We're going green! Next year in addition to the HGTV Dream Home 2008 in Florida you'll be able to enter the very first HGTV "Green" Home Giveaway for a chance to win a custom-built, fully-furnished home! The home will be built using eco-friendly materials, energy-saving appliances and natural textiles. Keep checking HGTV.com for more news on the Green Home including location, timing for the giveaway, an online home tour...the works!
In the meantime, stay right here for more news on the HGTV Dream Home Giveaway 2008, which begins on Jan. 1, 2008. As you know, the next HGTV Dream Home is being built now in Islamorada, Fla. That means next year you'll have TWO giveaways to enter for a chance to win a home.
And there's going to be a lot more green in HGTV's programming lineup in the near future, too:
Red, Hot and Green is a one-hour special devoted to "green" design, featuring craftsman and green enthusiast Carter Oosterhouse and "eco-stylist" Danny Seo. It premieres on HGTV Sunday, June 10 at 9pm e/p, and we will also have tons of content from the special on HGTV.com starting in late May.
And Ed Begley, Jr. along with wife Rachelle Carson Begley are back with a second season of HGTV's critically-acclaimed series Living with Ed. The Emmy-nominated actor and passionate environmentalist will be back in all-new episodes starting Sunday, Aug. 26 at 10pm e/p, immediately following HGTV Design Star.

Great News-Thanks for the information, can not wait.
Posted by Janice – April 5, 2007 6:12 PM
well, per my comments on the previous blog post, I never thought there was enough interest in the 'green' housing market to warrant a environmental friendly themed giveaway. Apparently I was wrong.
Obviously the Dream Home giveaway is a very successful venture and HGTV is trying to expand it. Good for them, and good for us.. we get a second giveaway. I hope Joan will be involved in this one away too.

Better build it high & dry with global warming, unusal weather patterns, and rising oceans water within the next century!!! Otherwise, it will be the first ocean floor dream home.

How about building a dream home on the rocky coast of Maine? It's wicked good!
Posted by Christine – April 5, 2007 7:51 PM
Way to go HGTV!! I'm not a "passionate" enviromentalist per say, but I'm working on it. A 'green' home would absolutely be my Dream Home. Thanks for keeping the enviroment's (and I suspect your viewers') interest in mind.

Cant wait till the next contest.I really could use a new home with the disabilities my wife and I have. A nice Ranch home

Ahh but Mike P, not only good for us(viewers) and good for them(HGTV)...a green house is good for Mother Earth.
Great job HGTV! Hopefully this venture will create an increased awareness of going green, green products we can all incorporate into our own lives and homes, and info the companies that provide those products.
I hope they get Ed Begley, Jr involved somehow...it just seems like a great match.
Can't wait for more info!

Now yer Talking!
I am more excited about the Green Home than the Dream Home! Way to step up HGTV!

Now that the HGTV Dream Home is going to be in Florida, did anyone think of the cost for insurance? My 2100 sq. ft house went from $740 to $1400 and my sister who lives in Melbourne near the coast (not on it) her insurance went from around $1000 to $8000 just in the last few months.
Posted by Wanda – April 5, 2007 9:13 PM
Way to go!!! And may I suggest a little something along the lines of Hybrid or Alternate Fuels in the garage...

See people don't make up these blogs after all!!! "Red, White and Green" is advertised on TVTimes site as I seen it almost 1 1/2 weeks ago now. It states June 2008 for the giveaway in addition to the Annual HGTV Dream Home. The TV show will show the house in progress. Wow, now another Green show on top of that too! HGTV ROCKS...(Sorry Sandra, but the "Red Hot & Green" television special premiering on June 10 has nothing to do with the HGTV "Green" Home Giveaway that's coming in 2008. FC)
Posted by Sandra – April 5, 2007 10:16 PM
Just the thought of having a "green" home and already being an organic veggy person! How wonderful that would be!!!
Posted by Catherine – April 6, 2007 12:47 AM
Thank you.
Have been asking for this ever since even before the Dream Home Message Board started, then on it, & then on the Environmental MB.
This is truly exciting.
Now, is this the start of your build-up to where the Green Home will be?

I enjoyed watching Ed Begley and Rachelle's interactions last year. I'm looking forward to catching more new info on a green home next year on the program. I must say I wouldn't mind winning a "green home" too.

Happy there is two homes to look at and enter for.

Fcole: Thank you so very much for this posting as I have seen the article on "Red, White and Green" a few weeks ago and it seems alot of doubters out there unless information is from you, at the top. I am anxiously waiting for the show to begin. My husband says, another reason to never change the channel from HGTV. Keep up the GREAT work.
Posted by Sandra – April 6, 2007 9:48 AM
Fcole,
What is the "Red, Hot and Green"? I haven't heard of that one yet. I only thought HGTV was doing the Green home giveaway in June 2008? Along with the Annual Dream Home, of course. Too many shows with close names and almost the same plot. I am an HGTV fan, I will stick with your shows. Thank you for the personal message, that's pretty cool.
Posted by Sandra – April 6, 2007 9:54 AM
How cool is HGTV! I can't wait! Love watching Green shows and I am trying to incorporate ideas into my life. I just wish it was a less expensive change for the major items. Well maybe I will win the Green home and the money will not be a factor!!!
Posted by carolyn – April 6, 2007 10:03 AM
Green home ... What a great giveaway. And what would be better than a Hybrid a fully electric sports car - Tesla Roadster http://www.teslamotors.com . It would be great if the Green Dream Home had Composting or Vermicomposting. I been looking into composting in the small back yard I have and it looks like worms might be great (http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/Organics/Worms/)
Living in CA.

Kudos!!! to HGTV is just keeps getting better, I'm really looking forward to your new shows and to hear more about the new home.
Posted by Berta – April 6, 2007 11:16 AM
Yea!!!, Mother Earth will be pleased. Now if we can keep building green homes, end our need for oil, and start prosecuting more heavily on polluters, maybe we might just save this planet and ourselves. I get so aggravated at people just trashing our home ( earth ), that I want to scream. God Bless Al Gore for his movie, and HGTV for this home. It's a start, a wonderful start. Green is Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by cindy – April 6, 2007 12:18 PM
That is too cool. I am really excited about the green home. It will be interesting to see where it is and what it has, and how they do it. I have to admit that I am still partial to the Islamorada home though. It is still my dream. Both I am sure will be spectacular and I can't wait to see them and have a chance to win either of them. I am addicted to HGTV!!!! And, I am working on getting my hubby in to it as well. He is as excited about the DH08 as I am. Thanks HGTV. It just keeps getting better all the time.

