Hi Camille, I found this site and your article by accident and will come back often! What is your opinion of Craft businesses? For 25 years I was a floral designer earning a living. The business changed so much, I became employed in customer service for a company. But the "pollen never leaves your veins!"
A couple months ago, I got a booth at a craft mall, where I was at 5 years ago. It's really slow going. Do you have any advise in this area of selling crafts?
Thanks! Michele
Posted by Michele – December 12, 2006 4:58 PM
Hi Michele, honestly my opinion of the craft industry is that there are more opportunities than ever before. The internet provides literally a worldwide selection of materials, often at very reasonable prices. The internet is also a wonderful marketing tool for advertising your business and generating sales locally or nationally. I'm assuming that your current craft business is floral design. Have you contacted caterers or wedding and event planners in your area? Building a strong relationship with a few of these companies should more than keep you busy! Also, check out Etsy.com, it's an online craft mall of sorts, their prices to list and sell items are very reasonable. Best of luck!

I would like to ask a question.
A few years back, HGTV did a Christmas Special on a family that got into felting by "mistake" when a woolen sweater or coat was washed in hot water. Can you give me the information on that show so I can access it?
Thank you,
Mary

Hi Camille, I'm looking for suggestions on how to decorate plain white towels with different materials. I wish to get an early start on making gifts for Christmas, 2007. I think I remember seeing towels decorated with different trims and maybe even some fabric. Help would really be appreciated. I also would love to know more about putting a picture on a tile. Thank you. Marcia

Dear Camille,
Do you have any pull in the programming of HGTV and DIY TV? This Jennifer Perkins is disgusting. I am a true blue fan of Carol Duvall. I understand she (Carol) wants to retire, and I can understand that feeling. But, can't the PR people come up with someone a little more mature, and a little less trendy to do craft shows?
Thanks for listening, Alice

I would love to see shows spotlighting the talents of the many artists out there who have written the books and magazine articles that we artists are already consulting and buying. These published authors and designers of new techniques and supplies are obviously in demand- we are buying their products and books! They are motivating and inspiring, and inspiration is what keeps us watching HGTV.

I just got an older dresser and the problem I have is how to fix the drawer pull holes. There are 2 vertical holes that are approx. 3 inches apart on each side of every drawer. I want to remove old holes and center a drawer pull hole on each side for a horizonal drawer pull on each drawer. The wood is tiger oak that the dresser is made of. Any ideas?
Thank you

Dear Camille, I am very excited to view your show. I have been volunteered to do a few beading projects for children between the ages of 9-13 through our local Michgian State Extension Office. My own bead stash is quite hefty so I think I have enough for up to 10 children. Do you have any ideas of projects or places I can go to look for ideas?
Posted by Kim Frisch – January 8, 2007 11:43 AM
I saw a great idea for wedding favors! I was hoping that I could do it myself to save some money and get my kids involved at the same time. That's why I need your help. The favor is a square card (so far I can handle it) with a shape attached (looks like a cookie cutter cut out) that has wildflower seeds in what looks like the recycled paper project that my kids did at school. The guests then take the shape off the card and plant it to get wildflowers. I would love a "recipe" if you know of one or maybe you could point me in the right direction if you don't. I realize that I'm a wee bit early for the spring planting ideas, but I need to get started.

Hi Camille. This is my first time on your web site. I make candles and I was wondering if you could tell me how do you attach glitter, beads, etc. to candles? I have an idea, but thought I should ask. I make lots of gift baskets and wanted to try something different with the candles, as far as decorating them.
Posted by Kathy Norris – January 11, 2007 9:36 AM
Hi Kathy,
I've personally used several different mediums for attaching sequins or small beads to pillar candles. My favorite is spray glue, like Super 77. To cover the whole candle, simply take your candle outside and spray it thoroughly with glue. Then roll your candle in seed beads, coffee beans, sand, glitter, etc. To attach sequins or single beads you can use really any glue that will dry clear and lists beads or sequins as one of the materials that it will hold, such as school glue or super glue. Thanks for checking in, Kathy!

oboy I wish I had found you before this-I watch Carol Devaul and I miss her-I hope HGTV keeps putting crafts on their programs-I have been a crafter since I can remember-I do it all-knitting,crocheting,sewing,crafting of all things-ornaments,painting etc.

