I am truly impressed with the enthusiasm and attention to detail many of you have brought to the examination of each clue to the location of the next HGTV Dream Home. Last week's clue involved a project from Carter Can, in which Carter built a screen door using redwood. The phrase "Look Behind the Door" wasn't meant to be taken literally, just that you could look around on the page and maybe find a couple of clues.
Some of you did try to look behind that door, however, and several have claimed to see a dog. Many have even identified the breed of this mysterious canine as a Siberian husky. I can't see the dog, but that could just be me. I was never able to see the image in any of those Magic Eye posters that were popular back in the '90s. No matter how long I stared, I could never see the spaceship, unicorn, dolphins jumping over a rainbow or whatever else was supposed to magically leap out of the poster in 3-D glory. The only thing that ever leaped for me was my level of irritation.
I've put up a large version of the image from Carter's project here. At least I think this is the image with a husky supposedly lurking in the shadows there are also a handful of others on the Carter article. Let me know if this isn't the one. And if there really is a dog, it doesn't have anything to do with the location of the next HGTV Dream Home. Honestly, the main clue was that the door was made from redwood, and I also put a link to this article over on the right side of the page. If you clicked on to read about "The Magificent Redwood," there was one more clue at the bottom of that page. But a dog? Never part of the plan.
Speaking of the location, I've seen an early version of the video, where house planner Jack Thomasson takes a tour of the town. It's really cool, and it's coming soon. How soon? Less than two weeks. Check back next week and I'll try to drop one more clue, along with a date for the premiere of the video.

Haha ... I see it. It is in the area of the "R H" image. The doggy's nose is in the "H", ffor those who saw the initials in the screen. Glad you cleared some things up. Looking forward to Jack's video. (What? There's an "RH" in there now, too? I still don't see the dog. fc)
Posted by Anonymous – April 4, 2008 11:13 AM
I saw the 'RH' when I looked at it before...but I can't see the dog either. fc...when I click on the above link referencing the larger image, nothing comes up.....did you post it yet? Thanks for the fun!

Dear HGTV: I still see grapevines on an arbor behind the door (after all, your clue did say to check BEHIND the door, however, I have to agree that the main clue was "Redwood" (Northern California is famous for many Redwood sanctuaries, including the Armstrong State Reserve) & I certainly picked up the clue from the Magnificent Redwoods..."Armstrong State Reserve!!" Wow, the word "Armstrong" cannot be ignored!!! That is why I'm almost positive I have the location of the 2009 Dream Home: It will be build in Sonoma, California, in the Arstrong Estates!! As far as the shadows outside..it does appear that you can see the initials "RH" formed by the shadows from the vines against the back fense?? Could these be the initials of the contractor that will be building my 2009 Dream Home? Anyway, I can hardly wait for the next clue!!! Thank you HGTV for the mystery & fun!!

FCOLE: I don't see a dog but i do see a shadow that looks more like someon'e feet and legs that got in the photo. but not a dog. Too much misreading of the clues i think....
Posted by ocean blue – April 4, 2008 11:41 AM
To Robin: I think you might be right when you said you didn't think "behind the door" meant through the screen necessarily...rather, behind the door meant as you enter the building. As you enter, the only thing seen "behind the door" is a little tree, a redwood tree (for sure)!! We are straining too hard when it's right in front of our eyes!!! We have all been too hung up on too many illusions...but it has been fun trying to see every little thing in the image!! I did say that the little redwood tree was one of the clues in one of my first comments about Clue #9! I'm happy for the clarification about the dog!! Anyway, I liked your comment!

Fcole says another clue at the bottom of the bottom of the page and I'm drawn to green again. I was feeling really good about my choices of Redwood City and Woodside, but now I'm thinking green again. Off of HWY 1 aka Redwood Highway in Marin is Greenbrae, right next to Ross Ca. I love driving through that valley looking up and the wooded hills. I see a lot of other folks from NCAL on the blog, so if you ever get a chance to drive over through Fairfax and up past Apline Lake, right after the bridge is a great hike on the Cataract Trail. About a dozon waterfalls on this hike and truly beautiful.
Here's the link.

