Good Morning Constance,
First off I would like to say I watch your show every day just to get some new Ideas. My home is 2 years old and I have always had white walls. My Girls said it's time I use some color in our new home. So, I have used a little deeper mustard gold in the laundry room.Entering from the garage. Then comes the kitchen, there I have used a soft linin. The greatroom has high ceilings, fire place on one end. Iwas thinking about putting a cinninom color on the fire-place wall.As a accent wall. What would you suggest for the our two walls plus forear. It's all open concept when you enter throw the front.
Also what would you suggest for the formal dinning, it's right next to great-room.And my last question is, What do you suggest useing along ceilings to make straight lines, other then painters tape??? My I please hear from you.
Thank You So much. Debbie Carpenter,Racine Wisconsin.

Hi Constance,
I have a ~1900 sq ft home in Carrollton, TX and love it but the bathrooms are small and in the center of the house, any color ideas to make them seem bigger?

Hi Constance, I have a couch that is a persimmon, maroon color, and I can't seem to find anything to compliment it. The walls are a neutral gold. I would like some pop, but not sure what direction to go. Terra Cotta, Olive, or some kind of brighter red? I usually can visualize and come up with something. Wish I would have purchased a neutral couch. Oh well, hope to hear from you. Appreciate your time.

My husband and I have purchased a newly constructed home and all of the rooms need to be painted and I am feeling a little overwhelmed. My kitchen, living room and sun room are all one big open space. Is it OK to paint each room a different color? I was thinking of a cream for the kitchen and a blue gray for the sun room and a light gray green for the living room. All if the furniture and flooring is neutral. Thanks for your input.

Hi Constance, My master bedroom suite has a blue, gold, red, taupe color scheme. The bedroom is blue, the sitting room a deep red and both rooms have gold, brown and taupe used throughout. My master bath is my problem. The countertops are taupe and the tile is light taupe with accent tiles of yellow-gold. I can't figure out what color to paint the bathroom walls. Yellow is obvious but doesn't seem right in a bathroom. What would you suggest?

Hello Constance,
We are in the process of remodeling our very small block house, we love the look of Tuscany and would like to incorporate that in a room combo we are creating. We are opening our tiny kitchen to join the living room, by tearing down a wall between the two. We are having a difficult time choosing a base color, that we have pretty much throughout the house (very small) but still accent the Tuscany feel especially in the kitchen, do you have suggestions for a base and accent colors? Thank you very much!

Hi Constance, We are in the process of remodelling our open concept family room/kitchen area. The appliances, countertops and backsplash are all neutral beige. Our furniture in the family room is also beige, with light colored hardwood floors. I recently watched a HGTV program where they used blue and beige to create a beach-themed room. Our rooms face south with lots of window exposure. Could you make some suggestions. Thank you. Marsha Keracher, Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada

In our split level house, the family room is downstairs and doesn't get much natural light (although the two half windows do face South, and I've added a large mirror to help reflect some light). I am trying to figure out what color to paint the room. I would go for a yellow (sunshine in a can!) but my hubby swears he doesn't like any shade of yellow. What color should I choose instead of yellow to help brighten the room? (Or, alternatively, how hard should I fight for my yellow walls?)
Also, I have considered a beach cottage theme for the room, but am not tied to it.
Thanks!

Hello Constance, After searching 2 years for the right home, we should be closing on a house this August. The house is a colonial with a first floor open concept, the living, dining and kitchen is all open to each other. We are looking to buy espresso color dining table with matching chairs, and matching coffee table for the living room area. Currently the kitchen cabinets are all white with white counter top and light oak floor, in the near future we would like to change out the cabinets to either cherry or maple, we are afraid so many different colors of wood will not flow, please advise, we really like the chocolate color furniture and really don’t like the white kitchen cabinets, we are afraid if we would go with similar color kitchen cabinets as the furniture the area would be too dark and heavy. Should we put a wall in the kitchen to close off from the living and dining room area? Or is there a way to bring all the colors together (the walls are painted soft shade of yellow). Thank You! Jola, from Beverly, Mass.

Hi Constance. My husband and I really enjoy your show. We have a HUGE dilema. We just built our dream house. I was able to pick the colors for the bedrooms, but I am not sure what to paint in the great room because it is so big and it flows into the kitchen and the dining room. I have dark cherry wood floors and a beautiful brick and stone fireplace. My couch and loveseat are both a light lime green color. I have paint swatches all over the wall because I am not sure what color to go with. Do I go with a neutral color throughout? Do I use an accent color? Do I do a lighter shade in the kitchen to make everythnig flow? PLEASE HELP.

Hi Constance,
I just bought a new house in Georgia and I am uncertain about what color to paint the kitchen. The cabinets are a honey baige, the counter is a black, baige light and dark color. The kitchen is in the middle of the house so it is very dark. And it's an open floor plan and I don't really want to paint the whole downstairs the same color. The rest of the downstairs is very bright.

