Have A Crafty Super Bowl Sunday

Posted by camille – January 29, 2008 5:16 PM

This year's Super Bowl is Sunday, February 3. Fans of DIY's Knitty Gritty may remember last year's Super Knit Sunday which took place during the Super Bowl. Sadly, I've just heard that we will not be repeating it again this year, but that shouldn't keep the knitters in the group from staging their own "knit-in".

The purpose of last year's knit in was two-fold: to help knitsters plan a fun football-free evening with like-minded friends while supporting a very worth charity, Warm Up America. Warm Up America is dedicated to the creation of handmade shawls and blankets to help those in need. As a crafter, you can help by knitting or crocheting small squares that will eventually be sewn together into afghans to be distributed to women’s shelters, nursing homes, and daycare centers.

To help you get started, Warm Up America has posted complete instructions for crocheting or knitting the 7" by 9" squares which they will later use to create the blankets. The folks at DIY Network recommend that you first create a 7" by 9" cardboard template, it's easier to handle than a measuring tape and great to use as a guide to keep your square on size.

So leave the football fans to watch the "big game," pick up your needles and a bit of yarn, gather friends together, whip up some snacks with a little help from our friends at Food Network or Recipezaar, and knit a square for a worthy cause!

I like football. So I take my needles and yarn with me. I usually make scarfs. My friends love it.

Charity starts at home, that is what Bible says, don't you think our fine gonvernment has sent enough out of this country? I am a U.S. CITIZEN and gave my fair share to this country and when I needed them, they turned their back on me. Why, should you even need to ask, they are two busy giving what we have worked for, paid in, and fought for, to people sneaking and coming into our country that don't deserve it and run when we need them. Illegals getting our tax dollars to set them up, 20 living in one trailer with nothing said or done. I could go on and on, but one thing is for sure....Don't you people think you have given enough away from our country. We are becoming the minority now. I will not donate or give you or anyone supporting these third world countries who are not going to change because they simply do not want to. Your the who needs help, you need to take another look at what your doing here.

I love DIY, but you really need to tape some NEW shows. We can only watch so many re-runs.

Thanks

I'm so disappointed with DIY. It seems crafting has been put on the back burner. I understand the home renovation craze but not at the expense of crafters. There are home buying, home selling, home makeovers, bob villa shows on all the time, but if I want to see knitty gritty I have to wake up at 5 am. Nowno crafty super sunday what gives DIY?

Why is Knitty Gritty at 5:00 a.m now??? ( I live in Michigan). I love that show, will it ever show in the late afternoon again? Is there any Chance we could see repeat performances of the Martha Stewart Crafting later in the afternoon, Why is it Knitty Gritty and the Martha Stewart craft Shows, are not on Saturdays? Sorry, lots of questions.

I am sorry that there will not be an all-day Knitty-Gritty this year. Since I work during the day during the week and DIY no longer offers Knitty Gritty during the days on Saturday and Sunday, I was hoping for at least ONE day during the year that I could view Knitty Gritty on TV. It'd be nice if you brought that program back on the weekend for those of us who are working during the week and cannot view it then.

Dear Camille,

This is a wonderful idea!!!! I am always looking for a reason to knit or crochet. A party gift or the like created by me.

While my husband and son watch the game, I am just as content crafting.

This is also a perfect time to remember those who need our help. We can keep the spirit of giving going, not just during the holidays, but all year long.

Happy crafting!

Hey Camille-I tried to email customer service, but it wouldn't go through. Please pass these questions on if you don't know. Thanks-Why is DIY Network suddenly gone to almost all guy things? I only watch it now for an hour for Carol Duvall and Martha Stewart. Martha is a lot of recently already shown things so many days now I don't watch DIY at all. Hgtv is the same way. It's pretty obvious that they are targeting a young audience, so they've pretty much lost me except 7-8 and sometimes 8-830 in the morning. I hate to see them throw out everything. Aren't the young people out working? Why not show things during the day for us baby boomers and young people shows during the evening? Also, what's with all this stupid real estate stuff? Incase no one has noticed the bottom has fallen out of the home market. Thanks--Cindy

This was such a great idea that I'm holding my own "Super Bowl Party". We're all watching the game, but all of us girls are making squares. I happen to knit and crochet, so all the girls had to do was bring themselves ... I provided the yarn and utensils.

