward money and really have a party ; )

Posted by Snowapple – April 21, 2008 12:39 PM

Hmmm, Craftsman, Victorian, or? What style WILL the DH09 be? I just have one question (well, actually I have many, but...) WILL THE DH HAVE GUEST QUARTERS OVER THE CARRIAGE HOUSE, AKA GARAGE? After all, besides the winner's family and friends, there'll be a constant flow of DH winner hopefuls and fellow DH bloggers. Shouldn't they deserve a chance to enjoy a luxurious night or two experiencing everything that the DH09 will have to offer?
By the way, for those who are REALLY curious, house plans are public record, available for viewing, in person, to anyone. It's not my place, however, to spill the beans with that detailed info. I'll leave that to others in the know. I prefer to remain in suspense, and be delightfully surprised. I look forward to the unfolding of the DH09 building progess reveals as it all comes together under the very competent direction of HGTV, Jack Thomasson, FC, and the ENTIRE crew.
One last point---although there won't be space on the 1/2 acre DH lot for a real vineyard, the DH winner will certainly be able to plant at least a FEW grapevines to enjoy for their own eating pleasure, and perhaps even some DH09 estate bottled wines! (remember, bottled and corked, not boxed, please!)

Posted by DBCoop – April 21, 2008 12:56 PM

I'll take that part of California anyway I can Get it. Looking forward to this one. I love the

Dear fcole: Will you be revealing the meaning of the clues at some point? I especially want to know if the three Dice on the Monopoly Board have anything to do with the streets where the 2009 Dream Home will be built. Looking at the city map of Sonoma, California..3rd street, 4th street & 5th street surround Patten Street. It would be my guess that the Dream Home wil be built on the corner of Fifth Street East and Patten Street!!! Marie Miller

Well, I guess you can dream of someday having what you wish for. This may not be my time...but if I want to live somewhere like this, I guess I can make it happen on my own, huh?
Great choice of location! Good luck to you all!

Used to love this blog until it morphed into the Marie Miller show. ANYWAY, i think HGTV should forget about $$$ and use more sense, make the dream home more dreamy by allowing real people to afford to stay in the home after they win.

do they have the floor plans made yet fcole??? i hope they have at least one more bedroom this year :D

Posted by emily – April 22, 2008 7:10 PM

I agree with the annonymous post above. In an ideal world the dream home would go to someone who doesn't already have a home...who can't afford one... and who really needs one....BUT...

In the real world they would not be able to keep it under those circumstances anyway. Selling the "unaffordable dream version" and using the money to purchase a home they could afford, is still NOT TOO SHABBY a deal though.

Then again, 'Habitat for America' makes the "affordable dream version" come true for people in need all the time. So do we want someone in need to win the "Extravagant Version" just because it's otherwise unattainable for them?

Dear Hans Hofstetter: Thank you for your Comment!! You are right...'cause I have children and grandchildren that live in Santa Rosa & Sebastopol, so winning the 2009 Dream Home would get me back into their lives by living closer to them!! We retired in Oregon & certainly did not expect the economy to go bonkers!! So, yes!! I would be the happiest person in America!!! Have a GREAT day!! Marie Miller

To Anonymous: I absolutely agree with you about making the dream home more dreamy by allowing real people to afford to stay in the home after they win. Or, maybe even better, giving away more homes that cost less, especially so more needy families have a chance to win!!

Oh yeah, I love the idea that this blog has morphed into the Marie Miller show. Never had a show of my own!! Thank you!!

I agree! That would be me!! :) I would LOVE to win this home, I would like to have a home of my own and get ahead in life. I'm determined but because this economy is making it hard for most of us to purchase homes these days we have to resort to other means. Where could I find more information on how to enter this contest, the rules and what to do in order to win?

Posted by Karen – April 23, 2008 1:38 PM

I would love to live in Sonoma CA as I have been in that part of the country and it is a beautiful and it looks like a lovely home. I am retired and dreaming of my dream home and this one looks like it could be it. I am ready to move when my name is selected as I cannot wait to enter. I used to live in California (south) and my sister lived close to Napa Valley. Nice, nice, nice. I do not know just how expensive it would be to live in it but, am hoping it would be within my means if I won the house. And if not, then I will just have to talk family into moving to California with me if they could stand to live with their mother in her older age. I am sure sons and family would love that. "Big Grins" In fact, that sounds better all the time. I will be working on that angle.

Why would you want the home to go to some one who doesn't own one yet. Isn't that abit socialist? Just because I happen to be in the position of BUYING my own home I should be excluded? Why should paying mortgage payments forever take away the dream of being financially secure, and having my house paid for just like you want. The way HGTV picks the winner is just right. They dont do anything but draw a name, so everyone who enters has the same chance

thank you Sandi!! NOW MY VOTE IS FOR A TUSCAN DREAM HOUSE. VERY BIG AND VERY EXPENSIVE. MAYBE I'LL SELL IT TO TOM AND KATE.