I wasn't making fun of you, fcole, in my first post. I was laughing because that was the first time I'd seen the dog. Your blowing up the picture for us helped me see it. Wish I could show it to you ... his ears are defined by the vines right behind the wind chimes. He's kind of ghostly with a huge head. It helps me to see him better if I close my right eye and look with my left eye only.
Darn. Now I see a ghost toddler running across the patio. His head is blurry. :)
Looked at some pictures of Ferndale, CA last night. Gorgeous area. Can't wait for the reveal.
Posted by Anonymous – April 4, 2008 12:24 PM
My guess is near Ferndale, CA.
Posted by jw – April 4, 2008 12:29 PM
I think it is in humboldt county. heart of the beautiful redwoods. maybe in fortuna or ferndale?
Posted by ocean blue – April 4, 2008 12:36 PM
On the smaller picture of "look behind the door" all I could see was shadows. In the larger picture I can see a shadow that may look like a dog. The ears are right above the diagonal strip of redwood on the bottom right and it looks like a side profile of a white dogs head. Oh well I never thought that was a clue. I still think maybe Guerneville or Duncans Mills.
Posted by Vicki – April 4, 2008 12:37 PM
I KNOW, I know it for sure; it's going to be in Death Valley, CA. I could see the sand in the planter with the little tree inside the "redwood door" room, that's REALLY where FCOLE was trying to direct us! Anyway, what I'd like to know---OK, PAY ATTENTION---QUESTION FOR FCOLE: HOW MUCH WOULD IT COST TO GET A COPY OF THAT EARLY VERSION OF THE VIDEO YOU JUST MENTIONED OVERNIGHTED TO MY HOME ADDRESS? MY CREDIT CARD INFO AND SHIPPING ADDRESS FOLLOW: ;)

Fcole, thanks for the clarification that there is NO dog. I have been having such a great time reading everyones blogs, I love how the imaginations of some of really jump started everyones enthusiasm. I never did see the dog but it was a fun thought. I do wish people would read everyones blogs before they post answeres like..alaska and such.I have really enjoyed reading this every morning and looking for more clues while I am having my morning coffee. I live in Washington so even though I am sad that it's not built here, I am excited for the possibilies of winning a home in California! What a gorgeous state! I'm going to keep reading and enjoying. Keep writing within peoples blogs, it's fun to read. Have a great day everyone!
Judi from Washington.

fc; it is not the whole dog we (Julie and I ) see but just the head facing left. OK, when you enlarge the picture, it does distort it a little, and it looks like a shadow of the trees or grape vines whichever they are. The head of the "mystery dog" is in the bottom half of the screen just under the cross bar.Maybe if you squint? Thanks for playing! California is an awesome state!
Posted by Jan – April 4, 2008 12:52 PM
I'm with you FC. I've always had a hard time with illusions. I looked and I still only see shadows from the surrounding trees. I've been told to open my minds eye. I am so glad FC himself stated, the clue was the redwood forest link, nothing else,no hidden pictures or meanings. That being said, Ca. state parks are mentioned in resources. Theres a few of them, and not far from portola valley
Posted by annie – April 4, 2008 12:57 PM
I don't see the dog either. I keep changing my mind about the location. I am thinking its Guerneville now. I am looking forward to the next clue! Thanks for the fun fcole!!!
Posted by Laurel – April 4, 2008 1:45 PM
OK, now I see the faint shadow of a dog figure behind the door, but it's only tree limb shadows that look dog-like. Kind of like clouds that look like polar bears (tee hee). Anyhooo, love what HGTV had decided to do, there's a reason they call it California dreamin', and living there is truly dreamy. Love redwoods, Love Sonoma and the whole bay area! I hope the town they tour includes the Sonoma Plaza where you can wander around through the trees and browse wonderful art shows, listen to great music, buy crafts, or just watch the ducks be silly in the pond. I must have this house! April 27th is the Petaluma antique fair, hopefully they'll do some film of the designer (Linda Woodrum?) rambling through this great event looking for treasures. I hope they're going back to the good stuff this year with a wine country european flair rather than the ultra modern and cold feeling san francisco city style.

Gotta be Duncan Mills.........
Posted by Deb – April 4, 2008 3:53 PM
isn't that the dog laying right outside of the screen door? I'm thinking Redwood City too, although that might be too easy
Posted by Lorri – April 4, 2008 4:18 PM
The 31st state is California. Bodega Bay sits on the ocean. If you drive up the road behind the town you will be on a mountain in the redwoods. I believe you will be building in or near Bodega Bay, California.
Posted by Stacey – April 4, 2008 4:35 PM
Fcole, was the clue at the bottom of the page as we suspect, Duncan Mills? (Nope! You're trying to hard, can't see the forest for the trees. fc)

Dear fcole,
Thank you for clarifying your last clues for everyone. I'm looking forward to Jack's next video! Will we also be seeing some video soon of the Islamorada DH winner's celebration, I hope? It was definitely a fantastic prize!.... My guess on the next DH is still north of SF, most likely in Sonoma County near the Russian River, although I was originally hoping for the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Posted by stagemom – April 4, 2008 4:38 PM
Though I have never believed the mysterious SHADOW that looks like a DOG (or a ROCKING HORSE) has had anything to do with the clues, I can tell you where to FIND it.
LOOK BELOW THE HORIZONTAL BRACE IN THE SCREEN DOOR. (It's head is framed between the horizontal and diagonal braces). It's nose faces the door latch and it's (would be) front feet extend below the diagonal brace.
I can also see the SHADOW that looks like an RH in the misty blur above the horizontal brace. But what was clearly out of place on that page all along was the REDWOOD ARTICLE where it has now been confirmed the REAL CLUE lies.
Thanks for the fun!!!
Posted by Jennifer – April 4, 2008 4:41 PM
I could never see the dog in the pictures, even on the larger one. I did see however the R and H but that was after looking very hard at the pictures. I figured out the link between the Redwood parts though and I know its going to be in California. My guess would be Portola, CA which has redwoods surrounding it and is near the bay area.

