Bling It On at Share My Craft http://blogs.hgtv.com/hgtv/crafts/archives/2008/06/bling_it_on_at.html The HGTV viewers at Share My Craft certainly know how to bring on the bling! They've uploaded tons of great jewelry making projects.

Here are just a few of my favorites:

bird%20bliss.jpg
I love this sweet Bird Bliss Bracelet created by hopetreehouse. Made from vintage paper and a bird stamp covered in enamel, this pendant would look great on any type of chain, ribbon or a slim strand of beads. This technique would also work well for making personalized keyrings, belt buckles, drawer knobs, cufflinks or on a larger scale -- paperweights.

Mom%27s%20remade%20necklace2.jpg
A fantastic use of broken bits of inherited jewelry, this Mom's Remade Necklace created by MissGaylee is both stylish and sentimental. She refashioned one of her mother's orphaned earrings into this sparkly necklace.

opalized%20bracelet.jpg
This lovely Opalized Glass Bracelet created by Ritazart1 has a playful, exuberant zing and timeless vintage-style appeal.

cha%20cha%20ring.jpg
Fun and flirty, this Cha Cha Ring created by CathieFillian is a great way to use up mismatched beads in your stash.

plum%20necklace.jpg
Made of glass and cloisonee beads this Floral Plum Necklace created by Karolena is lovely in various shades of purple.

Crocheted in the Shade http://blogs.hgtv.com/hgtv/crafts/archives/2008/06/crocheted_in_th.html Guest Blogger: Nan Harless, Crafts Editor, DIY Network.com

I have been a crocheting fool for the past week or so! I don't know what got me started, but suddenly I just wanted to crochet instead of knit for a while, so I grabbed a hook and some cotton yarn and went to town. I'm putting together a gift basket for a friend whose birthday is next month, so I'm making her a set of assorted natural-fiber face cloths and a cotton-and-linen bath mitt. (Wish I could link to the patterns I'm using, but unfortunately they're copyrighted, so I can't do it. Just a hint, though: if you Google "sedge stitch washcloth," I bet you'll find one of them. Don't let on I told you.)

In checking out DIY's crochet projects, I found one that I thought was really neat: a crocheted seagrass hat.

seagrass%20hat.jpg

I love hats, but here in the South, even the most lightweight one can be way too hot in the summer. This one, however, looks like it would keep your head cool as a cucumber. I think I'll make one, turn it upside down and let it serve as the gift basket; then my friend can take all the swag out of it (I'm also including some handmade jasmine soap I found at a crafts show) and wear it when she goes out in the sun. And of course I'll have to make one for myself — the most fun part of crocheting or knitting stuff is wearing it yourself and basking in other people's reactions!

Pin It On! http://blogs.hgtv.com/hgtv/crafts/archives/2008/06/_this_gorgeous.html Handmade pins are a versatile way to update a ho-hum outfit. The HGTV viewers at Share My Craft have uploaded some great ideas for turning bits of silk, felt or mismatched buttons into fantastic, fun and flirty pins. Check 'em out!:

silk%20pendant.jpg
This gorgeous Singed Silk Pin created by CathieFillian has a high-end vintage feel, but can be made very inexpensively by using bits of fabric from old silk blouses. Add a vintage pearl button and you're ready to go.

collage%20pin.jpg
Vintage Button Collage Pin created by MissGaylee is a great way to use up vintage buttons or broken bits of inherited costume jewelry.

felt%20pin.jpg
This cute Felt Floral Pin created by ShooziesShoes is a fun addition to a tote bag, hat or jacket. To add a playful touch to your room's decor, make multiple felt flowers and either pin, glue or stitch them to toss pillows, the edge of a table cloth or a fabric lampshade.

100% Authentic Father's Day Card http://blogs.hgtv.com/hgtv/crafts/archives/2008/06/authentic_vinta.html Guest Blogger: Melissa Phillips of Lilybean Paperie

How fun to create cards just for the guys in your life. Creating masculine cards can sometimes be a bit of a challenge, so for this card, I decided to use a masculine color scheme and focus on a single very masculine element — a vintage Woodie station wagon. My dad took my brothers and me on countless road trips and I still have the most wonderful memories of those crazy times with all of us packed together in the camper. So, I tried to find an element that sparked a memory for me and I used that as my spring board. I chose to use a car die-cut and from there the road sign came into play. I love the color combination of brown, blue, green and orange — so away I went and created a little something for my favorite dad!

authentic%20beauty.JPG

To recreate Melissa's 100% Authentic Father's Day Card, follow the steps below:

Necessary Supplies:
teal card stock or similarly heavy-weight paper
cream patterned paper
brown solid paper
orange patterned paper
car die-cut (or design stamped or drawn onto card stock)
green flourish
2 green buttons in different sizes
1 chipboard piece
1 small ticket stub
1 100% authentic or similar text rub-on or sticker
natural hemp or twine
sewing machine (optional)

Steps:
1. Cut blue cardstock paper 7" x 5-1/4” and fold in half.