Dear fcole: we, the blogers, really deserve to know what and where all those clues pointed to. We wrote down all the clues, worked our brain, searched the web, saw imaginary dogs, letters, etc. and some how none of it really made sense. Now, like a good game show host, PLEASE reveal the clues. PLEASE!!!!!

Welcome HGTV to lovely Sonoma County. I have had the pleasure of living here for 24 years and have been selling real estate in the most beautiful place on earth. The vineyards make is so picturesque and also provide many opportunities for entertainment. This upcoming weekend for example is a "passport" weekend through the Dry Creek Valley. Great pick for the 2009 Dream Home Giveaway

First of all, Congrats to this years winner! I do this year after year and it's always a kick. I love to dream that someday it could be me. The new DH would mean a 3000 mile move for us, but what the heck- L.O.L. I can't wait until the next home is up for entries. HGTV always surprises me with the locations and this is a really great location. Thanks for all the fun, entertainment and dreams.

From what I am reading as of this posting, it does look like the Marie Miller (or is it: Hans Hofstetter) person some of you have mentioned has stopped boasting for a few days now. Thank you Marie. I agree with several other postings here. The blog is much nicer when it isn't a forum for one person.

FCOLE: HAVE THEY COMMITTED TO THE STYLE OF THE HOUSE YET OR WILL HGTV STILL BE LOOKING FOR INPUT FROM THE PUBLIC?

Posted by Cherilyn – April 23, 2008 8:20 PM

Winning this home would help fulfill my dream. I would sell the house and buy a more affordable house in the area of California I currently live. That would be a dream come true.

Posted by Joline – April 23, 2008 8:28 PM

The location is beautiful. It is really a dream home. I'll love it to own it. :)

I believe I am the winner of the 2009
Dream Home. Sonoma area is beautiful
and the rolling hills are too! I
can not wait to see it! I would
like for it to be a 5 or 6 bedroom
house. This past year was to
small. I believe the Lord
is looking out for me.

Posted by Posted by Anonymous – April 24, 2008 10:40 AM

I agree with Deb - I think a winner should be picked and let them design their dream home close to family and friends. However, being a native Californian, Sonoma is not that far for me. I'm a widow who lost all when my husband died-no thanks to pres bush - I wonder sometimes if i have a chance to win because my family is grown and on their own - but I have grandchildren and no home for them to come and stay with me - I have been designing my own home for many many years but it does not look like it will ever come to be - hey Jack if you ever want to use my design it's awesome! my prayers are for all of us to have a home we love and care for!

Sounds like Heaven! No matter what design is chosen I know it will be absolutely beautiful! I can't wait to move in!

Because of the spanish history of the town...my
guess would be that this house will be a spanish
inspired house. The house will have arched doorways..probably a great outdoor kitchen with a fireplace.Terra cota tiles on the floor. This would be beautiful.I hope Im right. This would be one to figure out how I could actually affored to stay and live there.

Posted by Hoof Hearted – April 25, 2008 11:05 AM

Wow, FC, here I run off to D.C. for a couple of days, and you're back at work posting ALL KINDS of entertaining and, well, out of the ordinary types of comments to catch up on. Hi to Marie, qui doit parler francais mieux que moi, and a question, did she provide some incentive to get Hans to promote her as most deserving winner of the DH09?
OK, not a message board here, but WHY would the DH09 winner want to move out of state. I Love California and I've been around(on the run, so to speak.) It's the greatest here!
THANKS FCOLE, AS A RESULT OF YOUR EARLIER CLUES, I WATCHED 'Wild in the Country' (Elvis movie filmed in St. Helena) It was fun to check out the scenery back then.
WAITING FOR FC TO CLUE US IN ON JACK'S NEXT PROGRESS VIDEO.
My fellow bloggers: please don't turn me in now for the reward money, I might miss my chance to win the DH09, and BOY would I be disappointed!

Posted by DBCoop – April 25, 2008 1:00 PM

I am realllly curious what the Rules mean by a "background check will be performed" What criteria could actually disqualify a person? Most ppl would probably assume some heinous crime, but who knows??

Posted by KATE – April 25, 2008 4:40 PM

Breathtaking. What a magnificient home. I am now living in Indiana. I was born and raised in California and have been longing to go back. It would be lovely for my son to return from duty in the Navy to come home to this.
Good luck to us all.

Breaking News, I have learned on good authority while shopping for next years DH fcole was seen with Elvis... busting some new dance moves! Ladies ladies! Simmer down!