I have just "found" your site through HGTV newsletter. It is great. I don't do a lot of crafts, but I do like to make my own greeting cards; tatting decorations, edgings, with beads, earrings (all tatted). I like the Carol Duvall show, they've just added it in our area (I watched all the time when we lived in California)
It is really interesting how creative one can become. I've bookmarked your blog, so will return and see what everyone is doing.

Is there any way to remove the printed lettering on glass bottles? I found this really great glass and I'd like to re-use it; but without the labeling. This is not a paper label; it's printed right on the glass itself. Can you help?

Hi Camille,
I have tons of old loose photos, I want to do something unique with them, other than putting them in an album. Many years ago I saw a program that showed how to put photos on a board, or table then use shellac over the top. I dont remember how it was done. can you help, or do have any other ideas how I can use the photos?

Hi Camille,
I have a product that may be useful in your crafting dept. It's a barrier hand cream I invented called CA RELEASE. It keeps super glue and most other glues & paints from sticking to your skin as you work. It's been promoted in several hobby magazine with good comments from users and we would like to share it with HGTV viewers. More information is available on our website. www.wideopenwest.com/~mmc9892
I would be happy to demonstrate this product for you if you would like me to.

Isn't there anyone at HGTV that listens to the viewers? Everyone is screaming on the HGTV message boards about HGTV taking the craft shows off and putting all the decorating/real estate shows on. HGTV needs to realize that there are MANY people who are happy with their homes just the way they are and have no interest in the topics HGTV seems to favor. Seems like real estate people are running your network now. So sorry to hear that but at least now I can cancel my cable subscription and save money since the craft shows on HGTV were the only things I watched on cable.

Hi Camille! I have recently become involved in decorative painting (mostly on wood). I took a painting class a few years ago and became addicted! I have a question that I am hoping you can help me with... I am participating in a large yard sale this summer and would like to sell some of my crafts. Most are originals by me, however, if I used a pattern from my class, that is not copyrighted, is it appropriate to sell at the yard sale? Thanks, Beth

Hi Camille,
I'm glad to have someone to talk to about the shows that are no longer on today. I'm especially disappointed that Sandi Genovese has been taken off the HGTV lineup. I was really hoping that HGTV would also run the other series from DIY. DIY is only on digital cable in my area and that is not in the budget. I have been a long-time viewer of Carol Duvall and was so pleased to see that her reruns are continuing. (Would her first shows be viewing any time soon?) I'm not so much a fan of "That's Clever" because that show presents the artists as silly.
Thanks for your "listening."

(In response to Beth's question about selling crafts made with copyright free patterns)
Hi Beth,
my understanding is that as long as you aren't copying anyone else's work and the pattern that you use is copyright-free, then it is totally acceptable to sell your craft for profit.
Thanks for checking in!

Just found your website. Enjoyed all the questions from viewers. I, too, am a fan of Carol Duvall but can't find her online. Also, I am trying to find hanging butterlies like the ones that Pottery Barn used to sell. My daughter is expecting a girl in June and we want to make or buy some butterflies for her room. Can you help me find some information on how to make them? Have not found anything on the internet.

HGTV seems to have forgotten that a lot of their morning viewers are retired. You have taken away shows that are of interest such as Carol Duvall, Simply Quilts, Sandy Genovese Scrapbooking and have gone to stupid silly craft shows and a lot more home decorating shows that are not in our league. Your retired viewers have a lot more time for TV watching than the young people.
Posted by Dee – March 27, 2007 1:51 PM
Over a month ago was the best daytime programming HGTV has ever provided. Now, in my area, the only good program on is Creative Juice and Simply Quilts. They are great. However, I do not get DIY in my area, and being an avid crafter, I enjoyed my whole morning watching Knitty Gritty, Uncommon Threads, B Original, of course, Carol Duvall reruns. Now you have Room by Room reruns that look like they're decorating in the 80's, and Homes Across America. I can tell you that women that are home during the day would rather see craft shows, then homes they could care less about being shown. I don't look forward to watching HGTV anymore. I did forget, there is one more show I really enjoy, and that is That's Clever. Please put the craft shows back on HGTV, for those of us who do not have cable access to DIY. Thank you for listening Camille.

