At first, this might seem like just an innocent home improvement project from HGTV's Carter Oosterhouse. But it does have a connection to the location of HGTV Dream Home 2009. And if you're paying close attention, you might pick up something else on that page that's related to where we're going. Maybe there's a grouping where one of the members isn't quite like the others?
I hope to be able to release the exact location soon. Keep checking back for another clue each week until we have the big announcement. And if you haven't entered today, click on over and enter the HGTV Green Home sweepstakes for a chance to win an environmentally friendly home in South Carolina. You can enter once a day until May 9.

Thanks Fcole for the clue! It's a good one. Time to do some more look'n. I need to read again to get the second clue. Have'n fun, hope you are too.

Ok, Redwood trees in California
Posted by bkp – March 28, 2008 2:41 PM
Ok..It appears you're going for the redwood relationship, but I have to tell you, there are Redwoods in many areas of NCAL, around the bay and further north, too.
I don't think you're going for the trees though...are you naming the city...REDWOOD CITY in San Mateo County aka Deadwood City. There's the arch across Broadway St and the 49ers used to practice there.
I don't see the other clue you're referring to, so I'll wait for the other bloggers to light the way.
Thanks for the clue fcole, but I hope you're not going to string us along too much longer. Happy FRIDAY everyone!!!

You need the "screen" the Related Articles. Hey is that redwood they are using on the door?? :)
Posted by netalia – March 28, 2008 3:16 PM
Oh wait...thought of something else. I know I said Redwood City, but close to there is Woodside, where Steve Jobs lives. The Apple connection? And then there's Emerald Lake Hills...going for the green. Ok...I'm feeling pretty strong about my 3 NEW choices. Now I'm feeling a little crazy!!!
Good luck everyone!!!

I'm still thinking San Francisco Bay area, maybe Redwood City area
Posted by Vicki – March 28, 2008 3:30 PM
The first clue was the use of redwood to make the screen door. The second clue was a link on the right side of the page to an article on "The Magnificent Redwood". It could be anywhere in the SF Bay Area. (There is a third clue in the "Magnificent Redwood" article. You just have to be a little resourceful...fc)
Posted by stagemom – March 28, 2008 3:34 PM
GUERNEVILLE, about 20 miles from ocean (bodega bay area)
Posted by annie – March 28, 2008 3:44 PM
Hmmm... "Maybe there's a grouping where one of the members isn't quite like the others?" There is a beam, or a member, in the first picture that possesses a color that is darker than all of the other beams. Maybe it's another type of wood, suggesting that there is another type of tree at or in proximity to the 2009 HGTV Dream Home homesite.

In my opinion, it can't be on any other article besides the one that fcole hads provided a link to. "And if you're paying close attention, you might pick up something else on that page that's related to where we're going." I am referring to the words "on that page". However, I could be completely incorrect.
Posted by Tennis368fan – March 28, 2008 3:56 PM
I could be completely off again, but it could also have something to do with "Carter", Carter Oosterhouse's first name, in that it is a street name nearby to the 2009 HGTV Dream Home. Santa Cruz County, California and Mammouth Lakes, CA are my guesses, but I think that Santa Cruz County is more likely based on previous clues.
Posted by Tennis368fan – March 28, 2008 3:59 PM
Dear fcole,
When you said "resourceful" did you mean to look at the "resources" at the bottom of "The Magnificent Redwood" article for the third clue? Because that would mean placing the home in the Guerneville area which means either Russian River!!!!! or Sonoma wine country!!!!! I am totally stoked if that's what you meant!!! Thanks for commenting on my note :-)
Posted by stagemom – March 28, 2008 4:00 PM
Okay, how about Pacific Grove...where the monarchs go?
Posted by ReneeD – March 28, 2008 4:05 PM
I agree with the Redwood City guesses. In Jack's video, the background looks very much like a picture from the Redwood City hills. Many of the clues fit, too.
Posted by D – March 28, 2008 4:06 PM
Annie got it first, I'm sure. GUERNEVILLE on the beautiful Russian River under the redwood trees. Already got my kayak packed! Way to go Annie.

I think with this last clue, the Dream Home will be located either in Lake Arrowhead (Bernardino county) or one of the surrounding cites (there is a Smiley City) maybe that is where the yellow clue comes in. If you look at (figure D )in the last clue you will notice an arrow inside the square made with the redwood. The clue PORTOLA,(PORT-O-LA.) I believe this means Port of Los Angeles, Fcole said it was not far from there. Lake arrowhead is about 90 minutes from Los Angeles.

I think that the "member" to the right of the screen door in this picture could also pertain to a specific type of redwood, rather than another type of wood and tree. Coast redwoods are known for their dull red color and their use in construction in the United States today. Coast Redwoods also exist in the area around Santa Cruz, where the Boardwalk is located, and the Peninsula, where Redwood City and Woodland are located. This could also what the title of this clue is referring to - "Check Behind the Door for Another Clue". The "member", or the vertical support right of the door, would be behind the door when the door is swung open. However, I may be wrong and the title could be referring to something else.

Well, I read the new clue...and I haven't got a clue!!! I am not "real" familiar with California at all. Been to Palm Springs overnight to visit my son while he was in the USMC in 29 Palms, CA. Venice Beach overnight, and San Diego for a weekend. THAT folks is my California experience. I would have to guess along with others that yes, redwood has something to do with it. But again, I don't know where the redwoods are, sssssoooooo guess I will have to research and get back in here. San Fransisco has always been on my "bucket" list. From some of the other guesses, redwoods are near there. NICE.