Hi Constance!
We remodeled our 2nd bathroom last year & we just can't quite get the colors to work together! The tile is a soft sandy color (light beige), the bottom half of the walls (covered in Tongue and Groove Wainscot) is painted a dark blue to imitate the deep blue of looking out over the ocean, and the top of the walls is painted with Behr's Bellagio Faux in BF-15 to imitate a blue sky. Fixtures, ceiling, & trims are all white. The dark blue is the problem. When I compare the colors to a photo looking out over the beach & across the ocean, the colors seem to match, but when I walk into the bathroom, it does not inspire anything beachy at all... its just too blue. We know the wainscotting needs a color correction, but haven't the foggiest idea where to go with it! I've watched your show many times hoping you would address a similar room, but to no avail! Thanks for your help! Maggie

Hi Constance, Love the show and I learn a lot. We just purchased a home that was custom built for the previous owner. Problem is that was 15 years ago. All of the homes trim and doors are solid oak stained in a dark cherry.(and we just did the entire house except for the kitchen in dark cherry hardwood floors) I'm not sure if this dates the home because all I see in magazines is white trim. I love the woods character but I think that white would be nice and modern. I am having trouble trying to decide. Do I dare paint over this nice wood or how do I make it work with my modern/transitional taste. I have painted all the walls in light neutrals because I am afraid color will make my home appear dark and old.Can all of this wood be hip and modern? Help

Hi Constance,
After my divorce I got the family room furniture and I don't want to use the same beige color. My new house is very open with the dining room, family room, and kitchen all open to each other. Also, the light is not as good because the house faces south (I'm in Denver). I have a deep eggplant leather sofa and occassional chair with a golden speckled round ottoman in fabric. I feel like the wall color should be a golden tuscany color but what color, also the family room area is two stories. I want a comptemporary look, warm, welcoming, and somthing that does not darkened the room more. Also, there are windows along the back of the house.
Thank you, Toni, Denver, CO

Hola Constance,
We are trying to add some color to our house. It has been white since we bought it in 2006. We dont not have any idea on how to combine colors for our master bedroom. We have tried different colors (by painting a small portion of the wall) and havent found a winner. I like a blue (russian blue) but dont know how it will look if we paint the whole room. Should we use that color in only one wall and paint the rest with a lighter one?. Please we need your help.

Hi Constance,
Should a front door be painted the same color on both sides of the door? The exterior color of the house is coordinated with the interior, but the front door (exterior side) is a dark shade and the interior walls are a lighter shade of the same family color. One note, all other interior doors and trim are white. Should the interior side of the front door match the other interior doors (white) or, again, should it be the darker color that is on the exterior side?
Thanks!

Hello Constance,
I am in the process of stripping off the wallpaper in my master bath. I would like to paint this bathroom so it will project spa relaxation. My sitting room a 12x15 room that does not have a window needs paint as well as my bedroom which is a long room a 12x36. All rooms are connected so I wanted them to cooridinate. My question to you is what three colors will be a relaxing color palate that projects warmth and spa feelings? I like warm earthy tones. I do not like colors that are cool.

Hi Constance.
I live in a late '20's craftsman bungalow in Seattle, WA. When I moved in I painted the interior in a palette that suits the house. The colors are warm and rich with all the original heavy, dark-stained windows and trim still exposed. My problem is that my style leans more towards the modern. So my contemporary furnishings look very out of place. I want a more light, crisp, clean look to compliment my furnishings. But I'm afraid of its possible conflict with the architecture. Any ideas?
Thanks so much.

I have used aqua paint in a small bedroom. The walls were off-white and had been since we moved in. Hello Constance,
First off I have to say that you are so creative and amazing and I love your show. Here is my problem, I am a red fanatic so I painted my kitchen which is in the middle of two living areas. It is a deep red with back accents(pics, curtains, etc). I am wanting to paint the two living areas but I am unsure of what colors to use. They are currently antique white. (My husband always insists on this color, ugh). I have western decor in both areas, alot of browns and neutral colors. I really want the rooms to flow together. To make the areas more cozy and look balanced with the dark red any suggestions?

Hello Constance,
Thank you for having this place to ask questions. The living room in our home is 20X20 with a cathedral ceiling, approx. 16 feet at the highest point. We would like to repaint, the color is now yellow which matched our old furniture. We purchased new furniture several years ago and the color does not match the current furniture. I would like to consider a neutral tone. I would like to extend the color into the formal dining room and hall, which is open to the living room. One of the walls in the livingroom is partilly brick. I though to continue this wall wich an accent color of brick red. The dilema is the high ceilings in the living room with exposed wood color ties, which pose thier own dilema, and lower ceiling of 7 1/2 feet in the rest of the rooms, will these colors work?
Thank in advance for your help.

Hi Constance,
I need your help, we just bought our first home it is huge it is beautiful, but it has dark teal or peacock green carpet through the whole house, we can not afford to replace the carpet yet so I need to make it look nice for my house of boys, being the only female in the house my boys ages 7 and 2 and husband and brother do not understand why this is important to me. I have so many rooms to furnish and decorate but the teal carpet would not have ever in a million years been in my colors, So here are the rooms I need help with for that teal carpet, the Master bedroom, I want it to feel cool and comfortable so I want to keep it romantic yet not to girly we live in a city were temps can top out at over 110, the family room, this is the hang out room everyone will use, for this I want darker colors that will hold up to little boys and big boys, but still a touch of girl and lastly the dinning room we have never been dinning room people for the most part we eat in front of the tv, I guess the statement I want to make is cozy family, the room is quite large, and we have a large extended family that will be around for Holidays in our home so we want it to look nice but not stuffy or elegant. So all your suggestions are appreciated as the teal peacock green carpet is stressing me out.