I agree with many of the viewers; your programing is "bad". We need the craft shows back. If you have any influence on this please use it and bring the craft shows back. I'm like many of your viewers, I can not afford cable for DIY. I watched it at a friend's house and many of the programs on crafts are appropriate for HGTV. Who changed the lineup of shows? Is this lineup set in concrete? How can we help to get the craft shows on again? Who do we need to contact?
Posted by Sonia Alvarez – March 28, 2007 9:50 AM
Hi Camille, I am so glad to have found your site! I also have noticed a change in your AM lineup. Being a very crafty person, I miss the craft shows. Homes Across America is not an everyday show for me! I do have a few questions for you Camille that are not related to "TV viewing", can I contact you directly via email? Hope to hear from you soon. Catherine

Hi, I had contacted HGTV (and received no reply) instead of Camille because I did not know who to tell, but I also agree that HGTV has done an injustice to all retired and/or handicapped and home-bound viewers. The only craft shows left are from 7 to 8 am, and the remainder of the entire day is spent on home design in one form or another. As a home-bound viewer, I enjoyed watching craft shows because I could order supplies, have them delivered and learn to craft without the burden of leaving my house. I do not think showing another hour or two of craft shows would do any financial damage to HGTV, and at the very least, it would get rid of some of the duplicate "Room by Room" and "Painted House" shows!!!
Posted by Gail – March 30, 2007 3:08 PM
Something needs to be done about the craft lineup. I would love to see more projects that are done with polymer clay, making the smaller dolls, the crafts with pens & distressed ink projects. The show Creative Juice is absolutely the worst. I am sorry that Sandy G is not around and would also love Carol Duvall to be back. The lineup has gotten really bad. More quilting shows would be nice and knitting shows. I am not retired, however, in the past I would record craft shows in the morning before leaving for work so that I could sit down at night & relax & watch the recorded shows and like everyone says, there is nothing to record worth watching anymore. Really sad.

Hi Camille--I want to thank you for changing the programming on HGTV to the point that I no longer have to be concerned about what is on HGTV--there's simply nothing that I want to watch! Almost all of your craft/creative arts shows have been switched over to DIY--a station that I do not want to pay extra for since my cable bill is already out of site...too bad about your programming--you had such interesting shows in the past--Carol Duvall, B Original, Creative Juice--all on DIY now. Perhaps HGTV has spread themselves too thin or maybe funding is limited--I'm not sure what the problem is, but I know that I've lost a channel that was truly interesting and enlightening in the past to one that has home buying shows and constant repeats of home remodeling shows. Goodbye HGTV!

I am one of the ex viewers that had to pay for viewing of both HGTV and DIY networks. After reading some of other viewers comments, I am glad to know that I was not the only one thinking that this was just crap now. I feel that these are the most stupid shows now. If I wanted to see first grade crafting, I would visit the local grade school. I can't even decide which is the most useless and childish. I did decide to drop these from my satilite package, and glad that I did

I have to agree with the people who are dissatisfied with the new HGTV. I really don't know who's idea it was to discontinue The Carol Duvall Show, but it has been sorely missed by more than a few. Even if Carol herself wanted to retire (although she still seems quite busy) I wish someone would have been found to step in. While creative lab is okay it's not in the same league as Carol. And Creative Juice some of it give me a break - so childish with alcohol. And Be Creative is fairly neat but most of those projects are large scale. I also find it amusing actually more annoying than anything that HGTV isn't making any comments on the topic. Hey I have an ideal how about a show TOP CRAFTER. You know a show that starts out with several crafters and by process of elimination discover your new host. Or how about like PBS use an expert one day each week. Such as Donna Kato, Mary O'Neill, Dee Gruenig, Lisa Pavelka, Sandi Genovese, the list could go on and on.

