Does anyone know what is going on with the - what looks like - empty lots on each side of the house?

My husband and I were visiting our favorite place, Islamorada in October, found "our" future dream home location, and wished so much we could have toured it; however, the film crew was there, so we had to unfortunately scurry away. So, please, take a tour, and observe this beautiful home that will be ours one day. We would love to share the beauty and tranquility of this home that will one day be the home of all of our fishing rods! Love the colors! Love the floors. Love the location! For a family that loves the Keys, especially Islamorada, fishing, and the relaxed and friendly town that homes this home, all I can say, is WELCOME HOME KERRI & WESS!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, I won't be able to get to tour the Dream Home in person, but hope many will. FCOLE AND COMPANY; Please give us a SURPRISE on Jan. 1st and tell us there is a DUMB WAITER. Not for just taking laundy and groceries up, but also for taking prepared foods down. I picture myself making salads and baked beans, while down below the grill is heating for hotdogs, burgers, chicken or the fresh caugh fish. We will dine on that beautiful patio furiture and watch the sunset. Love the diversity of the bloggers. Some love the DH, some hate it, colors too abrasive, some too bland. But I really love the comments from the Floridians: building codes, high elevation, insurnce, taxes, but most of them really know the Keys. I love Islamorada. Good Luck to all who would love to win this Dream Home. May it be a very Happy New Year for one of us. Just dreamin' .

My wife and I visit the Keys often from our Miami home. Not sure exactly where the dream home is located but I can tell you that Islamorada is really, really nice. We often take our two young boys to feed the tarpon at Robbie's, have pan seared snapper at Key Largo's Fish house etc. The dream home would be real nice to have.
Posted by Anthony – December 26, 2007 8:56 PM
WOW, that is truely a DREAM home! Growing up in Miami and making the drive to the Keys as a kid , that is the kind of house I always dreamed of...what a great place for a my family and son to grow up in!
Ahhh, I should be so lucky!

I really like this years dream home. I always wanted to move from Texas. Look out everyone! I am the next winner! After almost 10 years of entering, this is my year!

Thanks for allowing 100% of the tour proceeds to go to the florida keys children's shelter. It's wonderful to know that you are helping the children of the community!

To the person who asked what was up with the empty lots on either side of the house . . . They are going to be filled with other houses. It's all part of a planned community. Visit the developer's website and you can see what it will look like when finished.

I've read through all the bloggers comments HGTV and hope you took notes this year. This is the most negative feedback I've seen on the Dream Home. You were on the right track in the past, by building something special, but this house feels like a condo. This house can't be bigger than 2000 square feet and really is a mess. Someone described the house as open and airy???? This house is chopped into 3 floors of small rooms, and I don't think refridgerator should be in such a small space....can you say SAUNA ROOM. I will enter, even if I don't like the home. I can sell the house and build my own dream home, as someone noted earlier "we all have our different idea of a dream home." Good luck to all and Happy New Year!!!

These lots will be developed with additional homes (see the "Shores at Islamorada" link under "Property." It will show you what homes are to be built and that your bay view will be greatly diminished when buildout is completed. This assumes that the builder stays solvent and completes the project, including the amenities (pool, boat dock). Also note that annual property taxes will be around $15,000 annually. Give it some thought.
Posted by Roger – December 27, 2007 9:13 PM
I think the house is ravishing. While looking at it, I thought to myself: "There is no need for me to even attempt to enter for a chance to win.
If I did win, I could not even afford to pay the taxes.

They are lots. There is going to be homes on both sides. The dream home is at the bottom of a "U" shape.
Posted by Kim Rose – December 28, 2007 7:44 AM
As usual, HGTV has outdone themselves. Great
programs. We watch daily.
We have tried in the past to visit a dream home
only to find them already occupied or too late
for the tour, etc. Our timing this year will be
great. We will be in Florida the month of
February. Will definately plan on visit to
home. Is there any cost?
Posted by Shirley Peters – December 28, 2007 11:36 AM
Brian, the other lots are going to be what looks like, 6 or 7 condo building, centered around the pool which is front of the dreamhouse, just before the water.
Posted by waterbaby – December 28, 2007 12:00 PM
The home is fantasic this year! I was just in the Keys for the 1st time ever last March and would love to have a home there!
Posted by Debbie – December 28, 2007 2:42 PM
I agree with another interested person - there is no accessibility for a handicapped person. Why is that? Would still love to win and would figure out some way to get in there and shouldn't need to come out very often!
Posted by Joyce – December 28, 2007 7:25 PM
I'm so disappointed. All the homes in the past have had a nice flow to them and been decorated beautifully. This home is too "choppy" and there are way too many starfish! It's like decorating a home in Illinois with pictures of maple trees and cornfields.
Posted by Jane – December 28, 2007 7:59 PM
Oh I want this so bad. My grandpa built a resort in Islamorada from his bare hands and, even tho he is no longer here, I go and see it as often as I can.

I will enjoy this home when I win it.I love Islamorada. My family used to have a timeshare there but lost it do to poor management.

This home is our dream. We were in the Keys last year looking for a home but decided to wait because of the prices. This house is what we're looking for at the right price. Good luck to all, but I hope WE get it!
Moving from Way Northern Californai real soon.
Posted by Alex – December 28, 2007 11:34 PM
I love the house and if I don't win, I will be friends with those who do. Look for me to sail past, love the sunsets and ocean diving, I'd submit some pictures but they are all of fish, who are out of school now for winter break just like me!!!
Posted by Lynne – December 29, 2007 6:35 AM
This HGTV Dream Home is totally opposite of what
I thought it was going to become. It is more like
a typical beach rental than a home. The rooms are
really chopped up and it doesn't flow well like
the other dream homes.
Posted by CIndi – December 29, 2007 7:10 AM
No doubt this is more of a dream area, as this is by far the most drab dream home yet. And how would being surrounded by an eventual condo community even be a dream? A dream home comes with a view. Is another house across from yours the dream view you'd all like? HGTV usually does an excellent job with the dream homes, but even the last one had houses on either side of it in another "development". More insight needs to be taken as to "location", and this time, floor plan.ICK!
Posted by Terry Alan Craven – December 29, 2007 8:45 AM
WOW - we love the house and this is what we've been waiting for. This is the first home that we've really, really want to win through HGTV. It's been our goal to move to Florida (from Indiana) once our children were grown (we have 1 graduating this year). My husband & I love the ocean and surf. We are suba divers and this is a great location for diving. There are realities that everyone has to think about before winning/relocating. Do you have the money available for the taxes and fees? Can you relocate with your current job or will you be able to find appropriate employment to afford the upkeep of a $2 million dollar home? We have thought about it and are ready for the move!!
HERE WE COME ISLAMORADA, FL 33036!!!!!!!!!!!!
You're all invited to our new home for the holidays next year........ :-)