GREEN GREEN GREEN GO HGTV THANKS HGTV GREEN IS MY FAVORITE COLOR (HA hA) AND GREEN LIVING IS A NICE WAY TO BUILD AND EDUCATE OTHERS ABOUT CHANGING BAD HABITS. YOU SAID IT WAS CUSTOM BUILT DOES THAT MEAN THE WINNER WILL BE INVOLVED IN THE DECISIONS AND BE EDUCATED ALONG THE WAY. I LIKE THIS IDEA AND IT INTERESTS ME. I'M THINKING GREENER EVERYDAY. PEOPLE REALLY DO NEED TO START CONSIDERING OUR EARTHLY RESOURCES AND RECYCLE MORE. PEOPLE SHOULD REMEMBER AND RESPECT WHAT GOD GIVETH (CREATED) YOU KNOW THE EARTH, HE(GOD) CAN TAKE IT BACK. MOST PEOPLE:DO NOT APPRECIATE WHAT THEY HAVE: LIKE THIS BEAUTIFUL EARTH THAT GOD CREATED FOR US ALL. HOW DO PEOPLE EXPECT TO GET BLESSED WHEN THEY DON'T CARE TO TAKE CARE OF PEOPLE /ANIMALS OR THEIR ENVIRONMENTS.
I LIKE THE ED SHOW IT'S FUNNY AND EDUCATIONAL HIS WIFE THINKS LIKE MOST PEOPLE IT COULD BE EMBARRASING AT TIMES AND TRUTHFULLY I WOULD HAVE FOUGHT AGAINST THE UGLY RAIN BARRELS TOO, I LOVED IT WHEN SHE REMOVED THEM AND CUT THE GUTTER HERSELF AND PUT IT BACK. I THINK ED SHOULD TRY TO MAKE IT UP TO HER AND BUY HER SOME PRETTY BIG PLANTING POTS AND PUT A DRAIN SPOUT PLUG ON IT FOR HIM TO RECYCLE THE WATER AND SCREENING ON TOP WITH GARDEN PEBBLES . AND A COPPER CHAIN FOR THE WATER TO DRIP DOWN THIS WOULD PROTECT KIDS/ANIMALS FROM DROWNING. I'M WITH HER YOU CAN DO THOSE THINGS A LITTLE BIT MORE PLEASING TO THE EYE AND MORE PEOPLE WOULD BE MORE INTERESTED. I COULD TOTALLY SEE MY HUSBAND TINKERING ON THE GREEN STUFF LIKE SOLAR PANELS AND BATTERIES. HE COULD TOTALLY HANDLE THAT HE LIKES TO REBUILD MOTORS ON EVERYTHING. AND ENJOY IT.
I'M SO EXCITED TWO HOMES NEXT YEAR. I DIDN'T MISUNDERSTAND THAT DID I? WOW -O- WOW. AND A SHOW WITH CARTER O. O HOW NICE! I WATCHED HIM ON TRADING SPACES. LOVE HIM, HE SEEMS VERY SWEET, AND SMART AND TALENTED, THIS IS A TRUE STORY ABOUT CARTER, BEFORE MY HUSBAND AND I DECIDED TO HAVE MORE KIDS. I DECIDED AND DEMANDED IF I HAD A BOY IT WOULD BE NAMED CARTER. BECAUSE HE'S SO CUTE! AND BECAUSE HE'S A CARPENTER AND SO IS MY HUSBAND! I THOUGHT THE NAME WOULD FIT A SON FOR US ... AND GUESS WHAT IT DOES...

Hooray for HGTV! I love it! Is the green home going to have it's own blog or will you be titillating us on this blog with clues to the location of the new Green Home? fcole, you know we are game. Can't wait for 2008 now, but the fun of watching the Islamorada home being built is wonderful, so I'll savor every moment. I love all the new shows on HGTV and I'm so glad Ed and Rachel will be back with a new season...thanks for all the great info fcole. Kathy in Baton Rouge

It's too bad that California is out of the running because there is a beautiful little town in Nothern CA that would of been the perfect spot for the Dream Home......."Trinidad, CA" is absoutely breathtaking. It's called "The Emerald Forest". With the majestic Redwoods at it's back and the mighty Pacific Ocean as it's front door. The fishing and hunting is wonderful. But like I said, it's too bad.

i watched a show last year i thought on hgtv. where they were showing homes and how they were enviromently friendly. examples being. solar panals and collecting rain for flushing and watering plants as well as recyclling tires for retaining walls.
not that i think those are "green" type of house, but i hope that features like those are used in order to make the home as eco friendly as possible. it will also be nice to have that info out there for the large groups to see how they too could make small changes to homes pre-existing and those to be built, that would make a diffrence. i hope that they provide lots of links to products used.
can you pass that along to the ones in charge.. give us lots of links so that we too can help with the "green" team.

I would like to see a future HGTV Dream House built on Mount Desert Island, Maine. This island is one of the most beautiful places in North America where mountains meet the sea. And Maine is the "Way Life Should Be."

Great idea!! I think that a "green home" contest is exciting! But, I will stay reserved until the "green home" location is revealed.

Yes, Virginia, there realy is a Santa Claus, and his name is HGTV and he is wearing GREEN. Mother Earth will be so grateful, and so will I and many, many others. Thanks fcole! Please keep us updated on both of these homes being built for 2008. Are you going to give us clues as to the location of the Green Home? And will you please let us see at least one floor plan of the home on Islamorada. HGTV, you are the GREATEST! Thanks!

How about bringing the Dream Home to New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment? Average year round temps in the 70's for most of the state and the most beautiful sunsets in the world! We have it all, mountains, deserts, plains, and 360 days of sunshine!