Dear HGTV:
Oh, my heavens, how did I miss such a GREAT clue before. I really, really took a close look at the photo....Does anyone see the shadow of all the "grapevines" growing on an arbor outside? What better clue is this to substantiate my guess...that the 2009 Dream Home will be built right in the middle of the "wine country"....Sonoma, California!!! I know that Redwood was a great clue, but the grapevines tell it all!!!!
I'm going crazy...I can hardly wait for the next clue!!!!
Thank you HGTV for all this excitement!!

I've looked at all the clue's and when you get to where she says "There is a grouping and one is not quite the same" And yet it's still in the same page as the other two. If you look at the
Resources at the bottom of the page it shows you 3 different address with 2 of them saying Armstrong Woods State Reserve" and then there's another there saying "Duncan Mills" and that's the one which is the same yet different. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Also I'd like to say Duncan Mills is a awesome place and would love to live there ,it's right on the Russian River and in the Redwood trees. By the way last year they asked for a place to put the next house and I replied with " The Wine Country" and that's where they are putting it. Good Luck to All and double check my anwser ,you'll see I'm on the Money.

Well, I enlarged the photo to see "behind the door" and there are shadows. One looks like the Junipero SErra statue that is on Highway 280 between San Jose and San Francisco, and it is around the Woodside and Portola Valley area.

FCOLE: I still want to know if you are a man or a woman, and what your favorite DH so far has been. Thanks. (Hey Carol, I'm a boy and I think the Dream Home in Lake Lure, NC, would have to be my fave. fc)
Posted by Carol R – March 28, 2008 8:33 PM
So, clues are directing us to a certain neck of the (red)woods. Armstrong Woods seems to be a clear link, putting the DH09 site within a cone's throw of Guerneville...perhaps even a little further afield. There are so many quaint communities along the Russian River, from Duncans Mills near the coast, to Villa Grande, Monte Rio, the big G-ville itself, Rio Nido, and moving on inland to Forestville, Occidental, Freestone, Sebastopol, Kenwood, and maybe even to the spa resorts in and around Boyes Hot Springs. FCOLE: do we need to head NORTH, EAST, SOUTH, or WEST to find the DH09 location from Guerneville. PERHAPS WE'RE ALREADY THERE?
Posted by DBCoop – March 28, 2008 9:16 PM
Guerneville is a nice area, and it is a lot less expensive to live there. Jobs in the area are scarce.
Posted by Joline – March 28, 2008 9:27 PM
I'm with Annie. (for the moment, anyway) I thinking it's IN the REDWOODS, (not in Redwood City) and following that third clue to 'resources' at the bottom of the MAGNIFICENT REDWOODS article takes us to (or near) GUERNEVILLE.
We'd definitely be GOING FOR THE GREEN, and GETTING INTO HOT WATER (at nearby Calistoga Springs) if we wanted.
Still, the PORTOLA VALLEY clue rang true as well....and Redwood City is closer to there.
Need to check the clues again.

Forgot to look at the Clue title - 'Check behind the door'. Had been focused on 'one of the members not quite like the others'. Is that a pine post/beam out on the patio? (Pine? - or what other wood? Some of the biggest pine cones I've ever seen came from northern California.) Or, what else is behind the door that's not quite like the other members? Is there a broken limb outside? (Broken?) It could be anything! Wow!

My guess: somewhere between highway 280 (just West of Portola Valley), and the coast, near Half-moon Bay. Lots of Redwoods, lots of open space, mountains, coast, the area has it all. That video of Jack on the mountain could easily be there.
Posted by Michele – March 29, 2008 12:34 AM
Portola Valley was clue #9. Redwood City is only 9 miles from Portola Valley and all the clues in clue #10 reference redwoods. Is it Redwood City? That's a really beautiful area and close to everything. You can go to San Francisco, wine country, Monterey, Pacifica.... And, in April and September Petaluma has an awesome antiques fair. I'm sure Linda Woodrum won't miss it when looking for decor. I'll bet she also gets something from the NapaStyle stores popping up all over, as the FoodNetwork is a sister station.... hmmmmm, just hand me the keys now because this is my perfect house in the perfect location.

Posted by Deborah Papy – March 29, 2008 5:30 AM
Redwood is certainly the clue. Redwood City is near Portola Valley. Also in Redwood City is Redwood Shores which is as close to the bay as you can get. It is also near Pete's Harbor and once upon a time there was a "zoo" on Redwood Shores called Sea World. Clue 10 said to look for a grouping that is not quite like the other. If you note the crossbar on the screen on the right is higher than on the two screens on the left. What does a crossbar do...it shores up the screen to give it strength. Of course the higher bar may mean higher in the mountains in which case it could mean near Portola State Park which is in the redwoods above La Honda. Oh dear...still two choices.
Posted by Valerie – March 29, 2008 7:12 AM
Behind Carter and the other man working on the door is what appears to be a grapevine. I'm guessing Sonoma, CA.

I am sure, and I know in my heart, where ever it is, it will be beautiful. As I said, I am not as familiar with California as some of the other bloggers. It would appear that some live there, so they would be able to better guess where it could be. They are alot of help, thank you to all the guesses. I know its all fun, and we all need to dream. But seriously, oh yeah, I would/could without question, move to California.