Sorry everybody, but this house is already OURS!!! Don't worry, you can drive by and look at it any time you like. We got married in Key West and we love the Keys and this house was built for us...
Posted by The Graham's – December 29, 2007 10:10 AM
The house looks beautiful and HGTV if terrific for giving away such a beautiful home each year. However, winning it could produce a crisis for the average person who could not afford the property taxes as well as a tremendous income tax hit. Does anyne know why no money is being given this year to help offset the taxes?
Posted by Don – December 29, 2007 10:40 AM
I love this house! It is designed and decorated just as it should be for a Keys house. It's got a fun, funky layout (perfect for viewing the water, and is casual enough that you don't have to worry about all the sand, salt, water, etc that might ruin more elegant furnishings. Of course, with an active 2 year old and 2 doggies, I always think of clean-up and durability first!!
Happy New Year everyone! I'll try my best to win!
Posted by Sharon K – December 29, 2007 10:56 AM
I have entered every year, and looks like each year the houses get better and better. This house is beautiful. I wonder how much the taxes would be on a house this nice in Florida? Anyone have any insight on that? While mentioning the downside, has there ever been a winner who was not caucasian? I am entering either way this house is beautiful, but I am curious to know about the taxes and previous winners.
Posted by Denyse – December 29, 2007 12:21 PM
How much taxes would you owe if you won? I saw an article about the 2005 winner in Texas who owed $630,000 after he won. I don't see what else you could do but sell the place. Also, the article stated that you win the house not the property. The property is a lease owned by ???. Maybe after three years they have ironed all of these "small" details out.
Posted by sean c. – December 29, 2007 3:07 PM
I'm a little disappointed. I have always looked forward to this every year. These homes are outrageously expensive to afford even though they are given away. The average American can't afford that much in taxes and association fees. Seems like only the extremely wealthy need apply. It would be wonderful to see HGTV build a lovely home and give it away to an average American family freeing them up from a mortgage payment while still allowing them the opportunity to spend their money on something other than exorbitant fees.
Posted by kellie – December 29, 2007 6:51 PM
Love the house! It is perfect for my husband and me -- we have ventured to Islamorada each year for the past 7 years. We love the area and always said we would retire in the keys and this is our home and our year.

Is there any other people with us on this. The outside of the house and where it is located is beyond amazing. The inside, to say the least isnt amazing. It lacks all the other dream houses have done for me in the past, excite me. The colors are boring, and the kitchen is bigger than my 1st apartment's kitchen. The master bedroom being on the 2nd floor and the kids room on the 2nd floor feels like trouble to me. Maybe it is HDTV's plan to make the interior blah, to get you out and expierence the beauty beyond, however if its bad outside, I don't want to be trapped in this house ready to get out.
Posted by Rich & Todd – December 29, 2007 9:47 PM
What a disappointing house this year! There are only 3 bedrooms, one on each floor??? I have a baby, I cant climb down 3 flights of stairs to check on her. This is more a house for a small family or a summer home. I also found it very small. I did not like the kitchen at all, and I agree that the fridge in the closet is a little out of place. I also would have preferred that one of those little nooks be turned into an office. Overall I would not buy this house if I had the means to do so; my family and I would not be able to live comfortably.
Posted by Tonya – December 29, 2007 11:27 PM
Is there a cash prize? There was one last year, and that would sure help with taxes!
Posted by Nancy – December 29, 2007 11:48 PM
I LOVE the beach...the dream home, not so much. It is definitely small in there. My dream home is the Tyler, TX dream home. If I won the lottery today I'd go right down there and try to take it off of their hands.

This is my dream home and Florida is so amazing. I haven't been to the Keys in years, but remember it well. How can anyone ever forget its beauty. My most fond memory is the ocean. I found a remote spot in the middle of the ocean. There was no land in site. The water was shallow and teal blue. I stood in that spot for hours, I felt like I was walking on water. My husband and I just bought a beautiful home in Louisiana. We are in the middle of a huge remodel and we are about to tear our hair out. God has been so good to us. I will enter everyday and if it's in his plans we will win. Good Luck to everyone!

Lovely home, though I have to say last year's was much more impressive. Still, the colors in this one are bold and fun!
I am curious about what will be built on either side of the home.
And is it just me or is the construction lackluster? Look at the misaligned cabinet doors, for example, in the guest bath. Yikes! Even the decor seems a little rough around the edges -- see the oval frames in the guest room? Not even close to even.
Posted by KJ – December 30, 2007 3:07 PM
wow - went to the developer's site - they are going to squeeze 7 other homes into what looks like two lots - and then put in a pool in front. All the great views from the dream home will be gone - it will just look like a stack of condos. How disappointing.

Our grandson Zackary Gage DeTray (aka as Lucky) was born on May 16. He and his parents live in Marathon. We were able to go by during construction. I have a "small" glass container that I placed a few grains of the beautiful sand within. Each day I shake those and dream of walking barefoot in Florida ... hand in hand with little Lucky DeTray .... on my own property in the beautiful Florida Keys. Texas is simply too far from that sweet face! Oh how I hope our country doorbell rings with the good news that this is our Dream Home!

Really like the home.
Can't wait to see if the mas. bdrm is of the red plaid colors I so much like and suggested.
If Jack has any more surprizes, maybe they will include a boat & trailer, a golf cart and a travel guide/captain. Make life that true bowl of chocolate's. Dee

I'll keep posting this message until it gets out there. What about the taxes you have to pay when you win? The person who won in 2005 owed $630,000 in taxes and they were not the owners of the property. The land was owned by someone else,(the builder?), and the house was built on the leased property. That house was valued at $1.5 million, do the math.

