HGTV Dream Home

Clue #8: Can You Name the 31st State?

Posted by fcole – March 14, 2008 1:58 PM

The last clue pretty much spelled out the state we've selected for the location of HGTV Dream Home 2009, but I'll remove any doubt today. Yes, we're headed to a state known for sunny coastlines, snowy mountains, natural wonders and great style. Got it yet?

That's right, we're heading to California! But that still leaves lots of ground to cover — about 163,000 square miles — and the exact location isn't set yet. Check back next week and I'll share additional hints to narrow it down more.

Finally, the big weekend is here: we're announcing the winner of this year's HGTV Dream Home Giveaway on live television Sunday night! Be sure to watch HGTV at 9pm ET/6pm PT Sunday to see who's moving to the Florida Keys. And remember, we're also giving away a special prize to a home viewer Sunday night: a trip for two to the Florida Keys.

Posted by Sandra – March 14, 2008 2:50 PM

California he're we come!!

So, the clues for Bay and City Lights were leading us to the state, not necessarily the city and many of the scrabble clues apply, not just 3, but please please fcole, explain the Monopoly clue? What's up with that, especially the 3 dice.

The video of Jack could be any mountain top in CA and since fcole said the actual site for the home hasn't been specifically selected yet, the video was probably on a mountain top that has most of the state in the distant background.

Hurray for California! Now we know the state, but we're not any closer to the name of the city than we were before today. The mystery continues! I can't wait for Sunday night to see who wins the 2008 Dream House, hope it's me!

Posted by Linda – March 14, 2008 2:50 PM

okay its got to be San Francisco!!! without a doubt America's most aestically beautiful city! anyone who's ever been there knows this is true-Great choice

I knew it wasn't in Utah. A beautiful place to build a dream home here some day Specially the St. Geroge area. lots of beautiful mountains to look at. My Guess is The Santa Maria Area. Such a beautiful area you have it all near by. Beach, Moutain, water Sun beef bbq. all this talk about bbq makes me hungary.

Posted by emerald – March 14, 2008 2:55 PM

How could I have been so wrong with my guess of UTAH? I was so sure. Oh, well.
Many of you have guessed CA and from what I remember reading on this blog, Santa Cruz seemed to be a popular guess. I'll have to start my research from scratch again. Good Luck to all, can't wait til Sunday. Pleasant dreams and thanks HGTV for all the fun.

Posted by Katydid – March 14, 2008 2:55 PM

definity CA

Posted by Kathy – March 14, 2008 2:57 PM

I think it will be really nice
to have a Dream Home that
is like the California style
homes. It is probably
is in San Francisco Bay Area.
But I thought it was
going to be in Louisiana,
because of all the clues
are the same in Louisiana.

California will be a great
vacation area.

Posted by Sandra – March 14, 2008 3:02 PM

Finally it's narrowed down, so those east of the Colorado river can stop listing thew wrong states. It's Santa Cruz, or Santa Monica

Posted by SHEILA – March 14, 2008 3:08 PM

I THINK IT'S IN SAN JOSE,CA

Posted by KIM GAZOUSKI – March 14, 2008 3:12 PM

For The Record: Who is 'fcole'? Are you the official keeper of secrets? Are you the chief honcho blogger? When it's said that 'fcole' stated the reader/blogger is heading in the wrong direction in the guessing game we're to accept that as gospel? Please identify yourself with title and position with HGTV blogs. (My official title is "Editor, Special Projects." At least that's what it says on my business cards. Don't believe everything you read about me on this blog, though. fc)

South Lake Tahoe has all the words,Deer Park Avenue,Erie Circle, Aloha Drive,Park Avenue,All along the Emerald Bay Road.Cove Way,Cathedral Road, Casino, Palm trees, Windy, All with Golf Courses close by. Do you think this could be the place it is being built? I would hate to think of it being a timeshare....LOL

Posted by Ella – March 14, 2008 3:17 PM

Looked up city of lights and besides Paris, San Francisco's Treasure Island was know for being called "floating city of lights" back in 1939. Not sure if that will mean anything now a days but could be Frisco?

Posted by Debbie in So Cal – March 14, 2008 3:19 PM

Why do I have a funny feeling that you're gonna tell us on Monday (St Patricks Day) that it's in Dublin Ca. That would be going TO the big green..lol. Ok I've named a bunch of cities around the bay area in previous blogs. I'm hoping I've already said the city, but here goes a few more, just in case. Is it lovely Lafayette, is it in riches of Ross, beautiful Benicia, mesmerizing Montclare, precious Petaluma, orluscious Los Altos Hills, or magnificent Martinez? My fingers are crossed for NAPA!!
I'm soooo excited the DH is coming here!
Happy Friday everyone!!!

Posted by Linda Russell – March 14, 2008 3:44 PM

Are you kidding! California! My stomach is turning. California is on the top of the list of one of the states in the WORST housing crisis, right along side with Florida. Fires, earthquakes, mudslides, drought, over population, crazy drivers and gangs. Go figure:(

Posted by Sheri Cline – March 14, 2008 3:48 PM

I think it is in Victorville Ca!!!!!!!! Some one would love to have a beautiful home away from the city that is already paid off and is close to Vegas.

It is a wonderful show to watch and also a wonderful gift for some lucky family to win..
Thanks HGTV and I will keep on entering for the next one.

I think is is San Francisco, CA. The light there are beautiful.