Thanks stagemom, but that might have been too easy. I definately think it's in that area though, in Sebastopol the apple is their city tree, and the whole town has been "going green" for some time now. In Bodega Bay there are countless sheep roaming the green hillsides. That area (sonoma County) sounds amazing and I can't wait to move in.

Hi there...I hope everyone is enjoying some sunshine on this Saturday morning.
I'm wondering if the 'Check Behind the Door for Another Clue' is as cryptic as I originally thought it may be. The first thing I noticed when I looked at the picture of the door was the top of the screen. It reminds me of the monopoly board in the fact that it looks air brushed, leaving me to wonder what's behind that door.
Fcole, do you suppose we might get just a little bit of a hint to guide all of us in the right direction? I also wonder, has someone (or several people) already guessed to correct location?
I'm looking forward to reading more posts to see what everyone is thinking....
Have a terrific morning =D

If you look in the "related articles" section on the right of the page, all of the articles are about screen doors except for the one about the redwood trees. It talks about the Armstrong State Reserve, and the closest LARGE city near there is SANTA ROSA which was my guess all along. Hmmmmmm
Posted by Erin – March 29, 2008 12:34 PM
hello everyone, so glad there's a new clue! I'm going to go with Redwood City, it fit's with the other clues more than the armstrong state reserve. Mainly because of clue number nine. It's more in that area than the reserve is. Good luck everyone!

In the project material list
all the wood is Redwood. On
the right the 4 of the 5 related
links area about screens. The
fifth is different; being about
the actual Redwood tree.
At the bottom of the "Magnificent
Redwoods" article there are lists.
Under Resources" and "Guests"
all addresses are Guerenville, CA.
"grouping where one of the
`members` isn't quite like the
others? "
All `cept one address ~
Duncan`s Mills, CA.
It seems we are all around
the same general area. Russian
River District, Somoma County
/Valley, Bodega Bay, Jenner,
Guerneville, Cazadero, highway

area is quite simply gorgeous!
Maybe the 10 clues do not
have to all tie directly to
the place. More like related
with a narrowing the scope each
time.

Dear HGTV:
Okay, here we go...I've been doing some real investigative work here (I've spent hours scanning the computer for any information regarding areas at and around Sonoma, California)...and, now I am convinced I know exactly where you are building the 2009 Dream Home...it only makes sense...especially with the last clue...the grapevines tell it all, along with the Redwood tree & building with Redwood (Armstrong Redwoods maybe)! I'm saying that I truly believe Sonoma, California, is where you are going & from all the homework I've done in that area...it is only fitting that you would build a beautiful home in the Armstrong Estates! I've looked at some that have already been build there & they are absolutely beautiful....Every house is different, from farmhouse style to Arts & Crafts influence to Queen Anne!!! I can only imagine that you have the perfect spot for the lucky next winner of the HGTV 2009 Dream Home! After all, I can see Jack standing on the property from his prior clue!! I am so excited...wondering what type of home you are building...I am in love with the wine country!!! Please tell me I'm right?

I would suspect that the new home would be in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It is near San Francisco, Santa Cruz has a Boardwalk (monopoly) and is on Monterey Bay. I also believe that Redwood State park is in the area.

A brief overview of some salient facts and figures on Humboldt County, center of California's Redwood Coast.
Tall Ships make port in Eureka
apr 17 - apr 22 .........
This place has to much fog for me,.
Patrick's Point has night and morning fog almost all year. During the summer it sometimes doesn't lift for days at a time although beautiful, crystal-clear days can often be enjoyed in spring and fall.
Rainfall averages about sixty inches a year, most of it falls between October and April.
Waterfront Drive, Eureka . When was the last time you sailed into the sunset on a pirate ship? Here's your chance,The Lady Washington (Pirates of the Carribean) & The Hawaiian Chieftain are coming to Humboldt Bay=ALOHA
A dramatic shoreline ranging from broad sandy beaches to sheer cliffs that rise high above the Pacific Ocean offers great opportunities to explore tide pools, search for agates and driftwood, watch whales=Black and white, sea lions and brilliant sunsets.North Coast Wine Tour- + Itinerary
Humboldt County has more than 13 local wineries and vineyards. Come sample some of our flavorful wine and tour the wineries. Here is a four day itinerary of wine tasting and activities in Humboldt County....so much to do and is my answer with maybe a bit of (TMI)
Dyerville Loop Road Myers Flat- - Elk Prairie Vineyard is a Humboldt County winery producing delicious Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet France, which is also an area where there are many farms and fields Wheat, Lamb, Sheep, Deer and a wilderness. Apples from red to Green, fruits, veggies flowers and so much, more, there are large farms to go to where you can even pick your own from all listed here......
I noticed on one of the clues that the color used in the Poolhouse, the doorframe going out, is the color of eggplant which is Purple and the name Aubergine means eggplant in France.Adorni Recreation Center
Adorni Center 1011 Waterfront Drive - The City of Eureka's Recreation Facility. Conference room and gymnasium with kitchen, availble for rent. Weight room, gym and showers available for membership or drop-ins. This is fun and I would love to know where the DH Home will be located just like all the others.
For the time I am counting on Humboldt County,CA being where the hgtv DH will be built.