I would really like to see what states the bloggers call home. Tuscany colors are a "for sure". Muted browns, yellows, oranges, and greens with grape colors for accent. I hope the floors plans are very open with lots of earthen tile. A pallazo (sp?) incorporated into the design with a water fountain. Imagine sitting in the sun under a vine covered balcony, eating cheese and bread as you and your honey sip on a perfect glass of wine. Also with the redwood country so close several wind chimes made of California redwood by local artists making magical music with the breeze. This is called the dream home, right?

Posted by sandi, iowa – April 25, 2008 8:43 PM

This something I have been waiting for! The DH is coming to CALI! If I win I can't wait to get back to the bay area! It's really one of the best places to live. Definetly one of my dream locations.

Angie April 12th 1:34pm was the first person to write that it the HGTV Dream Home is at Armstrong Estates. Anybody want to correct me? I really can not stand people patting themselves on the back! It is so unattractive to see people with ape arms. By the by I do not know this Angie person.

Posted by CAgirl – April 25, 2008 10:19 PM

I stand corrected! I rescind my previous comment. Ugh I hate it when I do stupid things! Marie Miller was the first person to write Armstrong Estates in the blog on April 4th. Now who looks foolish? Still wish HGTV had picked a beach location for a California Dream home. 1/2 an acre is a bit squishy too. Bummer!

FCOLE: Just a few questions for you!

What's the style of the house gonna be like? Who's the contractor? Who's the decorator? What's going in it? Will there be a guest house? How are these things determined? Have they already been determined or is it still being designed? When do we get another video? What's the specific address? When can we tour? What was the relationship between the scrabble clues and the location? Can we get Joan Stephen back for next years reveal? Do you know the answer to any of these question? If not you, then who?

Start where ever you like!! (smile)

Has anyone considered that Marie Miller, DBCooper and Anonymous might be the same person? One of them has tricked us before. Sorry, I would bet my bottom dollar (which isn't worth anything) that no Californian will win the DH09. If I won it, I would have to sell it. But the fun is waiting for HGTV to reveal the floor plans. We know it's in a beautiful location. But what kind of house is planned? fcole, more info soon, please.

Posted by Katydid – April 26, 2008 6:52 PM

Jack---Give us a Tuscan home with open space, high ceilings, designer painted walls, arc center attractions in walls or over the doors. A big wide fireplace with a high raised hearth. Don't forget to stay "GREEN" in the kitchen but not to dark overall. Mexican tiles floors are beautiful but hard on the legs. I have oak/medium dark cabinets in my kitchen. I can't wait to see what your plans are for this home. I think you, Linda and the crew create absolutely great home packages, keep it up. dee

For those of us who DON'T happen to win the DH09, these are two possibilities (www.frontdoor.com) for a comfortable wine country home under a million bucks:

This is a 3,025 sq ft 4/3 on 1/2 acre for $975k. It would make a great Sonoma home, even if you have to sell that gorgeous DH09 and "downsize":
[URL=http://www.frontdoor.com/for_sale/listing/111-12531038/Sonoma,CA,USA/]

The next one, at $829,900, with 2,195 sq ft, could use a little more square footage, but still, it's a 3/3, so there's room for guests. I don't know about outdoor party space, the lot is smaller. Low maintenance at least, good for a Sonoma Valley getaway home, or full-time:
[URL=http://www.frontdoor.com/for_sale/listing/193-24034829/Sonoma,CA,USA/]

But, don't think I'm ready to put my own house on the market yet, at least not until I get that surprise visit from the HGTV DH09 film crew!

DBCoop's motto:
"When the chips are down, it's not how far you fall, it's how successfully you jump that counts"

Now I understand why I haven't won any of the more recent Dream Homes! It's because I'm a 6th generation Californian and I've tried living in other states. But I always come back to Northern CA. Used to live in St. Helena and on Mt. Veeder just a mile from the Sonoma County line (Trinity Road (Sonoma) and Oakville Grade Road on the Napa County side. Robin Williams estate is near there at the end of Wall Road. Would love to live near my old friends and family again. This may be my year. It's so lovely. My daughter is getting married in St. Helena at Grace Episcopal Church which is over 140 years old. It's definately worth a trip over just to see the old stone church. Having lunch at the Spring Street Cafe just a half a block away is a great place to eat inside or out. This may be my year, gals!!! (and guys). Depending upon the size and layout of the Dream Home and if I could get a B&B license, you all would still have a chance to enjoy the home and area. So, we would all be winners!!! May the house go to the most deserving person/couple/family. Bountiful blessings to you all.