This is one outstanding home, I went on the virtual tour of every room. AMAZING!!! I entered last year every single day, as soon as I would get home from work, a day did not go by without entering the Dreamhome 2007. This Dreamhome is one that fits my dreams, imagination and personality. I absolutely love the ocean, always have, palmtrees are outstanding. I could only dream of this breath taking home. I wish everyone the best of luck who enters and may you all have a wonderful and prosperious New Year.

I have been watching HGTV since i was 11 years old with my mom and i must say that this is truly the home for us. I am now 15 years old and i am dying for my own room where i can hang out and have time to my self. I would love for my mom to win this dream home because she deserves it and she works very hard to provide for her kids and she is nothing but kind and giving to everyone around her and does not expect anything in return. This is definitely the dream home for her and i pray she wins it because it would make her life a lot brighter. Good luck to everyone who enters and wish us luck.

Ok, so the house looks great, but there is one thing missing. Where is the GRILL? You have that amazing back patio area with a great table and the kitchen is on the 2nd floor. Shouldn't there be an outside kitchen or a built in BBQ? maybe I am wrong but if you live in the keys why would you want to cook inside? Espically with that view. I know my opinion may be one side since I am a male but, where is the grill?

I think that this home fits with the landscape. It is the true Florida Relaxed living style. It would be wonderful to own that dream home.
Posted by Christine – December 31, 2007 2:43 AM
The house is gorgeous! My 1 concern as a parent would be the kids room in on the bottom floor. I wouldn't want my 5year old on the bottom floor by him self.

HGTV has done it again. What a great location. We vacationed there years ago, unforgettable. We almost lost my husband in Iraq. We were finally reunited as a family and so happy to be together again only to find out that I have cancer. The stress on my family this year has been tremendous. I can't think of a better blessing than winning a dream home where we can all relax and enjoy each other as a family. We all dive and snorkel so it would be a dream come true. Good luck to all!
Posted by Lena – December 31, 2007 1:17 PM
i know this is in Florida, but really! the colors are extreme. the outside colors look like nemo would be at home. the inside decor is impractical (do you really need a mirror to do laundry? or a pedestal with coral sculpture only for it to reach out and grab some loose towel and topple to the floor.) the past years, by far, exceed this year.
Posted by andrea – December 31, 2007 1:20 PM
The empty lots will be part of this very exclusive community of six or seven houses including the dream house. They are planned to be in a V-shape formation so that each house has a spectacular view. Does anyone know how do you enter?
Posted by Davina – December 31, 2007 1:28 PM
it doesn't matter what anyone else has to say-it's mine! please wrap it up. it's my home and i love it. it must not be yours so please get out of my dream!
i agree with jerry, if you don't like it; don't enter the contest and take it away from the "little folks like us who are always dreaming of a place like this. i love everything about this home. the decor is spectacular. It looks like so much fun. when i win this home i will invite the eldersburgs and the garcias over to come play because they too know how to dream.
Posted by d'lyn – December 31, 2007 3:26 PM
I have lived in rented accomodation my whole adult life. Every year I enter the contest and hope to win. Oh to win such a beautiful house for my children to enjoy. Thank you HGTV for making it possible for a dream to be a reality for some lucky person. Even if I don't win the house the dream sure was nice.
Posted by Sue – December 31, 2007 3:57 PM
It is perfect. All those who have something negative to say about it probably do not need to be entering the contest to begin with especially with so much negativity. I would be very grateful to call that my home. It is a dream home. Right now I live in a garage apartment and I am very thankful to have a roof over my head; however, I would not turn down a dream home like that. Just ignore those other comments and tell those other people to get out of my dream. Call me when you have it wrapped up for me. I love every thing about it including the outdoor shower and if you come to visit me, you better use it when you come off the beach or you ain't coming in! The colors and the decor are perfect for the Keys.

Don't like this years house. The previous homes all sat on their own land. This are so close to the other homes that are going to be built. They don't build family homes. They need more bedrooms and a guest area.
Posted by Becky – December 31, 2007 7:39 PM
S. Curran, I'm not sure where you read your article, but I don't believe you could build a house in Texas and not own the property that it's on. I believe you must have misinterpreted the article that you read. Plus I find it hard to believe that the taxes were that high. I lived in Texas for 10 years and property taxes were reasonable. I'm sure that the taxes are higher than your usual property taxes, because you are also paying taxes on the furnishings, vehicle, etc... The taxes you quoted were almost the value of the house. You sound a little like chicken little. Let people have their dream, they can always walk away if the burden of winning this home is to great.
Posted by gavarner – December 31, 2007 9:45 PM
Past dream homes have been something to dream about. This one is not what I would consider extrordinary in any way, and the master bath - should we say lacks any modesty. I was surprised that the toilet wasn't out on the balcony.
Perhaps I can dream again next year.
Posted by Linda – December 31, 2007 10:59 PM
This is a fabulous area and the other houses will be just as nice surrounding this dream home. It will be a quaint community with great water access, and hey it's free. Well, of course not all is free, but a lot cheaper than purchasing completely on your own. Go HGTV, I think you are great and watch HGTV daily.
The colors of the home are fun and exciting, I really like the generator for those times needed.
Good Luck Everyone, Happy New Year

Right now, I'm watching the Rose Parade from our home in Utah and remembering last year when HGTV actually inspired us to attend in person, such a fantastic time. I'm so excited to watch the premeire of the dream home tonight, it's a New Year's tradition. Happy New Year everybody and good luck!!!

The designers have outdone themselves! This is a beautiful home. The color palatte is indicitive of the region and is refreshing. Who wouldn't want to live here? After living on Parris Island and wherever the military sent our family for over 20 years this truly is a piece of heaven and to have it professionally decorated...what a treat! To win this would be the best present one could give their spouse!!! I'd worry about the taxes and issues like that later and bask in the Florida sun and drive in the new vehicle enjoying Key West.