I have picked out the colors that I want to paint in the great room and the master bedroom. However I have been thinking of maybe just painting an accent wall either in the great room and or the master bedroom. The walls are currently eggshell. Could I pull off just painting accent walls or do you suggest painting all the walls? My colors are gumleaf (green family) for the great room and fudge for the master bedroom.

Hi Constance,
I love to watch your show and I am learning alot, but I'm too scared to get started. I have an open concept living room, kitchen and informal dining space. I am wanting to paint the walls in these rooms so they will flow together better. My living room is a somewhat dark room with only one large window to one side with a covered porch just outside it. My dining room and kitchen, however, are bright rooms with a whole wall of windows. My living room has natural oak floors and my sofa is an antique gold sofa with muted burgundy and sage green (more blue instead of yellow) flowers. I have a burgundy leather love seat and the rug is burgundy, gold, black, and green Indian rug on the floor. I want to paint the walls something other than white but am scared of making my living room too dark and the color washing out in my dining room/kitchen. I think I would like to paint the walls green but I have no idea how to do it or what sheen would look best on the walls. Any help you can give would be appreciated. Thank you.

Dear Constance,
I purchased my first place less than a year ago. I figured with a little elbow grease I’d easily be able to paint the rooms to suit my tastes and furnishings. Wrong!
Here’s my color dilemma. I have a townhouse so the living room is a bit narrow and long. It is north facing with one window and beige Berber carpet. I have two upholstered slip chairs in a wonderful aubergine and a love seat in a silvery gray with some greenish undertones. I had originally thought to paint the walls some shade of lavender. I also have considered a neutral grey. I now have eight color samples on the walls with grays and purples along with a pink and a green. None of these colors are right. They look all wrong and none of the colors seem to complement my furniture.
How do I pick the right color? Why does a color chip look good when you hold it next to the furniture, but then the actual paint color sample is so far off from the envisioned room? How do I solve this color dilemma? Plus, I have two bedrooms and two bathrooms to paint! HELP!

My 2 year old house has a huge family room. We decided not to paint it due to its size, so the walls are white. We purchase beautiful brown leather sofa set and the drapes on the huge windows are in copper brown velvet.
Now I want to add some colors thru pillows and paintings.
What color throw pillow will be appropriate? Aqua / Teal / Orange/ Lime green?
I want to put huge paintings on the wall behind sofa. What should be the main colors on the art work so it becomes the center piece ofthe room and not the big screen tv?

Constance,
Please help. This has been an issue for the past 10 years. We have a large entry that is open to a living room and dinning room. There is slate in the entry and hall area. The living room and dinning room wood flooring is a med.brown tone.. Woodwork is dark cherry. My sofa is a very dark green. The problem is the slate ----it is almost a blue teal with a very small amount of brick color here and there. It seems to over power everything. I am looking for a way to make these old colors look new.
Any help to wall, drapes, and chairs color would be so much appreciated. Thank you. Another Constance

Constance, we love to watch you on HGTV!
Our dilemma is this...I love the yellow in our dining room and living room (Benjamin Moore's 'Roasted Sesame Seed'). And in our kitchen we are using Benjamin Moore's Details paint color 'XP-30'.
However, I am having difficult time finding a green for our reading room/library. Do I use one with blue tones? Grey tones? Yellow tones? Our furniture is dark walnut and our view from one big window in this room is of lots of greenery and a pond surrounded by grey stones.
I thought this would be so simple to choose a green, but I either go too pale and it appears 'sea-foamy' or it doesn't have a 'fresh' feel. It ends up looking 'old' or having a 'dingy' feel.
Please help before I paint all four walls...AGAIN! Thank you!
(PS Tuscan/cottage is the feel I'm trying to achieve)

Hey Constance. I watch your show! I have a red brick back of my fireplace in my sunroom, which was enclosed from a screened-in porch. The room is mostly windows with a sliding glass door. The painted area of the room is honeymilk. I have primed the fireplace and need to paint that area. The room is open on the left and right sides of the fireplace area. Should I paint it honeymilk to match the other painted parts of the room, which are small areas or should I paint it a contrasting color? Thanks for your help.

Hello, My house is a brick twin built in 1886. Orignal wood shutters on house are painted Garden Green with accents of Jersey Cream. The lite salmon lvg room opens to the dark peach dining room to the Flan kitchen to the Flan sunroom. I want to repaint the dark peach as over the years it has become very dark (only west light from the window). Furniture is cherry and dark oak, both antique china cabinets. Dining room table is covered with soft white/colored embrodiered cloth bedspread (antique)and painted white chairs, wall-to-wall carpet lite brown. Monet painting Red Boats on wall. Any color suggestions. Thanks, Carol

Constance,
I am looking for a suggestion on a nice neutral tan/brown color (no pink undertones) to paint my living room. I have see many model homes that have light neutral browns--but would like specific names/paints you would recommend as I have trouble looking at a paint sample and picturing how it would look in a room.
Thanks,

being left all white - even white doors and white trim! I'm overwhelmed by the white and don't even know where to begin!? Thanks for any suggestions and help!