This great! We need to get away from anything that is totally dependant on oil companies and keep our air as clean as possible. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

The green home is in Virginia... (The special anouncement at top says Yes, Virginia... ) right....which part of virginia? Mountain or ocean? You guys who don't like the cold weather Virginia is probably not for you.. I live in KY, VA climate is similar to us most of the time. You never know what you are getting weather wise from day to day. One day you are hot wearing shorts with the air on, rain, thunderstorms dodging tornado warnings and the next day you are back in your coats with the heat on watching the snow flurries. Big climate swings especially in fall and in spring.
But it is a beautiful state. And surprising from day to day. That's what I love about KY. Now VA is my neighboring state. Blue ridge mountains to ocean view.. great pick hgtv.
Are you gonna build it with hay and stuccod walls? Or with recycled barn timbers and floors? Use old rock, brick, and even glass recycled tiles. You could use flea market finds like wood furnitures and paint/stain it with earth friendly paints, stains or dyes. You can use antique/flea market accessories. It would be great to re-use things that are in great shape but sitting around collecting dust by recycling the good stuff. This could help our environments and these items in waiting could be used and not junking up places and spaces. I always liked the old saying " one man's junk is another's treasure." We all love a good bargain. And we all love creativity in the way things can be reused. Then you could splurge in the budget on the natural materials for curtains and blankets and best environmentally friendly appliances and air and heating units and water saving plumbing for tubs, showers and toilets. Because we all still want air conditioning and heat. It gets hot. Solar power would be nice. I'm not sure about self composting toilets unless someone is willing and into making their on fertilizer. I'm sure the local sewer plants retreat and recycle water somehow. Catching rain water with decorative rain catchers(ed) for watering plants and washing vehicles I do see. Maybe have a sistern for that. Have a small green house or raised garden/ flower beds in interesting landscaping shapes. So people can grow some of their own veggies and fruits and it would be easy on backs and more appealing to adults and children to keep up with it and handicapped people could reach in to them from their chairs as well. Is Carter and Ed teaming up on this one? How fun would that be! Ed seems so nice and down to earth I'm sure he would even try to teach anyone how to use the solar power. IF people don't know how to use it. Any way I'm very excited and hope to see the building of this home and be educated for a better future for my kids and my future grand babies and yours. Don't forget the new hybrid vehicles. There are some really nice ones out now. Thanks hgtv and ed and other earth friendlies for caring about our earth. Hopefully people will change for the better. And start taking care of themselves and our world and others.

WOW! To think someone could win both homes in the same year. I somehow doubt that will be allowed, there will probably be something in the rules that if you win one you will not be eligible for the other, but who knows. I think the fact there will be two BIG winners in a one years time is awesome. Can't wait to find out where the Green home will be. HAPPY EASTER HGTV AND FANS.

The perfect place to build a Virginia Dream Home is at the crest of the Blueridge Mountains where I-77 passes through, Fancy Gap, VA., it also intersects with the Blueridge Parkway here. There you can find 80 mile views of the North Carolina piedmont, Pilot Mountain rising in the distance, the lights of Winston Salem, some 50 miles in the distance. This beautiful location already boasts some extraordinary homes in some unreal locations. Great food, great mountain music at the nearby Mountain Music Amphitheatre and Interpretive Center at Fishers Peak on the Parkway. What better place to live and to showcase with one of your outstanding homes.

Art V, yes, people need to be aware of that as well....
Green is great for environment...all for that...

FCOLE, Please clear up the idea some bloggers have that the "Yes, Virginia" meant that the Green Home will be built there. As I previously posted, I think the phrase was referring to a Santa quote. Obviously, some people have never heard "Yes, Virginia, there wealy is a Santa Claus". So I don't think the location of the Green Home has been revealed yet. Of course I could be entirely wrong, and will stand corrected gracefully. PLEASE clear this up, fcole. Thanks

Green is good, Florida? well I guess thats ok! I hope it will be able to stand up to a force 5 hurricane. thats why is should be a elevated Concrete geodesic dome. There is a company out there that makes them.

Just food for thought!

Alabama here----fcole--I think a "green" enviromentally built home is really clever. I love the color Sage, just not on the frig or stove! HA! Just remember that some of us have blonde hair, be aware, as the interior decor will reflect on our hair!HA! But if I should win, look out world "Green Hair It Is." dee
Posted by Dee – April 7, 2007 8:07 PM
I agree Chris W about the geodesic dome for the weather conditions...also the concrete and high on stilts in case the ice melts too fast and the ocean rises 20 feet (hopefully not all at once)....just being aware what's going on globally.....and why are these homes built in the areas where there are more serious concerns as this?.....hopefully Virginia will be more protected by the elements...Green will be great since the awareness towards environmental issues, wildlife, conservation needs to be addressed as well as "hybrid" cars for cleaner air......and the need for "less oil"....Happy Easter everyone....
Posted by ey – April 7, 2007 10:04 PM
You could be right Katydid, maybe its not Virginia....not sure but we will find out eventually....
Green would be great if we used "mud" brick, like a adobe style, great for cooler in summer and warmer in winter.....its an old art for many centuries and bring this to our modern day tech with ways to utilize our water for recycling, our vegetable crops and fruits, solar for sun and save on electricity...a stone/cement structure would work also with softening of our modern building with wood and insulated filtered glass for heat reduction...This would be great to build in New Mexico, Arizona, Southern California, S. Nevada..Maybe the next home ....And many structures like these have been in some of the hottest areas and people stayed cool...some things from our past might be helpful when looking into "green".....food for thought....also places like Sweden have already incorporated the "green" for some time now...which is not always the hottest area but could work well in most climates.....food for thought....