Hubby and I are looking for new home...R.E. prices are still above and way beyond what we can afford even in this market. I was raised in California and miss it terribly, currently moving between homes of older children till we find the right location. The 2009 Dream Home is just that! Talk about fulfilling my dream, besides the vineyard and wine to be collected and enjoyed with friends brings would be perfect. We have friends in Sabastapol we have not seen in years!

A California home! My husband and I were born and raised in southern California.I went to school in Moraga. My parents are in there late 70s and getting to see them more often with the four kids would be a treat. We live in feezing Minnesota.I miss sunny California.I'll be entering everyday.

I've lived in the bay area all my life and often frequent the Sonoma area. What a perfect setting for the next HGTV Dream Home.

Happened to be in Sonoma for dinner last night (Can't miss the "Girl and the Fig" for a delightful dinner when you're in town) and noticed a new home in the beginning stages on Fifth Street East. Could it be? Just a thought...

But I long for home, Sonoma is where my husband and I met, maybe this is the way God will send us home. I hope so, good luck to all!

Posted by Sunny – April 27, 2008 6:21 PM

OK, I WANT it... I am so homesick for California, particularly Sonoma County! The wet, grey skies of Oregon are too much for this California Girl! Hopefully, this home will be green, not to steal the thunder of the HGTV's Green Home, but that Adobe is too good to miss!

FCOLE: DO YOU THINK DH09 WILL INCLUDE A DOGHOUSE?
(No, not for me, though I seem to get myself into it at home often enough.)
After losing my loyal companion (Sheltie) recently, I'm thinking of adopting another faithful pet. AS SOMEONE IN THE KNOW, DO YOU THINK A SHELTIE OR BORDER COLLIE IS A GOOD MATCH FOR DH09, OR SHOULD I CONSIDER A LESS ACTIVE BREED? (I hope he/she doesn't develop a taste for fermented grapes...)
Wake me when it's January 1, 2009 so I can start zipping in those entries!

I would have loved to have won the 2008 Dreamhome, but I had an issue with the floor plans. The childrens room was WAY on the bottom floor and the master suite was WAY on the third floor. While some people may not have minded this much, my boys are still very young and they would have been sleeping in the "guest" room if we had one. One suggestion for the great new dreamhome, have the kids room a little closer to the mater suite. I know whatever plans get drawn up they will be wonderful, I just wanted to pitch in my two cents so that when I win this one, I'll have no complaints. Cheers!

Posted by Kathy – April 28, 2008 2:44 PM

Why do you use the same decorator? LW is ok but why not give some other decorators from HGTV a chance? Candice Olsen is wonderful, and so are many of the other decorators on HGTV. I was disappointed you didn't have Joan S. from Decorating Cents do the tour this year. She is truly the best hostess. I guess since LW and her daughter did the last dream home, you must be going to keep it in the family. Shame on you.

I'm sure you're right Katydid, but you forgot to add Hans Hofstetter to that group...haha. Just a little too much back patting going on in that group. Oh well...whatever floats his/her boat. I really feel for all the people wanting to come back to the Bay Area. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, because I can't imagine living anywhere else. Hope to welcome you all back through our Golden Gate soon.

A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!!! I cannot wait to see this! As a 'born and raised' norcal girl...I'm SUPER excited to see the next DH here in CALI! The Somona area is breathtaking....and anyone who wins will have a lifetime of wonderful memories! Please stop with any negative comments....California is the best place to live...and the ONLY place for me! Where else can you go to the beach or the mountains for a day trip?! YOU'll love it!!!

TO WHOM EVER IS DESIGNING THE DREAM HOME, IT MIGHT BE NICE TO PUT ELECTRICAL OUTLETS ALONG THE ROOF LINE STRATEGICALLY PLACED TO MAKE HOLIDAY DECORATIONS MUCH EASIER TO INSTALL, also a few around the yard and on censers or timers!

And for all the people with hard luck stories! We all have them but the home is not given out solely on hard luck stories. As a matter of fact I don't believe it is on hard luck at all. I believe it is from the grace of GOD and good fortune and lots of prayers but probably the most humble will win. If we complain about or situation then we are the least humble and also if we make known our circumstances then we are not humble. GOD BLESS whomever wins! And may they enjoy and share as much as possible with as many as possible!!!!

Good Morning fcole! Soooo happy to see new blogs!

By the way, to "Katydid"...please do not think I am the same person as the infamous "Anonymous" and/or "DBCoop", however, I don't mind being put in the same catagory with them as I feel their comments add something worthwhile!! I wouldn't mind sharing a glass of wine with both of them in my new "Dream Home" in Sonoma!! It would be an interesting get-together for sure!

The 2009 Dream Home is more special to me than any other before!! Why? Because for me, it means going home!! I grew up in Sebastopol & would love nothing better than to live in Sonoma, and be closer to my children and grandchildren!