Hi,
I'm so excited about touring the dream home and visiting this area. I have been looking for somewhere to visit during a four day mini vacation and i think i have found my spot. I cant wait to come back and tell you all about my experience. Good Luck to you all!!!!!

I think the house is beautiful! The rooms may look small, but they seem great to me. How about those taxes though? Does anyone have an answer to this question, as it has been asked before?

HGTV IS THE BEST!!!
Besides the great decorating tips & the beautiful Dream homes
it’s a total addiction.... I find myself watching it so much my older home
of 2 years is transforming itself into a welcoming place to share with my family.
I have read some comments & I can not see one thing I would not LOVE about this home.. It truly is a dream home - I think more so - because I had a dream the other night & I was sitting on that patio waiting for my family to fly in from the cold - snowy north - yuk!!! I told my family about my dream & they told me to keep dreaming ! What are the chances-well you never know until you try.. I also have relatives in Florida & I would love to be close to them in the winter !!!!! This is the best dream house & I could only hope my dream comes true - good luck to everyone but I do hope its me you see jumping up & down with excitement when I get the news of a life time !!!
Thanks HGTV
I have entered every contest like millions of other & I hope
2008 is the year for my family & friends !!!

Does this Dream Home own all the property to the shore line? That would be wonderful, if not, someone will block this wonderful view by building a large home on the site.

THANK YOU HGTV! YOU ARE THE BEST. MY FRIEND CHERYL AND I THREATEN TO GO TO THE KEYS EVERY DAY AT WORK AND NOW WE WILL HAVE, (IF WE ARE THE LUCKIEST WOMEN IN THE WORLD), A MOST FABULOUS PLACE FOR OURSELVES AND HUSBANDS TO VISIT!!
WE LOVE HGTV!!!!

For those of you who don't belive S. Curran, are you crazy? Look in the rules, you are responsible for all taxes. Just like when you win the lottery, you have to pay a lot of money in taxes on all prizes. It is usually around 25%. The total prize is over 2.2 million, so that is over $550,000 in taxes you have to pay just for the prize!!! Not to mention the annual property taxes for a house like this. Only someone that is already rich can afford to win this prize and keep it. If you don't have half a million dollars sitting around in a bank the only thing you can do is try to sell this house. It is absolutely rediculous that they are letting people think that this is a big dream. Unsuspecting winners will be greatly disappointed when they find out about all of the money they will have to pay to keep this house. I don't understand why they don't make this prize accesible for a DESERVING family without the means to buy their own home. They should at least include enough money as part of the prize to cover all taxes. Anyone else agree with me?
Posted by JB – January 1, 2008 3:48 PM
The house is too small and there are not enough bedroom. Kitchen looks like it was out of a mobile home. The bedrooms are way to small and bland why so much white boring. Last years house was outstanding and hard to follow.

Like the balconies, plenty of areas to enjoy the weather and views. Nice to have 3 stories, with plenty of height and views.
Great shower and bath area, a nice view from here also... love the integrated area of the shower and tub.
For whoever wins it, hope the storm shutters work too. Never know when you might have to throw a hurricane party. ;)

Greetings HGTV,
I have been watching HGTV for many years and "HGTV Dream Home". I've loved the Dream Home locations and exterior designs, but what's going on with the interior designs? The designer seems to be consistenly old fashioned and I think it's time for a change, someone who's a bit more modern. To me, the best designer on HGTV is Candice Olson of Divine Design. Hands down, she is the best and should be the one designing the next Dream Home. For certain, she knows how to design interiors for the modern times in which we live. So please, utilize Candice Olson for your next HGTV Dream Home interior designer. The current designer is getting quite predictable and boring.
I hope you take my advice.
Darlene from Michigan.

it's a condo on the beach you would be at the very back with several other houses to either side of you. it shows lot plans, and houses the style of them to be built. the grass is the common area along with the pool. this dream house should have been on the first lot to either side of the beach not the very back. i can't imagine how much the dues with be. i don't care for the kitchen, the three floors, small but all part of the housing style blending with the other houses. you won't have much of a view when the houses start going up around you.
Posted by katy – January 1, 2008 10:31 PM
Very Disappointed! Starting with the ONE car garage and no elevator for a three story house. What storm protection does it have? The main floor seems small and the kitchen unfriendly for more than one cook. The whole decor is standard "beachy" and not very upscale. The "outdoor" living space will soon be non-private when the other homes are built. I doubt anyone will be eating outside, on display to the neighborhood, and in the blazing sun. Plus getting the food out there would be a big chore! Sorry, this one isn't worth it except as a rental.

My wife Lisa and our 3 boys and two dogs Bailey and Sammi are going to enjoy the home and all the other amenities that the Florida keys have to offer, when we win the home. I agree with the comments about the payment of the taxes and fees associated with winning this home. If you can't afford the association dues and the annual taxes and the income tax bill you will recieve in 2009, then I wouldn't register for the home. Read the fine print on the rules page, it states that you can't transfer the prize or sell it.
Good Luck,
Robert

I love HGTV, and watch it 90% of the time I'm watching TV. I always look forward to the Dream Homes, but am a little disappointed in how small and choppy the rooms are this year. It would be so much nicer if the master bedrooms were palaial in size, with a king size bed. The kitchen is too small, with only 2 upper cabinets, and the refridgerator is placed in a closet. The dining room is truly lacking of beauty, there should be a great outdoor living area with kitchen and fireplace. For a 2 million dollar home in the Keys, it lacks size and pizzazz. The guest would also have to compete, with the tiny bathroom mirror, to get ready when dressing. The entry foyer lacks the beauty of inviting visitors to want to come in to see the rest of the home. This one is somewhat disappointing.

Love, Love, Love the house, my husband and I just visited Islamorada last year, and fell in love with the Keys, and we are on our way there again this year in Feb., we hope to tour our new home then. Hey, we can all dream!!