FCOLE: ARE WE LOOKING TO THE EASTERN HORIZON FROM GUERNEVILLE...PERHAPS AS FAR INLAND AS SANTA ROSA? LET'S SAY, MAYBE, FOUNTAINGROVE RANCH? As a matter of fact, the development of SKYFARM would be just fine with me. A flyover of the area would be perfect---a quick jump and I could be right on the golf course in no time. Still, most any location in Sonoma County(?) is ideal; vines, wines, rivers and redwoods, hot springs, cool breezes, and oh, did I mention fine wines?
Posted by DBCoop – March 30, 2008 12:43 AM
Some people think that the site of the 2009 Dream Home will be in Redwood City,CA. I am 99% sure that it wil be in Redwood Shores, CA.
Posted by Cameron – March 30, 2008 12:54 AM
fcole...are you by any chance referring to "long point to long point"? Referring to the longitude and latitude on Long Point, California?
Posted by nonnii – March 30, 2008 2:11 AM
The location of the new Dream Home for '09
in Redwood Regional Park in Oakland Hills,
San Francisco Bay Area.
Posted by Marie Conti – March 30, 2008 2:45 AM
Looking at the environment, the only place that
this could be in the SF Bay Area would be Redwood Shores, CA. Otherwise, I would guess
someplace around Sacramento or Folsom area or
Palm Springs area in CA.
Please disregard my answer for Napa and Oakland
because this isn't the environment as that
featured in your photos.

I am astonished at what others are saying they see behind the door! I see wind chimes and a dog sitting on the patio facing to the left! It is difficult to see, but it looks to me like a Siberian husky. Then it does seem that Duncan Mills is the clue in Magnificent Redwoods. If that is the case, I read that it is along the Russian River. The Siberian Husky is a Russian dog breed. I don't know!! Maybe I'm way off, but can't anyone else see the dog??
Posted by Julie in RI – March 30, 2008 7:50 AM
Ok, here's my next guess....the land behind the HOLLYWOOD sign....somewhere near the redwood forest???? See, I don't know alot about California. When I was in jr/high school, there was a song called "San Fransisco"...(be sure to wear a flower in your hair) by Scott McKenzie. It has always been a dream of mine to visit. So with that said, I hope whoever wins will truely appreciate and take care of the dream home.

Has anyone who lives in an apartment ever won an HGTV Dream home or Green Home, or are the winners always homeowners?
Posted by Alyssa – March 30, 2008 9:30 AM
Dear HGTV:
Thank you for such great clues...I'm happy that I'm the only one that has figured them out..your clue "Look Behind the Door" has been completely ignored...No one has figured out that there is a grape vine growing out there..and, the member in a grouping, not like others, is the fact that you use resources to pass on an important clue: "Armstrong Woods State Reserve!!" Well, hello....Grapes (Sonoma) Armstrong (Armstrong Estates)!! Has anyone read my other Posts?? I've nailed this one!! Thank you HGTV!!!!

About the 'behind the door' clue. In figure 'c' there is a yellow and black item (utility knife?). I know it is underneath the door, but coud it be considered behind the door? And, what could it signify?
Posted by Bonnie – March 30, 2008 11:38 AM
Hello fcole, Is HGTV doing a live presentation on the 2nd of April, when the Dee's get the keys or is that when they will be filming for later viewing? How LUCKY is LUCKY????? It was 19 last night a little cold!!!!!! I don't know anything about CA. I can't make a guess even with the clues. It is somewhere in the mountains with a farm area below from that first snip-it.Have a GREAT day!!!!
Posted by Mary – March 30, 2008 11:48 AM
After more thought, I think the second clue about groupings is from the groupings on the same page as the picture and that would seem to be Magnificent Redwoods, not the grouping on the Magnificent Redwoods page so the answer to the clue may be Redwoods not Duncan Mills. Again--Siberian Husky (Russian dog) sitting on the patio behind the door and Russian River. Somewhere around Russian River?
Posted by Julie in RI – March 30, 2008 11:50 AM
I hope when all is said and done, we can see the list of clues and how they actually play out in the site location. How about it? :-)
Posted by robin – March 30, 2008 11:56 AM
If you look behind the top portion of the screen door you can see the initials RH so I say the person who said Redwood Highway is correct.
Posted by PFH – March 30, 2008 12:00 PM
Whew! After reading all the posts, I think I need another clue! I have some ideas, having looked at all the clues again, but...I'm hoping one more will be more enlightening. Then, you can tell us the location :-) I am having fun here.
Please, please, please, pick me! Pick me! My entire family would be delighted.
Posted by cathy5678usa – March 30, 2008 4:22 PM
Well, from the Redwood clues, Duncans Mills sounds like a likely candidate for the next dream home. However, it's a long way from Portola Valley (Clue #9)....certainly not nearby in any sense of the word and no where near a bay.
Posted by Valerie – March 30, 2008 4:35 PM
OK- somewhere in Sonoma County, near Santa Rosa, perhaps... Somewhere near the Armstrong State Redwood Reserve. That's my best guess...
Posted by Carrie Leilani – March 30, 2008 5:01 PM
I know it's San Diego, CA. YEAH!!!
Posted by Alexis – March 30, 2008 6:29 PM
Sebastopal, CA in Sonoma County? They grow apples! The beach area, the redwoods, the Russian River; they're all close by. Or is it Guerneville, CA (too easy)? I can't play anymore; this is getting too addictive. And for everyone else, don't forget to read the 11th post. Maybe it will help someone. Aloha.