I forgot all about Magic Eye posters. I think I saw one for a split second... then I moved adn could never see it again. I always thought something was wrong with me because all of the other kids claimed to see them. LOL. That was trip down memory lane. Thanks fcole.
I googled (is that supposed to be capitalized???) Duncan Mills and Guerneville. Duncan Mills is tiiiny (under 200 people)and there doesn't seem to be much of a view (at least from the pics I found). But, I love Guerneville. The pics I found of the town are beautiful plus it's 5 minutes away from the Redwood Reserve, 20 minutes from the Sonoma Coast (even better)and (best of all)it's in the Russian River wine region. If the DH09 is anywhere in this area, the winner will have a fantastic location!
Posted by R. McCoy – April 4, 2008 5:16 PM
In the article you referenced there is a phrase "monarchs of the mist" that refers to the redwood. Is this a clue? Are there other "monarchs" we should be looking for? Butterflies perhaps?
Posted by Anonymous – April 4, 2008 5:44 PM
I'm thinking it's in forestville ,area looks like the area where jack shoot the video. and it has lots of trees including apple trees. the air looks clean and pure.

DBCoop: Well, you think it's Death Valley, and some of your reasons are quite good. I think for sure it is Alcatraz....Zebra, stripes? All this talk about dogs....I might have to have "the hair of the dog" in the morning. I haven't got a clue as to where the DH09 is going to be built in CA. Have any of you bloggers done an aerial view of the location you have picked? I can't remember any clues relating to Russia (as in river), but so many beautiful other places are suggested by you Californians. I'll have confused dreams tonight, but I wish you all more pleasant ones. FCOLE: You are the greatest. Much love to you and HGTV.
Posted by Katydid – April 4, 2008 6:45 PM
Okay, we have the Redwood Door, and the last sentence talks about walking among the Redwoods.
Fcole, by chance in HGTV Dream Home '09 going to be in Mill Valley? Home of Muir Woods, 26 minutes from San Francisco, and if you drive up scenic Highway 1, you can go right by Mt. Tamalpais.
Posted by Lori – April 4, 2008 6:51 PM
Well, I'm stupid, here i was looking for a real dog. Hadn't seen one on the pic before. Finally saw the dog face, it's actually light and shadow the right ear, is at the bottom of the wind-chimes. My guess is for Duncan Mills, there were 3 addresses (group of 3) and two were for Guerneville and one for Duncans Mills. So until I know otherwise, that's my guess.
Posted by cindy – April 4, 2008 6:56 PM
HMMM, "...can't see the (ARMSTRONG) forest for the trees" (WOODS). SO FCOLE, ARE YOU SAYING WE SHOULD BE LOOKING AROUND Armstrong Woods ROAD, WHICH RUNS FROM GUERNEVILLE 2 MILES UP TO THE REDWOOD RESERVE? Wow, your last comment to njgal seems to be full of Hidden Potential....
OK, I'm looking forward to shopping at the Guerneville 5&10, hanging out at Johnson's Beach, and trying my luck at bingo on Thursday nights. See y'all there!

This so beautiful. The Filoli estate, located in Woodside California, is a property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Filoli was the vision of Mr. & Mrs. William Bowers Bourn II, owners of the Empire Gold Mine in Grass Valley. The word "Filoli" comes from the first two letters of the words Fight, Love, and Live ("to fight for a just cause; to love your fellow man; and to live a good life" was the credo of the estate's owners). Designed by California architect Willis Polk, the Georgian Revival mansion is surrounded by 16 acres of formal gardens and over 600 acres of woods; its reflecting pools, formal gardens, arbors and shady walks were all planned to blend harmoniously with the nearby San Andreas hills. The Filoli garden is considered one of the finest examples of a private estates garden representing the "Golden Age of American Gardens". The estate is open for tours.

Dear Fcole: It amazes me that people are still talking about the Husky dog...even after you have told them that it has nothing to do with where the Dream Home will be built. Seeing the dog between the shawdows is like seeing bears in the clouds..come on..let's stick with the clues!! We know that it has to do with Redwood and the article about "The Magificent Redwood!!" It would be my suggestion that everyone read that article...'cause that is where they will find the greatest clue of all!! It speaks of the "Armstrong State Reserve!!" Wow, the word "Armstrong" cannot be ignored as I've stated now so many times!!! Certainly the RH does not mean Redwood Heights in Oakland. Redwood road runs near the Oakland Hills where the big fire was. It overlooks San Francisco and the bay, etc. Hope it's not there. Just adding more fuel to all your fires, no pun intended.

