I’m a self-proclaimed modernist and I love furniture and art that are unusual and unexpected. Honestly, I like to see the looks of amazement on the faces of my guests when they see something I’ve designed or purchased (my living room fireplace is filled with broken glass from which fire seems to magically appear). I’ve been fascinated by an ad I’ve see in the back of Dwell and other design magazines for some time. It’s for custom modern portraits and they are VERY unusual. What makes these giant printed canvas images custom is that they are created from your own DNA, fingerprints and lips. The fingerprint and lips prints are self explanatory. But the image representing your personal DNA starts out feeling more like a science experiment. It’s from a company called DNA 11. They send you a kit, which includes instructions and a swab, and you send the swab back to them, DNA included. You select the color scheme, but the pattern is distinctly yours. Actually, I think it looks more like the game BrickBreaker. But nonetheless, it’s a conversation piece and will most certainly wow your guests. Their website says that privacy is guaranteed, but I’m not sure I’m thrilled about having my fingerprints and DNA on file out there somewhere. What about you? If this piques your interest, you can get it now in the HGTV Marketplace. And what kind of unexpected art do you have in your house? Tell us about it here and show us at Rate My Space.

I think it's an interesting concept, but I understand why you'd be a little hesitant. How cool though to have your DNA documented in a truly one-of-a-kind piece of art.
As far as unexpected pieces, it's hard to name one. I am drawn to colorful, unusual objects that seem to have a history. Each make me smile for different reasons.