I think the 2009 Dream Home will be built in Monte Rio, California. WOW - it is beautiful there.
Posted by Debby – March 30, 2008 6:50 PM
okkk....
The picture clearly says at the address/url bar it says
red wood screen door.
now if you search there are only 2 redwood citys in the U.S. and that is Redwood, Minnisota
and Redwood, California.
but
Redwood, California has trees in all of its pictures, and in the picture of the door, there are trees all around it.
Clearly its telling you that its is in Redwood California
Posted by Jewel Oddo – March 30, 2008 6:57 PM
My guess is in Napa. Spanning between Napa,County and Sonoma, County is a road called Redwood Rd. It also fits in. Redwoods, grapes, wine, hills, movie stars, what more could you want. Not far to the sea on one side and Mountains all around. Even views of the bay from some sites. Where ever it is out here please make sure it is built tough enough for earthquakes. All the faults out here are really strained especially Rogers Creek fault. Northbay or Southbay is a rocken and rollen place. Natural disasters lurk every where just be prepared!
Posted by Mary – March 30, 2008 7:39 PM
Another idea is Marin County around San Rafael. If you look at all the clues from scrabble boards, the bay-wallhanging and clue 9 and 10 photo's Marin is centrally located from all clues. The picture window in clue 9 looks like the Marin Hills and it's right off the bay, hills, and sand. We have sun, wind, breezes, rain, dry close to the zoo. Driving distance to just about to everything mentioned on the scrabble board and close to Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.
Posted by Mary – March 30, 2008 8:20 PM
What about Big Sur? I've been raised in California and stand by my claim that California's true beauty doesn't begin until you go to the Northern third of the state. Breath taking (though not always sunny) all year long.
Posted by Shari A – March 30, 2008 10:28 PM
grouping of members not quiet like the others.....Duncan Mills,Ca was mentioned & different out of the 3 rangers or maybe Redwoods City ? Is it located near the Portola Redwoods State park? Ok.... FCOLE where's our little house clue ( like on the photos) to help guide us?
Posted by Carrie Miracle – March 30, 2008 10:45 PM
I think it's located in, or around Bodega Bay http://www.bodegabayhomes.com/realestate/bodegaharbourframe.htm
Posted by Sheila – March 30, 2008 10:47 PM
Take a look at the diagonal cross member beam-"behind the door". Grouping of the curtains are off as well. I'd say perhaps Napa or Vineland or Sonoma, Calif. I hope I'm wrong for I am not crazy about California. Either way, I hope the home is like the 2006, Lake Lure, NC. home which was the best one yet.
Posted by Sue – March 31, 2008 2:12 AM
Still dreaming. We all know it will be beautiful. The question is where right? I don't know the areas of California, but I do know someone will be a very very lucky person to win this home.
Posted by deb – March 31, 2008 8:29 AM
I think it will be Guerneville, CA!
Posted by Mary – March 31, 2008 11:23 AM
FCole, Has the excact spot(lot) for the DH09 already been decided? Or, are you guys still scouting out the property and waiting for aprovals? It sounds like the area has been decided but not the property. Please answer, I am chomping at the bit.
Posted by Graciela – March 31, 2008 12:01 PM
TO Marie Miller: I did read your post with interest, but I think that they are trying (and succeeding), in throwing people off the path. The thing that didn't belong in the grouping was the article about the Magnificent Redwood. A very generic clue considering we pretty much had that figured out anyway. Clue #10 is all about the Redwood. I think people are overthinking it. I'm sticking with my original guess (Santa Cruz).
I believe there is is a state park (Big Basin Redwood)on the Santa Cruz boundary. Santa Cruz is also on a bay, was called the city of lights, has a famous boardwalk which won the golden ticket award, etc., etc. - you name it, it fits.
FCOLE: Thanks for answering my questions! My fave is the house in Tyler, TX, although I love them all!
Well, have fun everyone!
Posted by Carol R. – March 31, 2008 12:09 PM
"Behind" the door, I definitely noticed the letters "R" and "H". I think most of you agree it's California, Northern, Portola Valley and Redwood connected. Redwood Highway is further north though.
Can't wait for another clue. I'm an East Coaster myself so although I enjoy visiting California, I am not sure I could live there. I'll wait to see the house before I consider entering the sweepstakes. I am in for the Green, absolutely!
Posted by Barb B – March 31, 2008 1:07 PM
I think the 2009 DH will be in Sonoma County, near Lake Sonoma and the Dry Creek Valley. Go back and look at Clue #4, the Scrabble board includes "lake", "Dry", "Road". Dry Creek Road runs right through Dry Creek Valley to Lake Sonoma.

Posted by robin – March 31, 2008 4:16 PM
Well, I am like the other Mary, I really know nothing about California. So I am looking forward to just reading the clues from the smart bloggers and waiting for the answer. Ever since I saw pictures in textbooks, as a child (the 1960's) of people driving their cars through the Redwood forests, I have longed to see these trees. I know they are smarter now, and don't allow all that pollution and disruption to nature, but they truly must be glorious trees. God is so amazing!
Posted by Mary – March 31, 2008 5:22 PM
To the folks guessing Redwood/Deadwood City. Although a very nice area, and under going a redevelopment, I cannot imagine it being the Dreamhome location.
There is a population of over 75,000 people living there with a density of 3,871.3 people per square mile. It's a city, nice but not dreamhome material.