Every year I like many others enter the dream house giveaway. I haven't won yet, because I wasn't ment to live in those places, This my be my year with 2 chances, one of these might be the right fit. Waiting for more updates....Linda
Posted by Linda – April 8, 2007 8:56 AM
It's nice you're doing two homes but what's wrong with building something that encompasses disabilities and the winner can afford to keep it? How many of your dream homes have been kept by the winners and not sold to pay the taxes? Why not build more than two homes, say for $350-500K, that would include allowances for disabilities and the winners could afford to keep and live in them?
Posted by Barb – April 8, 2007 9:00 AM
I agree with BARB, affordability & acessability should be a key factor in building a dream home that can really be enjoyed by the winner. For 500K, I think you could build a remarkable home, I sure would love to win and be able to keep and own. I realize HGTV wants to go over the top with it's giveaways, and they can still do that! I wish everyone a Happy EASTER, may God's love be with us all.
Posted by southerncharm – April 8, 2007 11:24 AM
It is great to have a house that one can ohh and awwh over but I think it is ostentatious to continually try to top the last Dream Home. Why not build a home that is smaller in scale, affordable to keep, as well heat and cool and maintain? I think the Green Home concept is more on target.
Posted by sandyb. – April 8, 2007 11:56 AM
To Barb, Apr. 8....you can still keep the home....you can always rent out as a vacation spot if allowed in the community....a bed and breakfast idea would be nice....a part time/or full time place to live or share with another to rent out, maybe more than one other person/persons......perhaps share with others who have disabilities as well....these homes have alot of space.....Happy Easter.
Posted by Anonymous – April 8, 2007 1:52 PM
Yeah, the "Green" in Ever-"green" state of Washington.....hope to see you soon...Many people would agree this would be a perfect place for this type of home....

well it's breath taking i can only imagine having something so beautifull..living in the canadian section we can only experience that on a vacation, but with 5 children it does not happen offen. It would be a dream come true but at the same time affordability is what i look for. Wouldn't it be nice if us canadians could have the contest, then maybe our dreams could come true. It is a great site and who ever wins well enjoy!!!

HELLO, I JUST HAD TO TELL YOU THAT MY VERY, VERY, FAV COLOR IS GREEN, ANY GREEN, AND MY FAV PLACE IS THE FLORIDA KEYS. (HOWEVER, I COULD DO WOITHOUT THE SCORPIONS). HAHA.. WE USED TO GO DOWN THERE ALMOST EVERY YEAR. FLY INTO FT. LAUDERDALE, RENT A VAN, THEN DRIVE DOWN TO ONE OF THE ISLANDS, STAY IN A RENTED HOUSE ON THE BEACH OR AN INLET, RENT A GREAT BOAT, AND SCUBA DIVE AND SNORKLE FOR A WEEK. WE WOULD ALWAYS DRIVE DOWN TO KEY WEST TOO FOR JUST SOME GOOD FOOD AND EXCITEMENT. ALSO, SOME GOOD SCUBA DIVING DOWN THERE. WE ALWAYS LET A CERTIFIED GROUP TAKE US OUT DOWN THERE THO. WE HAVE TONS AND TONS OF GREAT STORIES FROM ALL OF OUR TRIPS. MY COUSIN AND HIS WIFE ALWAYS WENT WITH US, AND WE ALWAYS HAD A WONDERFUL TIME. ONCE HOWEVER, IT WAS VERY, VERY, HOT WITH NOOOOOOOOO BREEZE, AND I HONESTLY THOUGHT I MIGHT DIE AT ANY MINUTE. HAHA. ( AND I WAS ONLY IN MY 40'S CLEAR BACK THEN). WHAT A BIG BABY.. THE FIRST TIME WE EVER WENT DOWN THERE WE STAYED AT THE MOST QUAINT LITTLE PLACE IN KEY WEST CALLED CORTNEY'S PLACE. IT WAS THE BEST WITH CATS ALL OVER THE PLACE. WE LOVED IT. OUR LITTLE VILLA WAS SMALL, AND THE AIR DIDN'T WORK REAL WELL BUT, WE WOULD JUST GO OUT AND JUMP IN THIS TINY LITTLE KIDNEY SHAPED POOL. IT WAS THE SWEETEST POOL EVER. WE WOULD STAY OUT THERE EVERY NIGHT WITH OTHER PEOPLE WE HAD MET THERE, AND CERTAINLY ENJOYED ALL OF OUR TIME THERE. WE EVEN MADE GOOD FRIENDS WITH A COUPLE FROM GERMANY WITH A NEW LITTLE GUY ABOUT 8 MONTHS OLD. WE HAD SO MUCH FUN WITH THEM. SO, I JUST WANTED TO TELL YOU SOME OF OUR EXPERIENCES DOWN IN THE KEYS. I BELIEVE WE HAVE STAYED ON 3 DIFFERENT ISLANDS, AND MY COUSIN AND HIS WIFE WENT WITHOUT US ONCE ( HOW DARE THEY ), AND THEY STAYED AT A COUPLE MORE ISLANDS THAT WE HAVE STAYED AT. WE DO INTEND TO GET THERE SOMETIME IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS. WE ARE ALL A BIT TO OLD AND OUT OF SHAPE FOR SCUBA ANYMORE BUT, WE CAN STILL SNORKLE ALL DAY LONG IF WE WANT. SINCERELY, THE MILLERS ROB AND LINDA PS. TODAY IS EASTER AND WE, HERE IN OHIO HAD ALMOST 6" OF SNOW. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HI EVERYONE IF MY POST IS ON HERE MORE THAN ONCE I'M SO SORRY I'M HAVING INTERNET (BUSY) PROBLEMS IT WON'T STAY CONNECTED LONG ENOUGH TO POST. I'VE TYPED TWICE ALREADY AND LOST IT I'M THINKING.
ANYWAY
KATYDID, I think you could be right. I reread the special announcement above and it does say in the first paragraph to keep checking back at HGTV.com for location, give away timing, tour and the works. Out of excitement the other day I missed that word location when reading it the first time. I'm thinking Santa really is real with the announcement of the 2nd dream HOme giveaway. And your questioning this location makes me think and question the age old question is Santa (HOme location) real or not? And what color clothes do elves wear anyway people? (THAT'S RIGHT, "GREEN") Ha ha! ho ho! The magical announcement had me thinking VA! I love the thoughts of it being in VA: Santa would probably would have snow to land his sleigh @ Christmas in that beautiful country. But until you Katydid mentioned this UR smart honey. I didn't question it. But I do think you are right. It's probably not there.... P-A-T-( )-E-NCE I (MISSING) Cause I AIN'T GOT ANY......
NOW FCOLE: HINT, HINT, WINK, WINK, IS THE MAGICAL GAME OF GUESSING WHERE'S MY DREAMY PRESENT ON? WE ALL LOVE THE HGTV GUESSING GAME, IT'S FUN LIKE CHRISTMAS SO COULD YOU? WOULD YOU? PLEASE!!!!!!! BRING IT ON! LET US KNOW

Fcole.......commmenting on another I read that building more homes more affordable would be more in line with what people want out there.....also there would be more give-away's instead of one person....What do the blogger's think??? And what does HGTV think???

