I just hung up after a 20-minute phone interview with Divine Design's Candice Olson, and I feel like I've been through a round of speed dating.

This was my first talk with the down-to-earth designer, but I hope not the last. My questions were general and, if taken out of context, could seem a little bit paparazzi-like. I felt guilty for asking her her birth date, but inquiring fans want to know! That and:
"What's your favorite scent?"
Armani Code
"Where were you born?"
Kenora, Ontario (map it)
I fired them off one-by-one, but Candice is a seasoned veteran of the interview and she reacted with as much quip and style as you'd expect her to. She's driven and well-spoken, but there's also a softer side that creeps in when she talks about her children — or the frazzled wife side when she talks about how her contractor husband spends all his time doing others' homes and not hers.
The interview and more will go into a full biography of Candice, to appear on HGTV.com soon. I have to save some of the juicier stuff for that, but in the meantime:
If you could ask Candice Olson one thing, what would it be? Post it in the comments! Thanks for your questions!

Do you have any plans on coming to Missouri? If not, what would it take to get you here? I have not seen any of your designs that I haven't liked. I would love for you to design any room of my house.

What room seems to be the most in need of design makeovers in the homes you've done?
Posted by Margie Johnson – March 4, 2008 3:21 PM
Here's what I'd love to know...
I need to preface by saying I just finished watching another makeover by CO. I have never seen a blah or okay room by CO, even though they are not all my style, I love everything she does. I am blown away by her talent. They really seem to match the people! Have any rooms ever been a flop?

Do you contract with individuals outside your television show for design consultations, and if so do you do this outside Canada and at what charge?

How often should a room be redecorated or is it simply a matter of taste? My husband and I disagree totally. He thinks you should do it once for life and I think it looks tired after about five years.

I am an aspiring designer and believe it stems from my art background (or along side it!) Do you have a background in art also - do you paint (pictures) sculpt?

I would love for you to decorate at least one room in my home, but would love even more if you could do my whole house. I love your designs. You are very inspiring.

Are you kidding? Just ONE question? Not possible! How come you don't come to Missouri? We're great people here! Windows - Where do you come up with great window ideas? Those chandeliers!! Holy cow! WHERE do you get such great chandeliers? I have yet to see one I don't like! How about someone that has antiques and/or antique furniture? Ever done a show where you re-use most of what a person has?? I refer to you as my husband's girlfriend! He loves your show, too! Love your staff, love your show!! If you ever do come to Kansas City, MO look me up!!!

I notice that all of your shows seem to be filmed in Canada. We really need you in California......also, love, love, the guys and how you all make it work with so much fun!!!!

Oh my God, will you actually read this? One question, “Will you please do any room in my house?” Could you just come to visit, we could talk and you could give me ideas. I would do exactly as you indicate. Oh my God, you are as close to perfection as they come.
Seriously, I live in Houston Texas and desperately need your help. Candice, realistically I am sure that there is 2.4 millions Candice Olson fans, perhaps you should consider creating a spin off show (in addition to your current show) where fans email you pictures or videos of their homes and you make recommendations. This would allow you to address more individuals in a shorter timeframe and we would benefit from your guidance.
Candice we all want your midas touch, that’s what happens when you are as close to perfect as they come. We love you, your designs and your show.
Godspeed to you

Every day I think to myself, what would Candice tell me to do about this, if I could ask her. I think it would be a great idea to have a show where people can ask questions. The sponsors would make a fortune, cause no one wants to miss a single show! You could pre-screen the questions that you wanted to answer, have pictures taken for reference, and then do a mock sketch of the results! It would be fantastic! Lots of times I only catch the last 5-10 minutes to see the before and after shots. That's the most impressive, not how they did it. Please consider a show like this!
Like everyone else, I love all your reveals. I love your style, and yours is the only show I will watch. I always refer to you as "Candice said" like everyone should know who you are!

There is only one real question for Candice Olson, which is "Won't you please make your magic in MY house?" :) Other than that, I would just want her to know that she is my design idol, and because of her I have taken some interior design classes and experimented on my own home and business! She can come - even just for a visit - anytime!!! :) I'm in Kansas City!