Posted by Louise – March 14, 2008 3:54 PM

Funny, everyone in years past seemed to think that having a HGTV Dream Home in California would be to expensive, until last years Dream Home in the Florida Keys. Now there are a lot more people guessing Hawaii too. I have always thought California and Hawaii are future DH possibilities.

Posted by ILDhomes – March 14, 2008 3:55 PM

I'm not a fan of California, but the Bay area might be ok! The real estate value is incentive enough to enter!

Posted by Tyler – March 14, 2008 4:17 PM

I still think Monterey Bay, Big Sur or Coast CA, a forested suburb in CA.
Or right around Pebble Beach.

Posted by katie r – March 14, 2008 4:19 PM

I've said it before and I'll say it again. DH 2009 will be in VALENCIA, CA. Just google Valencia and "city of lights" and you'll see. Valencia, Spain is referred to as "the city of lights".

Posted by Kim- NC – March 14, 2008 4:21 PM

Oh, come on Darrell, what's up with guessing the Florida Keys?? That was 2008. We already know the 2009 dream house is somewhere in California, and some of us have known that for awhile now.

I really can't comprehend how some bloggers thought the clues were leading us to Kansas, Idaho, Louisiana, New York, or Tennessee? They are beautiful states, but the clues didn't apply. Come on, put your thinking caps on and next week when fcole gives us more clues we can start working on figuring out the mystery location. Yippee! California here we come!!

Posted by Linda – March 14, 2008 4:23 PM

I knew it wasnt me who won...I am so unlucky, I could't win an umbrella in a rain dodging contest! Even with judge sympathy lol.
Congrats to the winner(s), you're lucky and can gain alot of confidence knowing you are!

Posted by Debbie – March 14, 2008 4:37 PM

I'm gonna go ahead and guess Hollywood.....

I think I'm right, thought Hollywood seems sorta un-dreamy to me, so I could be wrong

Posted by Megaroo – March 14, 2008 4:42 PM

I believe it is by San Francisco. Maybe even the town of Vallejo in the neighborhood of Glen Cove. That is my guess

Posted by Christie – March 14, 2008 4:42 PM

it's going to be in the hollywood hills, california

Posted by cyndi – March 14, 2008 4:42 PM

IT MUST BE CA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by RENEE THOMPSON – March 14, 2008 4:50 PM

I hope its Hollywood!

Posted by John – March 14, 2008 4:56 PM

CA get ready to be hit by the next dream home!

Posted by George – March 14, 2008 4:56 PM

CALI...Well why didn't I stick with that on the last clue, as a matter of fact, on the first 2 clues as well! I had to let my friend persuade me otherwise, because he said it was too cut & dry... then I really let my imagination run away with me. Live and Learn! What a beautiful place for the '09 Dream Home, as the monopoly clue quoted, "it's all about the money" and if your specific locale is "going for the green" then maybe it is in Palm Springs, Indian Wells. However, I have a hunch it may be around the "OX"nard area (aka, "the other Hollywood", and Silver Strand, Hollywood by the Sea, Hollywood Beach, Sea"bee" Golf Course, Channel Islands, ports and bays... and probably on that new golf course they will finish this summer with a mountain view of the Ventura-Oxnard metro areas and bay). Also, it is approximately 50 miles to "Hollywood" and close to vineyards as well! I watch for the next clue. Hope I win this one... it would be great for my allergies and I have friends in California and that's not driving distance from NC.

Posted by angela p – March 14, 2008 5:03 PM

Are they going with a Disney theme? Florida has Disney World and now California Disneyland! Whoo hoo! Is right!!

Posted by Adrienne – March 14, 2008 5:08 PM

California is GREAT! Dying to see San Francisco, have a daughter in LA, and have seen enough to want to see and do more. Now WHERE in CA? We need to head back to all the earlier clues and see where they fit.

Posted by robin – March 14, 2008 5:21 PM

I believe it is Monterey Bay,California.

Posted by Susan Taylor – March 14, 2008 5:27 PM

I have a 1930 2-story house with white exterior (first floor) with blue exterior (second floor) and I kid my hubby that we gotta get the yellow shutters for the windows to match that 2008 Dream House! It would be funny if I win this house! *laughing*

California here I come,
Right back where I started from,
Where bowers of flowers bloom in the sun,
Each morning at dawning
Birdies sing an' ev'rything:
A sun-kiss'd miss said, "don't be late,"
That's why I can hardly wait,
Open up that golden gate,
California here I come!

fcole,
I sure hope you get a great salary and benefit package with that title of yours. Thanks for all the leads/clues. You have been alot of fun!
I appreciate it! :)

Posted by njgal – March 14, 2008 5:28 PM

Oh I love it!! Never been to California but Im ready!! I have never won anything and am probably the most unlucky person anywhere but, If I could win this home I would cry. I think my kids would cry too.

Posted by Tia Wilson – March 14, 2008 5:29 PM

Wow, the Dream Home 2009 will be the highest valued prize yet. Since CA property is so high, I'm guessing next year's home will be worth about 5 million!

Posted by Sandy – March 14, 2008 5:33 PM

It will be fantastic to have a Dream Home out here for us Californians to tour (and hopefully win)! Hope it has a great view!! Thank you HGTV for coming to the Coast!