I can't wait for the homes to get underway. I simply love HGTV. I get so inspired watching the programs. Glad I'll have two chances to try and win. Who knows. It just might be my turn. I think in my next life I might be a builder. Smile.

Way to go, HGTV! I'm glad to hear that HGTV is going green next year. That is excellent! And I'm excited that it's going to be in my home state of Florida. Woo Hoo!

Green is great, and we love it trimmed with some blue and lots of yellow sunshine on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Think of us when planning the next "green" house. Don't forget older and disabled people; they may be your winner, or may be one of the visitors to the new "green" home of the future. We just love HGTV down here. You make life interesting and fun.

Va. Wow, that is where I am from. It is so
beautiful there. I live in NC now but I can't wait to retire and move back to VA. We have given
so much to our kids that we never got a home quite paid for and it would be wonderful to retire in a new "green" home in VA. Congrads to
the past winners and thank you HGTV for the great
programming. Your stations are all we watch besides national and local news. We love you
HGTV and we learn so much. Thank you very much.

To Christine above - HGTV already did a dream house in Maine 6 or so years ago... what are you - a rookie?
Posted by Anonymous – April 9, 2007 10:33 PM
May I suggest a possible change in the 2009 Dream Home? Building a humongus home with more "bells and whistles" than most people can afford, even with giving the winner $250,000, a new SUV etc, is outside the financial capability of most people to continue paying for.
Would it not be more interesting to award a winner the option to have their dream house built to their specifications/needs and give them the balance in an annuity or bond, then, throughout the year, to show the dream house being designed and built for the winner?
Not everyone wants or needs a home that sleeps 11 or 12 people and has a wine cellar, etc.
Please be more practical in the designing and constructing of these extravagant homes. It is nice to think about living in the lap of luxury, but most people cannot afford to live in such extreme luxury like millionaires or Hollywood celebrities.
Please think about what I have said.

Posted by connie carrera – April 10, 2007 9:41 AM
I agree with Mark. How about those clues?????? Some don't seem to fit a Florida home.
Is the green home going to be in VA? People seem to think so.That would be great as long as it is in a beautiful place, away from the crowds! How about the Shenandoah Valley????
Posted by roseanne VA – April 10, 2007 10:27 AM
Becky E, Apr. 8th, has got a point...most cannot afford to live like that, at least for too long....practicality should play a bigger role and lets all get more "down to earth" so to speak..something to ponder in the future building of homes or let the winner pick something more suitable to their needs...and the annuity would be a great idea and live better..what about it HGTV?......................going green is good tho.....hope u all had a good easter......

Hey Everyone,
I've enjoyed hearing different perspectives about the 2008 dream home on this site. I must say, however, that it is downright depressing that so many people think that they would not be able to afford hazard insurance or other expenses that are part of home ownership. Keep in mind that you will be sitting on an asset that will be valued at over 2 million dollars!
When people expect hgtv to act as some type of Welfare agency to protect the winner against any future challenge or expense the winner might experience it is really disappointing. From my perspective, hgtv does a great job of inspiring me to dream big and to learn about how a fantastic home can be designed and built in various environments. I find it amazing how they build a home in the mountains or how they will build it on the sandy soil in the Keys! I don't expect to win the home but if I do, I will be soooo pleasantly surprised and thankful to the hgtv people. Thanks for listening.

Hey, nice to hear it will be green. Hope to see alittle blue there also. My mom's favorite color was green so I hope she will be albe to see it from heaven, I am from Virginia so I would love to go back there. Good luck .

With the new home in Virginia, I hope that both Jack Thomassen and Linda Woodroom are involved because they do such a wonderful job together.

I hope the Florida's House is going to be tsunamy resistent and totally insuranced for that. Now-a-days the sea is getting a bit crazier than ever and you cannot prevent a thing! You never now where it is going nuts.
But the GREEN VIRGINIA HOUSE!!! I AM ALL INTO IT! THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE GREAT IDEA OF BEING TOTALLY GREEN! THAT IS MY DREAM HOUSE PER SURE!!! I JUST WISH IT COULD HAVE JUST ONE FLOOR WITH VERY, VERY HIGH CEILINGS! A LOT OF WINDOW-WALL-LOW MODERN STYLE SEATINGS!!! AND MY SPECIAL FEATURE IN THE CENTER OF THE FLOORPLAN: MY SMALL EXERCISE WAVE LIKE POOL SURROUNDED BY A GARDEN IN JAPANESE STYLE. I HAVE MY FLOOR PLAN, I DON'T KNOW HOW TO SHOW IT TO YOU. TO HAVE A HOUSE LIKE THE ONE I ALWAYS DREAMED WITH AND TOTALLY GREEN - IT WOULD BE LIKE HAVING WON THE LOTTERY PRIZE!!!
PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW I COULD SHOW YOU MY FLOORPLAIN, IT IS A VERY SIMPLE ONE THAT FULLFILLS MY HEART 100%. LOVE YOU ALL. GOOD LUCK BLOGGER WINNER!!! SNIFF... SNIFF... FOR ME IF I DON'T WIN IT BUT A LOT OF HAPPINESS TO THE BLOGGER LUCKER!!! ElianeDB of DC.