To: Deborah: Who are your friends in Sebastopol? Did your maiden name start with a "P"? Just curious?

To Nini: What part of Oregon are you from...we seem to share the same wet weather here in Brookings?

I'm so anxious to hear from Jack...will he be exposing the "plans" soon? Will he give us an updated film showing the progress? I'm not sure the style of the home means as much as the area where it will be built...amid the vineyards where the birds are singing, and the grass is lush and green. You could picnic under an azure sky with local wine, breads, produce, and cheeses. Paradise! "Dreamin, I'm always Dreamin...'til my Dreaming comes true!!" Wonderful song from days gone by....thank you Johnny Burnette!! And, thank you HGTV for giving me a chance for thinking my dream could come true!!! Marie Miller

Well, Marie M, what's wrong with my teeth, you say? Just kidding, I know---"don't look a gift horse in the mouth" as we say in English. A sensible comment that applies to the DH09, since HGTV is offering all of us the chance of a lifetime to win a beautiful luxury dream home. Now, MY long list of personal preferences for the DH09 are: WINNING IT!

Posted by DBCoop – April 29, 2008 12:12 PM

I would like a large kitchen. The one in the 2008 home isn't so big and whoever heard of the fridge in the pantry. It would be nice if it were more like the green home, but no wierd things like a neon green counter.

Please make it a one story home .Handicap, indoor pool, grapes are good for you.
All homes need to be built to be ready if you become handicap! I know because we were in a wreck years ago and my husband is handicap, our bedroom doors arent wide enough the bathroom is not handicap friendly. cna afford to get it fixed, and insurance is being very stubborn
would love to live somewhere warm good for bones you know.
cant wait to see what yall come up with this time!

Hi Marie, I am in Portland, which is way colder and wetter than Brookings... I tried to get transferred to Gold Beach so I could be closer to home. Still up here, and dreaming of California summers... My Mom lives in Petaluma, and has a view of the Sonoma hills from her dining room. We go to Sonoma every time I am there. The courtyard at the mission is my favorite place on earth!

Marie Miller, it nice to have a dream of winning the 2009 Dream home we all do; but I think you have an obsession with it. You need to chill out for a while, & concentrate on other things. I'm not telling you to give up your dream, just do not let it consume your life. I too would love to win, just like millions of other people, but I do have other things going on in my life. You sound like a a very sweet & nice lady, do not let this contest change you. Best wishes to you, maybe you will win and be able to relocate back to Ca. to be with your family.

Posted by Anonymous – April 30, 2008 9:16 AM

To DBCoop: Do you have a french background? My father was a full-blooded frenchman..born in Paris! I've never been there & pray someday to stroll by the Eiffel Tower & try to imagine my father as a small boy there....delivering pies for the nuns! I guess the 2009 Dream Home built amid the wineries possesses the essence of the "old world" and certainly would be a compliment to so many of my dreams..."la maison de mes rêves!!" From medieval times to modern days, France has been at the forefront of architectural innovation...so, maybe HGTV might have that in mind? Or, maybe French Creole architecture, which is an American Colonial style that developed in the early 1700s in the Mississippi Valley, especially in Louisiana. French Creole buildings borrow traditions from France, the Caribbean, and many other parts of the world.

I would love to see CANDACE OLSON decorate the 2009 Dream Home..her creations would more than "devine!!" She would create and deliver style that would exceed our expectations!!

I am a fan of the HGTV Dream Home show. It gives people like me hope that you to can win. The Sanoma dream home sounds fantastic and I hope I win. I have always thought that if people submit their idea of what their dream home would look like with the idea location, it would be make an interesting show. HGTV Dream home is the closes I have ever come to that. Thanks HGTV. It would be an honor to be selected for the HGTV dream home winner. My ideal dream home would be a green home, and would supply it's own electricity and reclaimed salt water. It would be a ranch style home with extreamly large room that could accomidate a motirized wheel chair for later years. There would be enough room for family and friends and would allow them to be able to visit together as well as have their own appartment style sections. The suburban view would be a beautiful Hawaii view overlooking the beach on a hill with a pool and hot tub with an out door kitchen. Thats why it is a dream home.

I did not even try for the 2008. Was painted too wild, stuffed way too full, small rooms. I hope this years will have large elegant rooms with expensive looking furniture, not the
home made look. Too much stuff makes a house look cluttered and cheap. Location was good. Will wait to see the California house. I liked the rustic looking cabin type house. I don't remember what year it was.

