Knitting for Beginners

Posted by camille – September 17, 2008 5:32 PM

Are you new to knitting? I must confess that although I love the look of handknit sweaters and scarves, it's a craft that I've yet to experiment with. One day, though, preferably a chilly, inside-kind-of-day, I totally plan to pop in a good movie, curl up and learn how to knit and purl.

If you're a knitting newbie like me,
I've pulled together some instructive videos to get you started:

Getting Started With Knitting: This video offers descriptions of the basic tools needed and helpful tips on needle sizes, types of yarn and deciphering yarn labels.

Indispensable Gauge Primer: To ensure that you have chosen the correct sized needle for the job, making a guage swatch is an essential first step.

Casting On for Beginners: In this video, Vicki demonstrates step-by-step how to "cast on" or start your knitting project.

Basic Knit Stitch Method: Both the English or Throw and Continental techniques are demonstrated and their differences explained.

Knitting 101: Knitty Gritty host Vicki Howell and her guest, Vickie Square, share tips for conquering common begginer knitting problems.

Make Your Own Knitting Needles and Make Your Own Fun Needle Point Protectors: Vicki demonstrates how simple and fun it is to make your own customized needles and playful point protectors. A great gift idea for yourself or the knitter who has everything.

Binding Off Fundamentals: Also known as casting off, this video demonstrates the binding off technique for finishing your knitting project.

For an explanation of many of the terms used in knitting as well as a list of knitting abbreviations, check out the printable Handy-Dandy Knitty Gritty Glossary on DIY Network.

I'm a big fan of Knitty Gritty,Vickie & her guests.
Any chance of posting the patterns for the articles of clothing worn on the show?? Vickie wears some really great shrugs/sweaters etc, as do some of the guests.
Many Thanks and of course - knit on!

So far, I like this site. As Knitty Gritty is shown locally on HGTV at 7:30 a.m., I appreciate a place where I can go to see what's going on with the show. I've knitted and crocheted for over 40 years and some of the new yarns are baffling, yet exciting, to me. I sure hope this site will give me insight.

I enjoy watching the Knitty Gritty on HGTV locally. As a mother of 3 active boys, I need smaller projects that can work up in about 2 hours. Any suggestions?

I watched a knitty gritty show on knitting on the round. In the background was a baby blanket with a bear in the middle. Is there somewhere I can get that pattern?

I really enjoyed Knitty Gritty. It was sent to the 5:00am slot in my viewing area and is now gone. What happened? Please reconsider its demise and air it at a later time.

Your new Knitty Gritty helped me quit watching HGTV.....what happened to Carol Duval....borning!

I really like knitty gritty but I love Carol Duvall....what happened to her show and when is she coming back to a time slot in the twin cities?

I am very upset with Hgtv! They took off all the crafting shows and put them on DIY. Not everyone can get that channel. I can't.So now there is really no reason to even watch this channel anymore. I was a long time watcher and this channel would be on all day even if it was for background interest. Now I'm not even sure I watch for an hour.

I truly love Carol.I miss her show.i watched it all the time.no,sense in watching that channel any more.Sorry she is not on anymore.

Please - Knitty Gritty originally on HGTV in my
area 7 AM Mon, Wed, Fri - Bel Air, MD (Near Baltimore). Up until Friday of last week life was fine. Monday when no Knitty Gritty aired, figured it was the Labor Day Holiday. But what would the reason be when none on Wednesday?

Where have you moved the show? I miss it greatly and if at work - will video it to watch in the evenings.

Help!

There is a new show out on some PBS channels called Knit & Crochet Today with soap star Kassie DePaiva. Hoping that HGTV may be interested.

Thank you..Patsy

I am not sure who to complain to but I would like to see more craft shows. There are so few, especially ones like the Carol Duvall show. I hope that you will get this note to the right people. Thank You. Audrey

Maybe it's just me, but I can't get any of those videos to show. I get the audio but the video isn't showing nor are the controls (to, say, lower the volume...)

And I want to add my voice to the complaint that the craft shows all seem to have disappeared off HGTV.

PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE put that show Knit & crochet today back on. That was how I was learning how to crochet. Then I was gonna learn how to knit. I just started to watch it and now it's gone.I hope I am asking the right people? I only got to the single stitch and I made a 2 color scarf (Red&gray). I went to a gathering of older women at a library in Hasbrouck Heights NJ for knitting & crocheting and a company sent them free yarns, that's how I started my scarf. I have no money to buy yarn so this helped me out a lot. I got 3 skeins of yarn red gray and blue. It's a start, I crochet a scarf and pull it apart and try another new stitch like the double crochet, triple crochet I hope they are right, I have no one that knows how to let me know if they are right. Anyway please get the show back on. Thanks Debbi