Green is wonderful. What I would like to see is a modest home built on one level with pocket doors and handicap accessability. While most of us are active now, something in the future can keep us from using stairs.
Posted by Donna Randall – April 10, 2007 6:28 PM
Awsome, but c'mon guys, you have to make it a REAL home with the typical American cars... A big SUV for trips and a car for around town? Just green! A Ford Escape Hybrid and a Toyota Prius Hybrid, right?!?! THAT, would be a REAL Green Dream Home!
Posted by Andy – April 10, 2007 7:26 PM
Hey Mark and roseanne VA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ATTENTION ALL PEOPLE INTERESTED IN KNOWING WHAT CLUES ADD UP TO THE LOCATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I clicked on the website to Islamadora and it said its the sportfishing capitol of the world! (I said before on one of the last few entries)That comes from the clue talking about the fishing equipment needed.
Of course everyone knows the clue about the fireplace feature is true. No one needs a fireplace in the Florida Keys.
Posted by lou – April 10, 2007 7:36 PM
DID I MISS SOMETHING??? When was it said the Green Home would be built in Virginia? Did they say they were doing clues to the Green Home? "Yes, Virginia, there will be a Green Home" that statement is from the old, "Yes, Virginia, there really is a Santa Claus." I'm thinking that is what they meant as in Yes, you can beleive it, not that it is in Virginia. Please Fcole/HGTV help up out. Thank you for all you wonderful, wonderful work, ideas and giving us our Dreams!

WOW!!! Great article from the Keys News. It also stated the HGTV Dream Home, called the ALlbright after the fisherman, would be a 3 (three) bedroom, 3 1/2 (three and one-half) bath home, in an 8 (eight) unit complex. HGTV's home will be the one more toward the back but the view would be un-obstructed. Also great that it stated how J. Thomasson was a bit leary at first due to the hurricane's until he went on a boat ride and captured the DREAM. Can't wait!!!

Will this "green" home have a compactor for composting our trash and turn it into bits for the organic "green" gardening in the new (smaller) "green" house and for our vegetable gardening????......Also barrels to catch "rain" water for our plants?..to save on water...Is this home going to save on wood to not cut down our beautiful forests??? And use other means of construction??...Will it have solar panels to save on electricity?..Will it have "filtered" glass windows to keep it cooler in summer? Will there be a "hepa" bacterial free, built-in vacuum system that is noise-less? What about Air-filtration systems for anyone who could be asmatic?...Will it have energy saving appliances and washer/dryers???........Will there be "live" plants in a terrarium for more oxygen in the home??? Not sure what "green" means to some people but maybe this might help everyone think about it.....Love to see a "green" home in New Mexico or Washington...and very different environments....

A "green" home needs to be made out of all recycled materials to save on costs.....
Posted by leon – April 11, 2007 11:52 AM
I love the dream home giveaway! I just wish I could enter. You have sooo many vendors for the Dream Home, one big one being General Motors, which excludes its employees and any relatives of that employee from entering the contest. Same for all the other big companies that are providing materials for this event. How about shaking things up a bit and maybe giveaway a Chrysler or Ford product in 2008(not that we don't like you advertising GM), and use some different suppliers, so I, and others can have a chance to win.

With the cost of everything going up in price.
It was a very good idea to have a home that is
more energy sufficient, I compliment the green
team for this home. And having it good for the environment is also a great plus. There should be more homes like this one, you are building, I know it will look beautiful as all your homes do.

fcole, haven't heard from you in a while. For all of us that are so excited about a Green Home, we are waiting for your promise of "more news on the GH, including location, timing for the giveaway and an online home tour - the works!" Not that we expect this all at once, but a little bit of information would be so appreciated. HGTV is doing this country such a service with the wonderful programing promoting the Green Home idea. Especially for the people who are a in a position to build a new home. For those of us who aren't, winning this home would truly be a dream come true. Thanks HGTV.

Location sounds like a continual vacation place. Having lived in Ft. Lauderdale and fished the FL Bay out of Flamingo, I like that location. But, I wonder about insurance--storm, hurricane, flood--whatever term you use. Of course, I would love to win.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GREEEEEEEEEEEEN! Awesome! I can't wait to see it! I love green, I love the idea of eco-friendly and I have to use 2 recycle bins every week for garbage pick up because we recycle so much. My regular garbage can is usually only half full. I have taught my children to do the same and now it just comes naturally to recycle.
Way to go HGTV!!!!

I also think going green is good. Green is a calming color, and my favorite. My husband used to work at the Islamorada, and we lived in Marathon for awhile. The bloger from Florida is right about the insurance going up so high. We are thinking of moving out.

I think I mixed up Old Dominion and the Old line state. Anyway, living at the point where Virgina(Old Dominion), Maryland(Old Line State), and West Virginia(Wild and Wonderful)meet, at the point where the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers meet is one of the loveliest places on Earth. An Eco Friendly home there would be Heaven.

Fcole...........Many older building here in Washington are being converted to condos and the "preferred way of living" rather then a home...the cost for most is around 200 to 250 (thousand)....Many people don't want to be tied down to their lawns and taking care of too much..........and "GREEN" has been into the plans here for sometime already.......we are not surprised about "green".......
There is alot of sport fishing in New Mexico...Is that were the "green" home is?????

Hey what better place to build a Green Home then the Evergreen State of Washington. We have beauitful coastlines, rain forest & mountains a plenty. We need to have the Green home to make it even more perfect. Our State is a true wonder & every year more people are moving here to enjoy its beauty. Dream home you should too!