Ok I felt a little foolish joining in on this little dog hunt, but curiosity got the better of me. I saw the dog in the RH, I saw the RH really fast, and I see the the dog is the H also the top of the H is the dogs ears and I'll say its a husky.... I don't however see the dog that is BELOW the horizontal brace, Rocking horse, Maby. not a dog though.. My Fiancee thinks I've lot my mind. lol

Ok it's not Duncans Mills. How about Forestville. All my maybes are turning out incorrect. lol
Posted by Vicki – April 4, 2008 10:57 PM
I, too, believe that the 2009 HGTV Dream Home may be located in the North Bay region. Even so, a part of me still tells me that it could be located in the South Bay hills region as well as the Santa Cruz area. Historic, more or less set away from the hustle and bustle of the urban areas - San Francisco, Oakland, and the Silicon Valley - yet in proximity (less than hour) of its cultural offerings. These are some aspects that a "Dream Home" location can possess. That way, there would always be something to do, if the desire to do so ever arises.
Nevertheless, I would be grateful just of the opportunity to win the 2009 HGTV Dream Home, regardless of where it is built.

I've never really been to California and it's right next door. I stayed overnight in La Jolla once, so I am no expert on California places. The pictures of the redwood trees are very impressive though. I'll leave the guessing to y'all who are more knowledgeable about California geography. Sounds like a great place.

Wow, Could it be in Humbolt Co. Lets see how about Arcata or even Scotia or maybe Garberville.
Possibly Eureka. That is a Beautiful town right on the coast up North in CA.
It could even be Ferndale,I guess I will just have to wait.Or is it Fortuna.
I can hardly wait to find out.
We live up around Clearlake and it is one of the most beatiful Manmade lakes around. Well known for their Bass Tournaments.
I don't live that far from the redwoods maybe two hrs. away. I am very anxious to see where they are building the new Home.
Posted by Charla Rich – April 5, 2008 6:21 AM
Well, I know nothing about northern California. I'm guessing that is where the redwoods are. And the guess at the bottom of the page? Other bloggers have said it is near Guerneville, so I would guess that might be where it is, or somewhere near there. I have never heard of it, but as I stated, I don't know alot about California. Sure would be nice to learn though, I am an adventurer. Good luck everyone.
Posted by deb – April 5, 2008 8:19 AM
I hope they don't build it in California. Not 1 dreamhome owner has been able to hold onto the home because of taxes. Drop it in California with their high tax rates and that streak will definitely continue.
Posted by mstewart – April 5, 2008 8:31 AM
I have to agree with Marie Miller who seems to know a lot about the Sonoma region. I feel that most of the earlier clues led to the Sonoma county region. I now think that it is narrowed down to the town of Sonoma and the home will be built in the Armstrong Estates (Craftsman Style homes, very expensive $3,000,0000+/-).
Posted by Lydia P – April 5, 2008 8:38 AM
Dear Ynotme: Hold on to your hat...'cause I truly believe that the next Dream Home winner will have the opportunity to live in Sonoma, California & enjoy the town that includes the Sonoma Plaza where you can wander around through the trees and browse wonderful art shows, listen to great music, buy crafts, or just watch the ducks be silly in the pond. Sonoma, California, is the location & the home will be built in the Armstrong Estates! I'm more excited than words can express!!

Posted by DBCoop – April 5, 2008 12:56 PM
This is my first time looking at the clues but from what I see to date I'd placed the house somewhere just north of San Francisco between Mill Valley and Petaluma within 5 miles of the Redwood Highway. It's probably in the lower half of that area.

Hello, well the clues are tellin me; wineries(grapes), salmom(fish), golfing(big green), redwood(forest, valley)and Bay(any bay town?). I am guessing that the 2009 dream home will be located in the Redwood Valley area, which includes anything north of Sacremento. That's a big area, so I'll condense a little. My best guess is Eureka. It has golfing, Bayside, and Bayview towns close by, it is near the Redwood Valley/Redwood Parks, the Salmon Mountains, and several wineries. Of course, I'm also thinking of the Mendocino area; (Sonoma Lake, Clear Lake, and Bodega Bay) they are all close to Guerneville, CA which is home to Armstrong woods state reserve....When you know the location, let me know how close my guess is!
Posted by D. Reed – April 5, 2008 5:06 PM
Sounds like the Santa Rosa area possibly. That's a very beautiful area.Close to the San Francisco Bay area, close to the redwoods, close to the wine country. Sure hope I'm right, however, I'm sure that wherever it is will be great, since HGTV has a way of picking great places. Thanks for giving us so much to look forward to and dream about, even though we haven't been the winner yet.