Happy New Years everyone! In May I was able to visit the site where the dream house was being built. The sight of watching the construction workers building on this beautiful home .... if only for a few brief moments.... has been wonderful memories, but the few grains of sand which I placed in the little jar as been a physical reminder of the beauty of the place. I just took my little vial of sand out of the drawer, shook it, and again dreamed of winning this beautiful property on Islamorada. Thank you HGTV for providing us with such dreams! Linda

What a beauty!! I will be visiting the Key's later this month and can't wait to visit the "Dream Home" in person. Loved the show, the colors, the view, the decorating was just my style! Will give you real time feedback after visiting end of the month. One family will truly be blessed to win this beautiful home.

Very ordinary and underwhelming. They went a bit overboard on the Florida Key motif and you really have to like that style...First thing I would do is put the furniture for sale on Craigslist, then start tearing down some walls to really make it an "Open" Floor Plan.

The Federal Income tax is a real issue as posted by JB. The plain truth of the matter is a person of low or moderate income would be forced to sell the "Dream house". On top of federal income tax of 25 percent of the fair market value of 2.2 million dollars, there is local property tax (assuming you actually own the property) and maintenance costs associated with owning a home designed for a family with a multimillion dollar income. The good news is if you sell the "Dream House" at fair market value, pay all the taxes, and overhead costs. You can buy a home you actually can afford!
They should really call it a "Fantasy House" because HGTV is catering to all our fantasies about becoming wealthy and having a rich and famous life style. Refer to the following web site for a reality check.

I am totally unimpressed with this 'dream' home. It appears to be a smaller home, crazy layout with 3 floors and the entertainment room leaves little to be desired with a wall of windows. The location to me is questionable also. I'm on the west coast, but wouldn't this area be susceptible to hurricanes?
Posted by Kathy – January 2, 2008 3:23 PM
We visit Islamorada every April. Though we live exactly at the other end of route 1, we love the islands of the keys, the animals and of course the beautiful blue waters. Coming from a world of below zero temps and white piles of snow, entering the keys is heaven to us, if only for a week. Whomever wins this home would be truly lucky. Good Luck to all!

I was wondering if someone from HGTV was going to respond to blogg entries? So far, it hasn't been clear that they have.....why, you ask? I, too, am interested in a few clarifications. 1. Do you win the property? 2. What is the storm protection? I find it very odd that there is a "ground floor" (homes on Anna Marie Island up north a bit, for example, must now be on "stilts", over the the projected storm serge. There does not appear to be any hurricane shutters (again, new properties on Anna Marie Island all have them). Can someone from HGTV comment on the code requirements in the Keys (I thought the ones on Anna Marie Island were STATE requirements, but I must be wrong???). Thank you!

What a Beautiful House! It's truly a Dream Home! I am a Florida Native. I was a born in Sarasota, Florida March 1,1966. My husband and I lived on the West Coast of all of lives, until 2003, when we decided to spend our 12 th Anniversary in Weaverville,North Carolina. After, that trip I talked my Husband into us moving to NC in 2003. WE have since taken 2 vacations to West and East Coast of Florida. Each trip, I realized how much I miss living in Florida. It took me leaving Florida to realize how much I belong there. I don't feel connected to North Carolina. I want to move back to Florida more then anything in the whole world. I know this deep in my heart. One day, I hope we can move back to Florida. I watch HGTV all the time. Then I saw the commercial for the 2008 Dream Home giveaway and I knew I had to enter the contest! To win the 2008 Dream Home would be my dream come true!
Best Wishes to All!

These comments are depressing me. You must pay at least $600,000 in income taxes, $15,000 a year in property taxes, money to the "condo" site for the pool and maintenance every year, AND you are not allowed to sell the home, nor do you actually own the property it is located on. Wonderful, no one seems to be winning anything special. :(

I love the 2008 DReam Home! I'm a Native of Florida. I was born in Sarasota, Florida
March 1, 1966. Both my Husband and I grew up in West Florida. I talked my Husband, Mark into moving to Western North Carolina in 2003, after spending our 12th Anniversary there. We have lived in Western North Carolina ever since. We have taken 2 vacations to East & West coasts of Florida since we have lived in North Carolina. Both times we visited Florida, I realized how much I miss and love Florida. I didn't truly appreciate it until I moved away! Then I realized how much I belong in Florida! I want to move back to Florida more then anything in the whole world. My Husband & I have talked about it. We don't know if we will be able to move back. But, I stay hopeful that one day we will be able to move back to Florida. I don't feel connected to North Carolina. I know deep down in my heart that Florida is my home! Everyday I hope that a miracle will happen and we can move back to Florida! If we get to go back, I will be so happy! I will feel an inner peace that I haven't felt since we moved to North Carolina. It's beautiful in Western North Carolina, but I know I don't belong here. Everyone has a special place that they feel connected to, and I know that Florida is mine! I would love it, if we could win the 2008 Dream Home in Florida! It would be a Dream come true! To be able to be near the ocean and sand when ever I wanted, instead of seeing it once every year or every 3 years! Our Family and most of our friends are there. I miss them terribly. I will stay hopeful!
Best Wishes to All!

There is absolutely no doubt that this is my and my wife's dream home. We have a dream of someday living in the tropics. Winning this home would be a god send. But in reality, who can actually afford to win this home. Certainly not me with all of my current financial obligations. The taxes on the vehicle alone would put me out, let alone the property taxes or the income taxes for winning the home. Only people that already have enough money to build their own dream home could really afford this.

To win a home like this would be a dream come true. We have visted the keys only a few times and enjoyed ourselves so much; even though we were camping in tent all 6 of us. I'd appreciate a free week in the house. Audrey from PA

I just logged on to check floor plans. I am amazed and diasappointed that an elevator was not included! All new construction I have stayed in along the southern coast has all included an elevator, not just for disabled people, but to get groceries and luggage upstairs!! with the master on the third floor, I would have thought an elevator would have been a primary consideration.