I've always wanted to live in San Fransisco. I have a friend that went for a visit to San Fran and never came back home to the east coast. He just loves it over there. I took a trip after hearing so much about it, and then a second trip. After that life took its course and I've never returned, even though my heart is in San Fransisco. I've watched most of all the HGTV dream home giveaways and I believe that the designers are on top every little detail. Great job guys! Certainly one where you could retire to . I'm willing to leave CNY for the warmth of CA. I'm tired of 160 inches of snow every winter. So I"m praying that my DH and I will win this years Dream Home. I've followed them all.

Winning ANY of the beautiful dream homes would get me and my husband out of this horrible housing mess here in Southern California and we could finally have kids! I am really praying we win so that we can start our family without fear of losing our home. If I can't win 2008 then 2009 would be even better! Good luck to everyone!

Fcole,
Did you leave us? It has been two weeks since we've heard from you? Are you not going to stay with us until the house is build? I thought you would come on from time to time to give us an update or two to keep us going while the home is being built.

I would enjoy the sorrounding vineyards and everything that Sonoma offers...

My experiences started approximately 4 years ago. I had just bought my house which was built in 1954, so it is a little bit older, no big deal right? I was just happy to be an owner of a house at such a young age. Before moving in we started upgrading a bit, small things like paint, electrical sockets etc. And while working later at night you would hear some strange noises. I did not think much of it because the house is older. Me and my friend moved in a few weeks later and noticed odd things starting to happen.

Everything was pretty normal at the beginning nothing exciting. I should note that to get to the basement there was a door which lead to the landing where the backdoor was, and then you would turn the corner to get to the undeveloped basement. My friend decided to put his bed downstairs where it would be dark and quiet.

After a while he started saying how he would wake up to some really strange noises, things he could not quite put his finger on what it could be. He would tell me about it and I would just chalk it up to an old house.

Well a few weeks later he decided to move upstairs and was more than a little freaked about the basement. Now I am a believer of the supernatural but I know the mind can play tricks on you if you let it, well the stuff that started happening I for one cannot explain at all.

My friend and my dog were home by themselves and were in the kitchen, when in the bathroom 15 feet away the faucet turns on and my dog high tails it out of there through her dog door, and my friend left.

Once I was sitting home alone with my dog upstairs, and clear as a bell, no old house creaks or bangs but like someone directly below me had a broom and hit the floor right beneath my feet. Again my dog is outta there.

Another odd experience happened in the kitchen, which when my bedroom door is open overlooks. I woke up one morning, not groggy or anything and I saw someone sitting in a chair, I turn my head for one second and ask what are you doing thinking its my roommate and when I turn back it is gone.

Also at night we kept the dog locked in the landing by the stairs to the basement and for 3 nights in a row she would wake me up at 6 am exactly to the minute whining and crying and freaking out, so now she sleeps in my room.

My roommate found out from the neighbor that not the people before us but the people that lived there before them, the old man died in my basement. Now I am not sure if I can chalk this all up to coincidence but I would sure like to know what, if anything is in my old house.

To Hans: Thank you for reading my comments & for such an unselfish opinion..I know my chances are next to nothing to winning the 2009 Dream Home, but dreaming is such a beautiful thing!! Make sure you enter & if you win, maybe we can have dinner together in "your" beautiful home!! Thanks again!! Marie Miller

Only one question; Does Jack come with the home?

Posted by Tawney – May 1, 2008 7:18 PM

Hi Nini: We are happy to live in Brookings & you are right, it does rain more up your way in Portland, however, we still get a lot of rain!! Brookings can be wet in the winter, with most of its rain falling between November and April. Still, we can expect sunny days in between storms and enjoy the pleasant temperatures that can reach in the 70's even in February.

Brookings has its own local micro climate that keeps the weather mild all year round, resulting in the area being know as the Home of Winter Flowers and as Oregon’s Banana Belt. Rainfall averages between 80 and 100 inches a year with an average summer high temperature of 69 degrees and an average yearly low of 42 degrees.

I know how you feel about Petaluma as I do about Sebastopol...we both would love it in Sonoma!!!! Have a GREAT day!! Marie

Dear Anonymous: Thank you for your "friendly" advice!! I am consumed with the 2009 Dream Home...you are right once again...however, the obsession comes with playful dreaming...and, this contest would change my life...if I did actually get picked!! But, it would change for many positive reasons...like family!!!! There is nothing more important in life than family & being able to live closer to mine is such a wonderful "DREAM!!!" Thank you so much for posting a nice comment!! Marie Miller

Yes, mon amie, a definite 'French Connection' in my past, toned down with a dash of British (which shows in my dry sense of humor) Must be why the perfect picnic for me is a good wine, a freshly baked baguette, and some heavenly cheeses. Afternoons at home require a cup of Earl Grey and English biscuits. Ah, the good life!
More on topic, being Napa Valley born and bred, I couldn't be any more excited about the location of DH09 in the Sonoma wine country. You build it, HGTV, and WHATEVER size, shape, or style, I will absolutely LOVE IT, win OR lose. (WHINE FREE ZONE!)