Hi Constance ,
Glad to see you have your own show. The question I have is....my daughter who is 15 picked out a new set of bed linens and comforter. The comforter is a black and white mod(almost paisley) print, and the sheets are white with gray diamonds. She want to go green but I am not sure!I was also told that taupe would be a good color. Oh and she also wants an accent wall! HELP!!!!

Hello Constance: First of all, I have been watching HGTV for many years and have always enjoyed your shows. You are one of our favorite shows, I also love Clive Pearse and his accent, Candice Olson of Divine Design, her show really is DIVINE, my husband loves her. I live in and own a 2 bedroom co-op apt. with about 1200 s.f. of space in Rego Park (County of Queens), New York. You walk into a nice size foyer which opens to l.r. and d.r. on your right side, next to d.r. is kitchen and bedroom next to same. Other bedroom is on other side of d.r. My l.r. has only one window which opens to a terrace. This is the only light into the l.r. and d.r. has no window/light except from window in kitchen.
My dilema first is the color, my contemporary sofa/couch are an olive green, 2 Parigine armchairs in rich red colors, wine cabinet, set of 3 l.r. tables with glass tops, t.v. stand and stereo stand. My furniture is a mix of a little of everything, the foyer has a bombay chest with marble top, old trunk with old suitcases, old wood cabinet which holds our dvd's for now. My d.r. has a round table with four upholstered chairs in faux suede.
I have painted the foyer/living room/dining room area 2 times in one year. The current color is a metallic green from Ralph Lauren which is way too dark. I haven't repainted due to fact that I'm so frustrated from the past two failures, I have no incentive left to paint another color.
Please help me with apartment, I really need some help and would be forever grateful with any assistance you can give me.
Very truly yours,
Mary Tacury

Hi Constance,
Love your show. I am not the decorator and needs a lot of help. I am thinking about painting my entire house a Warm Muffin by Behr. All the trimmings are white. I would like to go with sage green curtain accents in the dining room and red in the living room. I also plan to add new a new granite countertop in my kitchen. Should I go with a countertop that matches the paint color or should I go black? Just to let you know, my dining room furniture is black with an Oriental print theme. Please help with my color correction

Hi, Constance! Let me first say, lovin ur show. I'll b honest, sumtimes I get unsure about sum of the colors that get put 2gether. But as I continue to watch. I am so surprised at the full picture! Its so amazing on the style and colors after they all come 2gether! Now my husband watches it with me! That is why I'm here 4 sum advice on color. I love the italian culture. I married an italian man! I love warm, earthy tones. My home is mostly taupe, warm olive, mustards, and burgundys, with of course iron work. But my whole house on the walls is white, plain white! I am stuck on what color to do my walls. Most of my furniture is oak distressed wood, iron, and taupe colored furniture. I'm unsure about putting taupe on the walls with having taupe colored furniture. Will you please help me?

Hi Constance! Please help!!!!
My sister and I just got the keys for our first house. We are very exited but we've got a color dilema. We have a small living room, 18x15 and in the front wall there is a built in entertainment center made of oak(kind of caramel color).
Our couch is dark burgundy, almost eggplant and the coffee table and the dinning room furniture is
dark wood, almost black. So... should we stain the entertainment center dark wood or paint it white or beige (like the walls). Is the dark wood going to make the room look even smaller? How about white painting?
We are planning on moving by the end of july. Please Constance, help us!!!
Thank You!

Hi Constance: First wanted to say I love your show . . . watch it all the time. I have a different color in every room of my house. My dining room is choclate brown with turquoise/blue accents, trying to do a Tuscan kitchen, and my living room is gray. That's the room I need some help with. We had oversized sliding doors in the LR, but we recently built an addition to house my parents, who are both ill. The addition is lovely, but we lost the sliding doors and a lot of light into the room. My couch and loveseat are camel leather (large and overstuffed), and the woodtones are a walnut. I really like the gray, but think it might not be a good choice any longer with the lack of light -- it's a light gray, not a dark gloomy gray. I had been thinking about doing some sort of accents with black on one wall to really make the camel furniture pop. But, I just don't know what to do now, and would appreciate any insight you could provide. Thanks so much for your time!!!!

Hello~I have tried to paint my living room twice. I have one red and three yellow walls. When I pick out the colors at the store and with the painting I am trying to follow, it goes well. When I paint it on, it's not right. I have stucco for walls:( I am doing a Italy theme. I am using an eggshell finish, as anything else is too shiny. The yellow looks nice, but when I put up the red it looks horrible. I am at a loss. Please help!! Also, I don't know what to choose for window treatments, the blue or green in the pictures, or something completely different. I know it's hard to say without seeing everything. Any assistance you have would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

Constance,
We live in a townhouse. We recently painted our family room which connects with the kitchen a light gold color. There is a small window (about 24 x 30) and a French door for which we need window treatment in this room. What do you suggest? I have considered gold sheers almost the same color as the walls, but I'm unsure whether it would be better to use these or go with wood shutters or other blinds...