I can't get the DYI network(it isn't offered) I really miss the crafting shows. I am really tired of seeing shows that hgtv had on eight years ago when I started watching hgtv(Classic Drives and Exordinary Homes, or the great gardens that most people will never have). I want to learn something for my home and my garden, not something that a bontanical gardens would have. I get bored watching reruns. Give us something new besides trying to sell your home or flip that house.

Hi Camille-so nice to have someone to ask this question of on the HGTV site: I once saw a Crafters coast to coast or that's cleaver show where a lady made a soap mold from the top of a cupcake with icing on it-I am trying to find out what material she used to apply to the top of the cupcake to make the mold. I thought it was silicone caulk but that does not work. I have looked thru all the episodes I find on this site and searched "soap" as well but do not seem to find the episode I am looking for. Can you help? Do you know what to use to make a mold of the cupcake top that hardens and you can then use as a mold to make soap? I hope you can help! Thanks!

Hi Michelle, I also am disappointed with the crafts shows lineup since Carol's retirement. Could HGTV /DYI host who wants to be the next Carol Duvall instead of the next designer? The beauty of the Carol Duvall Show and what is so sorely missing, is the what the latest in crafting industry news and techniquies. I also missed the many guest who would share their knowledge with us. Please watch the other crafts shows and maybe you'll see what I mean when I say , we need a new " Carol Duvall Show ". Thanks

Hi Camille:
I agree with "the masses" - what is up with all the real estate-type shows? I would think that the majority of your viewers are older and are already established in their home of choice. Please bring back crafting shows. Carol Duvall's show was the best because she showed a variety of crafts. A show that would air new ideas and projects would be nice. Thank you.

I couldn't wait till I got HGTV on our cable a few years back and watched all the time. Recorded shows while at work. Now I hardly ever turn you on. I hate all the "real estate" shows also. I loved Carol, Simply Quilts, the gardening shows and crafts. I watch Knitty Gritty, Creative Juice and Uncommon Threads while getting ready for work, but even they are reruns. I don't know who watches your shows now, but it certainly is not the person who enjoys crafts, both doing them and watching other people doing their craft. That's Clever is a good show, (reruns now), but why have the crafters acting like idiots. A former fan.

I love all the HGT shows and figured someone could give me some advice. I have a duvet to cover an old but cozy comforter. The problem is that the comforter doesn't stay properly fitted in the duvet cover. What I get is a bundle of comforter "wadded" up in one section of the duvet coverand the rest of the duvet appears empty. Can I do something about this problem?

Hi Camille,
I am so glad to see Simply Quilts and Carol Duvall back on the lineup, even if they are reruns. What a shame the powers-that-be decided to stop production. I can tell you with honesty and that it was not a conscious effort on my part, but when SQ and CD were taken off of the air my interest slowly dwindled in HGTV to where I don't watch it any longer. I enjoyed some of the home decorating shows, etc. but please, how many of these need to be there!?! There are enough hours in a day for both. We need good quality craft shows (some of these new ones are really flops!) and SQ and CD were among the finest. Keep the reruns going and bring us something fresh and mature like they were. And think about running SQ in episode order, and/or offering DVDs of season shows like Fons & Porter, E. Burns, etc do. Just my opinion, for what it's worth.

More craft shows, please! I miss watching HGTV. I planned my mornings to watch the few that you did have. You are missing a huge audience of crafters. In a way it's good, I guess, because I would spend the whole morning watching your network rather than getting my own art work done.

HELP CAMILE!! My boyfreinds mother works sooo hard. She has been raising three boys on her own ever since her husband walked out on her 13 years ago. She has a small apartment in Staten Island that has potential, but I'm not good with the decorating thing! I'm really good at sewing and crafts and such and I really want to help her out, but she doesn't really have a lot of money, and I don't have any ideas. Would you be able to give me some ideas for a pretty, yet cheap living room getaway for her and her three sons??
Posted by Renata – September 8, 2007 3:13 PM
Hi Renata,
You write that you can sew, how about making some slipcovers for her existing furniture? Denim or chenille are great upholstery fabric choices for high-traffic rooms. You also write that you are great at crafts, how about painting her existing lamps and any wooden furniture, like side or coffee tables. Beyond these changes, nothing transforms a room like a fresh coat of paint on the wall. These three changes together would dramatically change her room and cost very little.
Happy Crafting!