Hi Candice,
You are by far my favorite designer on HGTV, and are amazing at what you do.
When you select interior pieces...tub, furniture, lighting, I hear you say a lot of these items are custom pieces.
1. Do you have custom designers from building contacts throughout the year?
2. Do you select items purely from company showrooms and catalogs?
Keep up the incredible deisgns.
Sincerely, Cherene

Dear Candice,
First off, I love your show and everything that you touch!! My one question to you would be to ask you about this built-in in my family room! It is oak (not a fan of light wood) and everything else that we have done to our home is cherry. I feel as though if we stain it, it would be too dark in our home since our kitchen, eat in kitchen, and family room run together and is not a very big area. Would you tear it out (rumors from the neighbors is the original owner spent a lot on it) or would you paint it, and if so what color? Please help, no one seems to know!! Hopeless in Baltimore...THANKS :)

You are truly talented. I watch all your shows and love your designs. Will you come to Louisiana? I need a whole house makeover, inside and outside. You keep me dreaming!

My husband recently bought new dining room furniture.. Costs over $20,000 and I think it is too big for the room. He won't part with it and says I can make it work. Well I finally moved the furniture around enough that we can sit 8 without banging into the sideboard (really large) and smaller china storage piece.
I need help with the candelier? The dining room is very traditional, but although brass fixture with lamp shades, looks great...it is way to "heavy" for the room and the 8' ceilings. Also a hint on what drapes I could make would be fantastic. House is in Brampton, Ontario. Canada
But I winter in Florida, and last Sunday I had an HGTV, Candice Olson party. Everyone interested in refinishing their bathrooms was watching your program. We got a lot of ideas. If you are ever in the middle of the state, Lady Lake, near The Villages or Ocala (about 1 hour north of Orlando) please let me know. There would be lots of people interested in your skills in our gated community. Most of us redo our homes every 5 to 7 years.
My question is: Can you help me with my chandelier in Canada? Let me know if you come to Florida.....we will provide accommodations for you and your crew.....and I can arrange a personal welcome to many homeowners in the area looking for some fabulous ideas from the Mistress Herself, Candice. Never miss your programs. Txs, for sharing your talent with us.

I've never seen a show I didn't love!!! Obviously a lot of thought and energy is put in to all the designs. What is the average amount of time it takes to get inspiration and design a space? Have you ever thought of creating a design tip secrets book/magazine?
Thanks!

Dear Candice-
Just a quick note to let you know you have major fans in Nashville, Tn also. You are so gifted with your design visions. Your staff and you seem to flow so well also. Though I myself don't own a home,I have a best friend who does and would love for you to do her place, she definatly deserves it. So, if you ever decide to do homes here in the US; Nashville, Tn in particular, just holler @ me. Keep up the good work and God bless.Later... Toni

Would you consider expanding your horizons into the U.S. perhaps comercializing your famous chandeliers and call them "Chandeliers by Devine Design" at reasonable prices perhaps under $100.00? If I had the money I would send for you and your crew to Miami, FL and re do my frumpy bedroom. Thank you for a magnificent and elegant show.

Candice~ I love your designs and have a special family I think you should know about. My cousin Amy and her husband Todd live in Texas. They have had 4 children naturally and have 2 adopted daughters from outside the US and are in the process of adopting another child from overseas. They are busting at the seams in their house and are adding on another room for baby Kaden. They are also extending the kitchen out to make room for this growing family. They are truly an inspiration to see. My cousin is the type of girl to get things done on a budget. When someone says lets go shopping she gets the paper to check for garage sales. I would love for you to help her make the new babies room a beautiful place for them. They are SO deserving.

Would you consider coming to Arkansas?
We moved from California and bought a cottage style house. After four years we still don't know what colors to paint the living room/great room. The ceiling is very high and has some interesting angles to it, the fireplace stands out from one wall and is partically brick with a mantle, & there are french doors that lead onto the patio. The living room/great room opens into the dinning room and kitchen. We don't know how to bring it all together.
I know this is probably an impossible dream but at least I tried.

Also if you are for online design schools can you suggests some. Trust me I want get offended if you disagree I'll only respect your professional opinion.

WWCD What would Candice do? I ask this question atleast once a day at my home. I have watched you what seemed like forever and still I can't help myself in my own home. I need your recommendations and your skills. Love You- Can't get enough of your show. My
contractor was late coming by Saturday- I had to send him on his away until your show went off (the bad part about it- the show was a re-run- I've seen it at least twice). Is there a Candice University (I've read somewhere that you do not travel outside of Canada for designs)in Canada? Sign me up- I am sure that I would need a co-signer- oh-what the heck (maybe they can afford to go to)the more the merrier.
I just love your show- thanks for making life exciting.