Posted by DBCoop – May 1, 2008 10:03 PM

Oh my gosh!So this is why I didn't win the '08....I'm supposed to win the '09 Dream Home!
I love California so much, it hurts...it really does! Hubby and I have been looking forward to buying our first home here in SoCal but you can't buy anything good for under 850K.
I was having fantasies about moving to more Northern directions but that too was a fantasy.
I'm SO excited to see that the 09 DH will be built in N-Cal!!
OK, let it all start again :)

Dear fcole: Good Morning! How is Jack? Where is Jack? Will Jack be posting another film for us at the homesite in Sonoma...today is Friday? We are all so anxious to see the plans for the 2009 Dream Home!! My imagination goes wild with anticipation...this home has got to be the ultimate yet..how could it not be...right in the midst of the most beautiful wine country in the world! I find myself daydreaming about Napa Valley Ballooning with hot beverages and pastries awaiting our arrival & a sumptuous post-flight breakfast with sparkling wine before our flight....this must be Yountville that I'm dreaming about...so close to the winner of the 2009 Dream Home in Sonoma!! The town's name is derived from the name of early pioneer George Calvert Yount. Yount was considered responsible for establishing the first vineyard in the Napa Valley. Thank you Mr. Yount & thank you HGTV for allowing me a dream!! Have a GREAT weekend fcole!! Marie Miller

Hello Fellow Dreamers,

Ah, the cool coastal setting of Sonoma, sipping wine at dusk under a perfect moon…oh sorry I was dreaming, again…often. I agree, enough of the sob stories; let us have some fun, by the way, my Black Lab broke her leg a year ago and the vet bills ran in the thousands…do I qualify because I have a sob story? Okay sorry, my cynicism serves as the example of lame reasons why I should be the next winner. No matter, I already live in sunny So. Cal., pay CA taxes, lived through 5 earthquakes, experienced the LA riots and still would not leave this paradise called California. A move to Sonoma area is the icing on the cake of life in the Golden State. Dang, there was a reason for the song California Dreamin’ (Mamas and Papas), imagine your very own vineyard producing “Dream Home Wines” – see already dreaming about the name of the vineyard. This will be a fun and exciting DH, already planning to make several visits, any CA residents let’s set a Saturday in the summer to all meet at the site and dream.

nice to see your two personalities regognizing each other and wanting to meet Marie , I mean Hans, I mean who was the other one?

Fcole, regarding the 2009 Sonoma Dream Home,
to quote "Josh Billings" Consider the postage stamp: its usefulness consists in the ability to stick to one thing till it gets there! I can hardly wait to see this dream home located in a dreamland!

Posted by Charlottenoel – May 2, 2008 3:53 PM

I love all the HGTV dream homes - I am an avid HGTV watcher - the green home is small but a beautiful retirement place - the new location in the Napa Valley would be heaven.

Posted by DANA FOX – May 2, 2008 4:54 PM

I have a question for the Designer ....

Will the Dream Home be earthquake safe? I'm a Native Californian and am curious.

Posted by Cerise – May 2, 2008 9:11 PM

I saw a few comments about the Green Home. The size of the home is perfect for an older couple (like us!). Just enough room to "get away" from each other, but still cozy! I love the Green Home!

Posted by CC – May 2, 2008 9:13 PM

Gee, all this time I thought this blog was about the HGTV dream home... It appears to be an exercise in one-upmanship (I think I made that word up. Please no grammar corrections!)
Hey! I survived the earthquakes in the bay area in 1956 or 1957... all of our kitchen cabinets hung off the walls, with the contents of the upper cupboards thrown across the kitchen! (I didn't know nails were that long!) All the books and Mom's knick knacks jumped off the shelves, and my sister's and my piggybanks broke, but my brother's didn't...My mom was hysterical and didn't know whether to stay in the house or take us outside. When we went outside, we could see the hills literally rolling and the power poles bowing to each other in a bizarre sort of dance.
My mom was born and raised in San Francisco, and she had never been in an earthquake like that! In addition to fire drills, we had earthquake drills in school... ah, the good old days...

Ok, did I increase my chances any? Did I scare any of you off? Didn't think so... ;-)

We've been to the California wine country & loved it!!! Tomorrow is our 40th Wedding Anniversary...I'd love the Green Home in South Carolina!!! Please take us from the cold Vermont climate & place us in Carolina in the morning!
California is beautiful but it would be finer in Carolina for us!