We haven't been to see the DREAMHOME yet but can't wait to go visit. We just moved to Florida 6 months ago and have been house hunting. We have visited the Florida Keys for numerous vacations. We love Islemorada. We stayed at Cheeca Lodge a few times and loved it. We stayed in Big Pine Key, Hawk's Cay and Key West. We love Islemorada the best. It's beautiful there. It's our favorite "Key". What a dream it would be to win the DREAMHOME. Especially because we don't have a home and are currently looking for one. We will keep entering and keep our fingers crossed that our move to Florida has been a good one and a lucky one!!!!!!!!!!!! Ann & Jack Summerlot

A beautiful Home! We love watching HGTV! My daughter graduates high school this year and as usual my husband and I are "fixing up" our 4th home--my daughter said, "I've never lived in a home that was not under construction!" Unfortunately, we've made no money fixing up, my husband likes to buy houses, watch HGTV, construct, live for a while and find another. He's very handy-I think he needs to be a builder instead of a diesel mechanic! We can't wait to win (I'm dreaming big-no more "fixing up"). My husband has always wanted to go to Key West-maybe this is the cure!

HGTV's dream homes are always a wonderful fantasy including this one. That said...I also have to admit that I agree with every negative comment..not that I want to be a complainer it's just beause the comments are valid and plain truthful. Even though we might not want to hear down sides to our dream..you can't argue with the truth. I don't want to dwell on what the house is lacking...no elevator, no storm shutters, no covered outdoor kitchen, the small cluttered rooms etc. I mean how many of you would drag all those wicker chairs outside to dance in the TV room. Winning this or any home would be a dream and we all know about not being able to pay the taxes and how most folks would have to sell the home. Hey..you still come out ahead. Last year's location was cold and this one is hot but still the location is amazing and HGTV used the vendors who were supplying the merchanise and the developer's plan for 3 story homes squeezed on the property. It's a well built home and anyone would be blessed to have their name announced as the grand prize winner. Hats off to the folks at HGTV.

This house is beautiful!! It is a dream, I want to win it, I would love to live in it, but ideally, I would sell it to a person or family who would take pride and joy in owning this house, and to someone who would enjoy this house for many years!! I think HGTV did a fantasic job, and think on a positive note, they created something different than years past!....
Posted by Tracey – January 5, 2008 6:04 PM
Someone asked if any of the past Dream Home Winners were able to keep the houses. From what I have read, not one single winner is living in the home. All were sold due to not being able to afford to stay and pay the income tax, let alone the property taxes and upkeep. But, they did come out with some decent profit and were able to build their own homes. Also, you dont owe the income tax until NEXT April 15th (2009) because it is considered this years income. This year there seems to be no cash prize as in years past to help with costs. Not sure why that is.
By the way, you can all dream but this house is mine! I have "the secret" on my side :)

I feel in love with your home and the choice of the location. Last year Dec.5,2006 I fell where I was working in the parking lot of a Nursing home and broke my neck. Later doctors put a metal disc with 4 screws implanted in my neck. This year I started loosing feeling in my arms, nerve damage. I am disabled by the state and would just be thrilled to have a chance to start over and wake up to warm sunny days and those beautiful views at night overlooking the water. It has got to be just like living in heaven. I can not say enough about watching your program during dinner time it has taught me so much thankyou. Please, consider my request, Charlene

The Keys is a very magical place; however, remember that these islands are very tough terrain....and the only way to get between the islands is the massive bridge system...even if you fly into Marathon..you still must drive. Anyway my point to those of you who speak of the lack of open airy floor plan and not being accessable to the disabled ....is sadly the Keys don't often offer up to these challenges. I spent 6 months research where my family of 6+ extended family could stay...it was on Marathon....beautiful home...but most of the places you rent are not designed for large accomodations and it rented for over $5k for the week. This is a beautiful home that accomodates a lot of sleeping space...after all it is the keys and you would be a full not to take advantage of the awesome Fishing and Diving Experiences....This is beautiful and comfortable home...hats off to HGTV I believe they have delivered once again. By the way if you get the chance...you really must scuba dive at Louey Key.......it is spectacular! The best beach in the keys is Bahia Honda check that out too...not to far from Islamorada!

Confused? Can't sell the home. How could your average person pay the luxury taxes on winnings like this?

I got so excited when the new "dream home" location came out. Like so many others, we'd love to be there and live in that beautiful home. But, after dreaming of my family living there and experiencing all there is to do and entering the contest every day, reality has sunk in and now I think our dream couldn't be, even if we were blessed enough to win. As magical as it is and wonderful of HGTV to give away a home every year, this contest really isn't open to us all. We could not afford the income tax and taxes that go along with this home. I want to dream of winning this house just like everyone else, but this could turn into a nightmare.

All I can say is WOW!!! If we were to be the fortunate winners of this lovely home which is placed in the ideal location, we would move in ASAP. We love the ocean and sand. My lifelong dream has been to live on the ocean. Ironically, we live in the desert (not our choice). The 2008 is not only a "Dream Home" (and I do mean "Home") but also a "Dream Location"

I've literaly dreamed and pictured my family living in each of the HGTV Dream Homes since it first began, however, this year's colorful 3-story beauty is absolutely the most perfect one for my family. Jack Thomasson not only designed a magnificent architectual structure, but the location this year in Islamorada, Florida is simply gorgeous! In additon, Linda Woodrum's interior design theme is coordinated perfectly with the architecture and warm climate home. Congratulations HGTV on a job well done! Hopefully, it will my name selected this year as the winner of the HGTV Dream Home. My family would certainly enjoy a warm climate home away an entire life in Ohio.

I just love the home HGTV has built this year. I am hoping and praying that it will belong to me and my husband on March 16th. We both need something good in our lives. We are from NJ and have had medical problems since 1992. So a home in Florida would give us something to look forward too. And Brian, the open lots on either side of the "Dream House" Or should I say "MY Dream House"? are for seven other houses going to be built around and make a small community. Hope that helped you. Wish us luck as I wish luck to you all, Good Luck to all of us>

If I was lucky enough to be the winner of this years "Dream Home" I would be truly thankful for my blessings, however as a mother I was a bit shocked to see that the kids room is on the ground floor and the master suit is 2 flights up. Not to mention that the kids room has glass doors in it with access to the outside(not very safe). I tried to overlook it by saying I would just put my parents in that room instead and have the kids upstairs but my mom is handicap and there is no bathroom on the ground floor. There is no way in the middle of the night she could head upstairs to use the rest room. and it does have me baffled that they wouldn't think to put a bathroom on every floor in a million dollar home.
Not to mention that there are only 2 other bedrooms besides the master suit. This doesn't leave you with many options for small children and persons with special needs.
I think this years dream home is beautiful and being near the ocean would be a dream come true but it's just hard not to think of the "real life" needs of your family once you get there.
Good luck to you all!