Hi Camille
How can I buy your tv show so I can use them for our business. We are considering using craft show on Arabic TV chanel and for closed circle education for our clients.
We do business in the middle east and in Jordan specifically.
What is needed to buy (for reusage) videos from your show.

Hi Camille,
I have some great craft ideas I'd like to
share. Is there an email address to send my
ideas too?

Hi Camille,
I know you enjoy your job, I also work in the crafting industry, and I love to work everyday. I do ceramics and I also teach ceramics. I have had some of my work published in "Fired & Crafts". My project was on the cover last month. I would love to see more fired art on diy and hgtv. There is a lot to fired arts, ceramics, jewlry, clay puzzling, and glass just to name a few. I also am trying my hand at decorative painting. I am in a local chapter of the SDP. I have thirty something photos on diy's show and tell. I am paintingpal2 if you would like to view them. I also have two technique blogs.
Thanks for searching out all the great techniques for us. Keep up the good work.

Hello Camille ! I have to agree with the previously posts about the real estate programs. I have just about stopped watching HGTV, There was a time ( for several years) when I could not be torn away from HGTV~ the good old days of Carol Duvall, Kitty Bartholomy and sewing programs. I never see Joan Steffand anymore either. I am so sick of the real estate programs. A few real estate programs are OK. But now it seems that is the main purpose of HGTV. The Design Star series is great, but that is once a year. Thanks for listening.

I saw a tin can figure very briefly on a Carol Duvall show the week of November 5-9, 2007. I can't find it on the Carol Duvall show projects. It wasen't mentioned on any segment. Please tell me how to find it on the internet.
Thanks DJ Hall 896467

Hi Camille
Apparently everyone misses Carol Duvall just as much as I do. Please DO NOT dis-continue her program. I have never done anything like that but I would be willing to host the program just to keep it going in the style it has been. You can teach me and I will do fine.

Are there any plans for more scrapbooking shows? It seems as though every time you look there is a show on about housing renovations. I feel that I've paid my money to be able to get DIY, and HGTV for nothing. I really thought more craft shows would be available!

Hi Camille,
I love all craft show on DIY and HGTV. They are inspired me and alot of my craft project I got idea from watching the show on DIY and HGTV especially Knitty Gritty and Jewelry Making. However lately these shows are moved to very early time ( I live in Seattle )so I do not watch much anymore and I'm so tried to watch all home repair show I'm thinking to stop watching 2 this chanels. Do you think they will bring these show back on daytime and will they have a new more show in this year?
Posted by Benjawan – February 1, 2008 10:22 PM
Hi Camille,
We need to get the crafting shows back on at a time for real people, not bright and early bird morning. Crafting is so much a part of our lives; besides I am teaching my grandaughters. Please, no more DECORATING shows. Thank you.

What a slap in the face to all Knitty Gritty lovers---- to have you put this "fun time" thing on Super Bowl Sunday for knitters. You have just looked over what Knitty Gritty has done in the past and used it as a wonderful idea.
The wonderful idea would be to have a new Super Knit Sunday.
I have never seen your show. Perhaps they show it at a great time - like 2:00 am for 4:00 am like some of the Knitty Gritty shows are on.

I agree with most of the comments on HGTV programming. I know Carol Duval has retired but can't someone at HGTV or DIY come up with another show that would bring back some of the regular guest artist/crafters that she had on her show. Some of my favorites were Karen Thomas, Mary O'Neal, Donna Kato, etc. Also would like to see new Scrapbooking shows with Sandi G. I talked to her last year and she said she didn't know if she would be filming any new shows. I hope HGTV or DIY will bring us more of her great ideas with new shows not just reruns.
Thanks