People, get outside, smell the flowers of spring …. Oh, that’s right, here in CA, it’s always spring or summer. Outside bound… because I have a life and the redwoods smell sooo good…oops, an unconscious slip.

It has to be Mendocino County. The Skunk Train has different trains & routes, just to name a few:
Sacramento River Train- Boards in Woodland- It has gold exterior reflecting the area's gold rush & 1,000 ft. of waves that are tribute to the Scramento River, painted on the train.
Sierra Dinner Train- Leaves Oakdale to Yosemite Nat'l Park.
Yellow Sunset BBQ Skunk Train- Leaves Ft. Bragg
to Willits down the redwood route.
I think it will be near Ft Bragg (where the Pacific meets the Redwoods) There is a glass bch in Ft Bragg .

I don't think we are quite there yet! I think the next clue will put the 2009 Dream House in:
Sonoma County's, Healdsburg, Ca.
But then again, I saw the Siberian Husky and the RH on the screen door.
Posted by Jill R. – April 6, 2008 1:47 AM
I've done a little looking on google earth and google maps. The Armstrong Estates in Sonoma just don't match up with the video showing the area where the house is being built. That area looks more like the area around Guerneville where the Armstrong Redwood Preserve is. So, I'm guessing it will be somewhere in that area.

To: Lydia P.
Thank you for your vote of confidence...we are now two people that believe the 2009 Dream Home will be build in the Armstrong Estates!! I had another thought about the initials RH that can be clearly seen in the shadows of Clue #10...duh...these could stand for the "Redwood Highway!!" The Redwood Highway, US 101, is perhaps the most historic highway in California. It follows the route the Spanish explorer Juan Gaspar de Portola followed in 1769, which later became El Camino Real, the King's Highway. This historic road connected the 21 missions of California and served as the main north/south road in California until the 1920s. North of San Francisco it is known as the "Redwood Highway," which is considered by many to be the most scenic road in California. At one time its route followed the famous Avenue of the Giants, which goes by the tallest trees in the world located in the Redwood State and National Parks. Even though this road was surpassed by US 99 and later I-5, it remains an important road linking cities along the coast of California. Just another thought!!

I think the biggest question is how far away can you go from portola valley and still be "not to far from the mark." It seems to me thats the biggest clue. The Sonoma area sounds remarkable, but it's a couple hours away. That's pretty far, I would think. He mentions getting in hot water, seems like FC said for a reason

I think what Fcole is saying about the Resources at the bottom of the page ,one is different than the others, there is a P.O. Box 123, where the others all have addresses. I took that to mean a rural route. I put several of the clue's together - Vet,BBQ,Yellow, Redwood Door and came up with The Skunk Train. One of the trains name is Yellow Sunset BBQ. The Vet clue on the scrabble board-Ft Bragg (which is no longer a fort)and also you take your dogs to the Botanicals Gardens without a lease and let them run around free. I could be wrong about all this, check it out and see what you think. The Skunk Train does go to several locations and each train has a theme, so it could be any of the towns on the route, there are 4 loading stations. There is a little town near Mendocino Village called LITTLE RIVER and that is a possible location, it sits on a bluff overlooking the Beach, the acreage looks sorta like the tease video Jack did. I hope we get another clue soon, then we can narrow it down.

In the picture for clue #10, I am not seeing the dog. I do see the initials RH. Above the H I see a child's face. Kind of freaky to me.
No matter where in California they build the 2009 Dream Home, I will enter to win. My parents lived out there in 1958, my mom said it wasn't for her cuz she didn't like the earthquakes. I'll be ready to move out there when I win the 2009 Dream Home.

Last weekend we went down to San Mateo area and went to Bay Meadows. On the drive...I kept looking at the hills around the south bay and any one of the locations looks like the area where Jack was. Then we came up through Marin and again I seen the hills where Jack sat. Yesterday we took a drive over to Sonoma....went across hwy 12 over to the square and all those hills looked like where Jack was. Jack could be anywhere around the bay. There are beautiful hilltop lacations all around the bay and every one of them has the most spectacular views. I know it's going to be an amazing home no matter where it is. Ready for another clue fcole.

Hi fcole! Our huckleberry friend! I'm on pine cones & needles waiting for the town reveal... California Redwoods/Sonoma wine country in the same sentence, I can't get Louis 'Armstrong's' tune/lyrics out of my head... when thinking of 2009 next 'Dream Home' location...
'WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD' indeed...
I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
The colours of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shakin' hands, sayin' "How do you do?"
They're really saying "I love you" HGTV/Scripps

I believe it will be built in Pacific Grove, California. I think the clues from the red wood trees mentioned the words grove and monarch. Thousands of Monarch butterflies winter every year in a small grove of trees in Pacific Grove.