As I watched the HGTV Dream Home tour this morning all I could think was this is not my dream home but my family's dream home. My husband is an avid fisherman and we have three boys. The "fishing room" has fly rods as well as spinning rods. HGTV thought of everything. Even a dog house for our golden retriever, Kelsey! We live in Chicago so what better place to have a dream home than in beautiful, sunny Islamorada for family and friends to visit.

I am curious, why does HGTV seem to only build 3 bedroom houses for the price (2.2mil). There is not enough room for my 4 kids in the layout. I would not put my young children on the 1st floor and have myself 2 floors up. The home seems designed for a family with grown children or none at all.
i'm hoping for the runner up prize. good luck to you all.....

O MY GOD! I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY! What else is there to say? What a dream that would be.... The closest I'll ever get to a place like that is the Sherwin Williams store down the street so I have that going for me! great colors huh?! haha

I love this year's dreamhome! And the view is like heaven! I would be grateful to win and would appreciate everything about this gorgeous home down to the smallest well thought out detail. My family and friends would enjoy it as much as I do and we would love spending our days experiencing this magnificent home, the extraordinary beach and ocean, the town and of course the beautiful sunsets. We would share many memories with family, friends and also our new neighbors who I'm sure would be as friendly and appreciative as us living in a little piece of paradise. This year's dreamhome is incredibly perfect!

I watch HGTV everyday and love most all the designs that are used and I have used some of the helpful projects in my own home. I love the dream home in the Keys of Florida and what a beautiful spot for a winter retreat. We who live in the northern states can understand what I mean. Whoever wins this home, enjoy it, and good luck to everyone who has entered.

People shouldn't enter to win if they cannot afford the approximately $600,000 to $700,000 in income tax that would be due. People forget about that minor detail - a prize winning is treated just like income. Property taxes are an additional annual expense along with whatever homeowner fees there are in the development - easily $3000 per month. Do not enter if you cannot afford it because it lowers everyone elses chances.

The site plan at http://www.theshoreislamorada.com/property.html is distressing, if not surprising. I expect the entire property will be developed from the back forward, with each house's view being spectacular ... until it's sold, and the next one is built. The last two should have truly great views.
The furnishings are seriously trite and dull - I'd expect more style than this in a rental condo. But, it appears that most posters here simply adore it (or perhaps they think that flattering posts will help thir odds!) I assume that impact-resistant glass explains the absence of window shutters, I don't think Monroe County would allow otherwise.
It is correct that this will come with a $600,000+ Federal income tax bill in 2009 (because prizes are income, and it alone will put the winner in a 36% tax bracket), and the property taxes and fees would be at least another $3,000 per month. There's also the cost of insuring this 'waterfront' home - separate flood and wind coverage in addition to regular homeowner's - figure another $1000+ per month.
With all that said, I do not expect anyone to refrain from entering as a result - Like (apparently all of) the previous winners, any winner can sell the prize and still come out ahead (the rule only says you can't opt for cash instead of the house).
But it is curious as a result - do we hope the winner is someone who can afford the taxes and fees to keep the house (and thus who could likely afford to buy their own dream house) or do we hope it goes to someone who could not afford to buy a dream house, thus someone we know must sell it rather than enjoy it? It makes for an odd contest.

Beautiful home and location, Keep up the great work HGTV.

I think the home is beautiful but I was a little disappointed that it seemed more like a vacation rental than an actual home. Did anyone else notice the small bed in the Master bedroom? With that much space upstairs for a master suite, you would think they would have planned more room for a King sized bed! :( It's a beautiful house though. Too bad its going to be crammed around by other houses soon.

Oh my!! I am dreaming and hoping my dream come true. I have never won anything boy, I sure wish I could win this one! I already have it planned out how I would enjoy such jewel with my friends and family and breath in the wonderful sea breeze. Can't wait!! Hopeful like everyone else.

I went to see the house on Saturday. The house is beautiful. It is built as a vacation home. There will be 7 additional homes built on this lot and the lost is not a large one at all. I also found out that the taxes that you would have to pay in order to move into the house and get the vehicle are $600,000. Yes, you read correctly. $600,000. If you decide to keep the house you would also have to pay association fees. They plan to build a pool and a marina with 8 boat slips - one for each home so I am sure that the association fees will be hefty. I guess that's why everyone has to end up selling the home when they win.

The home is Beautiful......I really hope that someone who is in need of a home win...That person would be me.......Keeping my fingers crossed and continue to pray for a miracle well deserved and needed.......Alisa ;-)

The day I win I will be hosting a party for all the doubters and crtics so that they can enjoy the beatiful scenery and ocean breezes. The design is typical Fla. keys the setting is great and if Ican only afford to stay there for one winter it would be well worth the effort of simply typing in my e-mail address. Go luck to all see you at my party.
P.S. bring your own chair and sunblock, my not have enough for everyone.

I discovered your beautiful Dream Home while watching my favorite show, HGTV. My husband and I take pleasure living our lives one day at a time.I just underwent breast cancer surgery in July, 2007. Hopefully, God will smile on me for several years of cancer-free living. My husband is also a cancer surviver and also underwent a kidney transplant a few years ago.Recently retired, we cannot afford to buy our Dream Home because our medical expenses are so high. To be able to go to the Keys and be surrounded by such a beautiful home and environment would be trully a Dream Home come true. This is a wonderful thing your organizaion is doing and I know the sponsors should be happy to help with this project. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to enter your contest. Here's hoping!
Thanks, Donna Mouser

Wonderful, spectacular. It's the most beautiful thing I could have imagined winning. Of course it will take nothing less than a miracle to win it. We are praying and claiming it every day. My wife has asthma and allergies very bad and when we go on vacation in Florida she is 100% better, so needless to say, this is why we would love owning it. Of course we will stay year-round unless a huricane is forcast then we would go northward till it is over. We can't wait to see our name as WINNER on TV.