Hello Constance:
We are updating our 1970's kitchen. We already have oak hardwood floors which will remain. The new cabinets will be a Shaker Style in an off-white color (with smaller square cabinets with windows above the regular cabinets for showcasing my red/white transferware collection. The island/cabinets will be a nutmeg color which matches the round tabletop of our dinette set (white pedestal bottom with white chairs with nutmeg color seats). We will have to choose a granite countertop and I'm torn between a classic black surface versus a honey colored speckled granite. Which do you think will be more classic and hold the test of time and will go well with the cabinets, dinette set, etc.? Also, what color of backsplash should I pick with each of these granite colors? And finally, what about a paint color for the walls? THANKS SO MUCH FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE.

Help. I have a living rm. kitchen connected to each other with a vaulted ceiling that peaks about 2/3 through the living rm. In the kitchen is a plant shelf about 1.5 ft above the cabinets. The wall goes up from there to the ceiling. I have painted the kitchen walls a cask gold which helps the white cabinets look better. I had to stop at the plant shelf as the wall above it is connected to the living rm. The living rm is painted builders off white. Would it look alright to paint the living rm. a light taupe and carry it into the kitchen above the plant shelf seeing the lower portion is cask gold?

My house is a stucco, contemporary (CA) style. My husband and I are working on one room at a time, desperately trying to decorate this house in a soft modern/contemporary style. It had an awful traditional/country mix when I bought it! I am remodeling my kitchen with dark espresso stained modern cabinets, brushed nickel hardware, slate flooring with various colors (not your typical all dark gray), and I would like to know what color countertop and backsplash to use. My family room, which is partially open to the kitchen, has a slate fireplace, maple flooring, dark brown mantel and other accents, with taupe walls, red accent wall over the fireplace, and golden yellow and red pillows on the medium brown sectional sofa. We like bright colors, and are not afraid to have a fun backsplash using interesting materials. Thank you for your help!

I would like to paint my spare bedroom burnt orange or something similiar and chocolate brown. The space is small with a hardwood floor and wood trimming (I believe honey pine). There are two windows kitty corner to each other and two closets. I bought some orange paint for a different room last year thinking it was like a burnt orange color, well it was halloween orange, the exact orange color of Home Depot. I never used it. Since I have a whole gallon, can I mix the paint with a color to get burnt orange? Also will the chocolate brown look nice with the woodwork? I'm in dire need of your expertise! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Constance,
I need help in the bedroom! Seriously...I have a dark cherry french furniture set (beautiful) and I've decided to go with a sort of french blue (you know the light blue-gray with a touch of green) on the walls with white trim. I went a little vintage with a white chenille bedspread but now I'm stuck. I have no idea what to do for drapes (or throw pillows) What the color should it be? Solid, print, stripes? What is a girl to do? Also, the furniture and ceiling fan have antiqued brass accents. I just can't make a decision. Thanks!

Hi Constance,
I don't have a single dime to waste. After my divorce, I moved from a large house into a 1360 sq. ft. condominium with an open floor plan. The walls are stark white, the carpeting is an alabaster white. The windows have alabaster shades and I've added cream color scarfs on the windows that match the tile surrounding the fireplace and in the front entrance. My living room couch is black leather with a leopard print sette. My end tables and dining room furniture and bedroom furniture are all cherry, Queen Anne style. I have gold mirrors on the walls. What do you recommend as a paint color. So far, I'm thinking Irish Cream from Sherwin Williams but do you think I need to take more of a risk?

Hi Constance,
I would like to begin with telling you that I totally love HGTV and especially Color Correction. This is my dilemma. I had to move back home with my parents and the room that is now called mine has plain white walls. I also purchased a tan and white striped comforter set which I like a lot and want to keep in the room. I am looking for a very calm relaxing retreat to call my own. I would like for the walls to be blue, but choosing the proper color blue is what is giving me a hard time. So I am hoping that you can give me some of your expert advice so I can finally relax in a space of my own.

Love your show:) Here's a seemingly easy question, but I've had the hardest time figuring out! Just bought a white and bright yellow (technically "marigold")flowered duvet and bedding set from Pottery Barn. What color do I paint the wall behind it!!!? It's a fairly narrow room, maple hardwood floors, somewhat low ceilings, all walls are white right now. Furniture is flexible, that we can change for the right wall color! This is really killing me, please help!

My condo association picked a shade of light green from a paint chip to paint all the common building hallways, each of which is 600 feet long. It turned out more of an apple green/yellowish shade which everyone hates. Other than paying to have it all redone, is there anything inexpensive we could do to tone it down? Thanks for your consideration.