I think that it is going to be in Guerneville, California because at the bottom of the screen it shows like the resources or something, it says the location of it is Guerneville, California. So that is what I think.

View of a bay? Up on the hills? Golfing nearby? Could just possibly be further south than anyone's mentioned - LA area? Rolling Hills Estates? Not being a Californio - I just note that there's one narrow, cutoff letter (maybe - depends on the eyes) just to the right of "RH" that looks like "E". And that city's website talks about greening, preserving canyons, etc., too.

Fcole,
Concidering all the clues from Carter working on the redwwod doors, and other clues within the picture, I am covienced that the
(RH)represents, the follwing, since HGTV supports such acts.
(Riparian Habitats*). Our plant communities supporting woody vegetation found along rivers, creeks and streams. Riparian habitat can range from a dense thicket of shrubs to a closed canopy of large mature trees covered by vines. Riparian systems are one of our most important and most neglected, renewable natural resources. While small in total area when compared to California’s size, they are of special value as wildlife habitat. Over 135 species of California birds such as the Willow Flycatcher, Yellow-billed Cuckoo and Red-shouldered Hawk either completely depend upon riparian habitats or use them preferentially at some stage of their life history. Riparian habitat provides food, nesting habitat, cover, and migration corridors. Another 90 species of mammals, reptiles, invertebrates and amphibians such as California red-legged frog, Valley elderberry longhorn beetle and riparian brush rabbit depend on California’s riparian habitats. Riparian habitat also provides riverbank protection, erosion control and improved water quality, as well as numerous recreational and aesthetic values. I want to say that many of the members as well, as I take note to heart when it comes to using our natural habitat resource, by growing fruits, veggies, flowers, so the hummingbirds and bees can continue their life as well as multiply our foods.
Hgtv,
I know that since carpooling was implimented we have saved billions of dollars by not needing new asfault for repairing and or making new freeways and streets, but we also keep money in our pockets from paying these repairs.I thank you for bringing our attention to conservation I am sure we all make a difference, by making wise choices when it comes to recycling our cans, plastics and donation of our clothes to those in need. I am greatful for the engineers whom aknowledged and created vehicles that does not require the use of only gasoline, like the Yukon and other newer cars and trucks.
I hope that this will continue until not one automobile will comsume Gasoline. Our world will be much cleaner as well as the amount of illnesses that is due to the carbonioxzide emitted now, this will also save billions of dollars for health care, and the bonus will be, not burnning up our OZONE layer. It's not to late to start today. I all for the green.

FCOLE: I too can't figure out where the dog or the rh is But I did get your clue "redwood". The door is made of redwood and then the article about redwood. It is alot of fun to read everyone's ideas and suggestions.
FCOLE since Carter was there you could ask him if there is a dog there at the location. Or ask him for a copy of that particular show before it was produced for tv veiwing.. So you can watch it and all the out takes. That could clear up the dog ? It could walk through one of the scenes or bark at them. I'm guessing! I'm looking for the next clue! Bring it on fCOLE

Good Morning Fcole! I have really enjoyed collecting my clues and researching them. I have also enjoyed reading the blogs and everyone else's comments. After all my searching I must say that I think that Marie Miller has got it! I agree with her, as I have thought Sonoma was the location and after seeing Armstrong in the clues and reading Marie's blog I'm with her. Armstrong Estates is where my clues have led me as well. Good job!

I have a very high resolution monitor and I can’t see any dog. It is shadows and leaves on the ground.
If you see a dog you are either dreaming or on drugs.
And for those who still can’t grasp the clues ITS IN CALIFORNIA!!!!!!

The only thing I remember about California is... I think I was a hippie there in San Francisco back in the 60's. Just kidding. Has anyone else seen the two pencils that are the tie backs for the window curtains? Pencils are made from cedar and cedar grows in California. And it looks like a green bowl, of some sort, in the lower right hand corner. Does anyone see that? Tho I've tried I've not seen the dog. My today city guesses are: Redwood City, Alturas, Palo Alto, Cresant City and Cedar Grove. Found a site online where ALL the city's in California are listed...I'm sure cutting and pasting skills would not be allowed. smile. Good luck everyone!

Posted by DBCoop – April 8, 2008 12:26 AM
Fcole didn't say there was no RH on the screen door, so maybe there really is. I dismissed it along with Shadow the Dog. But, if it is really there (and he did say we could find a couple of clues on the page), maybe the RH could stand for what others have said; Redwood Hwy. and/or Riparian Habitats. Both of those are in Healdsburg along with most of the clues so far. And the city also uses a lot of geothermal energy (from a previous blogger) which HGTV supports (GO GREEN). Maybe I've just stayed up too late! Thinking too hard, too???