This is such a major disater! This "Dream Home" could use some remodeling and new decor. The past homes have all had a real "wow" factor, but this is worse than some hotels and condos we have rented.

My son was an auto mechanic. On April 26, 2006, he had motorcycle accident right by my house. He shattered his C-5 and he was a quadriplegic. He also suffered a brain injury. I brought him home last February. I was his mother, friend and care taker. Those 9 months I had him home, I became very close to him. I loved every bit of it. He was my life. This past November my son past away at home. I am so lost without him. I really need to get out of this place, because it brings back so many memories. So I am, really looking foward to move on with my life, and just cherish the moments I had with him.

hi all, I was very excited to here that the HGTV DREAM HOME tour proceeds would go to the FLORIDA KEYS CHILDREN'S SHELTER. there are so many children that dream of a good home too.. Christmas two years ago i went and picked up an 8 month old baby boy that had been abused. I have an extended family now. when he turned 2 we decorated his room with Kidcraft's firetruck toddler bed and bookcase. i like to sew, so i made him curtains and sheets to match. Good night all and God Bless the FKCS with lots of visitors to the HGTV Dream Home.

Posted by kaitlyn – January 12, 2008 12:14 PM
to all of you who have so much bad to say about the house, PLEASE, don't enter. If you dislike it so much then why are you wasting your time posting negative crap on this website!!! Many of us would be grateful to win such a beautiful home regardless of the layout or the paint color, even the neighbors!!! Find another contest to enter that you approve of and let us normal people dream our dream!!

Amazing home in magical Islamorada! It was great touring it online. Good luck to all, who like me, are hoping and wishing for their own piece of heaven in the Keys!

I love reading your comments, however the concern of many is can we afford to win this home. How much are gift taxes, etc... If we win do we really win anything? A dream home is really nice home that we can afford to live in, if HGTV want to give something away as a prize then it should be a prize not a debt. I love HGTV and watch daily, but they really should communicate to us that love them a little better.
I love HGTV anyway, from-cautious in Ohio

Thankyou HGTV for my beautiful home. I love everything about it. If Carter wants to come vacation in the keys he is oh so more than welcomed to stay at my house. that goes for anyone else at hgtv. i don't drink margaritas but we can still have fun. i can't wait to drive my new suv around in the keys. you just don't know how excited i am. i'm not obsessed or anything; however, i own about 30 pairs of flip-flops. (don't tell "WHAT NOT TO WEAR").

i cant wait to make my family's dream come true...it would be a true blessing if we could all be together under one roof enjoying...love, laughter, peace and most important each other... may all our wishes come true... good luck to all...

Just a thought, wouldn't it be nice if somehow the property taxes could be prepaid for a few years so the winner could enjoy these homes instead of having to sell it immediately. Part of the fantasy of winning these places is to picture ourselves living in a house that nice, not just winning something worth a certain amount of money.

My husband is a fishing fanatic and although we live in nearby Miami our dream has always been to have property in the Keys where we could keep our small boat and fish til we drop! We looked at the property online with our 2 boys and all they could talk about was the fishing room where they could store all of the rods. This would be a dream come true for our family. Thye say positive thinking makes things happen so we are all imagining ourselves living in this beautiful dream home! look forward to meeting you all in February...
Ciao!

The decor and color scheme are boring, it looks like a hotel - very blah.

The last couple years we have been vacationg in the Keys. I would be great to have a home for the family to live in. One flies in from Seattle, Washington the other from Buffalo New York. This house would surely be a treat for the retireed Mom and Dad of an engineer and emergency room doctor and their wives.

I WOULD LOOK SO GOOD ON ANY ONE OF THOSE BALCONIES...Ha...WHO WOULDN'T? I am a South Florida transplant (now in central Florida) who grew up taking day trips to the keys. I can't tell you how many homes I pointed at and wished they were mine. This one tops the list. I love everything about it. I dream of retiring and living by the ocean. I have looked at properties on all of Floridas beach coasts and sadly the only way I will have my dream home is to WIN it. Would the rest of you please stop entering:) I NEED TO WIN and share this great home with family and friends for years to come. I have loved all of the HGTV Dream Homes, but this one is exactly what I have dreamed of. WOW! Someone is going to be Very lucky!

I love this house! I want this house!
If you have $700,000.00 in the bank for Federal income tax and make enough money every year to pay $20,000.00 plus in property tax, insurance, dues, ect. than you might be able to accept this gift.

I, too, expect to win! But there are saddening issues of being able to afford to keep it and enjoy it. The taxes and fees would be prohibitive. Couldn't the sponsors ensure a year or two of all expenses paid so the winner can enjoy the dream?
Posted by Patricia – January 17, 2008 2:21 PM
It is disappointing to think that most of us that hope to win can't afford to keep the home. I live in Miami, and although we do not have state taxes, our property taxes are outrageous. Someone estimated that the taxes would be around $15,000, think again! My taxes are almost $10k and my house was only $500,000.
I still want to win it. I'd sell it and build my own dream home.

This house is wonderful!!!! It is definitley my family's dream house!!! We had always dreamed of having a beutiful house on a beach and we've been to the keys so many times and it is so great and peaceful!!!! This house is incredible!!
Posted by taina – January 17, 2008 11:08 PM
Of course beautiful house, great place. But I am disappointed in the floorplan. Only 3 bedrooms. And the kids bedroom in the first floor!!!! Crazy!! What were they thinking!!! Its a great home for a couple with an older child or parent, but definitely not for a family of 4 or 5. And I dont see an office room, everyone now has a computer and an area where they work on their computer or bills. Also who would have such an exclusive home in such an exclusive place with NO POOL and the Hottub, hello its Florida, every other home has a pool. yes you have the ocean, but its not really to swim in it. I think who ever designed it did not have have much experience in Florida homes, expecially in an island.
I would love to see HGTV build a 5 bedroom home with a pool, large kitchen, 3 car garage, 4 bathrooms and a huge family room. I bet you will have a lot more entries. Catering more to families and their real lifestyles. How great would that house be in North Carolina!!
Maybe they would like to hire me to help with the design concept!! just kidding. Don't mean to be a grouch, but I am a mom with 3 small kids and know what a family would really like.