What door are you people looking behind? No one else can see the dog sitting on the patio. It's sitting facing to the left in the picture, and it looks like a Siberian Husky. Fcole told us that what was behind the door was a clue. A Siberian Husky is a Russian bred dog. The second clue apparently makes Duncan Mills the one that doesn't fit with the others. Duncan Mills is along the Russian River! Please, somebody!!! Tell me you can see the DOG!

HI FCOLE: Thinking about clue #9 you mentioned there are 5 rooms and the description of one is not far off from the mark.."Vivid in the Valley" is in Portola Valley. Clue #10 Carter is building a Redwood screen door and the next pic shows him putting screens in this door and it looks like apple trees behind him...Apple orchards".
I have been really exercising my brain and I have come up with the next HGTV 09 Dream Home will be in Woodside, CA. Here are the clues why I say it
is Woodside.
#1. It is one of the wealthiest areas in the US today.
#2. English settlers arrived in the early 19th century to log the rich stands of redwoods.
Much of Woodside is wooded with redwoods dominating in the western hills. I can see why Carter would be building a Redwood screen door. The purpose of putting screens in a screen door is to keep animals, insects and other pests out.
#3. During the CA Gold Rush, 20 yr old Mr. Parkhurst purchased 127 acres and named it "Woodside" and was known by the late 19th Century as country estates "Filoli".
#4. It is a short commute to Silicon Valley which is known as home to high-tech businesses. Technology slowly replaced the orchards.
#5. Horses are part of the local culture. The town government maintains a network of horse trails.
#6. Several well known people live here. Steve Jobs CEO of Apple Computer has a house here along with a lot of well known actresses.
#7. Alot of your well known films have also been filmed here along with television.
#8. To sum it all up San Francisco BAY (BAY clue from FL) lies to the east, Pacific Ocean (Globe clue) beaches lie to the west. The Santa Cruz Mtns separate WOODSIDE from the ocean and extend down to Monterey BAY. I think it would be a FANTASTIC SPOT for the next HGTV DREAM HOME.
Keep up the fantastic work FCOLE you have sure keep my brain thinking. Can not wait until the next clue.
Posted by Charlene – April 1, 2008 11:52 AM
I think it is in the Redwood Forest, California.
I can't wait until the next clue
for the Dream Home 2009. I would
love to go to the Redwoods National
Park.

Dear fcole,
There seem to be a lot of bloggers who are still hung up on the Scrabble word clues. Could you please bring everyone up to speed in your next post as to whether any of those are still strongly relevant? My interpretation was that those word clues were just hints to the state of California as the general location. Now that we know the state, could you please tell us which clues specifically relate to the actual county or community HGTV is selecting? Many, many thanks!

ALL of these clue words are mostly used from the location of where DH is going to build in 2009 and I have a feeling they will be building near to where the VIVD IN THE VALLEY home is located I want to guess with in 5 mile radius from that home. I also think the home built in 09 will be within a mountain for not only the beautiful sunsets but as well as to get away from the mass amount of people that live in and around San Fran there and all the visitors. Please don't get me wrong by saying this, it's great to have a place in utter silence at times. . GLOBAL WARMING is what I used from the GLOBE clue in the FL Key's home. Thanks for reading this..and good luck to all, as I know how much time is involved doing the research, notes and the many hours spent working on all the clues.

Especially recognizing the photos that we've seen with Jack looking down at the area around Sonoma, and the views out the yellow window...All the previous clues given so far have been indicating all the areas around Sonoma...they could be from San Franciso to the Russian River around Guernville, not to mention Santa Cruz as it is just a short "journey" from Sonoma!! Believe me, I've figured this one out!! The next HGTV Dream Home will be build in Sonoma, California! Thank you for your interest in my comments.

FCOLE- CAN YOU TELL US IF THE SIGHT IS IN A BEDROOM COMMUNITY?? My next guess is Santa Barbara County, in the Santa Ynez Valley. Possibly near Solvang (means SUNNYFIELD IN Norwegian). There is also Los Olivos and Ballard (a sleepy upscale bedroom Village) There is a little bit of everything to do in this area. I really like this area and think it would be the perfect sight for a Dream home.

Ok, if I am reading this correctly, I have to agree that the clue is "Redwood". But for different reasons than those stated. In the clue this is puposfully stated:
And if you're paying close attention, you might pick up something else on that page that's related to where we're going. Maybe there's a grouping where one of the members isn't quite like the others?
To the right of the article on the page is a section called "related articles", copy/pasted here:
Related Articles
Replace a Ripped Screen
Screen Door Trim Repair
Install Screen Door and Replace Lattice
Screening in a Porch
The Magnificent Redwood
Every "related" article has the word "screen" except the last which obviously says "Magnificent Redwood" - here is an HGTV link discussing a particular variety of Redwood called "The Magnificent Redwood" :
http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/gl_trees_shrubs_evergreen/article/0,,HGTV_3645_2177135,00.html
At the bottom of "this" link, is a link to where these "Magnificent Redwoods" are located:
www.parks.ca.gov
And yes, in this article it states that the "Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve" is located in Guerneville, Ca - that is in the "North Coast" region of California in "Sonoma County".
Soooooo ...... woo hoo ..... beautiful, coastal, wine country ..... ahhh, now "that" really does sound like a great spot for a "dream home"
:)

Sorry everyone, I totally discounted clue #9 (not on purpose.) It says that it's not far from the place mentioned (porta valley.)O.k. clue #10 is about the Redwoods. Big Basin Redwood State Park is not far from there and it has a golden and a silver falls close by each other. And of course Santa Cruz with it's Boardwalk isn't far either. Now to find a good comfortable spot around there, were we could have alot of property and a BIG house.