Posted by stagemom – March 14, 2008 5:42 PM

Happy Friday! I can't wait to see if I won! We enter every year for the entire period but what was so different this time is that my entire family was invloved and interested. They even picked their rooms. I'm happy about the new location. I don't know much about California but HGTV has great taste so I'm sure it will be as awesome as the rest. Have a great weekend.

Posted by Gina Rabsatt – March 14, 2008 5:48 PM

This is the best time to buy in CA, it's like the stock market, buy low and sell high. With property values going down the way it is out here, HGTV is right on the money building on the west coast. there was a news report today about SF Bay Area properties still going down. What better place to live than CA. This is going to be the most exciting year yet for the Dream Home....

Posted by Hoof Hearted – March 14, 2008 5:50 PM

CALIFORNIA!!!!!!! Love the San Francisco area,
Carmel, Monterey. Honestly, any where in this state would be heaven.

Posted by Anne – March 14, 2008 5:50 PM

Cali, wow nice choice, now where to build. I am hoping it is right on the ocean, away from the earthquakes, fires, mudslides, etc...

Posted by meme – March 14, 2008 5:53 PM

WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I'm right........or at least I am close, in the correct state anyway........AND thank you ELLA for agreeing with me.......I have been saying South Lake Tahoe, California, close to Emerald Bay State Park for DAYS now on this blog and NO ONE would agree with me. Don't you think the clue "BAY" is a little to obvious for HGTV to give??? Everyone automatically thinks of San Francisco or maybe that is the idea this year, make it so obvious that we look elsewhere :-)

AND there are lots of BAYS in California, not just on the ocean.

According to www.thefreedictionary.com, this is the definition of the word BAY

bay 1 (b)
n.
1. A body of water partially enclosed by land but with a wide mouth, affording access to the sea: the Bay of Biscay.
2. An area of land, such as an arm of prairie partially enclosed by woodland, that resembles in shape or formation a partially enclosed body of water.

The word "journey" in "Journey to the City of Lights" is what we really need to figure out. Are they refering to the band Journey and the song by them or .... A journey to A city of lights!!!

All the others who guessed Lake Tahoe thought is was Lake Tahoe, NV, because they didn't read the clues or the blog or ..... LOL, they thought Lake Tahoe was in the Rocky Mountains, not the Sierra Nevada mountains. LOL For those of you whom have never been there it is the ideal place to go on vacation at ANY time of the year. AND you can use beach towels, like the ones in the clue, there on the BEACH, yes the BEACH at Lake Tahoe.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU HGTV for Clue #8 so we don't have to read all the blogs of the people who don't know what states are east and what states are west of the Mississippi. Nearly a third of the 811 blogs I read this morning were east of the Mississippi or not even in the United States.

Does anyone know if we will get anymore clues so that we can narrow it down anymore??? I'm pumped for researching California geography and cities on the internet tonight!!!

I am elated............California, here we come!!!

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE, to the winner of the 2008 Dream Home and to the correct guesser, aka private detective, for the location of the 2009 Dream Home. You all are SUPER SLEUTHS!!!

Posted by tina from missouri – March 14, 2008 5:55 PM

It's got to be Santa Cruz. The have a wonderful seaside Boardwalk that won a "Golden Ticket" award. The main downtown street is "Pacific Avenue." Scrabble clues have been fun, sun, sand. Another clue was "Bay" - Santa Cruz is on Monterey Bay. The video is consistent with the Big Basin/Santa Cruz mountain range.
Santa Cruz is a really great town, one of my favorite places on earth. What a sweet location for the Dream Home!

Posted by Brenda – March 14, 2008 5:59 PM

Maybe San Juan Capistrano and you're timing the reveal with the return of the swallows next week??

Posted by Tealdreamer – March 14, 2008 6:05 PM

I knew it was California!!!

In the past the winners or their family or coworkers knew at least a week ahead of time! In 2007, the son was contacted a week early. In 2005, the winners were told on March 1st. Unless you are REALLY going live this year to surpise the winner, we are all out of the running. FCOLE could you please at least tell us if they are really surprising the winner on the 16th this year??? We will all still watch to try to win the trip!!! If no reply, we can all assume the winner has already been contacted!!!

Posted by Ella BlyGuest – March 14, 2008 6:05 PM

City of Lights...camera...action...HOLLYWOOD...90027.. here comes HGTV to join the rest of the stars in Hollywood Hills on North Vermont Avenue/Vermont Canyon Road near Boyscout Road in Los Angeles County. Every clue that was ever given fits just right and many take the Journey to Hollywood for the big green.

Posted by Linda Monaco – March 14, 2008 6:16 PM

Darn! I was hoping I was wrong, but congrats to the winner...you are SO LUCKY!!! Enjoy!!!!!

Posted by Ella BlyGuest – March 14, 2008 6:16 PM

what stumped me was all the banana leafs, shells, made me think of Hawaii.

