Chatting With Carter Oosterhouse

Today I chatted with (and he'll bust me for this) America's Favorite (Hunky) Handyman, Mr. Carter Oosterhouse. He's an incredibly down-to-earth and friendly guy, and was a good sport when I asked him what hair gel he uses (answer: anything that's in the bathroom). His new show on HGTV, called Carter Can, is debuting this Thursday, Oct. 4 at 8:30 e/p.

Carter Oosterhouse

His enthusiasm for the show — at 7 a.m. in the morning, no less — was apparent when he talked about encouraging homeowners to make the most of their home. The crew of Carter Can is not just doing a makeover for the cameras, he says; they're improving people's homes and lives. Another Trading Spaces alum, Vern Yip, hosts Deserving Design which is also focused on people more than the room's makeover. And isn't this the best kind of design?

The entire interview with Carter Oosterhouse (plus pictures of his abode) will be posted in time for the premiere. I'll post a link to it when it's live, but here's a sneak peek: he dishes on his design style, favorite tools and eco-friendly lifestyle. Because building is so aggressive against the environment, Carter does everything he can to minimize the impact on Mother Nature. Proof: check out his Top 10 Tips to a Greener Life.

Also happening this week: My friend Jennifer Sergent — and editor-in-chief of HGTV Ideas magazine — is going to be guest posting the latest furniture finds from the International Home Furnishings Market in High Point, N.C. As Fashion Week is to New York or Paris, so is furniture to High Point, N.C. And it looks like we're in for a real treat. Jennifer gave me a sneak peak today, and Hollywood Regency glam isn't just in for bathrooms! More on that tomorrow, along with eco-friendly furniture and adjustable furniture trends to follow later in the week.

I read Carter Oosterhouse's "Top 10 Tips to a Greener Life" - very cool! Though, on tip 6 he left out wool as another very cool sustainable flooring product. :) Wool is Dabbieri's favorite. ;)

Hello my name is Cayco Brooks. My husband an I are building a house, we are now putting paint colors on the walls. The problem comes in where I have picked a color from the color smart page (yellow tones neutral BEHR) I recieved from the store it was supposed to be a harvest brown well we placed it on the walls (FAMILY ROOM, KITCHEN) area and it looks more like a belgian Sweet. I feel it is a tad bit dark for what I have in mind for our new home how can I brighten up the space without breaking the bank.
I know I will not be repaint the space for a long time to come.
So please tell me what I can do to brighten up the space.

Hi! I have a tiny bathroom that needs new tile in the shower. The tile installations on HGTV shows (elaborate stone designs) seem to be out of place in my 50's cottage style house. There is currently shiny 4 1/4 x 4 1/4 shiny yellow tile with grey trim. Any practical suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Carter! I am remodeling my fireplace and I would like to know if I can run my hardwood floors up to the fireplace and then once I am ready to sell... can I just put a slab of stone over the hardwood so it is within city codes/compliance? I live in Manhattan Beach so if you live anywhere near me you can come over and check it out. haha

I would like to get a foot-pedal for my kitchen faucet. I can't find any reviews of the different brands. Can you give me any advice about the best ones for the money? I can't spend a ton on them but I believe they are between $100-$400.

Hello,
I really want to put hardwood floors in my house, but I have 3 Huskies and a German Shepherd/Blue Heeler mix. What kind of hardwood floor would stand up to their abuse? Also, what can I do about my grass in the back? What kind of grass can I put down that will live??!!!!!