Hi Constance,
I've been a fan since your EMHE days, so I'm hoping you can help me with a color problem. We're working on a 'project house' in central Florida that will be sold in a couple of years, and we don't want to have to repaint before selling it. We will live in it for that time. My husband wants it all beige to appeal to the most buyers, but I'm leaning toward a soft sage for the master suite and family room, and a dusty browny terracotta (NOT orange)for the formal living/dining room. The rest of the house can be a nice neutral tan with all white trim. The kitchen is in cherry with stainless appliances and all the floors are 18" caramel color tile. This house is in the $500k price range and my research says that buyers in that range want some 'pow' in the colors of their homes. What would be best for this home?
thanks,

I have a problem. My hubby has a huge collection of John Deere toys. The carpet in the room is grey. He does not want the room to be painted too dark. What color would you paint this room?
Posted by MG – June 13, 2008 10:25 PM
Hi Constance,
I love your show and the way you make color palettes make sense. I have a two fold dilema which starts with the layout of my house. You walk into the front door into a small foyer which opens into the dining room and continues straight thru to the back of the house past the open kitchen and family room. I don't have a formal living room, but the dining room is more or less formal and my furniture is as well. The wall from the foyer is continous all the way back to the family room. I love the blues and greens of the caribbean, when I see these colors they make me feel good and happy. I would like to incorporate them, but don't know how to do this without going too far. My floors are all neutral, a yellowy oak wood in the dining room, beige tile in the kitchen and beige carpet in the family room. My dining furniture is a dark slightly distressed cherry and rather formal, plus, I have an area rug under the dining table with palm trees in varying shades of dark greens, gold and beige. A smaller version of this rug is in the foyer. I am afraid this rug and my dining room furniture dictate that I do green in the dining room with golden yellows, but now, I have to figure out how to carry out my caribbean blues and greens for the much less formal kitchen and family room when there is a wall that runs from the dining room. I would like to put the color on the walls because furniture is much more expensive than wall paint, so I'd like to keep furniture fairly neutral, maybe some accent pillows. I guess you kind of have to see it to understand, but if you can, I would greatly appreciate any helpful suggestions you can offer to help me bring my "happy colors" into my home. Thank you for all the great shows you do.

Dear Constance:
We have a small bathroom adjoining our master bedroom. At the time we purchased our new home, I had the bathroom painted the same color as the bedroom. However, (and this may have been a foolish idea), I chose a variagated-color granite that now causes me concern in decorating the bathroom. The light tan color of the walls does not work well with the granite which has hues of aqua, pinks, grays, black, burgundy all in what appears to be a rock formation. Since the granite is 8' long, it is a substantial amount to not take into consideration. I thought I would use the aqua color for window covering, towels, rugs, but what about the walls? The bedroom will be greens, browns, yellows, and some aqua.

Hi Constance. My question is about a small room (10'x 15") that we are making into an office. It has only one window (which is a bump-out with a window seat)and medium oak trim. I want a warm, manly color but don't want the room dark. Any suggestions??? Love your show. Thank---Vicki

Het Constance, Love the show. I am wanting to paint my bedroom and am not sure what color to use I would like some kind of purple because that is my husband and I's favorite color. I made a quilt last year that is embroidered deep purple roses and is set together in deep purple and lavender. Help me with a color. Thanks and keep the show going.

Hi Constance,
About two years ago, I painted my living room a really nice sage green. This year a replaced my sofa. I thought I was getting something that would go with sage however, it looks more like a moss green. I can't return the sofa and don't want to repaint until I know I have a color that will work. I used the coordinating color a bright yellow to paint the adjoining hallway. What do you think?
Thank you,

Hello Constance
I have a white laquered cabinets, natural wood floors and corian sandstone countertops. Very large eat in Kitchen. I cannot find any colors that work with the grey brown of the countertops except blah builder white/grey colors. I have tried taupes and greys, and they just blend in no matter what the contrast and really I want to stay neutral. I am so confused, the grey of the corian really is hard to work with.
Love your show!

Hi Constance,
I'm moving into a new home and will have my own craft room. I love black and white and will be doing the room that way but i'm having a hard time with the wall color. My accent color will be red. I'm not sure if i should go with a light gray or a tan. My style is more french country (my drapes will be a Damask)not cold and industrial. What are your thoughts.
Thank You

My home has old style textured walls. On the first floor is the entry, kitchen, living/dining, all one open area. Then a guest bathroom, and my master bedroom w/bath. My dilemma is my living/dining walls are painted a tanzanite green color,I have white furniture and accent with red. However, when my bedroom door is open all the green is visible, so what color do I paint my bedroom? Please don't say white. I love vibrant and off the wall colors. But this problem has got me stumped! Do I try and and paint a coordinating color to match the green, or do I just "go for it" and keep my bedroom door shut all the time? HELP!! I have been wrestling with this problem for three years. Thank you for your help!

Hello Constance...I am a huge fan of your decorating style on HGTV as well as previously on EMHE. I have lived in a rental duplex for 5 years and have never done any updating. I could pick from several rooms that need help but I think my very small bathroom needs it the most. I need to remain somewhat neutral and there is no way to accessorize. Any color suggestions to make it appear larger but not drab? Thanks for your time!

Help! My husband and I moved into a condo and I was determined that I would not have white walls again. I had ALL the walls painted Sherwin Williams "Viva Gold." I love the color but I want one or two accent walls. First question, Do you paint two accent walls in one large room (the living room and dining room are connected)? What color should the accent wall(s) be? Thanks for your help.

Hello Constance. I have a family room (approx. 25x30 feet). Two of the walls are brick (reddish, orange, brown one with a large fire place), one wall has 8 feet of windows facing west and there are 5 doorways. I would like a library type feeling for this room. There is no built in lighting and only electricial outlets on the walls. It is on a cement slab. What color would you suggest for the walls that need painting? I love your show!