Posted by Tricia Ballard – March 14, 2008 6:37 PM

Well since it isn't going to be in UTAH :-(
Maybe it will be somewhere near

Bodega Bay is located on the Pacific Coast just 68 miles North of San Francisco. The most prominent geological feature of Bodega Bay is Bodega Head, a peninsula that forms the the protective arm between the ocean and the bay. The San Andreas fault runs right through it, separating steep rocky bluffs from sandy dunes. Atop the bluffs,
grasslands rise more gently to the coastal
ridges. The Head provides a dramatic vista and the ideal place to watch whales migrate south twice yearly in January/February and April/May. Bodega Bay is ideal for fishing, golfing, horse back riding, kayaking, surfing, diving and much more

Maybe the Big River and Salmon Creek Area

HGTV Dream Home with be built somwhere around the City of Santa Cruz, California!! It is situated on the northern part of Monterey Bay about 74 miles south of San Francisco and 30 miles from San Jose. Pacific Avenue exists as the cultural and social center for all visitors of Santa Cruz, and showcases an upscale residential district, historic Victorians, galleries, a modern museum and a vibrant nightlife all enhanced by the areas natural beauty and style. Santa Cruz is the quintessential beach town. It was here that Hawaiian royalty first introduced surfing to the mainland--and locals and visitors alike have been riding the waves ever since. The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is the West Coast's last remaining seaside amusement park...Fun!! Anyone recognize some of the clues here....like: Cove, Fun, Breeze, Sun, Sand, BAY....yes!!!! The video certainly looks consistent with the Big Basin/Santa Cruz mountain range. Just a bit of heaven in this area of California!!
I'm excited!!

Would be nice to see a picture perfect spot along the St. Lawrence River, between Alexander Bay and Massena. Would also be condusive to building a self-sustaining self energy home with wind/solar options. Always a wind blowing along the river.

Thank you Brenda - I was beginning to think everyone had forgotten about the Boardwalk and the Golden Ticket clue. For those of you who missed Evan J's post, here is the crucial link again (as well as Santa Cruz fitting in with all the other clues:
http://www.beachboardwalk.com/
By the way, Tina from Missouri, your pick sounds gorgeous, but I have to stick with the gorgeous Santa Cruz area. We'll know soon enough - don't they announce the location Sunday night? I'll be watching!

JACK! Remember no home on the hills, the rains will make it slide off.

Posted by Mary – March 14, 2008 8:08 PM

Huh, I'm still in the dark as to how the globe fit in. There is a Globe, CA; but nothing to it as far as I can tell. And there is the Golden Globes Award, hosted in Beverly Hills.

Great to see you at the same time as me fcole! I have a few questions that you could help with -
1. Are you a man or a woman?
2. Have you gotten to visit any of the DHs?
3. Which one was your favorite?
4. How close am I with my guess of Santa Cruz?
5. Why are my posts always held up? Anything I can do to get them to post right away?

Hoping to hear back from you soon!

Posted by Carol R – March 14, 2008 8:14 PM

Okay, fcole....
is it safe to assume we are in a county with an ocean view? North of Orange county?
Or more to the point...close to Pebble Beach?

Posted by Pret – March 14, 2008 8:28 PM

Hope it is fire proof, earthquake proof & mudslide proof- that is what I would call a dream home in California! At least you have great wine!

Posted by Mike – March 14, 2008 8:31 PM

This is my first time doing this and was unaware that we could ask Fcole questions. With that said, I am finding it even more fun. My first thoughts were California after I ruled out states HGTV had already been to. I thought perhaps somewhere in southern CA. The only places I have been are to Palm Springs (29 Palms Marine Base) and San Diego, and Los Angeles overnite. I don't know much else about California, but alot of the clues appeared to be near a coastline. Too fun. So, with now knowing which state, and the fact that we can indeed ask questions, I guess I will have to think of some questions for Fcole. Thanks again and good luck to all.

Posted by deb – March 14, 2008 8:32 PM

fcole is the next HGTV dream home going to be in Northern or Southern CA? Please help narrow down the choices!!! Thanks!!! (I will, stay tuned. fc)

Posted by Ella Bly-Guest – March 14, 2008 8:35 PM

Are there any other options for those of us that cannot afford to make the payments on a $350,000 mortgage (that's the cost of the Federal taxes that must be paid when the 'free' house is transferred), other than selling it immediately?

Posted by Bob R – March 14, 2008 8:40 PM

Fcole...Is it near the ocean?
Or is it in the hills?
Could it be N. california or Central or southeren?
How many of the clues really do pertain to the actual location??
Thanks.

Posted by ocean blue – March 14, 2008 8:42 PM

I am going to guess El Centro, CA. Its by the Chocalate Mountains.

Posted by Carolyn L – March 14, 2008 8:54 PM

Wow! Another home on the coast!!! Why am I not surprised. Jack, ya need to try visiting flyover country once in a while when you're looking for a DH site. You'd be absolutely amazed at all the beautiful country between the East Coast & the West. We even have indoor plumbing.;) LOL

Posted by Catherine – March 14, 2008 8:56 PM

Another clincher for Santa Cruz is this - the Boardwalk has the "Casino Arcade".
Fcole - has the winner already been notified?

Posted by Brenda – March 14, 2008 9:01 PM

Hey, they must have notified the winner in the rules it reads 5 days to reply or reach the person or someone else will be picked ,if they leave messages thats the only way.SO that isn`t much of a surprize! Is it! Whatz Up fcole? You can`t be surprized when you find out early. Then try and fake it for the recording of the show. Its going to be killing me till I watch the show.Or it could be recorded from the day they notified them???(Thinking to much )Good Nite! SEE YA IN CA.

Great! - I thought w/ the 'bay' hint it had to be CA. Kudos to the HGTV team for thinking up 'the clues' - they are keeping us on our toes. Lots of neat bay areas in CA. If I can't have the Keys, then it is on to California dreamin'. Thanks fc for taking away the some of the questions re: west of the MS.