2. Cut a strip of cream patterned paper to fit down center of card. Attach a block of brown paper to this strip, along with a bit of orange at the bottom of the brown paper. Stitch down the sides if desired.

3. Wrap hemp around card vertically. Thread chipboard road sign and ticket onto hemp and tie in a bow near top.

authenticstep3.JPG

4. Attach car die-cut using dimensional adhesive just below center of card.

authenticstep4.JPG

5. Attach paper flourish just under edge of car and curving upwards toward right corner of card, and apply 100% authentic or similar text rub-on.

authenticstep5.JPG

6. Stack 2 green buttons and tie with hemp. Tie to hemp just below car die-cut.

DIY Knit Summer Sweater http://blogs.hgtv.com/hgtv/crafts/archives/2008/06/diy_knit_summer.html Guest Blogger: Nan Harless, Crafts Editor, DIY Network.com

Summer's still a few weeks off, but the weather already holds the promise of heat and humidity. Maybe this will be the summer that I actually stay cool, though: I've recently discovered the most incredible new yarn that lowers your body temperature by a whopping 5 degrees! If this stuff works as well as I've heard it does, I think whoever invented it has done a great service to women of uncertain age everywhere — I mean, I'm talking a Nobel Prize or something!

It's one of the fibers that's featured in our yarn quiz on DIY — take our quiz here to find out which one. Since I haven't had the chance yet to actually make something out of the aforementioned *wondrous* yarn to be able to recommend it, here's Sally Melville's favorite summer sweater, which features a openwork panel that helps keep the wearer cool on even the hottest day.

Cool Guy Father's Day Card http://blogs.hgtv.com/hgtv/crafts/archives/2008/05/cool_guy_father.html Guest Blogger: Melissa Phillips of Lilybean Paperie

I always find it a challenge to create a card for my husband. He just doesn’t seem to get as giddy about flowers, ribbon and glitter as I do — so for his Father’s Day card, I spared him those details and decided to focus on some of his hobbies. He loves to ride his motorcycle, loves to travel and loves a warm beach with palm trees swaying in the breeze. So I combined a few of these elements along with some masculine symbols such as stars and a road sign to create a card just for him.

coolguy.JPG

To recreate Melissa's Cool Guy Father's Day Card, follow the steps below:

Necessary Supplies:
grey cardstock
orange patterned paper
blue patterned paper
palm tree die-cut (or design stamped or drawn onto card stock)
road sign die-cut (or design stamped or drawn onto card stock)
flourish die-cut (or design stamped or drawn onto card stock)
star die-cuts (or design stamped or drawn onto card stock)
chipboard motorcycle
1 blue button
1 green button
2 sugar-coated brads
rub-on or sticker
hemp or twine
pinking shears
sandpaper
sewing machine (optional)

Steps:
1. Cut grey cardstock 8-1/2" x 4-3/4” and fold in half.

2. Cut orange patterned paper slightly smaller than card front, ink edges and adhere to center of card.

3. Cut blue paper slightly smaller than orange paper, trim edges using pinking shears, sand to distress and attach to center of card.

4. Cut a 1-1/4" strip of patterned paper to fit across card diagonally, ink edges and adhere just below center. Stitch around edges if desired.

5. Attach palm tree die-cut using dimensional adhesive. Tip: If you can't find a palm tree or any of the other die cuts, simply stamp or draw that element onto card stock and cut out.

6. Attach blue flourish and road sign to upper area of palm tree die-cut and apply rub-on.

coolguystep6.JPG

7. Wrap hemp around card twice, thread buttons through hemp and tie in a knot to secure. Thread hemp through chipboard motorcycle and tie to hemp to create a cluster of elements on right side of card.
coolguystep7.JPG

8. Attach brads through star die-cuts and adhere among the cluster of elements.

Beach-Inspired Crafts http://blogs.hgtv.com/hgtv/crafts/archives/2008/05/summer_is_fast.html Summer is fast approaching, which always puts me in the mood for a beach trip. Ah...the sun, the sand, the surf — I LOVE the beach. Apparently, so do a lot of the crafters who've posted their projects to Share My Craft. Try a few of these projects yourself to get in a proper beachy spirit.