HELLO!!! CONSTANCE RAMOS!!
I'm a BIG fan... I love all your color choices. My husband and I are a young couple... and well... our boudoir is not only dark, it's the opposite of romantic! I had the brilliant idea to choose dark brown (aka mocha) and cream. Then i added sky blue curtains!! Do you see where I was trying to go... YEAH!!.. It didn't work. I want soothing and calm... forget romantic... We want a color that makes us feel ahhhh.... relaxed!! Thanks for your time...

Hi Constance,
I am ready to paint my new condo- which is totally white. I have a yellow leather sofa (which I love) but what wall color will look best? I was thinking of a mossy green, but it can't be too dark, as the only source of natural light in the living room/dining area is a sliding glass door.
Help!
thanks, John

Hi Constance,
I have an open concept living area/kitchen. My couches are a plaid - dark green, tan, wine, beige. I want to paint the living space one color and set off the kitchen with a different color.
Can you help?

Hi Constance,
I am not sure, but to the best of my knowledge NO ONE ever deals with mobile home dilemas. We are retired in TX, we live in a 2200 sq ft, double wide and I am having a problem picking a color for the great room. We have a floor to ceiling light colored stone fireplace in one corner of the room, and cream colored quarry tile on the floor, that extends down the hall to three bedrooms and a bath. I have cream colored drapes on both sets of windows (one in front & one set to the back of the house). My kitchen, which is right off the great room, is pale yellow, with wood flooring. My master bedroom is called Basketweave, (a brown with slight pink undertones, I even painted the ceiling a lighter shade of brown). My laundry room, back entrance and guest bathroom are gray. Once again I painted the ceilings. I like color, but my husband prefers neutrals, I don't mind covering the molding with paint, and I love a painted ceiling. Another problem with this room is that it "peaks" in the center. I know there must be a way to make it look level, but I am not sure if I should because of the fireplace. I would really like to utilize my entire space and not just a corner of it where we watch TV. Can you please help me? If not I fully understand. Mobile homes are hard to work on We have done all of the work ourselves, every room in the house has been painted at least once, we replaced carpet with the tile, etc. The only thing we did not do is build the fireplace. Thank you in advance,
Barbara Damascus

Hello Constance,
I need major help. It seems like every color I choose for my home I end up repainting time and time again. I decided to paint my interior fiberglass door a brown color called nutmeg. However, the white trim around the door with the brown looks really bad. My walls are a very light beige and my ceilings are white. What color can I paint the trim without it looking so bold? The colors I have chosen are BORING and DULL.
I am always watching hgtv and I get these bright ideas but my projects end up costing me too much time and frustration. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Missy

Hi Constance,
I really hope you can help me. I am a 54 year old who raised 7 kids alone and now that they are all grown & on their own I am going for my dream of opening a coffee/pastry shop. I want to give it a french country feel and I love the colors yellow and blue but was wondering if you can give me an idea just what colors would go along with those and in what tones. Your help is much needed as I want this to be a place where people want to come and relax and feel like they're at home and I know the colors in a room can play a big part. Thank you for your help.

Hello, Constance,
I am an artist, often asked to help solve color dilemmas for many of my neighbors and colleagues -- quite an honor! But I am lost in space selecting colors for MY OWN HOME, specifically the EXTERIOR. I think paint is an inexpensive way to take bold color risks almost anywhere inside a home, but even painting the trim on our 3-story "Florida Cracker" is a daunting job you want to get right the first time! For reference, our wood-frame house is 20 years old and a few blocks from the Gulf of Mexico, so I feel dedicated to keeping the house traditional "Cracker white", light and beachy. We have a medium tan-brown shingled roof, and the trim and doors over a 20-yr. period has shifted from dark teal to sea green with accents in punchy spring green or tomato red. Teal is probably my very favorite color, (I think it goes with everything!) which makes any color option other than blue/green hard to imagine. I'd love to update these trim elements, and give my old color palettes a break. (I would love to combine 2 or 3 crazy Caribbean carnivale colors, but we also must consider resale appeal ... how boring is that??!) Keeping the bright white as the exterior's canvas, I'm thinking about colors such as greyed-down orange/red, or a cool lavender and sky blue combo. My "Libra moments" (VERY indecisive) desperately need a break and your sound advice! With double thanks,
Michele T.

Hi Constance! Love your show! I really need your help. My sofa is cranberry leather and I can not figure out what color will compliment it the best. I have tried yellow and the rood looked like a school bus (obviously the wrong shade to pick) I and thinking pale green or blue but not sure if this is the correct way to go. Please Help!!!

Hi Constance,
My family moved into our new home and everyone tells us how smart we were to go neutral and how much better it is for resale. Even your shows talk about how good it is to be neutral. My problem is I never have liked kaki and I just don't feel like this place is me. What else can I use and still be neutral enough for resale if we decide to move in a few years?

Hi Constance,
I have a very traditional house in Brooklyn, Ny. I watch your show and alot of shows on HGTV. I want to paint my interior living room and dining room and staircase. I find the colors used on your network are a little to bold for such traditional spaces such as these old style houses. Please let me know what you recommend to modernize these two rooms that flow into eachother, without losing the houses original style.