FCOLE...Can you tell us is it close to a range of mountains? ie. Sierra Nevada

Posted by Shirlene – March 14, 2008 10:40 PM

FCOLE:

Can you tell us if the DH 2009 will be built near the coast or inland?

Posted by Earalav – March 14, 2008 10:42 PM

QUESTIONS FOR FCOLE: Are we looking for ocean/bay/seaview? lake view? mountain view? valley view? city view as well? Does "money/go for the green" refer either to careers; that is, Silicon Valley, CA's money center, or to casinos and the color of a water setting? Is it North, South or East of San Francisco? Are the Santa Cruz mountains a strong possiblity? Does the scrabble board clue "knot mountain zone" mean not in the Sierras, therefore not Lake Tahoe? I have lots more questions, but don't want to jump until I'm sure the parachute will open.

Posted by DBCoop – March 14, 2008 10:49 PM

its San Francisco for sureeee :)

Posted by chelsea – March 14, 2008 11:11 PM

Hi everyone! Nice to see Fcole here too! anyways, I was starting to second guess my guess of san francisco, and was beginning to think Washington. But who knows where exactly it could be in California. I looked it up, there's at least 15 bays in California. Who knows where it is. I hope it's on the northern coast, I think it's cheaper to build and live up here, where I live. I don't live on the coast, but near Mt. Shasta. Good luck to all, and will hopefully get to watch it on sunday! Have a great day everyone! Can't wait for the next clue!

Posted by Kelli – March 14, 2008 11:11 PM

OK so it's not Idaho or La. So how about Three Arch Bay, Ca.
It has a Shell Cove,
Big hollywood connection,
Is in a Beach Boy song,
home of Aloha films,
Is close to Knotts Berry Farm which along with Santa Cruz won a 2007 golden ticket award,
and according to google at least 10 casinos close by, and 10+ businesses with either Fat or Sunflower in their names, even one called La Zebra.
Am I even close?

Posted by Vicki L. – March 14, 2008 11:14 PM

I was born in San Diego and also lived there while my husband was in the Navy. I have lived in Calif. most of my life and done lots of traveling throughout the state. My best guess is the San Diego area..La Jolla,Del Mar or surrounding areas. If you will take the time to do reseach on San Diego you will find each and EVERY ONE of the clues have a connection to the area. If you are looking for pines..how about Torry Pines State Reserve? It's very possible that the pictures up in the hills looking down onto the trees was taken from there. Also Old Town Plaza is also, (Washington Square). There is a neighborhood in La Jolla named Wind 'N Sea. Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Birch Aquarium is there...try looking for what fishes they have and you will find the one in the picture in the Dream Home 2008 on their list. There is a flower called the San Diego Sunflower, there is a fishing knot, called the San Diego Knot. Way back when the area was inhabited by Silver Dons...the wealthy Mexican land owners decorated their saddles to be covered in Silver so they were then called the Silver Dons. Also there is Silver Strand and a silver Padres jacket. The Big Green is or was the name of a San Diego self-guided Green Building tour. The clue about money...could it be that "Money Magazine", chose San Diego as a finalist in 2006 as one of the Best Places to live? The Big Green could also be Torry Pines Gold course. The zip code is 92093..and the prefixes for phone numbers in the La Jolla/San Diego area just may be what you are looking for also! As for arches...there is an Arch st. in San Diego. Also gas lamp arch at 5th & L st...there are many arches in the area because of the Mexican architecture, as in the many arches at the Balboa Botanical building or the Arch at the train station in down town San Diego, and there were many arches in the rocks out in the water but erosion has destroyed many of them..there are palm trees, sand, breezes, wind, many boardwalks and if you will go in and research every clue that you think does not fit...put in a search for San Diego history or attractions! It's all there for the finding! Las Vegas is my guess for the City of Lights...and the journey is approx. 330 miles from San Diego. Casinos are so plentiful in the San Diego area that you can't throw a rock without hitting one! The Native Americans know where the money is! San Diego has had it's share of (grief) lately with the fires and Santa Anna winds that blow in from the desert bringing with it a huge fire danger. As for the area...I would highly recommend it...I have always said that if I were to ever move back to Southern Calif. it would have to be the San Diego area. And, by the way, to those who are not from Calif...we NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, refer to San Francisco as Frisco! We call it "The City", or The Bay Area, or San Francisco. California has many fine places that the Dream Home 2009 could be located...it's a lovely state! But San Diego area is my best guess! If you don't speak Spanish..La Jolla is pronounced. La Hoee-ya...just thought you might like to know! Please go on a search of the area because I think you will find it very interesting reading..historically especially you will find all of the things you never thought the area would have. Good hunting!

okay fcole..............................................................................................................................................
I see you still haven't received many questions and you must be pretty bored by now, sooooooooooooooooo how about answering some questions:

1) If I run out of effervese vinifera during hordourves at my first dinner party in my dream home, can I go purchase more in the coomb and be back by dessert?

2) While lounging on the deck in my dream home, which aircraft are going to disturb my peace and quiet?
a-search and rescue planes looking for lost hikers?
b-planes bombing targets ... above all?
or
c-a few good men practicing urban combat?

3) If the hollow around my home needs the right aridity but so do I, since the mature ovaries supposedly disappeared during the greatest malaise of all time, the rewards of my labor will have to come from a place of abundance where the wax makes them all gleam, right?

