]]>I have been a crocheting fool for the past week or so! I don't know what got me started, but suddenly I just wanted to crochet instead of knit for a while, so I grabbed a hook and some cotton yarn and went to town. I'm putting together a gift basket for a friend whose birthday is next month, so I'm making her a set of assorted natural-fiber face cloths and a cotton-and-linen bath mitt. (Wish I could link to the patterns I'm using, but unfortunately they're copyrighted, so I can't do it. Just a hint, though: if you Google "sedge stitch washcloth," I bet you'll find one of them. Don't let on I told you.)
In checking out DIY's crochet projects, I found one that I thought was really neat: a crocheted seagrass hat.

I love hats, but here in the South, even the most lightweight one can be way too hot in the summer. This one, however, looks like it would keep your head cool as a cucumber. I think I'll make one, turn it upside down and let it serve as the gift basket; then my friend can take all the swag out of it (I'm also including some handmade jasmine soap I found at a crafts show) and wear it when she goes out in the sun. And of course I'll have to make one for myself the most fun part of crocheting or knitting stuff is wearing it yourself and basking in other people's reactions!

]]>How fun to create cards just for the guys in your life. Creating masculine cards can sometimes be a bit of a challenge, so for this card, I decided to use a masculine color scheme and focus on a single very masculine element — a vintage Woodie station wagon. My dad took my brothers and me on countless road trips and I still have the most wonderful memories of those crazy times with all of us packed together in the camper. So, I tried to find an element that sparked a memory for me and I used that as my spring board. I chose to use a car die-cut and from there the road sign came into play. I love the color combination of brown, blue, green and orange — so away I went and created a little something for my favorite dad!
Necessary Supplies:
teal card stock or similarly heavy-weight paper
cream patterned paper
brown solid paper
orange patterned paper
car die-cut (or design stamped or drawn onto card stock)
green flourish
2 green buttons in different sizes
1 chipboard piece
1 small ticket stub
1 100% authentic or similar text rub-on or sticker
natural hemp or twine
sewing machine (optional)
Steps:
1. Cut blue cardstock paper 7" x 5-1/4” and fold in half.
2. Cut a strip of cream patterned paper to fit down center of card. Attach a block of brown paper to this strip, along with a bit of orange at the bottom of the brown paper. Stitch down the sides if desired.
3. Wrap hemp around card vertically. Thread chipboard road sign and ticket onto hemp and tie in a bow near top.
4. Attach car die-cut using dimensional adhesive just below center of card.
5. Attach paper flourish just under edge of car and curving upwards toward right corner of card, and apply 100% authentic or similar text rub-on.
6. Stack 2 green buttons and tie with hemp. Tie to hemp just below car die-cut.

Summer's still a few weeks off, but the weather already holds the promise of heat and humidity. Maybe this will be the summer that I actually stay cool, though: I've recently discovered the most incredible new yarn that lowers your body temperature by a whopping 5 degrees! If this stuff works as well as I've heard it does, I think whoever invented it has done a great service to women of uncertain age everywhere — I mean, I'm talking a Nobel Prize or something!
It's one of the fibers that's featured in our yarn quiz on DIY — take our quiz here to find out which one. Since I haven't had the chance yet to actually make something out of the aforementioned *wondrous* yarn to be able to recommend it, here's Sally Melville's favorite summer sweater, which features a openwork panel that helps keep the wearer cool on even the hottest day.

I always find it a challenge to create a card for my husband. He just doesn’t seem to get as giddy about flowers, ribbon and glitter as I do — so for his Father’s Day card, I spared him those details and decided to focus on some of his hobbies. He loves to ride his motorcycle, loves to travel and loves a warm beach with palm trees swaying in the breeze. So I combined a few of these elements along with some masculine symbols such as stars and a road sign to create a card just for him.
Necessary Supplies:
grey cardstock
orange patterned paper
blue patterned paper
palm tree die-cut (or design stamped or drawn onto card stock)
road sign die-cut (or design stamped or drawn onto card stock)
flourish die-cut (or design stamped or drawn onto card stock)
star die-cuts (or design stamped or drawn onto card stock)
chipboard motorcycle
1 blue button
1 green button
2 sugar-coated brads
rub-on or sticker
hemp or twine
pinking shears
sandpaper
sewing machine (optional)
Steps:
1. Cut grey cardstock 8-1/2" x 4-3/4” and fold in half.
2. Cut orange patterned paper slightly smaller than card front, ink edges and adhere to center of card.
3. Cut blue paper slightly smaller than orange paper, trim edges using pinking shears, sand to distress and attach to center of card.
4. Cut a 1-1/4" strip of patterned paper to fit across card diagonally, ink edges and adhere just below center. Stitch around edges if desired.
5. Attach palm tree die-cut using dimensional adhesive. Tip: If you can't find a palm tree or any of the other die cuts, simply stamp or draw that element onto card stock and cut out.
6. Attach blue flourish and road sign to upper area of palm tree die-cut and apply rub-on.

There are currently no DIY or HGTV craft shows scheduled for the weekends, but who knows, our Programming Departments tweak the schedules all the time. If one of your favorite shows suddenly isn't on -- don't panic -- chances are it has simply been moved to another time slot. Check the HGTV Program Guide or DIY Program Guide to find its new time. The Program Guides are also handy if you live in Mountain or Central time zones, allowing you to see a week of programming at a glance and select which time zone you'd like the results to display.
Well, happy crafting everyone! There are a few schedule changes on the horizon for this fall, I'll let you guys know when those changes take effect.

]]>I've recently started making lots of tiny little projects like digital camera cozies and cell-phone covers. They're fun and easy to make and make great little last-minute gifts. Knitty Gritty has some terrific little projects for you to try. And if you're like me, you'll soon be making your own variations on the theme I've provided.
I hope some of these tiny trinkets will get you started designing your own projects. Half the fun of knitting smaller items is experimenting, so have at it and let me know what you come up with.

For my Pick of the Week, in honor of warm days and spring and summer flowers, here's a few flowers our crocheting buddies can whip up: a Crochet Flower Ring, Purse and Choker that make terrific quick gifts and, unlike the real McCoy, will never fade or lose their petals!

Wish there were a knit version for each of these projects, if anyone out there has instructions to share, feel free to send them to me and (if they're not copyrighted) I'll add a link to them. I hope you enjoy making and wearing them!