History Of Grapevines - By: Patrick Malcolm

The first documentation of grapevines growing in the Americas was discovered in researching the logbook of navigator Giovanni de Verazzano, who reported in 1504 that a large "white grape" was vigorously growing at Cape Fear, North Carolina. The English explorer of the New World, Sir Walter Raleigh, confirmed in a letter to Arthur Barlowe in 1585, the discovery of a white grape (scuppernong), when he landed in coastal North Carolina.

The 1500's ancient discovery of native grapevines growing in America was followed by numerous Spanish settlements along the coast of the United States where introduced old world grapevines were planted alongside the native American grapevines. That interplanting resulted in natural crosses of hybrid grapevines, a blending of the characteristics of both types. The French navigators were also exploring territories and lands surrounding Louisiana and were planting European grape vine varieties from the South of France, that also hybridized with native American grapevines. The English settlers established colonies in 1733 in Savannah, Georgia and Fort Frederica, on Saint Simon's Island, Georgia, under General James Oglethorpe, who was the first Governor of Georgia. These English colonies brought in seeds of grapes from Europe that were planted and grown in small farm vineyards. Those transplants intermixed with native grapevines that grew in woods nearby, and this intermixing resulted in new grape hybrids that were spread by the Indians and colonists everywhere. It is believed that these hybrids produced some selections such as Concord, Niagara, Catawba, and others that were identified as growing naturally in the woods by the great American explorer William Bartram, in his book, Travels, as Vitis labrusca by botanists today.

This blog reminds me of a script right out of Hollywood. I smell a romance between Marie Miller and DBCoop, which I will now call Coop, as in Gary. I suspect MM might be a guy in the closet and Coop might be from Canada. Who else but Anon could pull the strings. Identifiy your self Anon. Coop, got H.H. a long time ago. Still working on the Hans off.. This is fun. MM, sust wait until the Green Home contest is over and deb gets on this blog. She posts a lot. Pleasant dreams.

Wow, If only.......My family & husbands family all there in the area. We had the privledge once to live there in Napa the year we were married. I want to go home.

Posted by Lonely in SoCal – May 5, 2008 8:15 PM

LMAO. The knew there was a reason the Green House didn't tickle my fancy (besides the THREE bedrooms???). I've always told my kids (THREE) that we'd have a pacel of land where we could all build our own homes and I could watch my grandkids growup together. Especially, since I had to work so hard I don't remember my own sons growing up. Did I tell you I grew up 30 miles south of this 2009 Dream Home and raised my kids in Oregon. Did you see Oregon Street?

I wish everyone the best of luck but, I think this one is meant to be ours. God bless us all...pleeeeze.

This note comes to you from the Hudson Valley in New York. For eight and half years my husband and I lived in CA in the Torrance area while he worked at a tech firm there. It was wonderful to experience the vast beauty of CA. form the beauty of the diversity of people to the diversity of the land. It broadened our outlook and changed our outlook on life in general.
Winters here are cold and our hearts and thoughts are often (all year long) with CA.
We visited Sonoma one time (not long enough)and it felt like home.
What a joy to be able to enter the contest as it presents itself and dream of living once again in beautful California.
Best Wishes as you continue construction.

Sorry about my last post. Too much wine, I guess...or interruptions. I still chuckle over my favorite trio, Coop, MM and Anon. Hey, Coop. still wondering about a dog? Please consider the Dandy Dinmont. No barking, no shedding, just an occasional brushing to remove the undercoat. They don't like to be groomed to show dog quality as they resent being seen as a beauty contestent They just want to be respected as a loyal, faithful family member. And they smile. I have it on a fragile film. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE FLOOR PLANS FOR THE DR09. When, fcole, can we expect them? Love you, HGTV.

Posted by Katydid – May 7, 2008 7:58 PM

Katydid:

If this blog were a script from Hollywood, it would go straight to video.....

....maybe not even that far. Maybe documentary t.v. The "REAL WORLD" of HGTV!!!

Seven bloggers, picked to live in an HGTV Dream Home who agree to have their lives taped. Will MM and Coop hook up? Will MM be caught posting as her alternate personality of HH (or versa-visa)? And what of the dog behind the screen? Who will be the last one standing and who will have to make due with the Green Home?!?!?!?!

(HGTV: remember,if you choose to use my idea, I want royalties!!! AND DON'T LET Marie Miller take credit for it!!! tee hee)

FCOLE: we need something else to keep us busy!

Posted by Jennifer – May 7, 2008 9:10 PM

God Bless, and Good Luck to us all. The Green home will go to persons, that hopefully will appreciate the opportunity to make a eco-difference in the world. "Go Greenies"

Posted by SoCal Gal – May 9, 2008 11:48 AM

If I win the Sonoma house, I would never move away. I've been wanting to come back to California for years! Someone on here posted they should make the houses affordable for the average person. I agree as the taxes and insurance could deter one from being able to keep the home.