seaglass%20bracelet2.jpg
I love this Sea Glass Bracelet created by DeezieSunshine. She lives by the coast and finds these beautiful pieces of sea-polished glass on beach walks — lucky girl! She did a great job designing this playful bracelet, the beach glass and glass beads really capture the colors of the ocean.

jingle%20shell%20candle.jpg
DeezieSunshine also created this glowing Jingle Shell Votive. I've often found these jingle shells (also known as capiz shells) while beachcombing and wondered what I could do with them. Now that I see how beautifully they diffuse light, I'm picturing them covering pendant lamps or hardback lampshades.

sea%20glass%20lights.jpg
These Sea Glass Luminaries created by MosaicMichelle would be a great project for using up sea glass or shells you've gathered on vacations. No worries if you can't gather together enough true sea glass for this project; the storebought tumbled-glass type works just fine.

Technology Gets Cozy-ed http://blogs.hgtv.com/hgtv/crafts/archives/2008/05/technology_gets.html Guest Blogger: Nan Harless, Crafts Editor, DIY Network.com

I've recently started making lots of tiny little projects like digital camera cozies and cell-phone covers. They're fun and easy to make and make great little last-minute gifts. Knitty Gritty has some terrific little projects for you to try. And if you're like me, you'll soon be making your own variations on the theme I've provided.

mouse%20cozy.jpg
I have a laptop at home but my office computer has a mouse, so why not make a mouse-shaped mouse cozy?

ipod%20cozy.jpg
I may be the only person alive who doesn't own an iPod, but I can feel the time coming very soon when I will bite the bullet and buy one of my own. Of course it will need its own little carrying case to keep my tunes hot.

monitor%20cozy.jpg
There's something so appealing about knitting with fake fur yarns, but sometimes you just get tired of making scarves (and face it, sometimes your friends run the other way when they see you coming toward them with a gift that just screams "hand-knit scarf!"). In a case like that, maybe this monitor cozy is just what the doctor ordered!

headband%20cozy.jpg
For the gal on the go, here's the coolest accessory yet: a hair band and iPod holder in one!

garter%20cozy.jpg
And finally, this project reminds me of those sultry gun molls in old gangster movies. But you don't have to pack heat with this nifty little garter: it holds your money, a lipstick, house key…those tiny necessities you always need to keep handy.

I hope some of these tiny trinkets will get you started designing your own projects. Half the fun of knitting smaller items is experimenting, so have at it and let me know what you come up with.

Needful Things http://blogs.hgtv.com/hgtv/crafts/archives/2008/05/needful_things.html Ah, the little niceties that make life a bit easier — we all enjoy them. These clever crafters have created tutorials to show us step by step how to create a few of the things that are simply handy to have around.

Check out these tutorials to learn how to make your own needful things:

lipbalm_closeup.jpg
Like many women, I am a certified lip balm addict — meaning I always have at least one of my many, many lip balms close at hand. In fact, just thinking about lip balm makes me want to put some on. So, needless to say, I was very excited at the thought of making my own lip balm — no more frantic trips to Target when my stockpile runs low. NotMartha.com has an excellent and really thorough tutorial for making your own tinted (or not, your choice) lip balm to give as gifts or stash away for your own dry lip emergency.

reversible%20tote%20bag.jpg
Truly, who couldn't use a tote bag? Especially one as cute and utilitarian as this one — it's even reversible! So, if one side gets a bit soiled, simply flip out the clean side, load it up (4 handy dandy pockets in this tote — genius!) and go.

pincushion%20ring.jpg
This Pincushion Ring demonstrates the old adage that necessity is the mother of invention. No more fumbling around while sewing to find straight pins, they're always right at your fingertip.

heat%20therapy%20bag.jpg

And finally, Sew Mama Sew posted this excellent tutorial for creating your own Hot and Cold Packs. Filled with rice or buckwheat and your choice of essential oils, these stylish pads can be heated in the microwave or chilled in the freezer to provide relief of minor aches and pains.

Have you found any great crafty tutorials in your web-adventures? I'd love to hear about them!

Crochet Flowers http://blogs.hgtv.com/hgtv/crafts/archives/2008/05/crochet_flowers.html Guest Blogger: Nan Harless, Crafts Editor, DIY Network.com

For my Pick of the Week, in honor of warm days and spring and summer flowers, here's a few flowers our crocheting buddies can whip up: a Crochet Flower Ring, Purse and Choker that make terrific quick gifts — and, unlike the real McCoy, will never fade or lose their petals!

flower%20ring.jpg flower%20bag.jpg flower%20choker.jpg

Wish there were a knit version for each of these projects, if anyone out there has instructions to share, feel free to send them to me and (if they're not copyrighted) I'll add a link to them. I hope you enjoy making and wearing them!