4) If it's a hot day and I need to cool off, should I

a-take a short drive to the lake of purity?
b-sneak into the water where the symbol of peace lives, but watch out for the water horse?
c-go to one of my neighbor's houses where infinity is sooooooooo in style?
d-swim where the water is cool but the history is dreary?
or
e-swim in a body of hope?

5) My nieces and nephews are coming to visit me in my glorious new home and I don't want them to get bored. Should I

a-send them out to build a sand castle?
b-hike with them to see large living organisms?
c-give them 1 of my four inner linings and some liquescent xocoatl with lots of little barrels traditionally made from roots?
d-go visiting those who will never forget them?
e-go see the likeness of Lance Armstrong?
or
f-teach them to make jam?

The Monopoly game has the most visable house on "Boardwalk" , California being the 31st state and using "Boardwalk".... that leaves nothing but the next HGTV Dreamhome to be located in Santa Cruz, California

Posted by mpp – March 15, 2008 12:15 AM

So, I did some more sleuthing. Journey, the band is from San Francisco! haha! And there is a mission bay, which is a neighborhood in San Francisco, and it borders the South Pacific Railroad company. Isn't that the railroad on the monopoly board, near the area they were showing us? Or there's a Bayview town or Shelter Cove area's up north of San Francisco. Who knows. I'm hoping for the northern coast:D

Posted by Kelli – March 15, 2008 12:31 AM

I sure hope it's not Frisco, blah! Somewhere up near Dillon Beach or Bodega Bay would be much better. Right up the road from the happy cows in Two Rock. Yep, now that's what I'm talkin about. Course, South Lake Tahoe wouldn't be too shabby either! Or near the vineyards of Healdsburg and Guerneyville close to the Redwoods. That would be the perfectly serene setting to put a dream home.

Posted by Felicity in NorCal – March 15, 2008 12:55 AM

Hey did you know ...on Lake Tahoe there is the Tahoe Keys? One of the streets there is called Aloha Drive. It is in a cove and it snows in the Winter. Knowing the last home is in warmer climate. (The last home is on the Florida Keys)..hmmm... do you think that may count for something? Near lots of "green"...golf courses. Just a thought...It goes with lots of other clues. ...I may be off about half a state though. LOL Is there a boardwalk...or is the clue on the Monopoly board really Park Place...like on one the streets in South Lake Tahoe.. It could be.. And won't they tell us on Sunday where it is like they did last year? fcole am I close???

Posted by Ella – March 15, 2008 12:57 AM

food for thought...................

hey SUPER SLEUTHS, clue #8 included a link to Chris Barrett.........wherein she talks about style in "southern california".....do you think that is a hint also???

Anybody from southern California that can tell us what it is like? I've been to Los Angeles as a child and San Diego a few years ago, but never made it out into the surrounding areas. I have also been to Lake Tahoe/Reno area and to Sacramento and San Francisco, so the center of California eludes me with the exception of Sacramento. California is so huge with several different climate areas, even within 20 miles of each other.

I've been thinking South Lake Tahoe, California all along, but MAYBE, just maybe, since HGTV has done ocean, mountain, lake, ocean, mountain, lake..., maybe, just maybe they are building the next home in the desert of Apple Valley, CA. Anyone know what kind of trees are there besides apple? A home in the desert would be awesome. I checked the elevation....I kindaaaaa think it is high enough to match the video of jack. I can't find my paper with all the scrabble words, how many can we match to that area? I can't think of one thing to match the bay clue. I'm not worried about boardwalk though.........that clue said follow the money and the big green, I think boardwalk was not relevant.

Any thoughts???

Posted by tina from missouri – March 15, 2008 1:12 AM

From the clues I've read and heard: Mountain, Fun, Sun, Bay, Cove, Casino, Boardwalk, Dance,
Music, Sierra, Dice, Golden, Zone, Lake, Money, Sand, Silver, Road, etc... It has to be LAKE TAHOE... I lived near there for a couple of years, when I was a child, and it was the most beautiful place in California and Nevada. So, I think the 2009 HGTV is somewhere on Lake Tahoe, the California side...........Or could be Donner Lake near Lake Tahoe, another beautiful Sierra Mountain area........

WELL, FCOLE, I REALLY THOUGHT I HAD THE ANSWER WITH GLOBE, AZ. WHEN YOU SAID YOU HAD NEVER EVEN HEARD OF THE PLACE, I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED AND KNEW I HAD TO START FROM SCRATCH--A LITTLE MORE DIFFICULT WHEN YOU'RE FROM RHODE ISLAND AND THE DH 2009 IS ON THE WEST COAST. I THINK A LOT OF US MISUNDERSTOOD CLUE #2, THINKING THE CLUE WAS "GLOBE." IT WAS REALLY "WORLD." AM I RIGHT? And...what is the significance of the three dice. It seems to mean 354, but I can't for the life of me figure out what that means. All I can find is that they do have 354-XXXX as a telephone exchange.

Going with the word "world", I have to join with other bloggers and say San Francisco, site of the 1915 WORLDS FAIR. At the time, it was called "CITY LUMINOUS" for the special lighting done by Thomas Edison; people made a JOURNEY TO THE CITY OF LIGHTS. Of course, they have San Francisco BAY. They have CASINOS. After the Great Earthquake, there was CRYing and GRIEF. There are SILVER MINES there, a fact I did not know until now. ZEBRA may be because of the ZEBRA killings there in the 70s-a darker meaning. Of course, there are missions there, which could explain the word PRAYER. Oh, it's definitely more difficult when you live on the other side of the country.