I want to start out by saying you have great taste, your show is great to watch because your whole crew is insane!! I like when you do little skits.I can tell you all are having fun. All the shows I have seen you recreate have been awesome. Do you do any remodeling in the USA, if so would you come to my house in NJ and remodel my desparate master bedroom that use to be my parents room but since they have past on many years ago I want to redo that room for me. It hasn't been redone in about 42 years!! Thanks for the entertainment.

Candice, Your designs are phenomenal! What would you suggest as color options for a Carribean atmosphere (not beachy) in a basement. I want to use dark brown wood for furniture.
Thank you.

Candice,
I could only be so blessed to have you come to my home to give me a change over. You use some of the most WOW piece of furniture and I cannot begin to find that glass table you used in one of your shows, please tell me where do you buy your furniture from. Help! I need to know.

What would you do to make a tiny master bathroom unique and beautiful?
Posted by stephanie – March 5, 2008 5:52 PM
I love everything you done. You are the greatest. My biggest dream is to have you design a room or 2 for us. We just brought a family vacation beach condo in San Diego, California that was built in 1982 and still has all the original including the kitchen. My biggest problem is what kind of flooring to replace the old worn out flooring with. I would like some kind of wood looking floor but worry about the moisture and little wet feet from the grandkids. Any help with redoing my kitchen would be the best. Keep up the great work and if you are in California please email me. Thank you so much.

Candice, I love your show and your design ideas. Where do you get the inspiration? All of your designs are so different and seem to fit your clients perfectly. I would absolutely love the opportunity for you to redesign my kitchen and whole house for that matter. I wish you traveled to the east coast to do some shows! Keep up the great work. Your designs are great and your playful personality just adds that much more to your show!

Would love to see how you decorate your house. I bet it's as beautiful as those you design on TV. Would love to see you come to St. Louis and that I could afford to have you come to my house to one of your fabulous rooms. I watch my grandkids everyday and would love to have my basement done over so they would have a great place to play. Love your show and watch all the time. Hope you're on forever!

Candice, you are truly amazing. As a gal-pal
designer, I am astonished that your every design
is fabulous! I've been designing for years, but
would NOT want my own show, as I'm 5' and a little round! ... not tall and thin as you.
Keep up the great work and the great comedy.
I watch all of your shows time and time again!
...and God knows my house needs you...I never have time!

I try to never miss an episode of Candice's show. My husband and I are getting ready to remodel our Master Bathroom. The problem we are having is that both the Master Bathroom and Master Closet are the same size 8'L x 6'W very small. I would like to take space from the Master Closet to increase the size of the Master Bathroom. To make up for the loss in the closet we plan on adding floor to ceiling built ins. The built ins would be at a height of 10'. Do you think this is a good plan?

Dear Candice,
In my family room on the focal point wall, I have a wall to wall brick firplace with a hearth you can set on. I am lucky that the color of the brick is really quite a nice mixture of shades of cream, terracotta and brown, since so much of the brick used from the 1970's was so ghastly. I've always kept the decorating of the fireplace focused in the middle to try and detract from the whole wall of brick. But I was wondering if you have any suggestions, such as decorating tips, painting techniqes, demolition !!??, etc.
Thank you,
Karen Beckett Gauthier

Hi Candice. I love your designs, esp. the basements. I found my basement inspiration room on your episode 1201. How can I get the specifics on that room design? I want my basement just like that. I loved it.

Please come to Alabama. I have a Queene Anne style home that deserves better than myself. The home was built in 1883 and the dining and living room are in need of a makeover. I have seen many of your TV design episodes and I am alway amazed at the added touches you put in each room makeover. I love all the fabrics, lightning, and things you didn't even know you needed.

Candice..........I would like to know where to buy the recessed lights Chico installed in the fireplace seating in your Devine Design episode - 'Exotic Urban Living Room'. You've used them once before in a steam shower seat and that is what I would like to use them for.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I want to place King size beds in my guest rooms. How large should the bedroom be? What is the best proportion for a comfortable bedroom that will house a King size bed. Since these are not "master" bedrooms they will not be particulary large. Thanks for your help. Dee

You have exquisite taste. Your designs are beautiful and beautifully executed.
THE QUESTION: Does it make the house appear unbalanced or unfinished when one room is done to perfection and the rest are left in their original state?

Candice.....you are truly amazing.
What is your favorite room to design?
Do your clients set the budget or do you have a minimum you will work with?
What design style do you enjoy working with the most?
Have you ever designed a room that your clients liked but you really didn't care for the outcome?