Well, back to the game. GO PATS!!!

Great idea. WHAT DO WE DO WITH THE FINISHED SQUARES? WHO DO WE SEND THEM TO?

When was the last time that a new Knitty Gritty was taped? Haven't seen a new episode in so long. It seems like I have to go to yarn websites to get new ideas for what to knit (or crochet). I miss the real CRAFTING premise that this channel started out with. Perhaps you could develope a Home Remodel channel and return DIY to crafting idead that we might teach to our children and grandchildren.

Dear Camille, I am not sure who you are, but I hope you have some pull with the diy network. I really miss the craft shows. I love to craft and knit and have been with diy from the beginning. I love the new ideas on Martha Stewart crafts. I'm not to excited about the funky and mood crafts. It seems that diy comes up with a new show, Like Martha Stewart Crafts and after about 10 new shows, they start the reruns!! I know there are tons of crafts out there, we need new stuff!! Thanks for your help, Mary Jane

My daughter from Ga. was saying it's just not good any more, DIY. What happened to our fun shows. Knitty Griddy, Uncommon threads, Jewerly show. No crafting? Gee, I miss the crafting.

I am also very upset that I cannot see Knitty Gritty in the afternoon anymore. Who can I get in touch with to lodge a request? Does anyone have an e-mail address that I can use to contact the powers that be?

I too miss the craft shows on DIY. I want to know why they were taken off and they used to be on Saturday afternoon if I missed them during the week. I like decorating too but so many of them are on all the time.

I live in Tucson, Az. I set my alarm for 2:00am and get up to see Jewelry Making, Knitty Gritty, Scrapbooking, and Simply Quilts. I then go back to bed until 5:00am and get up to see three more shows (Simply Quilts, Carol Duval and one surprise show. Then, at 10:00am, Martha Stewart comes on, Creative juice, B. Original and Craft Lab, if I'm lucky. That's it for craft shows. I too used to have the luxury of watching craft shows in the morning and crafting, doing housework and running errands in the afternoon. Now I feel miserable if I miss the shows, and yet, if I watch the shows, I feel miserable due to lack of sleep. I'm in my 60's and my health isn't good. And, I have to pay EXTRA for the channels to watch these shows, most of which now are re-runs.

I too am very disappointed with the channels putting us crafters on the back burner. The craft stores are making a good living on us, however.

Please add my name to the list to "Make A Difference in The Life Of A Crafter"

Love to Craft,

Marnee

I know you can't please everyone with the shows on DIY and the time slots they're shown in, there's always going to be someone to complain. Hasn't anyone got a VCR or DVR or Tivo? I set up my old VCR and tape the crafting programs I like (Knitty Gritty, Simply Quilts, etc.) and watch them at my leisure. An added plus is that I can also pause the tape if the phone or doorbell rings or other interruptions occur and I don't miss one minute of the show. Come on people, this is 2008 there's always options available.

I too have been wondering what has happened with the show format on DIY crafts. HGTV and DIY have always been a favorate of mine until recently. I spend little time now watching either. Some shows are getting to silly. Too many real estate shows. I believe your target audience is probably 30-60+ years. I think we like ideas that are inovative that we can apply to our everyday lives, with budget in mine.

Hello,
I was wondering why there is so much about Home Makeover on DIY.."I didn't realize that was a Craft." I'm interested in doing crafts that I can sit down and do, pickup and take to show my friends as they show me theirs. I have been buying Craft Books as DIY is losing my interest. Most of my friends feel as I do and want to know if the DIY will be doing away with the craft section of the show. We are mostly mid-60's to 78 yrs old. Thank you..Fran

What has happened to Simply Quilts? I can't figure out when it comes on HGTV. At one time HGTV stopped broadcasting it and you had to watch it online which totally stinks, especially if you and then it was coming on DIY and now I can't find it on TV on either of those channels. Or am I going to have to get up at 4 a.m. to see it?

I'm sick of all these renovations shows. Every time I turned on to HGTV or DIY it's always home renovations and lawn renovations. I'm sick of all that stuff. I want to see more crafts at a decent hour when I can watch them. Preferably on Saturday and Sunday since I work full time during the week.

DIY and HGTV have both really gone downhill in the past couple of years.