Posted by Julie – March 15, 2008 4:29 AM

It is Santa Cruz, CA

Living in San Francisco Bay Area all my life and knowing that southern California is not referred to the bay. It is here in breath taking San Francisco Bay Area. But also knowing how building in the San Francisco is not realistic and would bet money that it will be in Half Moon Bay. If you watch Color Splash they always film in Half Moon Bay from the Ritz Carlton. It is still affordable and a lot of places to build and not far from the city of San Francisco and the Silicon Valley. Additionally they are planning on widening the road to Half Moon Bay and will draw a lot more people... Half Moon Bay HGTV is coming.....Also known for the pumpkin festival....

Ritz Carlton - does this backdrop look familiar

What area in California could top Lake Tahoe??? It has everything and was my original guess. Off hand I can't think of any other area in CA that would be as perfect and suitable for one of HGTV's gorgeous dream homes than Lake Tahoe but am worried that even HGTV may find the price tag way too high.

Posted by Marion – March 15, 2008 5:07 AM

California!!!! San Diego

Posted by Rose – March 15, 2008 6:39 AM

FCOLE, does "BAY" refer to the Bay area of California or any bay in California? If it is referring to the Bay area, then anyone who is from California knows that can only mean the San Francisco bay area. Also, FCOLE, are they going to announce the exact 2009 location on the giveaway show tonight?

Posted by Sandy – March 15, 2008 7:51 AM

FCOLE,
Has the HGTV crew narrowed it down to say, 3 choices?
Did they select areas such as southern, central or northern, and going from there?

I must say, it's like Christmas as a kid, once you open the presents it's a bit of a letdown. I so enjoyed the game of guessing, and have never been farther west than Missouri.

Santa Monica, CA. It has about every AVE. Street you could find including Mississipi. It has a Boardwalk and a bay. I think the golden ticket is from Willy Wonka or the American Idol both of which should be flimed in Hollywood which is right next to Santa Monica. The rest of the clues are probably streets, areas or things made there. I'm still saying SANTA MONICA, CA

NAPA VALLEY !!!

Well, my home state. Born in San Francisco and live way up north now. Yes, we have a few "Arches" in California and even around the Bay Area. One in downtown SF from the old EXPO in the 1930's. Hum, one that comes to mind is a big, very tall bridge that spans a revine just south of San Francisco, on I-280 and the hills look like the video. If you build up on the hillside there you have a view of the bay and the lights. Well maybe Hillsboro area, San Mateo County?
I will be looking for then next clue....wonderful!

Posted by LindaS – March 15, 2008 9:55 AM

FCOLE, I meant to ask if the exact location will be announced Sunday night (not tonight) during the live giveaway?

Posted by Sandy – March 15, 2008 10:13 AM

I am a native CA and I have to say this is the first time I have done this type of deal. I think that no matter where in CA along the coast you cannot go wrong. We may have earthquakes, mudslides etc. but what State does not have some type of natural disaster happen? Anyway on a brighter note being along the coast and watching the sunsets we have are some of the most beautiful sites you could ask for. Woooo! Hoooo! CA

I've got it!
San Francisco, California!

Posted by Rosemary – March 15, 2008 10:14 AM

I'm thinking it's near Santa Cruz, as all the clues seem to fit. Sounds like a wonderful place to me!!!! Can't wait to find out.

Posted by robin – March 15, 2008 10:15 AM

Well the show was filmed with couple looking for a home in Big Bear Lake in California so I would guess California, Big Bear Lake?

Posted by Deb – March 15, 2008 10:17 AM

OKAY, WHO OUT THERE HAS READ MANY OF THE BLOGS AND AFTER EACH ONE, SAID YEAH THAT'S CONVINCING, IT'S UTAH...WASHINGTON...ARIZONA...HAWAII...NO WAIT, CALIFORNIA!! MANY OF YOU DID SOME NICE RESEARCH, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE CALIFORNIA IT IS.

I AM STILL LOOKING OVER MY SHOULDER TO SEE IF THERE ARE CAMERA MEN IN A DARK VAN THAT WILL POP OUT AND TELL ME I'VE WON THE HOME IN THE FLORIDA KEYS.

HAPPY ST PATTYS DAY FCOLE. TOAST SOME GREEN BEER FOR ME!!

Posted by Ramona – March 15, 2008 10:37 AM

Jack is standing in a wooded area with a view of a valley and possibly the ocean. FCOLE, is the DH north of Santa Rosa?

Posted by susan – March 15, 2008 10:42 AM

It's California!!!:) I hope that the house is near a lot of fun things to do!!:)

Posted by Siennah – March 15, 2008 10:45 AM

I look up City of Lights in California, is it Chino, California?

Posted by Bee LeDoux – March 15, 2008 10:55 AM

Hope it is La Jolla, but I really think it will be Carmel

Posted by PFH – March 15, 2008 11:07 AM

California!!!

Posted by Aracelis – March 15, 2008 11:14 AM

My guess is now confirmed, California! I am leaning towards the Pebble Beach area, as well; I will go out on the proverbial limb to pinpoint it to Spanish Bay. This falls in line with those thinking Santa Cruz area. Why Pebble Beach area – go for the big green – golf anyone. The Masters = big money and the green jacket. Just my random thoughts, Good Luck to the winner of the DH 2008!

The Dream Home 2009 is going to be built in San Francisco, CA.