I have 2 original charcoal 13 x 14 pictures, octagonal in shape with both media still life (fruit, grapes, wine). I'd love to frame them for hanging & had an idea of double matting them & framing in 16 x 20 frames to showcase both. How do you think this sounds or do you have other neat suggestions for me. Also, they have not been sprayed to protect them (I don't even know if they can/should be) & they do smug if you touch them. How, or do I protect them & should they be framed under glass? Thanks for all your help & keep up the neat & interesting craft ideas!! Shirley

Hi Shirley,
Your charcoal drawings sound great! Double matting is always a nice touch and yes, I would protect smudgy charcoal drawings under glass. No need to spray (or fix, as it's called) the charcoal if you plan to frame them. Fixing charcoal drawings is necessary when they will be handled a lot or stored without framing. When you take these to be framed (or if you mat and frame them yourself) be sure to use acid-free mats. Acid-free or archival mats will keep the drawing's paper from discoloring and deteriorating over time. These sound like very nice drawings, I'm sure you'll enjoy them for many years to come.
Thanks for your question and kind words!

Please, please include more craft shows in both HGTV and DIY lineups! I seldom watch either network now. I don't have any interest in power tools or watching programs about houses I can't and wouldn't want to redo or own. Take a look at some of the craft magazines such as any of the Somerset Studio publications, or "Cloth, Paper,Scissors", etc. Ideas galore! Many of the guests on the Carol Duvall show would also be terrific sources for new programming.
Thanks,
Linda

I HATE mondays!! Your mondays are horrible!! What has happened to all the craft shows??? I cannot always get DIY as it cost a lot more to get it. I was addicted to HGTV in the mornings and all the craft shows. I have to see how to make a craft than I can reading it! Please put the craft shows back on as I am all done with HGTV during the day and don't watch it at all anymore. NO craft shows no HGTV. That is how I look at it. I am sick of DIY in the morning and I suppose if men were home in the morning they may like what is on but us girls hate it all!!! We love Carol and all the other crafters so please bring them back now!!
Thank You and I hope you are understand all of us gals and a lot of men too.

I really don't think it matters to HGTV that so many of us would like to see the programming return to the good old days. You know, the ones with crafting, sewing and making something from nothing. I've now noticed that they've reduced Carol Duval to two times each week. Once in a while I turn to HGTV only to turn it right back off. So tired of redecorating or exploring the homes that I would never even be able to afford one month's mortgage. Anyone interested in developing a network devoted to all things crafty? Donna

I agree about the craft shows. I do crafts with the children at my church on Sunday mornings. There was always something on Carol Duval that I could use for the kids. I enjoy some of the decorating shows but, there are only so many of these shows a person can watch in a day. More varity is needed. DIY is not offerred in our area. I always liked watching the craft shows in the morning and the decorating shows in the afternoon on my days off. Hope to see more crafting shows in the future.

Good morning Camille! Thank you so much for featuring some of the Etsy artisans. There are some wonderful artists and crafters on Etsy, and I would encourage anyone who is looking for exposure for their work to take a peek and see all of the wonderful items for sale. It is also a great place for creative inspiration!
I know Mother's Day is just around the corner, but if anyone wants to learn how to make a darling vintage teacup pincushion, I have a couple of free tutorials posted on my blog at http://mamaslittletreasures.typepad.com/mamaslittletreasures/
if anyone is interested.
Another area that has become quite popular recently is the eBook pattern business. If you haven't checked out www.youcanmakethis.com, that might be a place for you to share with your readers. So many great ideas for crafters, seamstresses, and artists!

I like quite a few others and sadden that all hgtv and diy, have on of craft shows is reruns..I do like the other shows but with homes going into forecloser and prices going up on gas and food, crafts and making things ourselves is even more important than before..You have over-loaded the two sites with decorating and real estate shows but there is nothing for us crafters..what is wrong with a beading show? a glass art show, polymer clay shows, etc. loved Carol and Crafters show but you haven't found a replacement for her and didn't continue with crafters around the world either..Martha Stewart is not a real crafter and really an insult to people who are...so please lets get some crafts shows back on!!!

Hi Camille,
I would love know how to tie beautiful ribbons, wrap beautiful boxes, make distinctive personal cards, etc... do we still have any kind of show like that on TV? Please tell me where and when I can see those things.
Thanks,
Judy
