Why So Gray?

While I love black and white design, I have to admit lately I've been drawn to spaces in shades of gray. Not as harsh as its neutral counterparts, gray is perfect for creating a sophisticated room with a lot of style.

This makeover by Candice Olson is the ideal combination of pewter and platinum (a few of my favorite grays). Wouldn't you love to sleep here?

Hi, HELP...just moved into our beautiful new home in Florida. The previous owners really loved grey! I can work with the master bath, but need help with the kitchen. Can't afford to remodle just yet, the countertops and cabinet doors are bettleship grey.(laminate) Ok... but please help with ideas for a wall color!! What would work besides the obvious red??????? Any ideas appriciated :)

Recently, my husband painted the lower level bathroom, gray. With red accessories and chrome accents, it looks fab.

i love gray!! i have been using gray for 20 years, finally everyone else is catching on.

I love the grays. Im an artist and I love the contrast between the lights and dark, very good value. I also, think the simplicity of the room is very refreshing,.

I would love to see a little more sparkle (with silver accents, mirrors, crystal) and a teensy weensy bit of deep red.

Sorry, but this is too much grey for me. It makes the whole room like an ash tray.

i LOVE that gray! I always want to do it, but am a little weary. This is beautiful!!

Posted by Kelly – September 21, 2008 10:09 PM

The room is lovely, however so much grey feels a little lifeless.

Beautiful beyond words, of course it''s a Candice design. I was looking today at a kitchen remodel with Pewter w/Graphite Glaze ( Kraft Maid) stunning.

If Candice had ANYTHING to do with any room, you can best believe it will be beautiful.

I have used the metallic silver paint (Ralph Lauren) in my bar and it does'nt look good at all. I put it on with a close nap roller and it has streaked on the walls. What can I do to get a metallic finish or just a smooth finish?
Thank you,
Christy

It just seems a little too cold for a bedroom. I need a little warmer color or accent to make it feel cozy. Maybe a blue throw or accent pillows. It needs some warming up.

re: Why So Gray ? by Candice Olsen; where might one find those fabulous chairs?

We LOVE gray! Absolutely our favorite neutral that goes with every color. It is so serene and calming and works really great in a bedroom, as shown in your photo.

Posted by Tonic Home – September 23, 2008 8:11 PM

I like it very much. I would add a pop of color as well.

Posted by Boda – September 24, 2008 9:39 AM

It looks nice, but it is not for me. I like elegants with color, like silver and gold together with red.

The room is gorgeous!!! It looks like a very soothing space to end your day or just spend some relaxing time away from the stress of our every day lives.

I have been thinking of painting our master bedroom gray. I have been worried about a cold feeling. Your room is beautiful. I hope I can pull it off. I will study your picture for tips to keep it warm and inviting!

I love the color of gray on your walls. What is the name and brand of the paint? We are trying to find a shade of gray for our kitchen and after 2 attempts, we are getting frustrated.

This looks great. I would have never thought of using grey in my bedroom. Again, this is absolutly wonderful.

Although I love Candice's makeover, I am puzzled by the use of grays in so many of her and other's designs. To me, (and it is only my opinion), gray is a very depressing color. We went the gray color route in the 80's in our son's room. Never again!!!

I prefer the cool palette to the warm, so I tend to decorate in grays. Look at the finer suits for men and you have a wonderful array of textures and shades to choose from. This room is beautiful!

Posted by Diana – September 30, 2008 10:46 PM

very soothing. I can see a color scheme like this working in a bathroom as well. A lot of our clients at myhomeus.com are searching for spa-like design palettes for their bedrooms and bathrooms and this gray certainly fits the bill!

Posted by Rod – October 1, 2008 9:51 AM

O! Yes. I would love to sleep in a room exactly like it.

Looks great....could a purple be worked in with that????

I'm looking at a lot of color questions on this blog. All of you are correct with your color pairings.

A really good tip I learned years ago was to look at high-end men's suits and ties. See how much color variation there is in a good tie? You can blend all those colors with your base of gray or beige.

I'm a "winter palette", and have always decorated in shades of gray. It never goes out of style, yet always looks stylish - and you can change your accent colors as the seasons progress. Think of it in terms of "everything goes", and don't forget to have fun!

The room is very put together, however..the greys are far too overwhelming in this room. A little touch of grey can be so elegant but too much brings depression to a room. A little color never hurt anyone!!

Can anyone please tell me the brand and name of the paint she used? This is the color palette of my bedroom.