Posted by Mary Owens – March 15, 2008 11:27 AM

I enjoy reading comments of the viewers, however, I am amazed at how many don't realize there will be taxes on this beautiful home...and it won't be cheap. My home burned to the ground and I am house hunting - and have the money to pay taxes! :-) Best wishes to whomever wins this one!

Posted by Jan – March 15, 2008 11:29 AM

This is in California! Awesome! I'm guessing somewhere in San Fran, perhaps overlooking the Bay. I can't wait to see what it will look like and hope to visit it...

Posted by Karla – March 15, 2008 11:30 AM

I am sorry Sandra but if you intend to try to stay in the Dream Home, you will be sadly disappointed. You say you don't know when you will eat and all of that, there isn't enough money to pay the taxes that long even with the money you win, besides the home. Plus if you are that destitute ? then I am sure that you will be using the money to get a home and raise your daughter right.

Posted by Catherine Moore – March 15, 2008 11:42 AM

Good luck to all of you that entered, I hope that someone gets alot of money for this house when they sell it. HGTV please build a home that the everyday JOE can afford to live in, that would be a true dream home to most!

Posted by Catherine – March 15, 2008 11:45 AM

Wherever this next beautiful home is located, I sure hope you take into consideration that people would have to quit their jobs to relocate. Meaning how on earth would they be able to afford the taxes and utilities of such an expensive house? Does it need to be a multi million dollar home? If I won it I'd sure like to be able to keep it. Most winners have to sell to some corporate lawyer or the rich because they cannot afford to live in it themselves. I think that's sad. HGTV is doing a wonderful thing giving away homes, but it would be nice to include everyone realistically.

Hooray for California!

Posted by calitex – March 15, 2008 12:07 PM

I think maybe San Francisco? It has a bay and hilly. Not mountains but, very hilly.

Posted by J Teague – March 15, 2008 12:08 PM

Sunny California!
I'm thinking Malibu...

Posted by John G – March 15, 2008 12:19 PM

FCOLE....My guess is MONTEREY BAY am I correct? Just tell me or give me a hint that I am even close. From all the great clues, this is where I believe the 2009 DH will be built. You have sure keep my brain busy and I have sure enjoyed every minute. Thanks again FCOLE..I will be looking for the next clue.

Posted by Charlene – March 15, 2008 12:25 PM

California yeaaaahhhhh!!!

Posted by The Swede – March 15, 2008 12:29 PM

Now i know is Santa Monica Bay, for sure.

Posted by Fred Ruiz – March 15, 2008 12:38 PM

I think the clues are pointing to somewhere in Sonoma County, California: sea arches, wool blanket trading, Fort Ross founded by San Ingancio Mini, music festivals, beginning roots of California's apple industry, diving off of the coast, River Rock Casino, Sonoma gas BBQ grills, Sonoma Creek Falls, Sonoma County Zebra Breeders. What a beautiful place to live!!!

Posted by Lydia P – March 15, 2008 1:02 PM

CALIFORNIA!!
I was born there 65 years ago! I would love to return to live there in a new HG home!

Posted by Donna – March 15, 2008 1:29 PM

FCOLE- HERE'S A GOOD QUESTION-DID A WOMAN NAMED SYLVIA TOMPKINS WIN THE 2008 DREAM HOME OR DID SHE MAKE IT SOUND LIKE THAT IN:WHAT WOULD WE ASK THE WINNER?BLOG????

Posted by am i fooled – March 15, 2008 1:35 PM

Other possibilities in the Ventura-OXnard-Thousand Oaks area are the Ojai Valley (www.ojairesort.com, absolutely gorgeous!), Spanish Hills in Camarillo area, Conejo Valley or Westlake in the Thousand Oaks area. All are smaller, quiet and beautiful areas within minutes to the coastline and a short drive to Hollywood or Santa Barbara to the north. Surrounded by gorgeous views from the hills and lucious farmlands, all overlooking the surrounding metro areas. Also, these areas are ranked some of the best areas to live and the lowest crime rates. Ready for more clues...

Posted by angela p – March 15, 2008 1:36 PM

wow, that's a let down, probably the most expensive state to live in. Wild fires, mudslides, crime rates, not to mention, cost of living and dare I say EARTHQUAKES!!! I shudder to think what the insurance alone on a DH would cost a yr, let alone taxes. Good thing that nobody but a millionaire will be able to keep this home. But that seems to be par for the course. I wonder if HGTV already has people lined up to buy these DH's when the winners can't come up with the money to take possession, if so, do they get a kickback? just wondering? As disappointing as this is, it's still fun to guess. Truly hoping for a better place(by better I mean more affordable and less disaster ridden)next year. Good luck to all.

I AM GLAD YOU PICKED CALIFORNIA, IF THE 2009 DREAM HOME IS ANY WHERE NEAR LAKE TAHOE THERE IS A LOT GOING FOR IT. NEAR AUBURN THERE IS A PLACE THEY GROW APPLES. I THINK ITS CALLED APPLEGATE. EMERALD BAY IS SPECTACULAR ! A LOT OF BEAUTIFUL PLACES IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. THANK YOU HGTV FOR GREAT PROGRAMING. THIS HAS BEEN VERY INTERESTING.

Posted by viv kelley – March 15, 2008 1:42 PM

It's SF or somewhere near SF. The biggest clue to me is "Journey to the city of lights". The band Journey sang about SF in their song "Lights".
