Containers are key! Really think about what needs to be stored and get the correct sizes to take care of those things.

These are beautiful examples of why people should get organized. I started my own organizing business a few months ago and love the reaction the home owner has when they have serenity and order in thier home. Now it's about keeping things in order? Once you see how great things look, it makes you more inclined to stay organized. Does any one have tips on how or where to advertise for my business. Referrals work, but I'd like my business to grow beyond that. I think hiring an organizer to get you started is a wonderful gift to give to yourself. Busy professionals need this service. I live in Santa Fe and look forward to meeting my next client.

Good points and suggestions for organizing your life...as well as your home.
I stopped subscribing to magazines and newspapers a long time ago - why buy them when I can access them at my library?
I also found that making up menus for the week and buying just what I need - when I need it saves me money and clutter. I don't buy in bulk, it takes up space...and after a year or so I found I really don't need all that much on a weekly basis.

Might I make a suggestion? If you are taking on the task of organizing your master bedroom closet..take everything out, try things on and rid yourself of things you've had for years that don't fit. Also give your closet a fresh coat of paint before putting everything back in. What a difference! How many people do that? Just curious? Carole at Organizing Day.

Carole; You can put a ad on craglist it's free. Just google it.

Love the blog! One suggestion -- add an "email this" link so that it's a snap to send your excellent suggestions along to others who could benefit.

Answer for Carole. I think that is a great idea, but I don't think most people take everything out of their master closet - just reorganize. Our walk-in is 15 ft long and I'm grateful for a large walk-in. We recently had new carpet laid in the closet after 6 years and took everything out including items on shelving. I'm happy to say we really only use half the space. It certainly feels good not being a bit crowded. Doesn't feel like a storage room. Everyone...clean out your closet.

Carole,
I actually DID that about a year ago - and it is a wonderful suggestion! I pulled out stuff I didn't even realize I still had, and the fresh coat of paint on the walls made the whole space feel clean, tidy and really boasted by spirits!
Not to mention - I cleared out enough room to add a full length mirror inside my closet!

I HAVE USED SEVERAL IDEAS IN GETTING ORGANIZED FROM YOU SHOWS!
BUT I NEVER REALLY SEEM TO GET TOTALLY ORGANIZED BETWEEN WORK, MY DAUGHTER BEING INVOLVED IN A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES, HELPING MY MOM & DAD - BOTH IN THEIR 80'S - IT JUST SEEMS LIKE THERE IS NEVER ENOUGH OF TIME TO GET DONE WITH EVERYTHING - KEEP THE IDEAS COMING AS THEY DO HELP A LOT. I REALLY LIKE YOU SHOWS A LOT - ESPCECIALLY THE ORGANIZATION SHOWS - THEN I KNOW I'M NOT ALONE - CAROLYN

As a web designer and digital artist, I struggle with staying organized because I may need to reference several books while working on a project and they end up all over my desk and on the floor.

Time for me is very tight and since I'm on my computer for what seems to be 10 hours a day, it's nice to know I can just come to the blog for quick ideas to get back on track.

Thanks for the tips.

I think the size of the closet shouldn't make a difference. Even a smaller one needs sorted out and painted sometimes. This blog rocks. Thanks, Marta

Thank you Kat for your suggestion about advertising on Craig's list. I've never been on that sight, but I posted the ad just the same. Does anyone know the name of the color in the contemporary craft room. Blues are coming back. It looks so peaceful.

Carolyn,
It sounds like you have your hands full. If you are having time management issues, maybe it would help to have a professional organizer come into your home and help you. The trick is keeping things organized after they leave. They say you can change any habit (bad or good) in twenty one days. So just keep putting things back in the same place and soon it will become automatic. Your stress level will then be reduced and you will be creating more harmony in your home. The best of luck to you. It's tough dealing with aging parents.

My basic rule of thumb is if I don't use in the last year, then I don't need it, and can get rid of or donate it to a charity needing those items.

This keeps my clutter down and spaces open.

Thanks for the organization tips in the closet. I've needed to declutter my closet for over a year now and have started a million times, but never got very far with it. I work two jobs and what little time I have free I just want to sit on the couch and watch tv. However, I'm determined to get this monster taken care of once and for all. I'm getting motivated again and I look forward to seeing what I can accomplish.

I want to know where Carole lives and how much she charges. My house looks like the city dump and badly needs organizing. I'm handicapped or I'd do it myself. I used to be very organized, but then I became a mom and it all went out the window.

This last year has been a great organizing/decluttering exercise for me. Here are a couple of hints I learned and that have helped me (I don't have a ton of time to spend on this, am rather a "creative messie", and am looking to declutter once and for all.

1. Clothes - start with one drawer. Completely empty it, go through the drawer, sort it, give things away (put in the car after you're done THEN), and go to the next drawer. Just having ONE drawer completely organized gives me the impetus/motivation to continue moving along.

2. Paper. I am a paper/magazineaholic. I now tear sheets from magazines that I want, then after they're in a file for awhile I scan them and have them electronically. I throw away the paper. I burn things to DVDs and then make a backup on an OFF-SITE backup site. I donate the magazines to my workplace gym as well as to the local library.

3. I have started really thinking about what I need to keep and what I enjoy. I have moved to a place that is 1/2 the size of my former apartment. It's amazing how much stuff you find you have and therefore don't have to spend gas and $ to buy :)

Hi Joanne,
I live in Santa Fe and would be happy to help you get organized. Where are you?

As a Realtor in Columbus, OH, I refer many of my clients to Let's Get Organized as a way to guide them in preparing their homes for showing. Just about everyone seems to catch on and put the tips to work. It really is amazing to see what a little bit of direction from a site like this will do for anyone who is motivated!

I have a question for anyone who has been a yo-yo dieter. If you have lost alot of weight, should you keep your large size clothing...just in case. I'm organizing my friend in San Diego and we are dealing with this very subject. I'm saying, get rid of old clothing and keep up the great work. Once you get to your goal, go out and fill your closet with all brand new things. Donate and recycle things that don't fit. Why do people hang on?

Love the way plants have been used inside home offices to give that natural look. Here is another source of inspiration on using indoor plants.