I am going to go way out and say that dream home 09 will be built on
Catalina Island

Marie Miller 4/2 blog, by golly I think you have nailed the location. Armstrong Estates does fit the clue's. I wonder if the Dream Home will be the featured model they show? Carter Oosterhouse was or still is a model, maybe that's why they used him for the clue. If so the home is already built, and it sure is BEAUTIFUL!!! GOOD SLEUTHING MARIE!!!!

Looked long and hard and did not see a dog...thanks fc for setting that to rest. Thought I wasn't seeing things...smile.
How 'bout Fontana, California?
Posted by msmaxsings – April 2, 2008 4:08 PM
FCOLE, if you say there is no dog, I believe you. But...you said to look behind the door--I am assuming you mean the redwood screen door. If you look at the picture again through the bottom half of the door yourself, you'll see what I mean. It does look like there is a dog there, but from what you say, it is an illusion.

It's definitely Sunnyvale, California.....all of the clues match up!!!!!!!!! Yay....Sunnyvale sounds like a great place to live!
Posted by Lynn – April 2, 2008 4:39 PM
In clue 10 all of the windows in the picture are clear except for the top of the screen door, it is fuzzy, and if you look carefully you see the letters R and H "behind the door" (as stated by an earlier post). The letters R and H are the clue, but what does that mean? The earlier post stated she thought it meant Redwood Highway, what's near there?
Posted by Deb (T) – April 2, 2008 5:12 PM
OMG This is so funny. You guys are being WAY to literal about the title of "look behind the door for a clue." My interpretation was that it was just a clever segway to let the readers know that the article was about a door, a screen door. And a DOG? Russian dog meaning russian river!? That's a bit of a stretch. LOL - I am cracking up right now!!!! FCOLE - they must think you stay up all hours of the night photoshoping dogs into the pictures :)

As did Marie M, I looked at the idea of Armstrong Estates (AE) in Sonoma as the DH09 location. These are high-end, top quality homes on 1/2 acre lots, priced over $3mil. As related to the clues so far, it has potential; however, AE is an owner/developer property. That is, an individual owns the land in the development, and that individual owner is also the sole builder of each home on lots sold there. Whether he would give up some, most, or all control of the building process to HGTV/Scripps is unknown. Considering the weak real estate market, I know that some owner/developers are indeed selling off lots and allowing other builders in just to keep the cash flow going. So who knows, except for FCOLE and a few others at HGTV. I guess we'll have to wait for another clue from FCOLE to lead us on yet another chase through the N CA redwoods.
By the way, there is a Redwood Hill Road in the custom-home development of Fountaingrove/Skyfarm communities in the foothills North of Santa Rosa, overlooking and to the East of Mayacama Golf Course. Another possible DH09 location setting? Yet another one of history's unsolved mysteries!

Hi Jan: Thank you for agreeing with me...I do not believe the house has been built yet..I am most excited to see what plan they come up with...an "Arts and Crafts" type home would be a dream come true for me!! I'm so excited about where this Dream Home is going to be built...I can hardly contain myself. Anyway, thanks again!

Dear HGTV: A lot of people are still hung up on seeing the shadow beyond the screen door as a Husky dog...please, please take a good look...there is a shadow that does appear to be a dog, however, look very close...you will see that there is a grape arbor right outside the door with grapevines trailing from each side and over it...you can also see grape leaves showing through on the sheer curtains! I believe the rest of the faded areas are a lot of shadowing caused by the vines! Hope this helps everyone!!
Have a GREAT day!

All you people who are hung up on Southern California area....there are no redwoods down there. Redwoods like the mist and they like it cool.

Yep, it's in Woodside where Steve Jobs, of Apple Computer, has a home. Do you guys see the apples on the table? Terrific. Only 20 miles from my house!

has anyone considered the possibility that HGTV might build a houseboat in the san francisco bay?

Looks to me that the curtains have Palm Trees on them. I also noticed a wind chime outside and it is very sunny. I missed that episode of Carter Can (He's so good looking its hard to look at everything else) anyway, Back to the subject. I am not sure WHO doesn't belong there? Or is it an object that doesn't belong there?
Looks like a Carolina Cherry laurel tree in the room. That doesn't say much, even though they do better outside. Quick I can' wait for another clue! CA is like all the states rolled into one. Even if you got better with the clues it would still be rally hard to figure out.
Can you at least let us know if it is in Southern, Central, or Northern CA PLEASEEEEEE

I would love an HGTV dream home in Redwood Valley, California! Sit on the deck and sip my wine.

FCOLE, Can you tell us when HGTV is actually going to announce the 09 specific location? Perhaps they are waiting for the show of the Green Home winner announcement in June to announce the next Dream Home. Hopefully, earlier.