I really, really researched the area & believe with the clues given, it can only be there!! And, I am more excited than words can express!! This area is absolutely breathtaking, with all the vineyards & wineries..can you imagine taking a balloon ride over all that heaven? I participated in a yearly wine-tasting event there once & it was GREAT!! All the wineries participate..all you have to do is purchase a wine glass...that gives you the invitation to all the wineries...you not only get to taste all the delicious wines, but they also serve culinary delights!! It was a day I will never forget! Anyway, thank you for your support...I can hardly wait for the next clue! Love you HGTV,

I put the two clues together pertola & redwoods.
There is a Pertola Redwoods State Park. The dreamhome 09 location could be near it! Has one of the tallest Redwoods there. 300 ft tall.
???????FOR FCOLE~~~~~~~~ will you answer my survey, please ?
IS THE DREAMHOME 09 located near the Pertola Redwoods State Park? yes or no
if no: Do I go north, south, east or west?
Or is it located near the pertola redwoods state park road???
yes or no
if no: Do I go north, south, east or west ?
Or is it located near Humboldt redwoods state park?
yes or no
If no: Do I go north, south, east or west?
Or in EUREKA? Have I found it?
yes or no
Do I go north, south, east or west?
Or do I stay put?
Am I close or way off?
Who is the closest guesser?
Can I have initials of the closest guesser?
Please answer my ????'s I know you can not give me exact location but a little more in approximation would be even very appreciated...
When at google maps I found a Carter House Inn & Restaurants.... A beautiful victorian house in
Eureka, California...
Who knows maybe Carter was part of the clue too! It was near a Sequoia park & zoo, lost coast and a humboldt redwood forest and a humboldt fort! Carter had to use hmmm bolts to help hold the redwood screendoor together in the house. (bad humor) ha ha! makes since to me..though
Then I like the Armstrong theory someone else mentioned as well.
Only fcole and his hgtv friends can help us figure this one out! Please tell us lost (frustrated) bloggers where it is and we would love explanations for each clue too..... please!

????????? for fcole
you said in someone's blog it's not in Duncan Mills, we can't see the forest for the trees.. we are so caught up on the little things we can't see the big picture right!
Are you saying it's not necessarily anything to do with the redwood as in title to the place but meant only as a clue?
So then I feel like it is located near a "forest" area not necessarily titled redwoods.
Like could it be near " Sequoia National Forest"?
Or Shasta, Trinity National Forest?
Am I closer on track by looking near Forest closer to the SF bay area or a bay not necessarily the SF bay?

When visiting the Armstrong Redwoods SNR Park, you can head west along the scenic Russian River toward the ocean and spectacular Northern California Coast. The Sonoma Coast State Beach stretches 17 miles from the tiny town of Jenner to Bodega Bay -- a great excuse for a beautiful drive, picnic along the magnificent cliff's and ocean vistas.

Posted by richard veneziano – April 10, 2008 12:32 PM
Dear annie,
My intepretation of how we went north from Portola Valley was from those words you mentioned in your blog; not too far off the mark (I thought - Sonoma's city square which looks like an X or mark from Google Earth)to NOT getting into any hot water (all the hot springs, e.g. Agua Caliente), above Sonoma. Portola Valley could have possibly just represented a valley, too. Maybe super sleuth, Marie Miller, is correct with her guess of the city of Sonoma, or maybe the location is nearby. Nevertheless, it does appear the Dream House will be built in Sonoma County. I didn't think at first all those clues were pertinent to the exact place, but now I do. I can account for almost everyone of them, such as; zebra (as in zebra mussels that can cause damage to our natural waterways - not an animal, a mollusk). Also, ox could represent Sonoma's Ox Roast Festival or the use of oxen in the county's agricultural history. Grief might refer to the "Death March" of Native Americans that were forcibly removed from their lands. I'm sorry this is so long, but I thought you brought up a very interesting point.
P.S. I can't stop looking at these blogs/clues and then researching them. I seem to have gone bonkers; I can't wait until it's over. I don't even know why I am doing this. There's no prize, no benefit to me whatsoever, and I want to stop but can't. I hope I'm not the only one?

However, could the 2009 Dream Home be located within "The Bridges At Rancho Santa Fe" this place is breath taking... really spendy though!!! This requires my Super Mantra! OMMMM OMMMM OMMMM...LOL! Okay back to real life, spring cleaning and yard work awaits. Jacks video premier is next week yes?

Did you know that "Eureka" means =
You have found it!
This is California's state motto!
Eureka, California- Humboldt County
Interestingly enough, the redwoods, the mining era, The word Ox and Wheat on the scrabble board. They make great beer in from the Wheat in Eureka and they have Ox in Eureka. The word Bay, it's all right there!