Hi Constance, I love your show! My house ia a traditional open floor plan. My great room,(19'ceiling)flow to kitchen/dinette & into sunroom. I painted the great room with a gold,(not dark enough)and same color in the sunroom. Now I don't know what color to use in kitchen. I know now I should have used a darker color in great room & lighter in kitchen, but now can I use darker in kitchen, I can paint the sunroom over if necessary, but don't want to go to expense of painting great room over since it goes upstairs into halls.Thank you for considering my questions, I will keep watching your shows.

Hey Constance!!
We have purchased a small home, and all of the walls are a (nice) off white, with white trim. We are trying to pick furniture (especially couch and sofa) with the correct colors for the existing walls. Also, the carpet is light tan. We looked at a nice seafoam green couch that we like, but don't know if that will go. Any other accent colors to add with it. Please HELP!!
Thanks, Ed. And Teri

A lot is going on in my study/craft room. I use this room as my getaway where I stitch/quilt/knit while watching T.V. The two bookcases and (electric) fireplace surround are painted off-white. Natural woods of other furniture are oak and pine. The couch is cardinal red, and the wing chair is mauve. The walls are light yellow. There are two rather large pictures, with one huge white-with-pink accents flower in each picture. I like everything individually. The big white flowers in those two large pictures have mauve-to-red colors in the centers, so those colors kind of tie together. The walls were painted yellow, when I was using it as my bedroom. This is the room with the T.V. hook up. I don't like to watch T.V. in bed, so the bed was moved to the smaller room and I changed the bigger room into my study. It's nice to have this private area for me and the cats, but "it's missing something and it's just wrong". Please help!

Constance,
HELP!!! I don't have a clue what went wrong. I work nights 6 months out of the year so my walls are painted brown it is called Mountain trail, its kind of a copper color. Well my sister found some curtains that match perfectly, with a vertical stripe and they have a soft gold color to them also. I was trying for a modern approach, what I'm having the most trouble with is an accent color, my thoughts were a medium blue (denim jeans) but a rustic red is for some reason crossing my thoughts. What is best to do or stick with the colors already in place and build on them? I would love any help.

I have a 1960s ranch. I would like to paint my bedroom a rich dark brown using a cream and apple green accent however the trim in my room is a honey color and I would really rather not paint it as all the trim in my house is uniform. What can I do?

Hello Constance, We have lived in our house for seven years now and the walls have been paint since the day the house was built. I have 24 foot ceilings on the first floor. The first floor is an open floor plan and the living and dining areas flow into the family room. I bought software that allows me to test different colors but I am still paralyzed with fear that the color I select for living/dining area may not have the same effect when it is carried onto the higher walls. My sparse furniture is white and the dining set is dark wood with white upholstered chairs. The rooms are so blahhh. I desperately need and want a change and would appreciate any guidance you can provide.

Hi Constance,
I have a tired bedroom. My color dilemma is that in the Fall/Winter seasons my duvet cover is a rich golden color and in the Spring/Summer seasons I switch it up to a serene aqua blue coverlet & shams. My dilemma is that I don't know what color to paint the walls which would make both colors palettes work. Love your show!

Hi Constance,
I live in a log home and am tired of all the wood and need some color. I love it here I just don't know how to go about incorporating color. I have knotty pine with log ceilings and all log walls. I will be removing the carpeting and want to replace it with some kind of tile floors. With the "HUGE" field stone fireplace in the center of the living, kitchen, and dining open areas I have no clue where to start with picking a tile color for the floors let alone picking other colors. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Constance.

Constance,
In my new house, the "master" bedroom is located upstairs in a room with dormered ceilings. They slope down to meet the wall (53" high). We have recently purchased beautiful contemporary bedroom furniture in natural cherry. There is new teal carpet in the bedroom. We would like to keep it. Can you suggest a wall color and accent/bedding colors?
Thanks!

I own a brick home built in the 1960's. I decorate very country using many beautiful antiques and country style furniture. We recently took down a wall that hid the living room from the rest of the house. Removing this wall, opened a large area that includes my kitchen, living room, dining and den. We have hardwood floors throughout the house. My den walls are painted cranberry w/white trim, the living room walls are gold, the kitchen and dining room areas are bead board stained. I do not know whether to change the living room walls and kitchen/dining walls to a taupe color - or to leave the walls as is. I plan to paint by kitchen cabinets (which are currently stained) an off-white base glazed with a tea-stained technique. What do you think?

Hi, Constance
I am totally & absolutely afraid of color on walls! Our family room is eggshell, kitchen buttercreme (very pale, soft yellow), living room light beige & so it goes throughout the bedrooms, hallway & bathrooms. I do try to use color as an accent - pillows, accessories. My drapes are even in neutral colors. I thought I heard on one of your shows that you are Greek - so am I!

Hi! I'm decorating an office for my real estate business. My husband bought a large oak desk and an oak book case with glass doors along with 2 large filing cabinets to match. I need to purchase a couple more desks, but can't afford more oak. What do you suggest as far as color? The walls are white and the floor is a dark laminate. I would like some ideas for wall color and am wondering if black desks would coordinate well with the oak.
Thanks!