All the shows are tremendously helpful, and you can tell that everyone on the HGTV team really do care about people's homes and gardens. This "can do" attitude, encourages so many of us to take on home and garden projects that otherwise may never get done. I'm proud to be an HGTV inspired viewer...thank you...Joy

I fell in love with "Cape Cod,Massachusetts" from the very first time I went there with my parents/family when I was about 9 years old. There was something magical about crossing over the giant, arching, Bourne Bridge and coming down the other side onto the cape where you were greated with "welcome to Cape Cod" spelled out by beautifully manicured hedges and greens in the middle of the mammouth rotary circle. The cape has always had a unique charm all its own, that never changes and has captivated the hearts of nearly all who venture here. The last thirty some odd years, I've gone to the Cape each year several times, exploring from one end to the other looking for just the right spot to build MY dream home. Even though the ocean front is usually everyone's first choice to build a home, I've fallen absolutely in love with the idea of building a house on one of the 125 charming lakes or ponds of Cape Cod instead. Because many of the lakes and ponds on the Cape have crystal clear water with soft white sandy bottoms and shore lines that look just like the sandy beaches on the ocean, which still capture the same magic and romance of the moonlight without the vastness and dangers of the ocean; for those reasons I'd like to vote to see the next dream/green home built here. I think that the new green/dream home would fit in perfectly with the conservation efforts of the state of Massachusetts, especially Cape Cod, who has already initiated steps to build energy saving fields of windmills off their shores. Of course my wildest dream would be to WIN that home, the dream home of my heart.
Since the premire of the HGTV network (and subsequently its sister networks i.e. DIY, Fine Living, Food, etc.), I've been thrilled with the amount of ideas and impowering knowledge that shows such as Decorating Cents with Joan Steffend (still my most favorite show), Room by Room, Designed to Sell, etc., etc. have given me! I honestly feel that HGTV/its sister networks and Public Television are the VERY BEST television has to offer for the education, enrichment and entertainment of people. Bravo and "THANK YOU HGTV" for all you do to enrich our lives and improve the world around us!

Green is good. But, let's make it affordable and not be forced into selling it or making it into a bed & breakfast, or sharing with others. We all want a dream home, but not much of a dream if we can't keep it and live in it the way we want. Looking forward to seeing the layout and the ideas the team will have in decorating it. Seems the majority would like to live in it. Good luck to all.

Best idea yet. Does green also indicate Thermal heat for heating the house. Possibly a below ground cistern to filter rain water and a way to purify grey water for reutilization, purification and consumption ect. The less impact on enviromental resource consumption, the more I like it. Thanks so much for your involvement. The concept is great and I'm sure my Grandchildren will appreciate the efforts of HGTV

Thanks for thinking of the environment and about living and building "green". It's time for more shows that include environmentally friendly ideas in home design on HGTV. I look forward to the green home giveaway.
Please consider huricanes and flooding and airborne termites in your design of the Florida Keys Dream Home 2008; The preliminary rendering seems to have a lot of exterior wood for termites to eat, and a lot of high porch roofs that might be prone to wind damage. Hurricane shutters are a must.
Thanks for considering these things. I love HGTV.

Dear Linda Doyle april 22
The new Florida 08 dream home sweepstakes starts in January 08. There are two homes this year. One says it's the green dream home. It's earth friendly. Not sure when that sweepstakes starts or where it is yet. They just announced it! They are just showing some info on the goods right now. Also I'm not sure if this helps you with the make-over info but at the top of this page is some blue words underlined to the right, go to the one that says, Be on HGTV and find the heading that says, Are you a homeowner in need of a complete room makeover... more info.. C'mon,Jack,
Please let us see the floor plan ofDH2008 and also announce the location of the Green Home! The suspence is killing me! I have an awesome idea for DH2009. There's a lovely lake in central Illinois called Lake Sara....also near my hometown,Effingham,IL(great schools, friendly people, and a great town for raising a family or retiring!)HGTV, It is so wonderful that we have a chance to win two homes in 2008! Thank you!Thank you! Thank you!I really can't wait to see what Jack and Linda do with TWO homes!

Hurray! It's phenomenal that HGTV is doing a "green" home! I love that you will be bringing attention to a topic that is rapidly increasing in interest, and deservedly so. I'm wondering how much of the green home will also be self-sufficient? My husband and I dream of a building a home that is green and off-the-grid so that, when we retire, we won't have to worry about utility bills and the craziness surrounding those unpredictable energy costs.

I can not wait to see the Virginia Green Home!
I will be watching for hits when and if I am lucky to build a home. What about a magazine for Townhome owners, there are alot of us out there.
Thanks for all your hard work on the shows and to the labors for the long hours.

Hey, I am ready to go to Islamorada for the rest of my life. My husband and I visited Islamorada for many years before he passed away. I caught my first 100 lb. Tarpon there. When can we start entering the sweepstakes? I want to enter every single day!
Posted by Barbara Damelio – April 25, 2007 5:59 PM
I agree about going overboard on size, etc. of home. Also, how about more user friendly? Such as single level, wide open, and in a place with no severe weather for those of us who aren't so young. We are loyal viewers too, and would like to enter for a home we could actually live in. Also in an area where there are no cc&r's limiting pets. They are our kids now that ours are grown.

Great, I love green which signifies prosperity and health. I love HGTV. One day to Dream Home or the Green Home will be mine. Go HGTV!

I knew Jack was going to be a Parrot head and build in South Florida. Now I think the new green home should be in the caves of Arizon or New Mexico. Lots of sun, dry air,no big weather issues and he will not need to use any invasive tree cutting.

The green house must be for me. I love florida living. The green house is just the iceing on the green cake

I think that up and near the Blue Ridge Parkway near Boone N.C. What with global warming and the risk of coastline property floods ... a high cool place of such beauty would be ideal.

Dear HGTV,
Wow! TWO homes to dream about winning! I like the idea of an energy saving Green Home! We all need to think about trading in our big gas-guzzlers for hybrids! Let's pass on a beautiful Earth to our grandchildren! Please post the floor plans for both homes sooner rather than later...I can't wait to begin daydreamin of winnin in 2008! Thanks a million plus!

I love it that there will be a "green" home built. I am hoping, and maybe this has already been addressed, that your homes will be accessible for those in a wheelchair such as myself. I really enjoy watching the homes being built and I love entering with the hope of winning but it is always sad to think that I might not be able to get into the house even if I won. With this aging population of us baby boomers it would probably be prudent to make a house accessible anyway. Thanks for listening

hey i loveeeee the dream home its awsome its soooooo beutiful i just would like to see the floor plan lol

Applause on going with a sustainable design concept! I add that given that the 2007 Dream House is being built in the Florida Keys I hope you will be building an ICF home that will not only be energy efficient and very quiet but will withstand those all-too-prevelent Florida hurricanes!!

I'll be looking forward to the environmentally friendly home being built starting in June. Ed sounds like he's on top of another great project!