Check out George Ranch in Sonoma (near the hot springs, vineyards, redwood hwy, etc). This might be the place.

Well i need to keep looking too, so Jill R you are not alone

Sharon Kirkwood ~~~I've been wondering the same thing. It looks like a green glass bowl to me.
Also, do you see what appears to me to be
pencil (with erasures) curtain tie backs?
Does anyone see them?
So eager for new clues.
What kind of potted plant is that?
The cross member on the door appears to be a branch and not a redwood board.
Going bonkers! Can't put it all together.
For no reason other than Google Earth keeps taking me there, Bodega Bay, California.
New clues please!

Jill R. trust me you are not the only one. I went bonkers already too and keep wondering & checking back for what's next? Where's my clue? or are they right? or am I? ...No way, or oh maybe that will work.... Where's that dog "Shadow" at it took my thinking cap is what I'm thinking now!

If the DH09 is in northern Californis, this would be the perfect home for that area. http://www.eplans.com/craftsman_house-plans/HWEPL14530.hwx

DEFINITIVE ANSWER: the shadow lurking behind the screen door is really a KANGAROO, which means that DH09 will be built in the Blue Mtns of Australia...:)
More to the point, either HGTV has had FCOLE working overtime on other future projects (like inventing murky clues to DH10's location), or he's been busy in the basement of the Knoxville office making bootleg copies of the early DH09 location video (starring Jack Thomasson) to secretly sell online. By the way, where is the copy I ordered last week? Just kidding, FCOLE, and any various nefarious HGTV top brass scrutinizing this blog.
I think it's time for me to hop a plane to the Russian River area and do a little firsthand flight-seeing for myself, maybe even a skydive or two to check sites along Armstrong Woods Road. Watch out Main Street Guerneville, I'm on my way.

Please!!! Just build the home already I'm having a brain infarction. It's going to be a palace. Hey! can we have a say, what will go into, or what it will look like. That way Jack could show us his great plans and since he loves to tease it should make for some interesting days ahead. (Like the Cabin)

yes i get it......its in california....monterey bay or right near it cant wait til the next clue this is fun..........
Posted by wendi – April 10, 2008 11:34 PM
I agree with Jan and Mary P, the guessing game is losing appeal but maybe I'm disappointed that the location now seems pretty far from the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and San Francisco. I've been to all these places and the Russian River area (Guerneville/Sonoma) is a totally different location than the Peninsula. Sonoma would be a great location but the clues didn't steer us there before. The Sonoma landscape is more rolling hills, vineyards and cows than redwood forest. And Guerneville, while charming, is quite a small town without the sort of larger appeal I would expect for a Dream Home location. And it wouldn't be the place I'd think about going if I wanted to see redwoods. So I'm totally lost at this point and it's becoming frustrating instead of fun. FCOLE, CAN YOU PLEASE GET US ON TRACK? CAN YOU TELL US WHETHER SOMEONE HAS GUESSED THE LOCATION IN A PARTICULAR BLOG OR GIVE US A SUBSTANTIAL CLUE? THANKS!

Jill R.
I would like to agree, I was one of the first ones to mention the Sebastopol and Bodga Bay area's, they sound soooo nice. But there a couple hours away. I'm from California, and I'm lucky enough to get to go back and visit every now and then. In fact I can't wait to win to move back, anyhow, that's not very near in California's language. Thats the problem I'm having and hopefully FC will clarify a bit for us all.
Thanks

How much longer are we going to have to play this game? Do you even know where the DH is fcole? (Yes, I do know where it is. And so will you next Wednesday. fc)

Eureka, Humboldt County, California !

Oops! There's a Safari West in Santa Rosa where there are real zebras. I'll stick with Healdsburg, CA for at least this moment. But truly, I need a more definitive clue to make a real educated guess. I'm more confused than ever.

One of the other clues is it is known for sunny coastlines and snowy mountains. It could only be Santa Cruz. Sonoma County is not known snow.

fc, could i please get my question answered?
I asked this question and it was never added to the blog. Here was the question, Are the winners piicked by their exact correct answers or will they be put in a hat and drawn from that sorta speak?
Thank you for answering this question.

I saw the DOG!!! There is a bright dot, it is in the door to the right. That is the dog's eye and if you see that, the rest will follow!
Posted by Hailey Jansson – April 16, 2008 8:14 AM
My guess is California.
Posted by Hulya – April 16, 2008 10:05 AM
I see the dog in the lower portion of the door, made up of a shadow. I shall name the dog "Shadow" and call it a day because I never, no - never win - but I love playing the "game".
Posted by Carol Hibbard – April 18, 2008 12:24 PM
I see the dog peeking into the left window maybe from a deck? It looks like Ct. home in the woods? It looks like a shaggy dog infact!