Dear HGTV: Once again, I am going to recap what I think all the clues mean:
(1) Never built in California before;
(2) Will be built somewhere close to the Pacific Ocean;
(3) "Knot" Mountain Zone;
(4) This one is hard..so many choice words! Almost all these words could describe California, but I would guess my three clue words would be: Zebra (San Francisco Zoo); Beef (Sonoma/Napa areas produce the finest grass fed gourmet-style beef grown in the CA); & Apple (Sebastopol, which is a stone's throw from Sonoma, has the best Gravenstein Apples(abundant apple orchards)!
(5) It will be built West of the Mississippi;
(6) Making money (wine vineyards) & going for the "Big Green"..Sonoma has a beautiful Golf Course! Also, Santa Cruz is close to the "Valley" with its Boardwalk & Park Place & Monterey with all the beautiful golf courses;
(7) Take a journey to the City of Lights; Clue: BAY; this has to be San Francisco...only a short distance from the "Valley!!"
(8) 31st State: California..all of the above pertain to the beautiful state of California!!
(9) "Yellow" tranmits to sunny & I can't think of a sunnier valley in California than the beautiful Sonoma Valley...in Sonoma you can feel the sun on your face, and marvel at the emerald hillsides, blossoming fruit trees, and fields of "yellow" mustard. Nothing more beautiful than the buds on the grapevines. I grew up in Sebastopol, California, and it would be hard for me to miss the view out the window on the Good Friday clue...it is without a doubt a view of the beautiful hills surrounding Sonoma, California.
10. Picking up something related to where we are going: Biggest clue ever from the Screen Door clue: The Grapes that are growing on the arbor right outside over the patio...Sonoma is right in the middle of "wine country!" Maybe there's a grouping...well under "Related Articles" #5 "The Magnificent Redwood" article speaks of the "Armstrong State Reserve"..well, not only is this reserve close to Sonoma, but there is another clue contained here...Armstrong!! This is the most significant clue as I believe it pertains to the exact location of the next Dream Home....Armstrong Estates!
It would be a dream come true for me to win this dream house as my children & all my grandchildren live in Sebastopol and Santa Rosa area. When I retired, it was way too expensive for me to buy a home in that area, so my husband and I live in Oregon now. When I close my eyes, I can almost taste the air in the hills of Sonoma...something you don't forget as a child!!
Anyway, my guess is that the 2009 Dream Home will be built In Armstrong Estates in Sonoma, California...please!!!!
Thank you HGTV...I love you!!

I see a rocking horse behind that door. Rocking horse???? hah? Is that a clue? My attention has been caught.

I just read all the comments. I am sure somebody is really going to have a great home in a great location. All of my family on the west coast but I currently reside on the east coast. I do not get to go home as often as I would like. The one thing I really miss is the mountains and trees. It is pretty flat here in Florida. This has been a trip down memory lane to all the places my dad took me when I was a kid and all the fun we had....

Ok, I'm lost. The clue says look behind the door, I did. It looks like grapevines to me,but I am not familiar with alot about California. Don't get me wrong, I could easily retire to a home like this, it's just that there seem to be so many others who know the areas. Guess I will have to read their comments and wait for the next clue.
Posted by deb – April 3, 2008 10:24 AM
I have no idea where DH09 will be... other than CA :)
@DBCoop – I'm so ready to find out the exact location too. Looking through the property records in Monroe County, FL, where the DH08 is located... it looks like the community where that home was built is owned by a private developer as well. So Marie's guess of the Armstrong Estates may be right on.

My vote is the next HGTV home will be build in Sonoma, California. How awesome! Hey HGTV Dream Home Team can I come and help you build this home? Wouldn't this add excitement to the 2009 Dream Home. (hey you never know unless you ask RIGHT)

It is Northern California. The only question is how far north. The farther north you go, the more average rainfall. I live on top of a hill (in a rented house) In Las Lomas, Ca. From my patio I can see across the Monterey Bay to Monterey. The best thing about where I live is the fact that I have blooms on plants year around. This year my passion flower vine starting blooming in September and still has a couple of blooms on it. It is beautiful country out here. So many people are talking about high taxes and cost of living. Yes, it's true but I would not live anywhere else. If I would win the 2009 Dream Home, I would have to sell it and buy a cheaper house. I could live with that.
Posted by Joline – April 3, 2008 11:31 AM
For sure it is something to do with grapes.. Grape arbor outside screen door and grape vines behind Carter. I don't know Calif, so I am at a loss.

I appreciate everything HGTV has done in the past few years with the Dream House Give-a-away, but even if you win; if your not a millionaire or close to it, you can't afford the dream and will have to sell it quick... That's the sad part... I wish HGTV would scale things back a bit, pay the IRS for your winnings, pay the first years property taxes and give the winner a chance to adjust his or hers life to decide if they want to permanantly relocate to the Dream...
As it stands right now the contest should be renamed the "HGTV Millionaires Dream Home" because those are the only people capable of moving right in and experiencing the Dream...
I don't have a clue where the next Dream House will be... I sort of lean toward the Smokies and a quieter life style... Who knows, maybe one day HGTV will come to realize that they can truly make someones hopes and dream come true... I don't believe the majority of people who enter the contest realize the size of the finacial responsiblity they have if they do win...

FCOLE- A question for you. Why do you refer to yourself as a BOY, when asked what your gender is? The first time you said you were a GO0FY BOY and this time you said BOY. Is that a clue or do you look like BOY GEORGE (just kidding).
Inquiring minds want to know!!! (Oh cool, a Culture Club reference! But no, I look nothing like Boy George. Just an expression. fc)

Did everyone know that Hwy 101 is also known as Redwood Highway? Maybe that has something to do with it. Check out San Pablo Bay...very near Hwy 1o1 aka Redwood Highway. Lots of parks and lots of "green". Very near Santa Rosa. Just throwing it out there...hope it helps.