A green (environmentally friendly) home will teach viewers (us) how we can incorporate green into our own homes and avoid further global warming.
From the appliances in our homes labeled with the EnergyStar label to a home off the grid, each of us can value the education Mr. Begley will provide!
A cottage style beach home overlooking the water in Florida would be a fun build. I wonder what will be in store for the build?

We voted for a green home and we got it.
Thank you HGTV for granting us our WISH.
Posted by Annie – May 16, 2007 8:34 PM
I think it's wonderful that first of all that they are going to build an environmentally friendly home and second of all that so many of you have comnmented on which types of homes should be used and where to be weather friendly!I hope that HGTV READS your comments and sincerely takes your suggestions into consideration. I just found this site and will definitely return.Thank you all and God bless you and yours!

The only reason I don't mind paying my high cable bill is your station. HGTV is the best! And now you're goin' green, that's wonderful!
Love the Dream Home and I participate every year...but honestly wouldn't be able to afford to keep it. The green home will more likely not get sold after it's won.
Of course, I wish there could be a "green renovation" contest where the homeowner could have their own home renovated to use environmentally friendly and cost-efficient products. WIN-WIN situation for those of us who love our homes and want to save on energy costs, etc.

I am so excited you will be doing a GREEN HOME !
We need to take care of our environment!! We all need to reuse/recycle and find better energy sources . We all need to be more responsible in what we are doing to our earth .I think Oregon would be a great place for this GREEN HOME . I am looking forward to this upcoming GREEN HOME contest .

Doggonet we who want to help save our planet have arrived. Hope the trend continues.
Thanks to those who are involved in making this happen.

The Homestead Preserve in Bath County would be an ideal location for the green build to take place. Preservation and Conservation are prominent to the area. The home would be astounding in such a setting! Plus, there appears to be some great golf courses located on those rolling greens in Virginia.

If you would surprise everyone (including me) and build in Wisconsin USA, and, I might win, I could live near my gandchildren. Sorry to use so many I's but that would just be too grand to be near them. Too bad that lady doesn't realize Al Gore is "a man for himself". People should do their fairshare of homework.
Posted by Ruth Moody – May 28, 2007 6:20 PM
Bravo, HGTV! I hope you are going to take the Green home all the way: windmill power, solar power, building / positioning the home according to the microclimate and the macroclimate of the area where the home is being built, zerocapes, etc. and that you'll be educating viewers every step of the way. This could be the newest "extreme home makeover" show and could have lasting postive effects for generations to come. Go all the way with this one!

A GREEN Dream Home! Good job HGTV! Now this is my only problem....I love this house, BUT, this is the year that will not see me entering, unless it is on the chance that I may win and then definitely will sell immediately.
Is anyone looking at the terrain? So closed in by water, which would have been the best ever, BEFORE I became aware of Tsunamis and their destruction.

Thank GOD i was able to read about this. Green home. Oh that makes me miss home. Yes i was born and raised in the Philippines and my husband was born and raised in hawaii. All year round all we see is green. And i hope and pray that i will be part of this green home contest. This would benefit also my parents that will be joining us when all their paper works to come here in the states will be done. You all take care. Lets go GREEN.

I would think I have died and gone to heaven if I could move to the Keys. Please , please let it be me that finally wins the house. (sigh!)
Posted by Louise – June 4, 2007 12:24 AM
Since there is only 1 winner, (ok, this year only 2), I would like to see HGTV give away more to the less lucky. How about they have a contest when they put in the... say tile and someone wins tile; when they put in laminate or hardwood they win that; when they put in the windows they win that;new laundry/kitchen appliances;plumbing fixtures they win those, etc. etc. It would even be nice if they chose someone to win having their whole, (front and back), yard landscaped. (I know mine looks like the lunar landing.) It would sure make more of us winners and more companies getting people to send info to for entering.

GUYS- OK, JUST BECAUSE IT'S CALLED A "GREEN HOUSE", IT DOESN'T ACTUALLY MEAN THE COLOR OF IT IS GREEN! THEY'RE SAYING IT'S LIKE, ECO-FRIENDLY AND GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. YALL NEED TO WATCH " GET FRESH WITH SARA SNOW'!
Posted by christa – June 5, 2007 8:29 PM
Thank you, HGTV, for embracing this movement and leading the industry with this kind of programming. I'll be watching, and I will encourage friends and family to watch, too. Keep up the good work and let's hope your president gets on board soon.
Posted by Ed – June 6, 2007 8:47 AM
Thank you HGTV for going green. Now, it might become important in the minds of all if they see it on your programs. My husband and I have wanted to implement energy saving features, such as solar energy for heat and eectricity, in our home for years, but the cost are so high. Now with all the buzz and your shows promoting it maybe the costs will come down and the average homeowner out there will be able to afford to really get the process going. Keep recycling and promoting energy efficient products America! It's important for our future.

Islamorada, huh? Never mind green! What kind of construction are you using to withstand/survive hurricanes? Being on one of the Keys, that WILL be an issue.
Posted by Ellen – June 7, 2007 10:19 AM
Is there time to sneak sustainable products and mechanisms into the regular HGTV Dream Home 2008 in addition to the green of the "Green" Home 2008? At least pick a fuel efficient or hybrid car for the driveway eh! Heck, make the driveway out of some strong surfaced solar panels while you're at it. Is there such thing as a "water car," where the engine separates water into hydrogen and oxygen, eliminating the need for hydrogen fueling stations, and the car's only exhaust would be oxygen? Think of all the places boats/ ships could go with out needing to refuel or making all that toxic exhaust from dirty oil fuel. Yuk!
And I would definitely suggest a warm climate for the Green Home 2008 where natural ventilation is possible around the year, or maybe a cooler climate where at least there is access to thermal ground heat. Go off the grid HGTV! No air-conditioning or heating! Another idea - start an HGTV Green Research /Development show or a green home "inventors" show for people who come up with green products and materials for the home..... continue to help integrate innovative home ideas eventually changing the way we live, consume, and make waste. When you poop, 4 years later, you can scoop! Can you imagine, how ridiculous that seems, but, hmmm...maybe for the Green Home.
